Hi I have this on my cannondale perp , it has 3 staged travel I don't know if it comes like this from the warehouse or cannondale had it customized , anyway I added a hard ish ti spring and its been great , first of all when you get on the bike it sinks that's the first supple stage for small bump sensitivity then when your pedaling there hardly any bob that's the 2nd stage for pedalling , but the best is the hard hitting smooth as butter 3rd stage , love it I do think you can go overboard these days fettling and turning bits of metal hoping something somewhere is working , my advice is go simple and go fast

Really cool shock it can take on anything.

Smoothness. stroke control, sensitivity, price, durability, weight (its lighter than fox's top of the line dh shock the marzocchi and the rockshox equivelents) tunability (if you get it done while serviced you can get it to feel however you want)

maybe lack of adjustments but i suppose you cant have it all with a "budget" shock

well the fox products woop the ass off anything else ive used but to be honest there isnt much difference between the van r and the dhx 4 in terms of performance obviously the dhx gains some adjustments but beyond that i cant really see where the extra cash goes.

now i am well aware that the fox is probbaly the most expensive brand to run the van r costs £117 to have serviced at mojo but trust me the gains on the trail are well worth it. even the van is better controlled through the stroke than the top end rockshox 5.1 shock. the fox unit feels sensitive and keeps the bike much more composed on the trail which means you have more confidence to hit a berm that much faster and it really helps the bike to dig in and grip hard

In all honesty i prefer the van.. it may be a cheaper shock but its lack of adjustments is in all honesty a strength as it means that while the dhx users are trying to find the right boost valve pressure youre smashing out another run and that is no exaduration... shocks these days take so long to set up and this can be done with a car park test and two runs where a rc4 takes more like two uplift days to get right

I cant praise this thing enough and if the adjustment lack is really that much of a problem for you..... fox have given is a low speed compression adjuster for 2012 either way..... YOU WIN!!!

For the price an extremely solid shock, which will not let you down. Shock takes all hits fairly well and provides good traction. A single knob to adjust rebound seems to be enough for this shock, and if you are the type of guy who just wants
to party on the trails for a weekend and not do any races it's practically perfect.
You can get this shocked used for an astounding price as well.

graet for downhill i hit 6ft+ drops with it and is not even close to bottoming out

a simple shock

A simple shock. It works good for me , as i'm not an extreem rider.

Rebound adjustment.

Lots of things

first off, it clicks when on small bumps.
only one adjustment which is rebound and has the classic fox patant rubbish rebound which is either too fast or too slow.

Set up for my weight and is still unbelievably bad.
hardly any small bump performance, then it just bottoms on small or med jumps very harshly.

leaks oil as well.

It's an alright shock for the money.

I would grade it as a spare part for your bike if you break your main rear shock or it needs servicing.

can handle anything you throw at it and is very versatile.

will occasionally squeak if used in wet conditions. spring may not be big enough depending on size (i use a 600lb spring, and i can compress it all the way)

This shock is sick. I am an intermediate rider. I took this shock off 3-4 foot drops and it felt like a cloud. I recently went off a 7-8 footer and it was awesome. No noise, or trouble at all. This can definitely be used for cross country and straight trail riding. It so so versatile. Besides the two settings (bouncy and slow compression) you can adjust it somewhere in the middle. This is good for large jumps so you dont get bucked off your bike on the landing. I love this shock.

Solid compression feel. No "air" to leak out. Never have to pump it up.

External resevoir gets in the way of my Specialized Enduro frame. Had to turn it upside down.

I replaced the OEM Float R with this and I am very glad I did. Weighs a bit more, but I wanted to build up my ride to be a light (not lightweight) freeride (5" travel)/ heavy enduro. Very happy with the selection. Don't have to hassle with checking air pressure everytime I ride. I weigh in at 190lb (200 geared up) and this has made for a way more solid platform.
