Risse Terminator Rear Shock

4.4/5 (5 Reviews)
MSRP : $350.00

Product Description

The Terminator Damper features external rebound and compression damping adjustments. The adjustments are quite subtle, allowing you to fine tune the suspension for any type of terrain. With complete adjustability, you can match the rear suspension characteristics to your front.

Strengths:    Ease of install and adjustment,Light weight, multiple adjustment options, silent, customer service was excellent.

Weaknesses:    Wrong top spacer sent from Risse and had to grind it to fit which which ended up being no problem.

Bottom Line:
I use my bike to commute to work and the combo of the seemingly indestructible (I weigh 210 Lbs)K2 Proflex 3000 with the Marzocchi front and Risse Terminator rear, allows me full adjustability from a "no bounce, hardtail-like" commuter bike that is efficient on the dirt and paved roads I take to work, to a full suspension Mtn bike that can handle the gnarliest of trails at Kingdom trails in Burke, VT. I was going to buy a new Mtn bike when my rear NR-2 blew, but decided to upgrade because the frame and compo group were fine. Ditched the Noleen ELT front and Nr-2 rear and I now feel like I got two bikes for the price of a front and rear shock. Commuter bike to Mtn bike in 5 min and I saved $1500.........and with current gas prices that's significant! Awesome product Risse.........Thank You........You guys ROCK!

Strengths:    *Light Weight
*Adjustability

Weaknesses:    *Lack of Speed Sensitive Damping
*Makes noises at the end of compression and the "end" of rebound due to ball bearings used inside for the adjustment.

Bottom Line:
Bought my frameset from Colorado Cyclist in 1999. Was not impressed with the Rock Shox Deluxe lack of adjustability and poorly set rebound damping from the factory (way too fast for my riding style and weight - 165lbs). So, I called up Risse and ordered up a Terminator. Risse did not include proper washer to fit my top-tube shock mount, so I bought some Delrin washers from a local store- that problem was solved. After several years of use, I can say that I am impressed with the durability of this product. Hasn't loss any air since I set it. After my initial couple of rides I tried to pinpoint a "metalic" type noise which almost sounded like my rear derailleur hitting my chainstay during descents. Finally, located the noise after disassembling the shock and finding ball bearings that Risse uses inside the adjusters for rebound and compression. These bearings prevent oil from going "backwards" throught the adjustment orfices. The noise comes from the bearings "settling" back into their position after each compression and each rebound. I actually removed these for an entire season because the noise was so annoying. I am searching local bearing suppliers for a "delrin" or other plastic version of the bearing to eliminate the metal-on-metal tapping noises. Other than this issue, the only other complaint is that the technology is rather old. The damping does not use any type of shim stack, so therefore it is not speed sensitive in nature.

Strengths:    Adjustability, weight over stock, performance over stock

Weaknesses:    needs to come with better instructions, no lock out, the valve adaptor didn't prevent loss of air as promised

Bottom Line:
Great upgrade from stock. I've never tried anything else, so I can't compare like products, but this was well worth the money. I chose to upgrade because the stock shock with no adjustable rebound damping would rocket me out of the saddle over bumps. Even going to a smaller spring didn't help. Now, the rear wheel stays planted over any terrain, and I'm getting used to remaining seated even more than usual. The adjustments are great - I dialed it in the way I like it after a few rides, and now I can just forget about it. Adding air pressure for my weight was a piece of cake, but the valve adaptor that they sold me doesn't really keep air from escaping. Also the freedom plate adaptor should fit into the swingarm instead of just up against it, for a more secure connection. Now, the only lateral support is from the bolt connecting the shock and swingarm, and friction. Who knows how this will hold up over time, but for now, I am very optimistic. The folks at Risse make a fine product, and I had the shock 3 days after ordering, via USPS priority mail for no extra charge. Four chilis all around because there are still some features that I'd like to see - a lockout, and a better freedom plate, and it's overall quality. Who knows - I may upgrade the overall rating after a year or so.

Weaknesses:
slight top-out noise
too heavy damping

Bottom Line:
Ordered this show from the Bike Company (cool mail order place)and was sent a shock that did not fit my new frame. I called Bike company and they said to try Risse direct. I spoke to Steve (?)who is the head guy and he said to sent in my old one so that he could make me one custom! Three days later I received a custom made Risse shock that fit perfectly into my new frame! I am very pleased with the performance. Both compression and rebound are a little overo-damped, but still very active for the most part. I might send it back to be revalved, but it works well regardless. The shock has not lost a pound of air in about three months!!! I'm sold on the company and the product.
