Strengths:looks nice
Weaknesses:well...where do I start?...I had the hub for a year and it became very loose. Turned out the freehub had to be replaced. Local distributer and Hope UK helped me out and got me the steel freehub instead. 10 rides with the new freehub and the entire hub body cracked into half from the drive side.
I am waiting now to hear back from Hope...

Weaknesses:cost too much, a singel hub is more expensive than my Halo wheels

Bottom Line:there are Industrial Nine and Chris King out there, but Hope is still too expensive for a hub that doesn't come with too much design highlight. it's reliable but ordinary.

Strengths:Smooth, decent engagement (when new).
Weaknesses:Unreliable. Freehub is done after 10 months.
Similar Products Used:Transition, Azonic, Bombshell, Loco - on my way to Chris King now.
Bottom Line:After suffering a couple freehub failures (I'm <180 lbs) on the Locos and Bombshells, I decided that hub reliability was key for me. After all, if it fails you're walking out. So I decided to shell out as much for a rear hub, as I normally pay for an entire rear wheel.

Guess what? I walked my bike out today.

Even if customer service is great (which judging by this forum, it won't be), I paid the premium to avoid having a failure that kills a ride. Only got 10 months worth of riding - about the same as the Loco rear wheel from Performance Bikes. Only difference - when THAT failed, I wen into the store and got a new wheel on the spot.

Here, I have to unlace, mail in, and re-build.

Chris King, here I come.

Favorite Trail:Depends on my mood
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $175.00
Purchased At:monkamoo.com
Strengths:Typical Hope quality, solid 4 pawl engagement, easy to service and convert between axle formats, price, colors, loudness
Weaknesses:limited number of points of engagement, loudness, aluminum freehub body, loudness
Similar Products Used:Shimano and Bontrager hubs
Bike Setup:Heavily modified Gary Fisher Cake 2 DLX with hand build Hope wheels
Bottom Line:Let's get this out of the way first: these hubs are loud and they click, not buzz like Kings. This may be a benefit if you've got a lot of hikers and dog walkers out on your trails, but if you hate loud hubs it'll drive you nuts. Personally, I found that after a couple rides I hardly noticed the sound anymore.

Ok, now that we've gotten past the sound: These are really solid and dependable hubs. I've put a lot of miles under my wheels since I built them up and I have had no issues with the Hope hubs at all. I'm not a small rider and these hubs engage *very* securely. I've looked at the possibility of servicing the hubs, and it seems like a straight forward thing...it also looks easy to convert these hubs for when I go to my next frame (with will be a through-axle rear).

The main gripes, which are fairly common, are the lack of engagement points (Kings and Hadleys are in the 72 poe range, these are down at 24)and the aluminum freehub body. If you're not running a full carrier cassette (Shimano XT or higher, SRAM 980 or higher) the cassette can mark it up. Personally, I haven't gone to a high engagement hub yet, so I'm not missing that feature (yet) and I run an XT cassette, so I'm not worried about the freehub body.

Who should buy....well, if you don't want to drop the big bucks for Hadley or King hubs and can live with the fewer points of engagement, these are solid hubs that are likely the best value out there for a "premium" class hub.

Bike Setup:Orange Msisle, Rockshox Pikes, FSA Pig, Hope DH stem, Avid BB7's, Mavic rims, Shimano Hone Cranks, Single-speed.
Bottom Line:I have a front hub (set up for 20mm axel), a rear hub (with a steel cassette body upgrade, and a rear single-speed/trials hub. And really this is three reviews in one.

The SS/trials is (IMO) the best product hope have ever produced. The zero-dish and wide flanges make for light, yet near indestructable wheels (especially with 36 spokes). The shorter cassette hub body means that you can run 5 sprockets (8-speed style) out back if you want gears (who wants 8/9/10 out back anyways!) and the shorter cassette hub body means it it lighter too! Steel cassette hub body as standard for durability and five sets of bearings mean that the hub is very strong and super-smooth! Pickups are 48 per rotation (which is practically instantanious) and the buzz makes the

The standard MTB rear is noisier due to the four pawls engaging simeltaneously and needs re-greasing every 3 months or so to keep it quiet(ish). But this is a super-easy job. These need to be supplied with a steel cassette hub body as standard as the aluminium one is just cheese with even aluminium-carrier cassettes! Upgrade via your local Hope stockist ASAP. (NB: Halfords is s hope stockist.)

The front hub is apparrently simple to convert, but I would like to see a bolt-up option with it like the rear hubs, although preferablly with an entire 10mm axel for rigidity rather than just the bolts that are used with rears.

In conclusion, EXCELLENT hubs with some minor flaws that Hope could easily sort. RECOMENDED.

Bike Setup:'07 Fuel EX 7 on Pro2/Stan's Olympic rim wheelset. Running various non-tubless Kenda tires
Bottom Line:The Hubs are great. Smooth rolling. Never had a quick engaging hub until this one and it's awesome. Loud but not annoying. Everyone says the same so I don't understand why that guy would be disappointed that they were loud. If he doesn't like loud hubs than these aren't for him obviously. Servicing is easy once you RTFM (Google it if you don't know what I'm talking about). The only pain was taking off the cassette when servicing. Since the Body is aluminum, the cassette will bite into it so it get's a bit stuck. You gotta wiggle it a bit to get it out. It's easy once you get the hang of it. Take out the Cassette lock ring, put back the skewer tight on the hub to hold it all together, fight off the cassette, then take out the skewer and everything will come apart by hand. It really is great.

They are poorly designed for maintenance, similar to Bulb but not designed to easily take apart for needed yearly maintenance.

I've wasted the original seal and bought 2 more. And will try very thick axle grease to quiet to reasonable noise.

Waste of money and time building the wheel unless you really want obnoxious hub noise.
