from Grande Cache, AB Date Reviewed: June 7, 2004 | | Duration Product Used: | More than 3 years | | Strengths: | Race coverage Product reviews Frequency of publication Concentrates on riders, not products | | Weaknesses: | Biased towards roadies Expensive for non-U.S. subscribers | | Similar Products Used: | It's the only game in town | | Bottom Line: | An interesting mag. As another reviewer said, how many "how-to" articles can you read before you hit the wall? VeloNess is cycling current events. Their product reviews are limited compared to the product oriented mags, but are generally logical and fair.
A little biased towards roadies, but that's where the money is these days. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Product reviews are well done. | | Weaknesses: | The editorial staff's bias against mountain bikers is obvious and annoying. From the lame O'Grady cartoons to the hot/not section, its clear the editors and writers at VeloNews have no respect for mountain bikers. | | Similar Products Used: | MBR, Dirt Rag, Procycling | | Bike Setup: | Irrelevant | | Bottom Line: | A good but not great magazine. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Just kinda really really techie-racer-boringish. Fine if you are a racer, but definetly not the mag to get newbies inspired to ride. Better when Mountain BIke, casue it doesnt have Zap. Hmmm, not much else to say, that should we 50 words. | Overall Rating: |

This is the number one bike magazine out there. I've been a subscriber for twenty four years since Barbara George published it in her kitchen in Brattleboro, Vt. It has since gone better and better. It gives me everything I need - race reports, both road and mtb from around the world, tech articles both physical and mechanical and real racers writing about their world. I can't imagine how it can be improved - all this and it comes 2x monthly in the summer !! I subscribe three years at a time so to get the cheapest rate. Waytago Velonews - you're the best and you deserve more burning hotdogs than five - you should be Hors Category !!! | Overall Rating: |

I am not even a roadie yet I love to read about what is going on in the pro peleton along with mountain biking. | Overall Rating: |

I wish it were cheaper. I wish I had enough time to read it cover to cover! If I could susbcribe to only one rag, this is def it! VN covers the entire spectrum of the cycling world and focuses on racing. Great writing, acceptable photos. Other mags may provide more dazzle or bike culture/fashion/trendiness, but VN gives the BIG PICTURE with detail. | Overall Rating: |

I started reading Velo when I first started racing. It is the best way to find out where and when the races in your area are happening. The also have the best race coverage of any magazine. I don't even ride a road bike but I still like to read about what is happening in the big tours as well as cyclocross and mountain biking. It is not glossy and it doesn't have much for product reviews but the race coverage and training tips are the best there is. If you are serious, this is the magazine for you. | Overall Rating: |

I like it. It's got a pretty neat layout and stuff, and you're not going to get it confused with another mag. It's got the best articles on all racing, even road biking, and I look forward to its arrival. Regarding the 'f' word: Oh, who cares? It pervades our society. It's on TV (south park), in movies, in computer games, and represented in many other media throughout our society. Sure, it'd be nice if they didn't have to say it, but it was a quote, so it's not as if they themselves used the term. All in all, like everyone else who's heard of this and read it (few, judging by the number of reviews) i really enjoys this thing. | Overall Rating: |

this magazine is awesome. It's got good reviews on races and products, and it's got stuff on Road bikes (road bike are sweet). Have you ever seen Tour the France, or tour D'italy! Those races aren't for pansy ass, unlike the riding crew off MBA. Anyway it's a good mag to buy. I prefer the product reviews I get here 'cause I know rider's actually test the stuff, ride hard and give their true feelings about the stuff (hey, it's their money they'r spending!) | Overall Rating: |

As of April '98, when my sub to MBA expires, VeloNews and Dirt Rag will become the only two cycling publications I receive. As a former editor of Mt. Bike (For the Ad Dollars), I was receiving a free lifetime subscription, but I called the Zapster a few issues back asking to be removed from the comp list because every issue just pissed me off a little more. I still get Dirt Rag (thankya kindly, Maurice). I don't need no nitwits telling me what to buy, or how to ride over logs, or why I'm uncool because I don't have any tattoos, earrings, ubangi lips, or goatee, and I've already got my freeride, (it was free, and I ride the hell out of it -- Merlin, the besta bika, to paraphrase Mario C. -- thanx Merlin, I owe ya one). I'll be nenewing my sub to VeloNews, despite its penchant for printing four-letter words uttered by Mr. Palmer, and despite Mr. O'Grady's unreasonable fear and loathing of rattlesnakes, but will subtract one chili for those transgressions. Go VeloNews. | Overall Rating: |

I note with disgust that VeloNews, which I always considered the New York Times of competitive cycling, is now printing the f word in all its four-lettered glory, when quoting someone who uses the word during an interview. I use the word myself at times, so I'm not personally offended, but I sure feel sorry for the many readers of this otherwise fine publication who do not, or who do not want their children/parents/whatever exposed to it. When I raced, I used to load my mother my copy so she could see what all the excitement was about. I imagine the editor's answer would be that printing the word accurately portrays the speaker -- I've seen the word from the mouth of Mr. Shaun Palmer, and Ms. Missy Giove. Perhaps the Velonews editor should return to Journalism school, if he ever went, to learn of other, more socially acceptable ways of conveying what was said, such as expletive deleted (ala Richard M. Nixon), or even F---. I wonder if John Wilcockson's mother, if she lives, reads and enjoys such lowbrow journalism from her son's publication. If you agree, please send a note to VeloNews and let them know. Thank you. | Overall Rating: |
