Strengths:Well, the axle didn't break.
Weaknesses:uh.... yeah. the material they used to make this hub is inferior.
Similar Products Used:Shimano XT circa 1990 which lasted for ages until disc brakes come out. Ahh, technology.
Bike Setup:Ripley with as much old, bombproof components I accumulated over the years. (Sans DT Hub)
Bottom Line:just like some other reviews, I was climbing up a hill, not a mtn, and the hub literally exploded apart on the drive side. Incredibly disappointed.

This product is simply a piece of crap.

Favorite Trail:Any I'm riding
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Light, easy to service, great looking.
Weaknesses:Overpriced. Oh yeah, and I broke it.
Similar Products Used:Name it.
Bike Setup:I've got five.
Bottom Line:First, to dismiss some users' gripes. 1) I don't know what people are talking about with delayed engagement when starting to pedal. The star-ratchet mechanism (NOT pawls) has I-don't-remember-how-many numerous teeth on it to ensure quick engagement, and I always got very quick engagement as soon as I pushed a pedal down. 2) Not that I needed to replace the bearings ever, but I did take apart the hub several times WITHOUT tools to clean it out, and re-lube the star ratchet (that keeps it from freezing up on you, fellas. It's called "maintenance".). If I needed to take the bearings out, it wouldn't be hard with a simple punch and hammer. I've done this with Bontrager, American Classic, Ritchey, etc hubs.

That said, I did manage to crack the rear hub, in the same fashion as a few others here said: down the drive-side flange and about 2/3 the way across to the other side. During a ride, I noticed the drivetrain "slipping", but not skipping, as I would climb moderate hills. When I climbed a steep one, the cranks would spin a full half-crank with no forward movement. I'd stop and walk up the hill, be very mad, and keep going. Twice I stopped and checked to see what was wrong, and somehow didn't see the huge crack through the hub. While this was all happening, the wheel was getting more and more out-of-true of course.

Good news is, I sent it back to DT, they sent me back a brand new updated 240S hub, free of charge! I guess since these cost twice as much as they should in the first place, they can afford to do so. Anyhow, rather than breaking another one, I bought a beefier hub, sold the replacement, and made $80 in the process!

Bottom line is, if you ride XC, race, or are easy on your stuff, these hubs ROCK. They're lighter and cheaper than Kings. What I didn't tell you is, I'm an aggressive rider, and these hubs were on my 6" travel AM/FR bike that I like to jump alot. (I was trying to lighten up that bike, wheels seemed like a good place at the time...) I do alot of urban assault riding, and drop off anything I think I can do. These hubs are NOT made for that.

XC: good hub choice FR/DH: BAD hub choice

Bottom Line:Cracked the rear hub from the drive-side flange to the center of the hub while climbing up hill. Judging from comments on this site and stories from other mountain biking buddies, this is a recurring problem for the Hugi 240. There are too many other reliable high quality hubs in this price range to justify purchasing this product.

Strengths:Lightweight, somewhat durable (only had it 6 months-no problems)
Weaknesses:Its Ugly, weak driveside.A bit expensive.
Similar Products Used:Cris King, Shimano XT, Hope.
Bike Setup:Stans Olympic rims and Hugi 240s hubs.
Bottom Line:Ive been racing these hubs on my race wheelset for 6 months now. Absolutely no problems as far as function goes. They are holding up well. BUT.....I never thought Id be able to tell the difference between these and Cris King. I was dead wrong. The Hugis do not engauge nearly as well as the Kings. Sorry Hugi, Kings are far better at that. But Im not willing to pay that price after my 2nd kid. dont get me wrong, Hugi is a good hub, but deep down we all know nothing is better than a king hub. Ill just have to live with the little bit of spinning before engagement,I guess.

*Quality construction
Weaknesses:*Price
*Skewers not included
Similar Products Used:*XT
*XTR

Bike Setup:Bullit, XT, Psylo, 240/Mavic 317
Bottom Line:It amazes me how long these hubs have lasted. Through 3+ years of tortuous use in mud, sand, ice, water, etc., I have yet to replace the bearings. The front bearings are still silky smooth, but the rear bearings are getting rough and should be replaced, but after roughly 3000 offroad miles, it's amazing that these things remain so bulletproof. The initial price is steep, but well worth it and quality/longevity is par none. Hard to say anything bad about these things.......it makes my list of best mtb product I've bought in the last 15 years.

Only the King headset, XT/XTR skewers, and Shimano chainrings make my list of mtb components that have no equal. I suppose I can add the 240's to that list as well.

Favorite Trail:Too Many to name
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Light weight, positive engagement, easy to disassemble and clean, smoothe rolling.
Weaknesses:I broke a rear hub about six months after purchase. It split through the drive side flange in two spots 180 degrees apart. In the middle of a clinb no less. Going along and the the hub freewheeled. I'm probably a little heavier than this was designed for though, so if your under 190 lbs. you probably won't have that problem. DT/Hugi USA warrantied the hub for me, I just had to rebuild the wheel.
Similar Products Used:Chris King (Front only); Shimano XT, XTR; WTB Paradigm;(This was my first disc hubset)
Bike Setup:Dean Colonel, Hayes Mag plus, SID, XT/XTR, King Headset, Mavic 317's, Race Face Deus, Thomson, 959's
Bottom Line:DO NOT BUY this hubset if your a big guy.(190 Plus) These are nice hubs but just don't hold up to big guys. They are sensitive to quick release tension, so be as consistent as possible and DO NOT overtighten it. I think that's what made mine crack ultimately. Star Ratchet system is a simple and ingenious design. It's easy to take apart and clean, and I recommend you do so about every six months. More if wet or real dusty. Front hub has been flawless, zero problems. I get some flex to the point of rotor rub up front, but that's probably fork, not hub.

Bike Setup:commencal vip II, xtr, the fun stuff, race face cranks, egg beaters, useless carbon handle bars, super sexy stem....
Bottom Line:great weight and good performance. It could be that i ride extra hard.. I have broken seats, seat posts, frames, rims, spokes and even cranks, but i weigh only 140-150 lbs, so weight is not an issue.

The hubs have a frozen feeling, are locked up, and the prowlers are just not smooth. Its been 8 months of riding and i thought i would see at least a year. At least they survived the 6 month mark. Still to this day I must say White Industries has been my favorite. I got three good years from their hub before I had a play issue. Huegi makes a great hub for racing and for staying light, but for racking in the miles and beating on the bike.. they aren't the right choice.

Bottom Line:After one year of use, my rear hub failed last weekend. Cracked from the flange to the center of the hub. Never seen anything quite like that before. Fortunately, DT Swiss didn't waste any time and sent me a new hub (and spokes) within a few days, and I should be laced up and ready to go this weekend. Still, if I couldn't lace my own wheel, this would be an expensive experience.

I suppose these things happen, even to good products, and I should be glad that DT Swiss backed up their product. But I would still think twice before buying this hub again.

Duration Product Used:2 Years
Purchased At:LBS replacement for Bontrager
Strengths:Light weight, sleek looking and nearly silent sounding. Instant engagement on the rear hub which makes those nail biting steep rock and root climbs seem to go on much easier. 2 years of constant riding through a lot of muddy and wet riding conditions (in Austria) have proven to me that these high end hubs were well worth the investment. My thanks to Mike T. on helping so many of us here that participate at Mt.BikeReview.com be able to maintain these hubs with basic cleaning and grease application. Due to all the mud/wet conditions that I have been riding in, I did the maintenance as a measure of prevention. The hubs are working as well today as they were when I first got them 2 years ago.
Weaknesses:None for the set that I have.
Similar Products Used:The only other disc hub products I have used are the Mavic disc hubs on my SpeedCity's.
Bike Setup:Stock 2002 Trek 8000 upgraded to Hügi 240 Disc Hubs with Avid 185mm mechanical disc brakes.
Bottom Line:The bottom line is "would I buy a set of these hubs again?" The answer to that question is yes.

My 2002 Trek 8000 came with the stock Bontrager hubs and wheels. The riding conditions in Austria due to rain and all the mud caused severe rim wear-through with my rim brakes and I had a rim fail soon after I purchased the bike. The LBS cut me a pretty good deal to swap over to disc and had their racing team wheel builder lace the Hügi 240 Disc hubs to some Mavic 317 rims for me at a very reasonable price. At the time, I knew nothing about disc hubs (or brakes) and the Hügi's came highly recommended from the LBS. It was one of the best investments to date for me. That first ride when I felt the engagement of the rear hub was a real pleasure that continues to this day.

The Chris Kings of Europe? Yes. DT Swiss/Hügi pretty much rules the mountain biking scene in Austria, Switzerland and Germany - so I can't say anything outside of "now I understand why". It's a quality product. These are great hubs and well worth the investment as well as worth taking care of through regular maintenance. I hope to get many more miles/years of use out of these hubs (I'll be following Mike T's advice). I think anyone considering high end disc hubs should at least consider taking a look at these when making a choice.

Price Paid: $280.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:The weight, lightweight, the lightness of its weight, and how light it is...
Super smooth when not pedalling, I mean smoooooootth...
And very silent when not pedalling, not giving the sound like CKs which make me headache.
Weaknesses:It's way too light to trust! You will be a careful rider when first riding them.
Similar Products Used:American Classic Disc. Funn DH disc. Ringle disc.
Bike Setup:Wheels are XM819 with DT competition on these hubs(240s).
2004 Small size Blur with 2004XT. Hayes HFX-9XC oil disc. Thomson stem and post. Fox F100X. Eggbeater.
Bottom Line:First of all, I'm reviewing on the 240s, the top-end of DT, even higher grade than the Hugi240, but there's not such product category here, so I come here.

I've these laced to Mavic XM819 with DT competition. I choose the competition since I want a really tough wheel which will not flex at all for my XC riding, and the competition was doing more than that. The weight gain was not any issue to me, coz the hub made it all up!

These hubs are the real deal, been riding on them for 3 weeks now, over 200km. And they hold up the job very well, fine engagement, super smooth rolling when not pedalling, and they are very silent! I only notice they make sound when I pay some attention to find the noise!

They survive for a few dozens of 2-3 foot drops, I mean drops from some high pavements to hard surface concrete fire roads, so I am pretty sure they can take the abuse of some 4-5 foot drops in the wild.

Will come up again when I have pay some more time on it, probally 2 months later or sooner IF, I mean IF, there is any problem. For now, more than 5 flamming for both value and performance, coz you can't pay more to have even better products than these, they're already the best!

Strengths:Light weight, looks cool
Weaknesses:Seals are awful, and the palls froze up after only 6 months. Engagement has never been very good; you have to spin pretty far before getting power transmission to the rear.
Similar Products Used:Chris King, Syncros, Shimano
Bike Setup:i-drive, hope minis, mavic 317/hugi 240 with 14g straight spokes and brass nipples
Bottom Line:The hub was OK, but certainly not great. I was disappointed with the engagement from day one. I don't know if it's just my particular hub, and it has been a really wet winter, but I still seem to be the only person in my riding group who has had a hub fill with gunk and freeze up the palls. It's hard to keep up with your buddies when the hub freewheels in both directions.

I expected better than this for the price. Rebuilding it requires a fairly expensive set of custom HUGI tools that none of the local shops own or are excited about buying. Seriously, how many Hugi 240 hubs can they expect to have brought to them for a rebuild? How many would justify spending $100+ on a set of tools? So I have cleaned up the one accessible pall and will ride it until I can get something else, then maybe try to send it back to them for service. It stinks to have to give up the hub for weeks while sending it to Colorado or wherever to get it fixed...

Next time I will go with Chris King. More shops can service them and they seem to be a better product anyway - certainly the engagement is better. Or maybe I will try the new Shimano XTR hubs - lightweight disc interface and VERY serviceable, standard, cone arrangement.

Bottom Line:I actually have a set of Hayes Superlite hubs. These hubs are re-badged Hugi 240 disc hubs (pricepoint.com recently had 'em on sale for $150 for a front and rear set!!!). These hubs have been great thus far, I have been hammering these for 5 months now. i had my set built by Larry Mettler at Mtn High Cylery for about $340 laced with DB DT spokes and brass nipples...awesome builds quality and price!
There are 2 versions of the Hugi 240 hubs. The earlier version had only 1 spring in the ratchet mech., the newer ones have 2 springs, one on each side of the ratchets. The 2 spring version is much more reliable...but the 1 spring version came be updated to 2 springs...like Mike T. stated below. You just gotta loose one of the spacers and replace it with a spring.

I am amazed by how easy it is to clean and relube the internals. Just yank of the cassette and the hub body comes along with it. Use a rag to clean up everything, and relube. Slide the cassette/body back on and you're done!!! I recently used Eglunds Slick Honey to re-lube my hubs and they have been dead quiet for a couple of rides, try it out!!!

I really wanted a set of high end disc hubs and was about to spring for a set of King ISO/VXCs, but then I found this deal, man...am I glad I went this way. If you're a XC rider looking for a set of light disc hubs, look no futher!

Bottom Line:This is an update to my review below eighteen months after the last one. The hubs are now 3+ years old and probably have 10,000+ miles on them. They have worked flawlessly in all this time. I've re-greased the ratchets once since the last report (5 mins tops and NO tools).

William below has re-canted his earlier "no tools" rant and it been noted that "no tools maintenance" refers to lubing the ratchets. Changing bearings, which DOES need tools comes under "overhaul".

I recently e-mailed DT-Swiss on this topic and here's the conversation -

Me - "This one has been mentioned by a couple of people - you advertise a "No tool concept" and a "No tool maintenance concept" while in actual fact only the drive mechanism is serviceable without tools and the rest of the hub requires expensive special tools. I've tried to explain before that bearing replacement probably falls outside of "maintenance" and enters the "overhaul" category but the quote "No tool concept" has being thought misleading. What answer do you have?"

Them - "I've fielded many questions about the no tools concept too. It simply means that you do not need any special tools to perform normal maintenance such as ratchet cleaning and re-greasing. This should be done 1 to 3 times (on average) a year, depending on your riding conditions. This is a 5 min procedure, even for the inexperienced.
When you open up our tech manuals, the first picture you see is of a tool set, which looks scary and complicated. I can see how this seems misleading. The tools are required for more in-depth work such as bearing replacements. Want cartridge bearings? Then you need tools to install them. If tools were not part of the equation, then your bearing would simply fall out and the hub would be chronically loose. Show me a hub of any quality that does not require tools for complete tear-downs."

That should end the confusion.

Great hubs! Get 'em.

When looking for hubs for my new Turner, I wanted high quality and dependability, but I really was tired of my loud Chris Kings. I know a lot of King purests will say so what, but I am not alone.

The problem was, many of the "works" hubs had great reputations for reliability, but the word on the street is they are all obnoxious. Different, but obnoxious.

But the bike shop I went with said to try the Hugi's. They said they are lighter than the Kings (cool), are extremely reliable, and that the 2002 version is quieter than the older ones.

Well, they are quieter than my wife's XTR hubs! I'm talking night and day difference from my Kings.

And I have to say, riding a silent bike makes it feel expensive and high quality.

I also test rode DT Hugis for freeride bikes. They were quiet too.

Bottom Line:I originally owned a first generation set of 28 sp non disc 240's. One of the bearings in the rear cassette went bad and DT Swiss replaced it under warranty with no questions or hassles in about 3 days! In fact, they replaced 2 of the 3 rear bearings, the cassette body and installed later generation springs, all without being asked. Now that is first rate warranty service.

As regards my 240 discs, I have used these for two years now on 3 different frames with absolutely NO problems. I clean and lube the rear hub assy. about twice a season using nothing more than a rag and some Pedro's Synlube.

The bottom line is that these puppies are lighter and less expensive than Kings with the only downside being you have to occassionally clean and lube the rear hub.

If you really want to save some bucks, you can buy Hayes Super Light Disc hubs for as little as $149.00 set. The only caveat is that they have a 1yr warranty versus the Hugi branded hubs at 3yrs. Also, any warranty issues would go through Hayes rather than directly to DT Swiss.

Bottom Line:Ok, I guess I was a little hard on DT Swiss. I didn't mean to imply that the tools are not available. I did a google search, and found a place where you can buy the special tool kit online: http://www.biketoolsetc.com/. Also, as indicated in my review, and by DT Swiss, you can always ask your LBS to order them.

The kit costs $80, give or take.

Apparently, the Hugi hub is not the only hub requiring a special tool kit to rebuild. A Cris King hub aparently requires a $100 tool kit. Also, it should be noted that the Hugi hub can be partially serviced (clean, regrease & lub ratchet) with no tools at all. That's cool.

Anyway, if these hubs are as good as everyone says they are, I may be too old to bike before I need to replace the bearings...

I'm adding five chilis to help balance out my zero chili, which was just out of frustration.

Bottom Line:Here is my gripe: DT Swiss markets this hub as a "No Tools" component. So I check the online manual to see what I can do to service my hugi 240 disc hubs, and find out you need about 7 special tools to do anything besides grease the hub ratchet. Then I email DT Swiss and ask "Where can I get these tools?" and they email back, basically saying, "Sorry, not for sale to you, Mr. consumer, ask your local bike shop."
Hello? Earth to DT Swiss. Here is a concept for you: self service hubs. I have a new name for your hubs: "No Tools Available" Hubs, or better yet: "Unservicable Hubs." I guess I'm just supposed to throw these things away when the bearings wear out.
I'm sure they work great. But the point is, sometimes things wear out or break, and when that happen, some people who buy your hubs would like to work on them.
Either DT Swiss is simply not clear on the concept, or they are knowingly engaged in deceptive advertising. Thus, zero score. Sorry DT Swiss. Get a clue.

Bottom Line:lot's of reviewers say these are expensive hubs... they are less $$ than other hubsets in the same class, by far... that makes these a deal in my book.

I had another wheelset with straight hugi 240s and liked them so much that when I switched to discs I didn't even think about going with anything else. Then I noticed that you can get the DT swiss hub for a few bucks less than the Hugi branded version, and they are the SAME FRICKIN HUB.

After a 1,000 miles of heat, dust, mud, and abuse, they have held up great with no maintenance. Highly recomend these hubs if you are in the market for a highend wheelset.

Bottom Line:I've had these hubs for two years and I have not had one problem with them. I've lubed them twice with the factory lube and it's so dead easy you could do it on the trail with no tools but I can't see why ya'd wanna.

They must have their, reported, engagement problems licked because I sprint short steep hills for fun and they just take the beating. I do lots of endurance riding too so they have lots of miles on them. The bearings are juuuust fine.

I weighed 'em too and they are within one gram of factory specs. Thanks for the lack of BS and thanks for great light strong hubs DT!

Bottom Line:I've got about 1000 miles on these hubs and the front has been flawless. The rear hub required bearings after 100 miles and was completely replaced under warranty. Now the free hub sticks and it takes me a while to 'free' it up before I can ride. Once it's going it behaves okay. And the bearings feel like gravel again so it's being sent back AGAIN. Not what I'd expect for the money!

Bottom Line:I bought these hubs (in the wheelset) because I they seemed the best, durable, low maintenance hubs available to me. Then I heard about the problems people have had and got worried, but so far I've had no problems. I'm not big (155 lbs) or hard on a bike (the only part I used to go through is headsets (before Chris King)) and the riding this year has been dry, but I've had no problems with these hubs. I'm an above average mechanic and if there's a problem on my bike I'll check it out. I haven't done a thing yet. I think/hope it will stay that way. If these hold up, they get 5 chilis for value, too.

Bike Setup:Uzzi DH, Jr T 2001, XTR driveline, 8" hayes front and rear, 2.7 intense rubber, run single wide rims, gripshift attack shifters.
Bottom Line:Hubs are strong and light. At first i was skeptical of how strong they'd be cause they're so damn light, but after 8 months of using them they're still working perfectly - and i ride pretty hard. Last weekend i plowed over some rocks on the downhill that popped the innertube on impact, loosened spokes and the hubs are still perfectly straight!

They're pretty quiet when you first install them (almost silent freewheel action), but after 8 months i decided it was time for a rebuild. It took a flathead screwdriver and about 10 minutes to do it, was so freakin easy i cant believe it!

Someone else on this posting said something about the strength of the disc bosses and not being sure how strong they are. I had the same worries when i first bought them, but it stops my 36 pound bike with 8" rotors just perfectly.

All in all, i give the hubs 5 chillis on the overall, but 4 on the value, since they cost so much.

Bottom Line:These are great light disc hubs. They seem to be reliable. I got a wheel set with DT revolution spokes and Mavic 317's with the hubs for about $310 in Germany where I live. The bummer is the price every where else is in world is nuts. They are much quieter than the old hugi's. It's really wet and muddy here all the time, they seem to be keeping out the grime.

Strengths:strng, and true, always. i haent had a major overhaul on it since the day i bought it. it works good in mud, snow, water, dust, EVERYWHERE! i really like it and suggest it w/ a hayes disc brake
Weaknesses:none i know of
Bike Setup:i ride a '99 trek y3. it is a different frame design than others. i cracked my old one and i was sent a new frame design. it looks like a Gary Fisher. it has RST delta hl forks ( my rst hi-5's were recalled) and XTR components everywhere else. i run a hayes hydraulic disc brake in the front and it is almost hassle free. i race DH, DS and XC on it and i have to pedal the beast everywhere. it has good rims, sun mammoths front and rear which i like cus they are real strong and affordable. I can sat the hub works good for me when i ride uphill or downhill, although it is a bit heavy.
Bottom Line:if your looking for a good affordable front disc hub, buy this one. it nevers needs to be cleaned and is strong.

Weaknesses:It would be great if they were cheaper. Functionally, I have found no weaknesses
Similar Products Used:Coda disc whhelset ( please don't set me off about those )Rond disc hubs ( my blood pressure is rising )
Bike Setup:Cannondale F900 Disc ( the frame rocks, the bits were cr*p )
Bottom Line:I hate maintenance and I hate components that wear out too quickly. In the UK we have lots of bad weather which is quite hard on components. I have been unlucky with the previous wheels that I have bought, but the Hugi's have been faultless. After a few months of riding ( maybe 1000 off road miles, some in really bad conditions ) they feel as new. The bearings are still "tight" and smooth. The freewheel is fine. Basically I have had no problems. To me they seem like a quality bit of kit that should last.

I have still got a pair of the old Hugi hubs on my spare bike and those hubs have been all round the world, approx 15,000 miles I would think. I have NEVER touched them and they are fine, as new.

If the freewheel on these new hubs explodes, I will make a post.
