installing a sigma 506 have some questions

ok, i have it setup on my bike, but currently the sensor and mag are 1cm apart ... so i need to space it somehow ... what should i use for doing that? just some cork or rubber? ... it is about midway on the rim, i can move it down closer to the hub .. but my LBS said dont get it to close to the ...
