Submitted by CL a Cross Country Rider from S. Cal.
Date Reviewed: June 30, 2004
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $10.00
Purchased At:ebay
Strengths:Exotic scenes, entertaining.
Weaknesses:Most rides last no longer than 5 second followed by a crash. No continuous action on trail. Too many experimental video tricks.
Similar Products Used:NSE 2, much better.
Bottom Line:I hate the camera man who made the longest ride in this video upside down through a foggy forest, it would have been a nine clip if only he set the camera upright! Stupid stuffs like that kill the film. Also there are way too many crashes, big and small ones happened every 5 second, you won't be able to see any continuous ride without a quick interruption.
It's more of a MTV entertaining video than a mountain bike inspiration film. North Shore Extreme 2 is much much better.

Weaknesses:it's all good

Bike Setup:Giant AC1
Bottom Line:It's interesting to watch the riders crash while trying to descend little bumps that nowadays they just launch off of. The crashes bring back memories. The fashions, the bikes. Get it to see where it all began.

Date Reviewed: May 27, 1999
Favorite Trail:
The Oaks
Duration Product Used:
less than 1 month
Strengths:
Footage of the sort of trails that I wish I could ride ( but can't because I'm on the wrong side of the Pacific and would probably kill myself if I tried at the moment.
Weaknesses:
Camera work isn't professional, but it'd be a bit hard to get broadcast quality hardware & film crews into the spots where these guys were, now wouldn't it?
Similar Products Used:
NSX II
Chainsmoke
Bottom Line:Okay, I've got to ask, East Coast and Pete, just where do YOU ride. I do worse trails than most people I know, and I've trashed myself & my Proflex on rides that weren't a patch on the North Shore trails. Yeah people kept falling off (INCLUDING WADE SIMMONS EC), but are you good enough to do those trails without a stack? I know I'm not. Great footage of people doing what I'd love to. (BTW, to those riders, I hate you, nothing personal, just plain old jealousy) Well worth getting, even if you have to track it down from the other side of the world like I did, not too difficult really, just get onto Mitch at KOTS (follow the link) and he'll get it sorted out for you damn quick.

Bottom Line:

So, whats up with the hand held camera?
It's non stop shaking of the camera I can barely watch the video without getting motion sickness.
I could also play better music in my garage with my buddies and casio keyboard from k-mart.
Too many falls and not enough big air!!
Too many inexperienced riders not enough hard cores like Wade Simmons and Cory Leclerc.
Time to ditch the 15 year olds

Date Reviewed: January 24, 1999
Bottom Line:

The North Shore is some of the best, scariest, most technically challenging terrain in the world. The riders of the shore have learned to ride thier bikes in ways most people would could not comprehend. I am fourtunate enough to ride most of the trails and with most of the riders you see in both NSX & NSX2, and even though the videos are rockin', they still don't show just how steep, or how tall that wheelie drop really is when you right their! Digger we all owe you one, you da man!!!

Bottom Line:

This movie is rippin, it's got the craziest, knarliest, most hardcore raw footage that can been seen anywhere. The trails are sick the riders are sicker and the producer put it together in style that will send shivers down your spine. You get to see big crashes, insane lines and huge air, theres even a crazy guy on a unicycle. If you wana see real riders tackle the most hardcore terrain and ride it with style buy this flick.

Bottom Line:

NSX II is the best mountain biking video i've ever seen! The terrain is amazing and the camera angles put you right there in the action. The riders are truly amazing and the video doesn't try to hide the pain and punishment these people endure to learn their moves. My favorite parts are the footage of Dangerous Dan and that incredible unicycle rider. I thought the footage of Richey Schley was kinda weak by comparison. His high-speed style just doesn't film as well as some of the super-slow, super-technical stuff. Towards the end, I felt that they ran out of the really great footage and filled the space with the merely very good. I'm still giving it 5 chilis, though.

Bottom Line:

NSX II -> Awesome video. The trails and the riders on the 'shore are truly amazing. I got to ride some the 'shore this summer and was humbled very quickly (but I had alot fun!). The vid is better than the first one because of the camera angles (either up close to get an idea of how hard the ride is or some great panoramic views to get an idea to the surroundings) and more of a focus on the riding aspect (rather than the wipe outs).

Ohh Man, just finished watching NSX 2, and have to say it was crrazzzy. Better than the first (but still needs some new tunes. Shows what mountain biking is all about on the west coast. we were all glad to see a vid with some riding not like Kranked, sandboxes are for preschoolers!

man, just wait till the new one comes out!! it supposed to have alot less bails in it, although i found those rather entertaining, and even bigger stuff, as far as i know, there's no place that would make the north shore look like disney land, and if there is , dammit, why isn't there a video of it , that would rock, in fact any thing close to the north shore would rock!!!!!!1

Bottom Line:

After reading all the reviews below I decided to buy the video. What a disappointment. I liked the trails which were pretty radical, but unless you like watching a bunch of bikers falling in almost every shot, I would not suggest buying it. Shit, if that is what people are spending there hard earned money on, I'll take my camera to Plattekill, NY and make North Shore look like Disneyland with a lot less falling. I'll give it 2 stars for effort.

This video is awesome. It shows real mountain biking compared to chain smoke.
I can't wait to go up to canada and try out some of the trails. where I live I have to ride 16 miles on road to get into a forest. The only thing I don't like about the video is lack of variety, its the same trails the whole time. I have to give it a five though for the awsome riding.

Bottom Line:

The bottom line is this Video is great entertainment. You can't compare it with Cranked because they were done totally differently by different people. The North Shore is a hardcore place to ride no doubt but it is often very difficult to capture the extremeness of the riding. This is why NSX is such agood video. NSX 2 which will feature even more gnarly rides and crashes will be out soon so be prepared. Digger has all the great footage of all the great trails of The Shore GMG, The Reaper, A Walk In the Clouds, The Fleshy Wound, Ladies, Skull, Pink Starfish, Boundry, and just recently The Circus. It's going to be crazy!!

Bottom Line:

Just picked this video up at Cove bike shop in Deep Cove, BC. Read the article in BIKE magazine about the Northshore and even tried some of the trails up there. This type of riding is so far above anything in the states. Downhill trials by fear is an accuarate description. What these guys are doing is just beyond typical 'core' riding. These shore riders are the core of core, period. It looks like easy drops, wheelie off's, balancy stuff, but when you're at the top of a five to six foot rock face, it's much more than 'easy'. Yeah, the video is 'home-grown', but that just adds to the flavor. Unlike Kranked, you really can't get bored with watching what they guys, and Grrrls, can do. Angie Ho takes a few good blasts into trees, but so does everyone else. THe shots of nighttime snow riding are just incredible. It's a really fun video, beats Kranked.

Date Reviewed: June 16, 1998
Bottom Line:

This is a definitely a unique, grassroots video. All the action is filmed on real trails, under the forest canopy. So, the one comment comparing production quality of NSX to KRANKED is way off base. Kranked, and many other video's, are done in the open, in proper lighting, often staged and set just for the camera. They're cool. But if you compare the actual North Shore trail footage of Cranked to NSX, you'll appreciate just how good NSX is technically. Its in your face, up close riding. Maybe George Lucas could do better...

Sweet video! I disagree with the other reviews saying that they did not like the
grassroots feel to the video. I think that is the best part - normal schmoos
riding hard (no corparate wearing riders who you would never see on the trails). Love the background groans and yelps. Awesome riders.

NSX is a pretty damn cool if you want solid shore but if you want just plain extreme, but done by pros, definatly go with Kranked. also check out a kick-ass shore site at www.angelfire.com/or/NorthShoreMTB. also dangerous dan's site is pretty damn cool, its link is from the NorthShoreMTB site, above, he gets alot of shots in NSX and also a few in Kranked. he also built a few of the hairiest, hardest trails on the shore.

NSX is a cool video. It shows all the knarly sruff that there is here on the North Shore. However, you can tell it is done by an amateur. The quality of the video is not as good as it could be. If you can't understand what I'm talking about buy Kranked and you'll see whata real video should be like.

Bottom Line:

I ordered one of these from LeeL over on the Passion forum when he made a one-time Christmas offer (don't try to get one from him now, the offer is dead). At that time I had no real concept of what the North Shore downhill trials trails were like. I had read Lee's and other's posts in the forums about crazy drop-offs and steeps, but I wasn't prepared for what I saw in the video. The NS riders are completely off their rockers! The trails are difficult to pick out as they generally ride (or should I say fall) down the rain forest detritus on insanely steep slopes full of mossy logs and rocks and trees. The structures they have built (ramps, see-saws, jumps and bridges) are ingenious and hair-raising. In one scene a guy starts from right next to the camera and slithers his way down a super-steep narrow slope until he's just a dot about one second later. The recent Bike magazine article (April issue) can give you some idea of what North Shore riding is about, but you have to see the NSX video to fully appreciate it. The disclaimer at the end is pretty hard to believe (to the effect of No riders or bicycles were seriously injured or damaged in the making of this film), since there are so many crashes and one potato-chip wheel and one snapped crankarm (that you get to see!). Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of succesful stunts, too, and some really amazing skills displayed. The production and editing of this video is also what makes it stand out. This is a grass-roots effort by Digger (who built many of the trails) and a bunch of amateur local riders who are just out having fun for the camera. This means home video camera and no sponsors or advertisements. All the music is by local Vancouver bands. Now I'm dying to go to the North Shore and test my skills, but also mortally afraid it would be the last trip I ever take.If you're like me and only own one mountain bike video, this is the one to have. Five flaming chilis.

Bottom Line:

Speedgoat in the previous review says it all. My riding buddies and I read all the US mtb rags (mostly because there isn't much Canadian stuff available) but we always get a good laugh when we read the how to sections like How to ride drop-offs and the photos show a tester going over a glorifed curb which is the only technical challenge around for miles. Here in the Wild North West you can't ride ANY of the real trails if you can't clean a 3 foot drop-off created by entwined roots in the middle of a hairpin between two trees 3 feet apart right after you've come down a 6ft long, 12in wide, 55 degree ramp (which is the only sane way off of a 5 foot diameter fallen tree lying across the hillside).Maybe that's why we don't have too much problems with land access issues because no mentally stable hiker or equestrian would care to share these trails with us.Anyways the video is an absolute must-have for any self-respecting mtn biker who values the mud they wallow in. It serves as a testament to the level of skill and sheer balls that all mtn bikers must aspire to. I have personally been on 75% of the trails (but probably only ridden about 50%) shown but cannot even begin to claim to have done it with the style and flair as the guys in the video.
Kudos to Digger for producing the video and I'd like to challenge the off-road shows (like Fat Traxx) to send some money Digger's way so that they can show what real technical mtn biking is all about (trials in the wilds). For more on the stuff we have up here in Crazy Canuck land check out the May issue of Bike. If you Americans plan to come up to try out the trails make sure you hitch up with a local (either through a local shop like On the Top, Deep Cove, Crank&Carvin, Ridge Bike and Board or by introducing yourselves to others you meet on the trail) so that you can be properly indoctrinated (proper bike setup, protective padding, when to de-bike if trail conditions are poor so as not to cause further damage, etc). Keep in mind that these trails are on mountains (they're more like hills to us since they're only 2 or 3 thousand feet high) and you have to do a bit of climbing to get to them.

Yay, something I get to review without causing all kinds of static because it's something we sell and are trying to advertise. But, hey Digger and co., if you North Shore guys are readings this, please, please go ahead and send Speedgoat Bicycles about a 20 copies and that'll at least take care of everybody who wants one locally here in the Pennsylvania forest. This video just plain dominates the earth. Every half-arse, Mountain Bike Suction reader/lycra model should be tired down and forced to watch this video until they understand the way the world should be. You B.C. folks are simply the most impressive riders in the whole world. I want to be a Canadian now (ask Graham--The Man--at RaceFace). And Francis, if you're reading this, you have to check this video out. Amazing.North Shore riders are my heroes, and this is some nicely shot footage of the most exciting, most spectacular riding in the world. One chili for every guardian angel hurt filming NSX:
