Strengths: Light and simple to serviceWeaknesses: Really flexible axleBottom Line: I was stoked to get this hub as I really like the Hope headset I have on this bike. Unfortunately if anything this hub makes me feel like a really powerful stud as it doesn't seem to take much effort on my part to pull the hub out of the right dropout when I get out of the saddle to crank hard up a hill or from a stop. I have to really crank the skewer down to keep the wheel in place. I have NEVER had a problem with any other hub in this frame, so it isn't the frame. And having to crank the skewer down that much seems to make the bearings drag a bit. Suck!
The only other time I have experienced something similar was on old Mavic hubset with alloy axles I had built into a wheelset on my old road back back in the late 80s. If I stood up and hammered and the skewer wasn't really cranked down the wheel would cock in the chromed Campy horizonal dropouts. Thing is the frame I am using the Hope hub in has vertical dropouts, yet when I really hammer the wheels pulls out of the right dropout and jams the wheel into the left chainstay.
I know some dingleberry on this site will call BS on me, but what I wrote above is 100% fact.
Thing is I was told by 'experts' on this site that a larger diameter alloy axle was supposed to be stiffer than a 10mm steel axle in an old XTR hub. Apparently not. Also physically not since Al is only something like a 1/3 as stiff as steel and an Al tube has to increase by something like 50% to become as stiff as a 10mm steel hollow axle.
But what leaves me even more puzzled is I can't duplicate this issue on this bike with either a wheel built with a TNT hub (Ti axle) or Ringle Super 8 (Al axle?) So what's the deal?

Strengths: Looks good, seems to work fine.Weaknesses: Noisy!Bottom Line: Well, I've never had problems with hubs- either my old Shimanos or my current Hopes. The Hopes work fine and the 'boutique' look is great. The only gripe I have is that the rear hub is NOISY. Whilst this might be the sign of a good hub, had I known just how noisy the clicking would be, I would have looked for something else. One of the things I like about cycling is that it is so quiet when cruising around and the Hopes really intrude aurally.

Strengths: Lightweight. Replaceable cartridge bearings. Almost bulletproofWeaknesses: Inner ratchet drive ring can break looseBottom Line: I've had mine for 4 years and had to replace the cartridge bearings after 3 years of hard XC use, thats OK, not too hard to do, $25 in beaarings and were back to new condition.
Now the BAD NEWS. Long steep hill, the inner ratchet drive ring broke loose from the hub. I sent the parts in and Hope is going to rebuild/replace for $50. That is the mark of a good company to make right after 4 years of use.
