$30.00 | | Purchased At: | Supergo | | Strengths: | Price, light weight, low rolling reistance | | Weaknesses: | lack of bite from rear tire in mud or gravel | | Similar Products Used: | Trek Kahuna, Jones, Psycho | | Bike Setup: | Trek 8900 | | Bottom Line: | A great tire for hard pack or sand, perfect for Sparta-Elroy, Luce Line and other crushed limestone trails. Not so good in loose gravel and even less in muck, although the front handles these situations better than rear. But what tire is perfect in all conditions? I think the tire perfoms as advetised, so give it the full 5 flamin' deer turds. I don't think Bontrager makes these anymore except as ST2 which have deeper treads. I would guess ST2 rear perform a little better in loose conditions. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$25.00 | | Purchased At: | supergo.com | | Strengths: | Low rolling resistance. Sticky rubber compound. Cheap! | | Weaknesses: | Washes out on the sandy stuff. Forget about riding on muddy surfaces (not a good idea anyway). The knobs on the rear tire don't last very long. | | Similar Products Used: | Panaracer Dart/Smoke. Ritchey Z-Max. Specialized Ground Control, Team Control, etc Controls. | | Bike Setup: | Merlin MTB w/ Shimano XT, Grip Shift and Marzocchi Z-5. | | Bottom Line: | These tires roll like a dream on clean, hardpack surfaces. The soft rubber compound sticks very well. However, they are not designed for serious, technical work on the trail as the treads are micro-knobs that don't grab very hard. The rear carcass is also very narrow and susceptible to pinch flats. Good compromise tires for riding a combination of pavement and not too serious dirt. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$25.00 | | Purchased At: | LBS | | Strengths: | Roll EXTREMELY FAST!! Corner great, lightweight and look great. Oh yeah, the roll fast too..... | | Weaknesses: | Not for the novice rider!! Get sketchy on loose gravel (as you would expect with this type of tire!) not good in any type of wet type of conditions. Wear pretty fast. Not made for any real technical downhilling. | | Similar Products Used: | Bontrager Revolt, Specialized Team control/master, Tioga Psycho (ie; Piece of cr@p!!!) | | Bike Setup: | Manitou Mars1 Fork, Mavic 217 CD Ceramic SUP wheels, LX/XT Drivetrain, 7005 Aluminum Hardtail, straight bars with shorty barends. | | Bottom Line: | These tires are amazing when used for they are intended for!! These are NOT FOR THE WEAK!!!! They work fantastic on the hardpack and dry conditions. They hook up great in the turns and climb great. They roll extremely fast and make pedaling on all surfaces much easier. It feels like I am in a lower gear when I ride these tires. Once they start to wear they lose their bite. These tires tend to break loose under braking on the downhills. The back end of the bike will slide if you don't watch what you are doing. I really like the tires but I think that would rather have a tire with a bit more nob on them. Again it is my fault though, these are XC RACING TIRES and not your everyday trail cruisers. NOTE: IF YOU WANT TO BEAT YOUR FRIENDS ON A DRY COURSE....BUY THESE TIRES!! I'll give 'em four flaming turdballs for value and a mighty 5 flaming turdballs overall!! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$25.00 | | Purchased At: | Supergo.com | | Strengths: | Low rolling resistance, good on hardpack/loose over hardpack, overall fast tire that can handle more than hardpack. | | Weaknesses: | A little buzz from the rear tire on pavement, I would have liked a little taller knobs on the rear tire. | | Similar Products Used: | Tons of tires...Michelin Lite, Geax Sedona, Specialized Storm Control and Dirt Control, WTB Racing raptor...tons more | | Bike Setup: | Gary Fisher hardtail with Bontrager wheelset. | | Bottom Line: | I recently put these on and used them on a trail with several different conditions. They did everything like I expected them to, but cornered very well. The side knobs are great! In mud, the knobs are too short to clog with most types of mud. The short knobs, however make it hard to climb out of the saddle on anything steep/loose. This is no big deal for me since I climb in the saddle, but it's something to think about. They are light, too and if you're currently using tires that are 600-700 grams, you'll notice these accelerate easier and in almost all conditions, they're faster than any knobby (even a lighter knobby, like the Panaracer Fire XC Pro 1.8) because the low rolling resistance. They also seem relatively pinch resistant for a racy tire, since I'm 120 pounds and ran about 30-35psi over some rough stuff. I'm sure a 175 pound rider would have no problem running a little over 40psi with them, especially with regular tubes.
By the way, when mounted and inflated on my Bontrager rims, the rear tire tread width was about 1.7 inches, with the casing a couple mm. skinnier. The front knob tread width was about 1.9, again, with the casing a little skinnier. This was good for me, since I was in the market for skinnier racing tires anyway, and it adds to their mud clearance.
I'll post back when I have more experience on them, but for now I'll give them a 5 value rating (I bought at Supergo for $25) and 4 overall (not gonna say they are the final word in tires until I race them a little). | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$25.00 | | Purchased At: | Supergo | | Strengths: | very light, rolls fast, handles most surfaces well | | Weaknesses: | thin sidewalls, must keep air pressure very high to prevent pinch flats | | Similar Products Used: | velociraptors, specialized team ground controls, panaracers darts, smokes, dusters. | | Bike Setup: | specialized groundcontrol AIM, x-vert, Stratos Helix Expert, xt and lx components. | | Bottom Line: | I used these tires for the first time at Snoeshoe Mountain in WV. It was very muddy with alot of rocks and roots. I thought I was going to kill myself with these tires, but they actually did very well. The rear tire is narrow and cuts through the mud, getting very good traction, even getting grip on wet roots that my velociraptors would have spun on. The next day I raced the Wild 100k Race which turned out to be about 80 miles of some very rough and muddy terrain, and these tires did not let me down. They roll so well, and I was able to use larger gears than normal. Overall, I think these tires were a very good choice, took over 1/2 pound off my bike and made it faster. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$30.00 | | Purchased At: | supergo | | Strengths: | Light, high quality casing, fast rolling, very good traction on firm smooth terain. | | Weaknesses: | Not the best in wet, muddy conditions. Kind of thin, not too good for really rocky bumpy stuff. | | Similar Products Used: | Paanaracer dusters, tioga psycho's, michelin wild gripper | | Bike Setup: | single speed | | Bottom Line: | This are quite good tires. They work really well on hardpack and mildly loose soil that's still kind of firm. In really greasy stuff they take a lot of finesse, have to be pretty careful. I've had them out in the mud on rocky rooty trails and it's definately do-able but they sure aren't made for that stuff. Also, they say it's a 2.1 front and 1.95 rear, but they look a lot smaller than that. The front looks like it MIGHT pass for 1.95 and the rear is skinnier than that. I sure like a chunkier tire with a lot more vollume for rocky rooty trails. I have a set on my single speed that I ride mostly around town and only occasionaly take it off road and they work super for that. If your trails are mostly smooth hardpack, they kick ass. I'm giving them 5 chili's because for what they're designed for they are top quality. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Briar Patch | | Duration Product Used: | 1 Year | | Strengths: | Fast, more grip than a semi-slick without feeling like something borrowed off Bubba's 4X4. Not bad in sand, work great in leaves and pine straw. | | Weaknesses: | Sketchy in loose gravel, wouldn't trust'em in serious terrain. | | Similar Products Used: | Velociraptors, Bontrager SS's, Onza Rip & Rails | | Bike Setup: | STP 200 | | Bottom Line: | Take a Velociraptor and shave it down to make it light and fast and you'll end up with something like this. The darts on the front tire stick down through leaves and pine needles to grip, and the front's also wide enough to give some float over sand. The back hooks up with the same sort of cog-railway action Velociraptors have, but less so because there's less (but faster) tread back there. I can't figure out why the edging blocks are lined up with the rear paddles, but they don't slilde out in turns too badly so that's OK too.
At $40 list, they're kind of expensive, but you can find'em cheaper if you dig around. Overall, a good compromise between a heavy knobby and a full-on racing tire. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Those tough little knobbles round the edge provide plenty of grip on corners and on packed dirt they really do save you a gear or two. I love 'em! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

This is probably not a good tire for those of you who push the envelope everywhere they go. They will wash on gravel. And will pick up mud, especially the front. And will tend to hold on to said mud for a while. (Just had to climb a hill today with a couple of extra pounds of mud, and did not loose it until I came bouncing back down.)For those of you who are like me, and use their bike for commuting and exercise, and who are lazy enough not to want to change tires to ride trails, these tires are a great mix. They don't roll as smooth as slicks, but they are TONS better on trails. Compared to full knobbies, ST's roll a lot better on pavement, but do not completely eliminate road noise. On just about everything else (exempting gravel) I have a hard time telling the difference between the ST and a knobbie.Don't buy these expecting knobbie performance. But if you want a tire that is good (not perfect) on 90% of the surfaces out there go with the ST'sThey do what I wanted them to do. Five flaming dead flamingos | Overall Rating: |

That is, unless you are very careful to spin circles, generally applying even pressure, and pick your spots. So climbing is problematic. As for braking they break loose very quickly It will be useless in the mud this winter but might be nice when the trails pack down again. My FP's were loosing knobs all around the side and to tell you the truth I didn't really notice it until I looked at the tires. they still rocked! First time out to tell you the truth I forgot about even having different tires on. I flew down a fast steep trail, lots of loose dirt and sand and some hardpack. Well I noticed then that I had new tires! Scared the hell out of me! Back end was all over the place and the front end , well---- Lets just say I used the brake a lot! I had trouble during climbs all day! Steep trails that I usually have a lot of fun on turned into a pain in the butt or legs! They just wouldn't grab at all. I gave up after that. After 5 more days of riding I turned the front tire around, that helped a little. next day I was turning off a road onto a trail and hit some gravel and washed the front tire out and down I went, Thanks Revolt! For the missing skin! I felt stupid! I just sat there wondering what happened. Even my buddy was like, I have no idea why you lost it. Well I went home and took off the back tire and put the Fire Pro I had on the front on the rear. It should last for a while. Took rear back and exchanged it for something else .Well If you are looking for a great all around tire, the Fire Pro has done it for me! The only thing that I have had to watch out for is hard stopping on hardpack dirt, tend to break loose like it was on wet pavement. But other than that, GREAT TIRE! I know this isn' tsupposed to be about Panaracer, but there was so much differance between the two. Just don't waste your money on the ST's, too much to put up with! | Overall Rating: |

They climb perfectly out of the saddle as well as in it, they roll without any noticable resistance, and they corner just as well as a full knobby tyre. However, they do take some adaptation as you must get them over onto the side knobs on corners. For this reason, they excell at high speed cornering--but are still perfectly satisfactory at lower speeds also. | Overall Rating: |

The ST does tend to be a little sketchy on off-camber corners and/or on slow technical turns. However, when cornering at speed, all the rider needs to do is get agressive and lean. The side knobs bite as well as any tire out there. Bottom line is the Revolts are FAST. If you're into going fast, and can ride aggressively, these are the tires for you. I have had the ST2 front and rear combo for about six months now. I am a 195 pound rider and have experienced a few pinch flats with the rear tire - an experience I find a bit unnerving since rims are not a cheap item to replace. The front tire can be a bit squirrely at times, as well. On the flip side, I absolutely love the low weight and speed of the tires and I predict that Keith will widen the rear tire and tweak the front tread pattern. Until then, I will give three chilis to a relatively new product with a hell of a future. | Overall Rating: |

Got some ST2s stock on my Klein Attitude Comp ('98). They are very fast and predictable on pavement, hardpack, and damp trails. They suck really bad on anything that is even remotely loose. I recommend these if you exclusively ride trails that are always damp or on slickrock, or maybe if you only use the rear tire. The front is no good for loose or even barely-loose trails. I'm going to try changing out my front for an IRC Mythos SXC 2.1.. I'll let ya know how it goes after I've had a chance to ride on it for a few weeks. | Overall Rating: |

I've been using these tires for the last year in every conceivable condition known to man and I can honestly say they rock! Sure you can buy better mud tires, or you can buy full slicks, but if you hate changing tires for all different conditions like I do these will pull you through just about anything you can ride. They're wearing quite well too, I put 1450 miles on them this year, which included 140 in Moab. The truth is I just bought a new pair about a week ago and went on a ride at Browns Camp, I was amazed at how much better they work when they're brand new. All in all I'd have to give them two thumbs up. | Overall Rating: |

I've run the ST2's for about a year and find them to be very versatile. It's obvious by looking at them they weren't designed for aggressive dh runs, but they're fine for almost anything but. The rear hooks up well and has little rolling resistance compared to a full knobby, and the front could use more bite, but I've been happy with their overall performance. The one problem I've encountered is more pinch flats on the rear (even with 60psi). Although I've been pleased w/the performance, I think I'll go back to the Jones full knobby in the front once I wear the ST2 out. I'll stick w/the rear unless the pinch flats keep coming. 4 chiles for the rear and 3 for the front. To sum it up, I'd say they're a good compromise between a pure slick and a full knobby. | Overall Rating: |

TREK may be the evil empire, but if their purchase of Bontrager helps put more of Keith's excellent products on the market...COOL. I'm a BIG guy compared to the typical cyclist, 5'11 195(Clydesdale) with BIG skier legs. I can DESTROY bikes and equipment. These tires came stock on my 98 8000, and I was more than a little hesitant about running them. I ride sportbikes(rolling endos at 80 mph) so saying I have a point n shoot riding style would be an understatement, not the person for this tire according to Bontrager. I am very happy to report that these tires have WAY exceeded my expectations and can report the following: -They definitely roll better than my knobbies(Mythos XC's) althoughI can't compare them to slicks(Death with my riding style) -Quite Light! Mine weighed in a 523/Rear and 533/Front(Larger Knobs) -These are AWESOME for Slickrock! Seem to be the perfect balance of slick and knobby. I can break most tires loose even in Moab, and aside from some minor tread squirm, they never broke even on the steepest portions of Slickrock -DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT BRAKING while turning in if your over 160lbs. I brake almost exclusively in a straight line, to do other wise with this tire is DEATH Smaller riders and you finesse guys might get away with it but not recommended SEE NEXT -TRACTION is black or white. There is NO grey area with this tire(ESPECIALLY the FRONT. If you manage to lose the front end, get ready to hit, because it isn't going to push then catch again. -All in all an excellent tire from the little company that I used to really dislike(Keith's a LOUDMOUTH,gifted, but still a loudmouth)Can't give it FIVE Flaming Turd though, I think it's a little narrow focus to have been specced as O.E. on so many bikes(I suppose that TREK's fault) A VERY DESERVING 4 Turds | Overall Rating: |

The Revolts are excellent tires if you don't expect them to behave like a full on knobby. I feel that all it tkaes is a little pravtice to get used to them, (like distributing your right). On moist, high speed descents the rear squirms unless you keep level (a very scary characteristic, but true off all not very knobby tires). i have been riding these tires for about 4.5 mos. now and have learned several things about 'em. 1)they are VERY good tires on strict hardpack,DRY roots and rocks, and not so technical stuff- except for the front tire! 2) for the love of god, NEVER,NEVER run the front tire on anything loose,(even loose dust), technical trails, or anything wet. While the rear tire can make it on a variety of surfaces, the front tire is squirrly(REALLY squirrly), but worse, in any turns above 10mph it gives you no warning before sliding like it was on ice. very very scary. I learned my lesson: anything but stict hardpack, keep the rear, ditch the front. overall pretty darn durable, Bontrager makes a good product. 4 piles of flaming dog crap until a better front tire can be made. | Overall Rating: |

I have the Revolt ST2's. They were original equipment on my new bike. These tires work very well. I've used them on fire roads, smooth single track, rocky/rooty/nasty single track, and the steeps (up and down). For me, the only type of terrain that they aren't super on is steep downhills, particularly those with a loose surface--the relatively short rear knobs tend to lock. You can get around it by careful use of the front brake. I'll give them five chilis since they work so much better than the last set of tires I used for an extended time (velociraptors). | Overall Rating: |

I recently purchased a set of the ST2's. I had been using Ritchey Z MAX front and rear for two seasons with very good results. This season I started to race quite a bit and wanted to try a tire with less rolling resistance while still providing adequate traction. Well, these tires definitely roll faster and are great for hardpack but the rear tire has worn very quickly leaves something to be desired while braking. If you check out Bontrager's web page, this braking habit is brought to our attention, along with some graphic aftermath pictures. Basically these tires perform exactly as the Bontrager ads suggest, they rail on hard singletrack, work pretty good in most places, but are fairly sketchy in the technical stuff. I hope that I will adapt to them a little better by riding them the rest of the season, but for now I still have a set of knobbies on standby. I'll give them a 4 because they perform as expected but the rear center knobs have worn a little too quickly. | Overall Rating: |

These tires came hooked up to my new bike that I bought about 6 months ago. They role real fast and I love the front tire. I think it's just the perfect size and corners well. The only problem I have is with the rear. The knobs are to small and traction is at a minimum. I ride on a lot of technical trails and a lot of times the rear would slip on a turn that's on a steep uphill. I kept the front tire on and replaced the rear with a 2.1 hutchison Ciyote. I just tried them out last night. I recently took my thicker knobs off (Ritchey ZMax front and Team Master on the back) as the ground around here is now more hard pack. I thought the front really cornered well with a good lean and speed. They certainly feel faster and accelerate better than the Team back tire. I would have liked to try a 1.7 on the back but it likely would have slipped more on the looser stuff out here. For mud, I still keep my other treads near by though. | Overall Rating: |

I totally washed out on a dock in Myrtle Beach goin around a turn with little dirt on it at about 10 mph, just imagine what it would do on 20 mph technical trails. This review is for the ST2’s. I have the SS Revolts and raced on them several times last year with some success when the course was suitable. I liked the SS so I bought the ST2’s because I wanted something faster then my full on knobies (Velocaraptor front/Conti Pro I rear). I installed the new tires and took them out for a get aquatinted ride. That ride coupled with several others leaves me with the following impressions: The tires roll well, somewhere in between the SS and full knobs. The tires shed mud horribly!!! If I wanted a slick I would have put the SS's on. When they load-up they have almost no traction and the mud takes a very long time to shed. If it is on a climb you are stuck with it. They are not good on wet roots. This goes for the front and the rear. The front tends to slid out and the rear just slips. My full on knobs are way better. The front is not very good at slow speed technical riding. It just seems to wash out as a tight techy turn is negotiated.Based on the above I feel I may have just wasted $70. I was hoping for an all around fast tire to run on most race courses. I do not think the ST2 is that tire. I plan to remove them for now and wait for the dry months to come, at which point I will try them again. If I like them better I will report back. | Overall Rating: |

Conditions in Scotland can be a little gloopy even in the height of summer, but the ST's even coped with that, don't know what they're like in winter mud as I normally change to something a little chunkier then. On hardpack they run really fast digging in on corners giving confidence where before you had none. On loose stuff they have a tendancy to drift more than other tyres through the corners but haven't fallen off yet...... For a general alround tyre, not winter conditions, I highly recommend this to everyone. 5 stars. | Overall Rating: |

I just put the ST on the front, along with a Conti Double Fighter on the rear. It is really amazing the amount of grip these tires have. Many hardpack situations just simply don't require tall knobs, and these tires prove it. There are rides I can take where I would probably switch to other tires (excessive deep sand, goopy-slippery mud), but for most normal rides, the ST is excellent. It manuvers through sand very well, grips hard in corners and it rolls wildly compared to anything else. I've made it up all climbs with no problem, and I believe that the added momentum along with my mostly seated riding style deliver. Remeber, I'm using the Conti in the rear which is more sparsely knobbed than the ST rear, but sketchy gravely climbs have not been a problem. Slicks/Semi-Slicks make you much faster in all but the most extreme tail conditions, and the ST looks like it's one of the more versatile offerings. One of the best things about Bontrager products is that KB watches what you and I have to say and uses our input, along with his experience and knowledge, to return with steadily improved products. If you have questions/problems, Keith himself (one of the leading innovators in Mountain Biking) will respond personally to your requests. Check out http://www.bontrager.com | Overall Rating: |
