Modern Bike

Submitted by Team Green Steve a Racer from Rockville, MD
Date Reviewed: February 11, 2009
Favorite Trail:Red Diamond
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $1700.00
Purchased At:Competitive Cyclist
Strengths:Great to have power as an option for the MTB.
Weaknesses:Durability
Similar Products Used:SRM on road bikes
Bike Setup:Titus Fireline 29er Exo with XTR/SRAM; Stan's rims
Bottom Line:The PT works great for the most part. Downloading the data is not as easy/reliable as SRM, but PT is the only viable option for MTB right now as far as I can tell.

Only issue for me has been durability. After almost a year of sporadic use, my hub disintegrated. Not sure yet what the problem is, but the freehub is coming out of the hub. Let's see what PT says about this...

Date Reviewed: August 8, 2008
Favorite Trail:D.E.C.
Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:Geneva Bicycle Cente
Strengths:Hub is stiff as it provides a large flange, hr, watts, upload and review workouts, easily swappable between bikes, wireless setup
Weaknesses:No altitude (but future upgrades will allow you to use Garmin 705, proprietary disc. The hub adds some extra weight, but as its at the hub it's hardly noticeable.
Similar Products Used:Ergomo Pro, Powertap wired (road bike)
Bike Setup:Gary Fisher Superfly, Supercaliber, Paragon
pt hub laced to Stans 355 29"
Bottom Line:I've had the powertap disc since it was pretty much available. Having wattage for training is the best thing you can possibly have to gauge and improve your performance. Some claim "It's to jumpy, or unreadable on the trail" While true in tech sections, but on long extended climbs or the flats it's great to now when and where to push the power levels out. Uploading and reviewing the files allow you to pinpoint your weakness and strengths and train harder to improve
Once connected, I've not had any problems with drop-outs (unless I stop for a bit). It held up awesome for a full 24 hour race in the rain and mud and never had water or battery issues.
Love that I can just swap it between bikes and go
