Price Paid: $70.00
Strengths:Good traction in mud. Great for climbing those "impossible" hills.
Weaknesses:Vibrations
Similar Products Used:Michelin Jet, Richley Speedmax
Bike Setup:Marvil Fury full Shimano XTR 2003, V brakes
Bottom Line:I really find these tires to be great in mud and going up those almost impossible climbs. Some vibrations on hard ground and on the road.

Great value for the money.

Submitted by Bryan a Weekend Warrior from Newport, KY USA
Date Reviewed: October 21, 2002
Favorite Trail:Cooper's Rock (West Virginia)
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Purchased At:Came with bike
Strengths:Low-ish rolling resistance. Light weight. Great durability. Cool looking...BUT...
Weaknesses:The front MoFo is a hazard!!! It washes out with NO warning whatsoever. Terrible performance in anything not absolutely dry.
Similar Products Used:Panaracer Smoke/Dart, Specialized Team Control, ancient "Farmer Johns" (why can't they bring back tires like that???)
Bike Setup:Rocky Mtn. Fusion, stock except for RockShox Judy Race, WTB dual-compound trail grips, WTB Laser V Stealth Saddle, SPD 536 pedals.
Bottom Line:How a bike manufacturer who hails from the slime of western Canada ever spec'd these on one of their bikes is beyond me. Wet performance absolutely stinks. What's more, the front tire gives you ZERO warning before it washes out. So you'll be zipping along fast singletrack one minute and sliding down the hill on your back the next.

To be fair, this isn't a terrible tire in dry, hardback conditions, especially the rear tire. But even in the dry, I have to be really careful with the front tire getting sketchy on switchbacks.

The tire is very durable, though. In a year of tough riding on rocks and roots, not one pinch flat. Pretty amazing.

Where this tire excels is for the rider who rides the occasional horse trail or fire road but spends most of his/her time on pavement. I cycle commute to work twice a week and the tread still looks brand new.

But please, don't rely on these for anything resembling "real" mountain biking. You'll just wind up with a lot of bruises.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $20.00
Purchased At:Cycle Path
Strengths:price, good traction, look good too
Weaknesses:none so far
Bike Setup:Kona Fire mountain stock other then tires
Bottom Line:I've only had the tires for about three weks, but they have not failed me yet in any terrain. I'e tried them in 5 inches of mud, good traction, tired them on dry single track, good traction, even cornering was good

Date Reviewed: April 10, 2002
Favorite Trail:They are all good
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $28.00
Purchased At:The Bike Doctor
Strengths:Durable (See weaknesses)
Weaknesses:This tire has such a hard compound it is not capable of gripping any surface.
Similar Products Used:Bontrager Jones XC, Velociraptors, IRC Revolt
Bike Setup:Trek 8000, SID SL, Rolf wheels, Easton carbon bar, Bontrager Racelite Saddle, Full XT drivetrain, XTR rear
Bottom Line:I selected this tire for muddy race conditions. That was my first mistake. The tires accumulate a large ammount of mud and debris very quickly in wet conditions and lack shedding capability. Mistake number 2 was realized when I decided to try the tires on hardpack, dry conditions. The front tire washes out at random. As you can all imagine that is a bad thing while going down a hill at a high rate of speed. In closing I would like to ask one question....What, specifically did Maxxis design this tire for? It has failed in two of the most basic areas of mt. bike tire performance. Save the cash and buy something else.

Date Reviewed: March 7, 2002
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $50.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:looks nice, lasts long, good gription on hardpack and has that killer name
Weaknesses:These tires will make you lose your confidence when cornering. I tend to use the breaks way more now in the corners because these babies will lose their grip and slide
Similar Products Used:Bontrager Revolts, Bontrager Jones, Panaracer
Bike Setup:XT, Rocky Mountain, Marzocchi,RaceFace
Bottom Line:Sort of expensive, don't be lured in to by the sweets looks, these are evil. They are good for xc hardpack stuff but not good for me. They came with the bike so what can you do.

p.s. watch the loose corners!

Submitted by DCS a Cross Country Rider from New York
Date Reviewed: January 7, 2002
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Long wearing
Weaknesses:Poor cornering, middling to poor traction, vibration
Bottom Line:Don't buy this tire. My Continental Goliath semi-slicks are better off-road than these. These tires will wash out unexpectedly in cornering, especially where the ground is a little soft or sandy. Terrible grip on rock and roots as well. Definitely not an East Coast tire.

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $25.00

Strengths:Hard compound, does not wear easily, good gripping on wet slip & muddy surface.
Weaknesses:Threading side CRACK easily after i used it for 3 mths.
Similar Products Used:Michellin wildgripper comp s 1.95" & WTB velociraptor 2.1"
Bike Setup:GIANT ATX 890, sid 100, XT/XTR
Bottom Line:As compare to this tire with michellin, it do not last long due to the CRACK beside the threading so please don't buy this model of this tire. You may regret buying this tire can last for 3-6 mths.

Favorite Trail:long ones
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $22.00
Purchased At:Jenson USA
Strengths:Look good, seems durable, price (both). Handle reasonibly well in mud, good climbing traction.
Weaknesses:Front and rear corner terribly
Similar Products Used:the old PychoTTs, Bonty Revolt SuperX
Bike Setup:Mantra Comp, the usual good stuff
Bottom Line:Bought em on close out seeking a good deal. Both front and rear corner terribly. My Bonty Revolt SuperX semi-slicks corner better than these things and offer a much smoother ride. Stiff tire compound and knobbies gave off so much vibration that I would feel pain in my wrists afterwards. Contrary to some reviews here, they have handle well a few times in mud. Took them off and much happier now. A few people have commented these are more suitable to west coast riding (I am on the east),a and if you want them cheap let me know, maybe 650 miles on 'em.

Favorite Trail:wherever
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $10.00
Purchased At:jenson
Strengths:This tire is 100% great when it's dry and packed.
Weaknesses:90% of my riding is not dry and packed.
Similar Products Used:Mythos, Notos, Pana Smoke/Dart, Ritchey
Bike Setup:Catamount MFS
Bottom Line:Like i said, great tires on dry hardpack, but this is the east coast... so they are not cutting it. I thought that these tires would be fairly aggressive, being a sized down version of the Mofo downhill/freeride tire. My first few rides were OK, but when the trail is loose and crumbly, the front has a tendency to wash out early (not good). The back hooks up well for climbing, until it hits a root or rock, or anything not hard dirt. I took a 3 mph spill on wet rock that I just never saw coming. My 2.1 Notos actually hooked up better in the rear.
With all that being said, I guess that they are light, and they were cheap, so that's working for them.

Favorite Trail:Timberlake (Eglin Reservation)
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $22.00
Purchased At:mail order
Strengths:Moderately low rolling resistance.
Corners well
Good in the soft stuff
Weaknesses:Climbing can be problematic
Gripping on roots is poor
Wet traction is not great
Similar Products Used:Panaracer Duster II
Bike Setup:Gary Fisher HOO KOO E KOO
Bottom Line:This tire is a great tire for my use: trail riding with some soft sand spots and limited climbing. Cornering is great in soft stuff but not wet stuff. Durability seems to be holding up well. I used IRC Pirhana Pros before this and they were better climbers and better at speed but the MOFO overtakes it on all else.

Weaknesses:None yet.....
Similar Products Used:None yet...
Bike Setup:GIANT ATX 840, Alivio drivetrain, XT control, XT Hub and weinmann zac rim.
Bottom Line:Pretty good tire. Is much more lighter than the other tire. And the tire tread was well design so nothing to say but this tire is cost a reasonable quite. Do try it.

Favorite Trail:oxford and yellow river
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Sheds mud good and great on new trails. They also have low rolling resistance for nobbies. Corner well as long as there isn't sand in the corner "ha ha."
Weaknesses:Not as fast as semi-slicks but then again there not intended for "get on, sit down, shut up, and hang on speed." Wish they gripped better on hard packed up-hill climbs.
Similar Products Used:Michelin WG, Specialized team edition, IRC Mythos, Kenda Kozmik Lites, WTB, Bontrager revolt
Bike Setup:Schwinn Homegrown hard tail, XTR drive train,Chris King head set and hubs, SDG saddle, Marzocchi Bomber fork, Race Face ti bottom bracket, Mavic 517 rims and thats all I have to say about that.
Bottom Line:The bottom line is what ever the tire you buy is intended for, use it for that purpose. These happen to be all around cross country racing tires. Give them a try. For the price you just about can't beat them.

Strengths:very predictable ride, climbs decently (not super steep though), excellent cornering traction. looks good
Weaknesses:Rear tire slips a bit on steep climbs.
Similar Products Used:Irc Mythos
Bottom Line:Good tire, reasonably light with decent rolling resistance. Fun for all conditions. Corners very well, and provides a nice feel to the ride if used with lower air pressure. Rear tire slips on steep climbs, though, which is a pain sometimes. 5 stars for the front, 4 for the rear...hmmmm. ill round it to 5 though! great rubbers!

Bottom Line:Really nice upgrade from my previous tires. A good solif, predictable tire, well suited to my kind of riding...an intermediate skill level on intermediate to advanced trails. Tread grips everything from mud to loose and medium soiil really nicely. Solid steering contril in sand and gravel as well. Got 'em for $20 each (half list price) from Performance. Based on the price and performance, I gotta give em five chilis.
