Product Description

All-mountain riding demands more from the riders -- more skill, guts, and determination. The toll on equipment is no less taxing. That's why DT Swiss makes the EX 500 Rim. It's sturdy enough to handle the rigors of 45 minute white knuckle descents, yet at 500 grams it won't bog you down on the 3 hour climb that gets you there. The EX 500 rim is identical to the most recent version of the DT's 5.1d rim. However, it must be noted that the 5.1d was a bit soft in its first iteration. Subsequently, DT Swiss engineers tweaked the aluminum alloy to make it more ding-resistant and ultimately, more durable. The EX 500 is simply the latest and greatest version of the existing wheel with a fresh set of decals. It uses stainless steel eyelets to help distribute the tensional stress from the spokes. This makes the whole wheel more durable over the long term -- a great benefit for your custom handbuilts. It also has a sleeved and welded rim joint. DT machines the surface so it's easy to build into a perfectly true wheel. The DT Swiss EX 500 Rim comes in black and is drilled for 32 spokes. It has a 540mm ERD (effective Rim Diameter). The 27.8mm width allows the use of substantial tires up to 2.5" for awesome traction on sketchy trail surfaces. Claimed weight is 500 grams.

Strengths:    No strengths.

Weaknesses:    Fragile.

Bottom Line:
This rim is not good for XC no for allmountain biking. I think it is a big DT Swiss mistake. First rim that was broken during my 9 years XC experience.
