Bottom Line:
Tired of those front end washouts that you get with your slick and semi-slick tires, then try a Maxxis Incisor. Had a Continental Double Fighter Dual on the front, big mistake, rolls fast but the side knobs are weak and the tire washed out easily. Moved it to the rear and tried a Trek Invert (the tire they use on Police Bikes around here) and that was a bigger mistake, washed out quicker and when traversing soft terrain is easily sank in up to the rim (it has 2.0 on the sidewall but it measured out at 1.7). After trying Tioga's, IRC's and Specialized tires, the Maxxis Incisor gave me the best street/trail performance. The side knobs are substantial and the hook up well when the front starts to slide. The centerline of the tread is an offset cross-bar design that provides better traction than a slick or semi-slick, but still has a low rolling resistance and a smooth ride because a bar is always in contact with the ground. It is a little heavy, but it is a true 2.1, I measured it. It floats nicely over soft terrain, even with my 220 pounds on board. It will clog in mud, but it performs well in dry conditions. Got mine for under $20 at Bike Nashbar.
3 chilis for performance, 1 chili for price.
Overall Rating:4
