Weaknesses:none

Bike Setup:Zaskar, Fox f80x, xt, hope discs, these hubs and other shiny parts
Bottom Line:I've been using these hubs for a REALLY long time now. I've come from a BMX background so I know how to treat things harsh. These are super light xc hubs but they have taken a continual beating for nearly 10 years now. I just changed them onto 717's and I thought about dishing the hubs for some newer ones but decided they sill work perfectly so why bother. They are so simply put together it's rediculous, my gran could service them, I've only serviced them once, and I'm out every weekend in British weather. If you're thinking of buying some from ebay or wherever, then do it. You won't regret it.

Favorite Trail:Chiltern Hills or Coed y Brenin
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Purchased At:Evans Cycles
Strengths:Light. Bomb proof. Smooth. Low maintenance. Just fantastic quality.

Built with a Mavic 517 CD rim and DT spokes they weigh less than any Mavic or other manufacturers wheelset.

You don't need a bell to pass other riders - just stop pedaling and the beautiful noise from the freehub will let them know you're there.
Weaknesses:None. Some might say price - but you get what you pay for and they have actually saved me money in wheel re-builds.
Similar Products Used:Shimano XT and XTR, DT etc
Bike Setup:Specialised S-Works. Full XTR. Easton Monkeylite, Thompson post and Kore stem. Hope Ti hubs with Mavic 517 CD rims and DT Rev spokes
Bottom Line:I do lots of miles in all conditions - particulalry mud in the winter. I weigh about 220lbs and take no prisoners. I have broken every component on my bike at least once and have gone through many hub/rim combinatations until these.

I used to average about 1 wheel rebuild every 3 months and have not had one now for over 18 months.

I broke a spoke for the first time last week - but that was through fatigue at the hub end! I ran the wheel for 40 miles without the spoke and the wheel did not come out of true!

These are expensive. A pair custom built with Mavic X517 CD rims and DT rev spokes from a good wheel builder will cost over £300. However, they don't break. I reckon that they have saved me over £500 in new rims and hubs since I bought these.

... everything a hub should be...
Weaknesses:Absolutely nothing
Similar Products Used:Shimano Deore/LX/DX/XT/XTR - and another set of Hopes :)
Bike Setup:Cove Stiffee, Pace RC-37, XT/XTR, Hope/Mavic wheels, Race Face, Hope discs, etc...
Bottom Line:These have got to be the best hubs anyone has ever made. I'm on my second set (the old ones weren't disc compatible, so had to go!) in about 5 years.
The first set were used and abused for 2 years, with no problesm at all. When I replaced them, they still looked new, the bearings were perfect and the only marks on them were on the flanges where the spokes went through! Impossible to fault.
I now run another set, splined for my Hope C2 discs, and they have stood up to abuse equally well. They're still as smooth as the day I built them into a wheel, they look great, they're light... what else can I say? They are, for want of a better expression, perfect. I have nothing negative to say about them - even the price. These hubs last so long that the initial purchase price is exceptional value in the long term.
People buy Chris King headsets and keep them for 10 years, as the product simply refuses to die. I would say the same of these hubs.

No pings, no brake rubbing, and even with knobbies on they felt fast. I'll ride them for a while and see how they fare, but my initial impressions are sooo good. Date Reviewed: April 28, 2000
Favorite Trail:The Forest Of Dean
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Hope Lighweight front hub is still running smooth as silk after 3 years - and its still blue. The Hope Ti Glide Rear is exactly the same. Both have been raced, jumped, submerged in mud/water/snow, crashed and generally thrashed into the ground and have NEVER needed any work. These are awesome hubs. They were pretty expensive in the first place, but have been worth every penny. The set up I have is probably best for X-country or a general hard use trail bike. Duel riders or DH's might be better with Hope's other hubs - then you can fit the worlds best Disks on them too.
Weaknesses:A friend trashed the freehub internals on his, but that's the only problem i've ever heard about.
Similar Products Used:Shimano's before these. 500LX (how old!) and Deore DX (almost as bad). Havn't needed new hubs since I bough these Hope's.

Bottom Line:Made in the UK.

Strengths:The Big'uns Hope hubs.
fron and Rear offer very strong wheel construction and good axle strength (not easy to bend even through heavy abuse)
Weaknesses:No problem on the fron thub.
On the rear hub, one weakness is the inner ratchet mechanism for the freewheel. Teeth tend to break until the freewheel does not work anymore. You have to dismount the hub and change the mechanism. Good news, Hope has replaced the hub free of charge.
Bike Setup:Cannondale Beast of East, 121 mavics + Hope big uns hubs, Shimano xt components, Azonic bars
Bottom Line:I do trials riding, and the freewheel mechanism takes a lot of abuse, so it may be normal that eventually the teeth break. But its a pity that it happens on such sturdy and bombproof hubs. I'd recommend them for downhillers, where the freewheel isn't used as much to attack.

Weaknesses:Those that are purple annodised and have lasted since '93 look a bit naff now!
Similar Products Used:XTR
Bike Setup:Pace frame and fork, XTR
Bottom Line:Can't be beat. Why spend big on CrossMax when a hope hub, DT Revolutions and 517s weigh less and are stronger?

You will not need to touch the front.. ever!
(I've got a 7 year old one and it's been thrashed but looks and feels like new - I've worn through 3 rims in the same time)

The rear will need new bearings every 18months. Buy good quality ones (£20 a set) and you'll get no problems.

Freehub will last about 3 years if you clean it every 6 months or so.

What more can you ask for!

Buy one now (just choose a colour you think will age well!)

Buy the lightweight model for the front - it's fine, I can't feel any loss of tracking (though I use sturdy Pace forks)

Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Well constructed, tight tolerances, smooth operation, stylish (but then what isn't these days?), excellent customer service
Weaknesses:Not well suited for extremely muddy conditions, expensive to maintain.
Similar Products Used:STX. LX, XT, XTR, Chris King, White Speed Racer
Bike Setup:steel spokes, alloy nips, bontrager rims
Bottom Line:Although I had bad luck with my rear Ti-Glide hub, I was
impressed by the company's customer service. Unfortunately, the precision machining on my hub
was no match for the gritty mud typically encountered in the
Northwest, and the axle bearings lasted less than a
season. The cartridge bearings were fine however, and Hope
very generously sent me two new axle bearings. Although one
of the bearings they sent me was the wrong size, I was able
to find a proper sized one at my LBS for $7.

Also, my hub is several years old and they have made many
changes since, so doubtless the mud seals have been improved since my misfortunes.

As a whole I would recommend this hub, but choose CK or Shimano if you intend to ride in muddy conditions. Otherwise, expect to replace bearings frequently.

I have had no problem with cracking flanges, even though I tend to overtension my wheels...

Five stars overall for customer service and a continually-evolving high-quality product. Many companies stop R&D once a product becomes profitable, Hope seems committed to incremental improvement.

Three stars for value because Ti just ain't worth the money.

The Suspension Front hubs keeps on spinning and spinning...lightweight and great seals. Never had to take them apart(not suggesting that people not take care of their hubs). The Ti Glide rear hub has four cartridge bearings, Ti freehub (even Chris Kings don't have Ti freehub bodies), easy to take apart for maintenance, same great seals, gorgeous to look at, light and strong. Who says you can't have cake and eat it too?The nice thing too is not every Tom, John and Harry has a set.I wouldn't hesitate for a second in getting another set. My first set was stolen by some stupid punk. I highly recomment these hubs to anyone and Hope has great customer service to boot. These and Chris Kings definitely top my list for favourite hubs.

The bearings are incredible. My friend had a ultra lite flange crack - he telephoned hope, he sent it in and simply got a new one. These are not disposible hubs and I find it strange that you jump to the conclusion that because your hub broke all hope hubs must be gubbins. If you really did blow 135 quid on a Ti rear why don't you get it repaired ? I'm tempted to think your review is false.
Anyway I'm finally going to review my front suspension hub. It's been great, I've never had a problem with it, and it stiffens the steering nicely although the pace Evo's are very stiff by themselves. Top stuff.

Hope hubs kick ass!!! I know, this sounds like one of those dumb-ass reviews with no basis in fact, but the truth is these are the best hubs I've ever used, and I have no intention of buying any other hubs in the foreseeable future. The hubs are well sealed and simple and come well greased. They use a minimum of moving parts, and very high-quality sealed bearings.I have two sets of Hope Big'Un hubs that I use on My Rotec. I initially had them on a Ventana El Matador using a Hope Universal Brake which requires a shorter than normal axle. Hope sells the rear hub with one of three axles, the short axle, a standard 135mm QR axle or setup for a 12mm thru-axle. The Rotec however requires a 150mm axle. I called Rotec in England, and within a week, I had custom machined 150mm axles. They only cost me $15! Who's customer service can top that?Hope has hubs for every application from single-speed to full on World-Cup XC and DH racers, whether you need disc compatible hubs or not.Oops! forgot my name on that last one!Oh and one more thing: Grommit, don't jet wash your bike!

This is a good hub (i had the hope fatso). It has good rigidity, my fork seemed to steer better and flex less as soon as i bought it. it comes well greased and feels and runs totally smoothly straight out of the box. its only problem is it doesn't come well with large amounts of mud and can start to sound a little grindy/gritty after a few muddy winter rides. however if you take the hub apart you find this mud is between the outside of the hub and the bearing and that the bearings are still fine. however be careful when jet washing your bike.

RULE BRITANIA!!!!!!!!God damn it, need to write more for the word count. If you're looking out for new forks, try to get hold of some PACE RC36's - see the reviews.

Excellent! I've had a standard front hub and HG rear hub for 3.5 years now. The front has yet to need its bearings replaced and the rear has just had its first set of replacements fitted - I'd say the old gripe about bearing longevity has been dealt with. Plus, the loud click from the freehub is brilliant at warning walkers of your imminent arrival. The standard front hub is great with decent forks such as Pace RC36's.

I had a Hope Fatso athe the start of '96 which was lush! Nice and smooth running even after months on crap weather. After about 6 months I noticed that the flanges had cracks in them where they had been pushed onto the titanium shell. Hope were really good and replaced the hub (I think that they actually put new flanges on the old shell). All was fine at first, but the same thing happened again after about the same amount of time. I got rid of it after that. At the start of '97, I got a Hope disc on a Fatso hub. This is still going strong with no problem which is a good sign considering the extra stresses put on a disc hub. I think the '96 must have just been a duffer. I still like Hope stuff and I would recommend it. 3 red hot chilli peppers for the '96, but 5 for the '97 disc version. Lush!!!

Simply the best! A fine example of British engineering, fully servicable, light, strong, dependable and reasuring expensive - they will out last cheap and nasty ones from the big S many times over (UK riding is hard on hubs.) Plus if you have a problem the boys at HOPE TECHNOLOGY will do all sorts for you, right good service!(Each Ti rear comes with free cool clicky noise.)

These hubs are superb. They save an unbelievable amount of weight over standard Shimano hubs. Not only are they superb quality but they let everyone know you’ve got them with the Ti - Glide’s unmistakable sound. There is a wide range of spare parts so they can be rebuilt if necessary, which is nice. Not only are the hubs superb but their discs are the best brakes out there.

The Hope Fatso hub is one hell of a hub. When I bought it I was worried that there may be more flex in my forks, as I had previously using a big bolt on hub. However, I cannot detect any flex whatsoever in my forks, even though they get a fair hammering quite often. Not only are they incredibly stiff and strong but they run incredibly smoothly, despite being covered in crappy, gritty mud and rarely being cleaned. On top of all that, they look absolutely gorgeous. If you're in the market for a suspension hub then you cannot do any better, except possibly the Hope Big 'Un!

These hubs are simply the best!!! Strong words I hear you cry. Over the last 4 years I have sold many, many custom wheels that I build myself, without a doubt in my mind these are the most reliable hubs that I have ever sold, Nuke proofs exploded!, White's fell apart, Hugi's seize solid!!!!,and lets not mention Hershey!!!!! Sure you might have to replace the bearings every 2 years but I think we can live with that!!!!! I've just put together 3 pairs of the BIG UN downhill hubs they look INCREDIBLE They're not much more than XTR and a whole lot nicer!!! So take the plunge

8 months ago I splashed cash on a second -hand bike with Hope suspension on front and Ti-glide at the rear, laced to Ritchey rims. Top stuff. They're ultra smooth, and a few drops of oil in the general direction of the bearings every two to three rides keeps them that way. If you've got front suspension but a non-suspension hub, go to Hope. In fact, when you next get a set of wheels upgrade to Hope anyway - for a small increase in price you get hubs with better action than Shimano and last five times as long.

HOPE BIG'UN rear
Had it three month, looks f'ing good, makes an f'ing strong wheel (straight gauge, 121CD). Only problem I've had was that the non drive bearing got some grit in it, its a sealed type but the spindle cover seems to be a bit of a dust trap and can channel shit into the bearing. Or it could have been a shite seal on the bearing. Next time I shall pack the gap with grease. Overall ace hub.

I have a Fatso on the front laced to a Mavic 121 and have had no problems. At the back, I had a Ti-Glide which looked great and made a lovely clicking noise, but both the freehub and the flange next to it cracked and it's a write off. 140 quid!! Ouch. Happened climbing a very steep hill offroad in bottom gear. I have heard of more of these hubs going awol under duress. They are a lightweight hub and my advice is to steer clea of em if you are beefy put in major welly in on steep climbs. Since then I also broke the inside gubbins on an LX - so they don't seem to be up to big torque either. I am getting a DT Hugi which is rated to be the strongest around.

I've been running Ti rear and suspension front for 4 years now and they still run as sweet as new - zero maintenance. British mud, London potholes, Spanish dust and headplants into French ditches haven't hurt a bit. The only problem I've had is when changing my old XTR 8-speed cassette for a new ('97) XT one - there's some lateral play in the cassette that needs shimming out. Great product.

I've had these hubs built up to some Mavic ceramics for over a year and i have had ZERO problems. I have the Titanium Fatso front and the standard Ti rear and these are the best hubs I have eveer had. I've never done any maintenance and i tend to treat my wheels pretty badly. I never think about them until someone says, neat hubs! I would absolutely recommend them. I too have red hubs and ruby red nipples like Garrett. Too baad the 217 ceramics couldn't hold up as well.

I purchased these hubs about a month ago, so far they had worked flawlessly. Before these hubs, I had LX hubs w/sun rims and irc tires, I now have mavic 217, Specialized Master/Controll tires (kevlar), alloy nipples, 15/16 spokes, and of course a hope hubset. When I went to weigh my bike I had saved 1 7/8 lbs. I couldnt believe that I saved that much. My only complaint is the thick grease used in the rear hub. These are cross-country hubs that I expect to last me a long time. And the hoops with red hubs and red nipples look awsome!

I've had a pair of Hope hubs for over one year now, both attached to Panaracer Shields, as I am running Hope Hydraulic discs. The hubs are excellent, I regularly ride through water (hey its wet in Barnsley), and nearly every ride includes a river crossing where the hubs are BELOW the level of the river/stream. They have never failed me, and the rear hub is still as loud as ever. Excellent hubs, excellent brakes. 5 star review.

I recently purchased a Hope Suspension (front)/Ti Glide (rear) hubset with Mavic 217s and an XTR cogset. I was running an XT/Mavic 217/237 combo previously. I got a great deal on the wheelset at my LBS ($440)The construction seems very solid on the Hopes. I can notice a difference in stiffness over the XT front hub I'd been using. The rear is very loud in coasting, which I don't mind. So far no problems at all and they look cool to boot.

I've recently bought some suspension forks and the hub works great with them with no flex at all. Another example of fine British engineering.

I have been riding an Ultralight front hub and a Ti glide rear hub for the past
year and a half. The hubs are laced to mavic 217 rims with dt d.butted spokes.
The hubs are the most solid and reliable that i have ever seen. They have been
ridden over 4500 miles and not once have I had to service the bearings - which
are sealed. They still runs are smooth as new, and click just as loudly. The hubs
are frequently jet washed, and on a secent inspection of the hub bodies and
bearing i found no signs of wear or play. My hubs have been severly punished in
the Welsh mud and were a valuable investment. (i'm even getting another set for
my new race bike.)

For the last year I have been riding on a set of Rock Shox Quadra 21 SE with 93 LX hub.
I had been very pleased with performance of both, until I switched to a set Judys.
What a difference. After a few rides I decided that the LX had to be updated as the barings were on their last legs.
I had a 96 LX wheel made but felt that it still felt weak.So I sold the new wheel on and had a Hope Fatso hub laced up .
this must have been one of my best moves I have ever made.
There is no flex at all and the barings are smoother than a babies bum.
The LX wheel cost $65 the FATSO cost $90 The price differnce only $25 the real differnce
A far better wheel that rides and lasts much longer.
Thanks for a great WEB site a 5 star rating.
