Favorite Trail:Naseby trails
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $500.00
Strengths:Put together with Industry 9 hubs and spokes they are reasonably light weight and advertised as a strong xc/ trail rim.
Weaknesses:Soft rims. Add the DT Swiss tubeless kit & the numbers dont stack up.
Similar Products Used:Mavic Crossmax SL's for 4 years
Bike Setup:Turner 5 Spot DW link
Bottom Line:I weigh 174 lbs (79 kg's)plus riding gear and have baggy UST tyres with DT rim strips & fluid. Riding a trail I enjoy twice a year last weekend and returned with three big dings in the rims. Heading into summer here in Kiwi land & the trail was a little wet but didnt expect the rims to be made of butter. I should have bought the 2010 Mavic ST's. I really hate writing a negetive review but the bottom line is I dont recommend either the service from Industry 9 or the 4.2d rims.

Strengths:Light, in combination with DT Swiss 240s and DT swiss competition spokes good wheels, but... read about weanesses.
Weaknesses:After one year of riding I did a routine inspection of the rear wheel and found several dents in the wheel. I am about 90 kgs and I am a relatively careful (not that aggressive) rider. I usually have both wheels on the ground and no drops more than 1 foot describes my riding.

It is really disappointing to find out that I have to replace the rim after just one year of riding. These rims are definitely weaker than the el-cheapo rims I got on my first mountainbike.

It is difficult to compare experiences with other riders, but in my case the problem occured after 4000kms of riding. Perhaps, production quality of the rims is not constant so that some people have good rims some bad ones.

Similar Products Used:Mavic EX 721 (good), Rigida X-star 19 (weak)
Bike Setup:XT brakes, shifters, derailleurs.
Fox F32 100RLC, Fox float rp23, DT Swiss hubs, spokes, and rims. (Rims will become mavic xc717 disc).
Bottom Line:Do not buy these rims.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $350.00
Purchased At:Universal Cycles
Strengths:Good wheels, I have about 100 miles on them so far and they are holding very true. Running Hope Pro Disc 2's with Hope skewers, and the Stan's no tube kit! Maxxis Larsen TT's 2.0's.
Weaknesses:Well I have not found any yet, but if they end up not staying true I will replace them with Stan's Arch.
Similar Products Used:DT Suiss 430, Mavic 717 (they suck), Sun Rhino Lite's
Bike Setup:Gary Fisher Ziggurat 19", full XT and XTR set up, Reba Race 100mm, Avid Juicy Carbon 160's, Thompson stem & seatpost, Monkeylite carbon bars, Chris King headset, ODI grips. (23.5lbs total)
Bottom Line:Very good for the money, I got them on sale and used their discount coupon so it really could not be beat for the price. I hope they hold up, I am 6' tall 200 lbs. and can be very hard on wheels! I put about 80 miles a week on my bike so I will know pretty quickly if they hold up or not.

Strengths:Low weight, wide for an XC rim.
Weaknesses:Soft aluminum.
Similar Products Used:Shimano XTR wheelset, Mavic Crossland Wheelset, Edge Composites XC rim.
Bike Setup:I9 AM wheelset. Titus Racer-X.
Bottom Line:Combined with the I9 build, this rim made for a nice, light, stiff wheel. Tires set up pretty wide on this rim which is a bonus. The DT tubeless kit (purchased seperately) worked well, but really no better than 1 layer of strapping tape and 2 layers of electrical tape...which was much cheaper.

The only knock I have on this rim is that it is SOFT. On one hand they dinged easily if a rock managed to compress the tire far enough to strike the rim. On the other hand they were soft enough to not cause a pinch flat through the tubless tire (nice in a race situation). The dings bend out easily enough with a pliers. I'm a 160 lb XC racer, none of the dings occured on anything resembling a jump...but most did occur plowing through rock gardens at speed.

Strengths:Light and you can still run 2.1 tires no problem.
Weaknesses:Strength with bigger riders.
Similar Products Used:5.1's, 6.1's, 4.1's
Bike Setup:SC Superlight XC machine: DTSwiss Wheels, FOX, Avid, SRAM, Kenda, etc.
Bottom Line:The rims are light for sure. I'm running a 32h in the back with 240 hub and SRAM with a custom build...have about 100 miles and no issues. Front rim 'was' a 28h with 240 and is now destroyed after about 100 miles (after a wreck). Since I'm over the 90kg weight limit by about 5kg's w/gear I was hoping the rim would hold, but one pretty good wreck and the rim is toast. So in general if you're a light weight guy and don't ride too hard or on any super tech or rocky trails you should be just fine...next time I just have to remember not to ride the Superlight like the Nomad :)

They are super light, super responsive and provide a level of reliability and security second to none..YOu WILL NOT BE DISAPOINTED with these rims ...

Strengths:Light and nimble, I have them on the Hope Wheels with the Pro III Disc hubs
Weaknesses:None yet

Bike Setup:for XC and AM, MC Fury frame. build RS Tora, Fox shock, SRAM X7, Easton Carbon stem and handlebar, Easton EA70 stem, Shimano XTR cranks, better suspention to come (someday)
Bottom Line:These rims are good, I have not had a problem with these, probably because I used them as advertised, and the rims are correctly laced. Mind you, i'm 6ft3 and weight ~264 Lbs....
No dents, no damage, and still straight, after more than 1 year of use.

Bottom Line:these are my lightweigth wheelset and they are great if you realize their limitations. I have mavic 321s with 2.5 tires for riding the park. The dts I use with 2.1's when i am peddaling and they are great. If you want an all mtn rim by the 5.1. this rim was not intended for drops and dh trails. I'm 165lbs and not super aggro

Strengths:Light and strong.
Weaknesses:None.
Similar Products Used:All Mavic = Junk
Bike Setup:Which one?
Bottom Line:I have 3 pairs of the XR 4.2Ds, can't seem to understand the negative reviews here. I recommend this rim above all anything out there. It's very light and strong. I'm 175lbs. and not an overly agressive rider (no drops or anything crazy). I'm a big DT Swiss fan, I have a pair of X450s also.

There's a reason why the 717s are $25 less than the DTs, because Mavic can never live up to the quality of DT.

Negative reviewers be sure to post your weight and abuse as these rims are not for abusive riding or clydesdales. Fast XC riding and racing, there is nothing better.

Strengths:Really straight, build very true.
Light.
Cool looking
Eyeletted.
Weaknesses:Sorta expensive.
Similar Products Used:Mavic
Bike Setup:'06 Cannondale F3 Caffeine - X7/XTR mix
Bottom Line:Great XC rims. These built up really easily, and EXTREMELY straight. Haven't had to touch up true them at all since I built them.

Some of the reviews posted here display that people know nothing about wheelbuilding. And, 4 foot drops? This is a 400g rim, for heaven's sake.

I thrash mine rather severely, lots of rock gardens, log jumps, roots, etc. and haven't dinged a rim yet. I am ~170 lbs and 6'4", and tend not to hurt wheels, either. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Strengths:Well, nothing that I can notice. I have only just started to notice smaller things, so I dont really have anything to compare it to.
Weaknesses:Very very weak!! O am only a High School Junior, at 5 foot 10 inches at about 165 lbs I am really not a heavy person!! I have however, done some freeriding and a few downhill trails with these rims. As far as I am concered it seems that after one year of use, rims are not supposed to dent in 8 different places. I dont think that my riding style is the problem, its the rims!!!
Similar Products Used:Some Mavic rim that came on my older 2004 mountain bike.
Bike Setup:2008 Cannondale Prophet 2
Bottom Line:Not very good rims at all!! I have ridden on many different trails throughout the state in addition to the trails that my friends and I have built in our neighborhood. None of these trails would I consider as rough or hard on my bike. Possibly a gravel road? I wouldnt consider a piece of gravel hitting my rim being a problem or a piece of debris hitting my bike!!

Bottom Line:I ride very rocky trails, weigh 190lbs. and have not had a problem. Haven't even had to retrue wheels yet. Paired with a 120mm Fox fork there is plenty of stiffness to navigate almost any trail. Great build from BWW, who I highly recommend. I wouldn't recommend for riders over 200lbs.

Strengths:lightweight, I set it up wih a nice xtr hub
Weaknesses:soft, went off a little drop about 4 feet and dinged the rim badly. I just got the wheel rebuilt. Because of its light weight, I chose the rim again.
Similar Products Used:mavic rims,

Bottom Line:Great light rims. Ideal rims for racers who ride smoother singletrack. If you ride a place with lots of boulders and neccacary drops, you may want to think of another rim.

Bottom Line:i left the front rim untruable riding to school. sure i took a pretty hard crash, but I expect this rim to work in the street as well as it does on the mountain. i am scared of riding the back rim, due to the fact that it is one of these.

Bike Setup:Stumpjumper.
Bottom Line:I am running these rims on Hope hubs. It is a killer wheelset and very well built from CRC. I have been on many aggressive XC single track rides and fast summer ski runs and access roads which are verging on DH runs. I have not had a problem yet. I mostly run 45psi with suspension running pretty plush. Great rims. Recommended. Maybe first poster did not have the wheels built properly?

Bike Setup:06 S-works stumpy, Talas RLC, XTR, Hope Monos,SRAM X.0
Bottom Line:My goal was to build a wheel with a wider rim & light, yet durable enough for a 190lb rider w/ gear. The 4.2d is on a dt 340 rear w/ the thru-bolt option laced 3x with DT Comp spokes and brass nipples, hand built at Evolution Bikeshop. I'm pleased with the overall performance in terms of stiffness, weight, (924gms w/out thru-bolt)enabling flatter tire width (using 2.35 Kenda Blue Groove)and durability withstanding regular drops of 2-3+ feet. Objective acheived.

Bottom Line:This is an addendum to my previous review above. The folks at DT Swiss customer service are 100% class. I am glad to see that there are organizations that actually care about their customers. There is not way for me to prove that these failed on easy riding or from a 4ft drop (for those that have seen me ride, this would be a no brainer)and they are still making good. Thumbs up to DT Swiss customer service. For bigger guys, I would still recommend a heavier rim (especially in the rear) or run these at 45PSI min. I am giving a 4 rating to average a 2.5.
My instinct tells me that lighter riders will love these!

Bottom Line:I'm 6' tall and 200lbs. These hoops have beem ridden less than ten times. Just had a baby so the rides have been less frequent and less intense. These rides were light XC with intermediate single track at best and the rear rim is already bent. These rims are clearly not strong enough for everyday riding.
I'm a big fan of DT Swiss hubs and spokes, but I don't think the 4.2D's are being advertised accurately.
