Strengths: Good looksWeaknesses: Cones AxlesBottom Line: The Shimano Deore LX hubs are ok if you do not push them too hard. they can handle average street rides commuting etc. I've had cone and axle trouble, several broken spokes. A fair amount of trouble with the freehub ratcheing. They just are not too durrable. I do not know how much of the broken spoke out of true problem can be chocked up to the Shimano LX rear hub and how much to the Weinmann BCX-1 rims,
but it has none the less been a problem. if these are stock on your bike like on mine, look through this web site and think about what kind of weel reviewed hubs would make a good upgrade for your appilcation (I'm going to buy DT Swiss Hugi 240's). If you are Looking to new hubs or wheelsets do please look elsewhere, you'll be much happier in the long run.

Strengths: Light, reasonably strong & relatively inexpensive.Weaknesses: Astonishingly low wear tolerance on the rim.Bottom Line: Brought in to replace & upgrade from the 217 rim, the 517 is a disappointment. It may be that " Maxtal " is lighter but stronger is debateable with rims splitting & more particularly astoniching rim wear. I was so appauled at the speed with which these rims wear in the consistently muddy conditions of Britain that I moved on to the CD version.I went through this " hardened " surface within one ride in the Peak District, lasting around 6 hours....this is not what I anticipated. These rims will not last as long as their predecessor the 217 & frankly I can't recommend them to anyone who will ride in poor conditiont.

Strengths: Cheap,Look good on a black bike.Weaknesses: Don't last, Rear cone came loose, Front cone bearing surface has worn outBottom Line: The rear cone came loose & locked the rear wheel solid, I had to carry my bike home!!, If you have any of these, check every thing is tight before you ride far from home. I'm going to replace my current hubs with 'Hope',then I know I'll get home.

Strengths: Good looks quite smooth good seals works very well for a few weeks, cheapWeaknesses: cones constantly come loose, bearing races cracked, freehub is naff, constantly slips and breaks very easily, heavy, costs almost as much as the hub to replace the freehubBottom Line: good cheap hub buy for xc, dh, or ds, it won't last forever and is only any good for trials if you can't afford anything else.

Strengths: light ish, seals are okWeaknesses: seals start to make mouse like sounds if you don't grease them up - should be done at the factory, and the freehub dies a lot quicker than 98 lxBottom Line: not bad, but like most 1999 shimano stuff it doesn't work quite like it should. Buy 98 or 00 stuff it's better quality

none so farBottom Line: I have been riding these wheels for a couple opf months now. They are plenty strong and fairly light. I do have to check the tension every few hundred miles though. No biggie. I am happy with these hubs, but I was looking to buy the XT's...but was unable to find them in stock nearby.
