Date Reviewed: December 8, 2004
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $200.00
Purchased At:John Henry's
Strengths:Simple adjustments, looks beefy.
Weaknesses:They have a design flaw in that the piston connecting rod unthreads from the aluminum end bolted to the frame. Before it unthreads all the way, it'll likely strip the threads because the lightweight aluminum end makes for soft threads. Then, there's even less threads to hold it making it likely to give away again even if you reinsert it.

Fix is detailed here:

Similar Products Used:Fox (air only) on a cross country bike
Bike Setup:On a low-end Brodie downhill frame, I use this bike for puttering over obstacles at the park and as a backup to my cross country bike.
Bottom Line:Except for the one design flaw (which is major, but maintainable) this shock has served me well. I wouldn't buy this shock new.

Favorite Trail:The woods near my house and the dirt jumps at my friend's house.
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Purchased At:Cycling concepts
Strengths:Great travel. I haven't even set it at its most plush and i love it. It's not too soft and not too hard where i have it set. It also tightens up for a more responsive feel.
Weaknesses:Hard to tighten to get it hard. There are sometimes when you want a stiff back shock and this shock doesnt help you. After a certain point it gets hard to tighten even though there is more room to tighten it. I guess Ijust need to get a hardtail for riding trails.
Similar Products Used:None.
Bike Setup:Gary Fisher Joshua F4, the Shimano deore LT setup(brakes, shifters, and gears all circa 2000), rockshox Jett(front fork), 26 in. tires from wilderness trails, and a shockband fender(was gonna get a THE fender by Serfas but they stopped making them). That's the rig. Nothing special.
Bottom Line:Besides being hard to tighten up at time it rocks!!! It is mega soft when you want it to be. And when it is tightened up(it takes a little bit to get it there) it is very responsive, but still takes some of the bumps.

Weaknesses:HEAVY very HEAVY
Similar Products Used:Fox vanilla
Bike Setup:FSR enduro 99, rockshox judy race (100mm), LX crank, rest XT with ti white bro bars, mavic 517's, azonic, titec etc
Bottom Line:Good shock for the cash and will do the job until an upgrade is needed. I had the same shock on a s-10 schwinn sweetspot when i lived in the UK and the URT system rocked with this shock ( i will always miss that bike!). The FSR rocks too with the 4 bar linkage..........air shock would so bring down the rear weight though.

In the uk the trails are green and totally single track! while here in australia, esp. queensland the trails are dry, dry dry and are rocky as. Melbourne is a bit greener though......but is still hard pack heaven. What i'm trying to say is that the shock does the job on all trails....and if it blows then its more rider error than the shock. Riding is about 80% rider skill and the rest parts and all you ful suss riders should go out on a hardtail and go back to the old school basics of riding. Maybe you will then learn about where to place your body weight when riding! The shock helps but you still have to give it some room! when sitting down over rocks and roots etc.

All you big hitters...satay away from this shock, but all you dirt lovers this may be for you if the weight issue does not piss you off.
overall not a bad shock but looses a few chillies 'cus of the weight it adds to the rear.

Bottom Line:Totally bummed on this new deluxe model. Have only been on the trails twice, and both times I disliked the climbing ability. No lock-out causes too much bounch when trying for the technical climbs. It did do a great job at handeling the rutts and bumps and drops. Will be trading out asap for the older version though. Good shock for shuttle people who like the downhill, but horrible for the climbing.

Bottom Line:I was afraid to use this shock when I got it because I'd heard so many bad reviews. I've actually found it to be pretty good! I had planned on replacing it, but now that I've riden on it for a while, I've really grown to enjoy it. It's got a load of travel and really sucks up the rough shots I tend to deliver. This shock is best suited for the intense, mean rider who likes to drop off cliffs. Together with my Marzocchi on the front I have no fear of heights!

Favorite Trail:White Ranch, Boulder
Duration Product Used:6 months
Strengths:Well, it has a decent amount of travel and rides smooth and unlike an air shock, if your suspension blows out, at least you've got a spring!
Weaknesses:Heavy! Relatively high maintenence and needs serviced frequently. At least Rock Shox fixes them for free.
Similar Products Used:Fox Vanilla
Bike Setup:'98 Yeti AS-3 with Manitou Mars C fork, full Deore XT, Crossmax UST Wheelset.
Bottom Line:A real decent shock for cross-country riding, though quite heavy. I weighed my coil in at 673 grams, and that's just the coil! If you can find a lighter coil for it somewhere (I'm investigating companies who make titanium suspension coils), then a real sweet shock. It rides smooth and has decent travel, but is relatively difficult to maintain. Try and keep this puppy clean or she'll make life a real hassle. It also has a tendency to get air bubbles and sometimes thye leak oil, which means you'll have to send it back to Rock Shox to have it serviced. It's free but just a pain in the neck. I'd recommend this for someone looking for an affordable, decent shock and who doesn't worry about bike weight and likes to clean their bike.

Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:Simple design for non-mechanically inclined people
Weaknesses:No damping adjustments and can't be rebuilt
Similar Products Used:None
Bike Setup:Schwinn 4 Banger, Manitou X-Vert E, Hayes disc brakes
Bottom Line:This shock came stock on my bike so I had no choice but to use it. After reading some of the reviews on it I was expecting it to blow after a few rides and I'll just go buy something better. Surprisingly it has held together very well through the summer season. I've done donwhill courses at the local ski resort, 14 mile long single track (all downhill) runs in Utah, really rocky trails around southern california, and this thing is still in one piece without spewing any oil. The shaft is always clean, even when the stanchions on my front fork gets clumps of dirt on it(meaning: dirty ride). I don't baby this thing, either, since I'm trying to make it fail so I can upgrade.

At first what I noticed was that this shock didn't have much rebound damping so I thought I would just change out the shock oil with heavier weight. Surprisingly, I found out, this thing doesn't come apart! Well, set the bike up with about 20% sag on the rear with the stock 600lbf spring (I weigh 140) and just rode it. Then I kept noticing that the damn rear of the bike jumps and wants to kick me out of the saddle on bumps barely 2in high. It seemed to me like the spring rate had a spike near the latter half of the travel, so I decided to cut down the big, honking rubber bump stop on the shock. After cutting off about 2/3 of the stupid thing the shock worked much more linearly all the way till it bottoms out with a firm stop. I don't know the reason Rock Shox would use a bump stop so big it takes up almost half the 1.5in travel of this shock, but it didn't work well for me.
Well, for an entry level shock that's supposedly very cheap, I think it works well (you get what you paid for). I wouldn't buy this thing aftermarket though. I would recommend it for people that don't want to mess with damping adjustments, lockouts, changing oil, etc..

Bottom Line:I think some of you so called mountain bikers should take a good hard look at yourselves. From what I've read here you are a bunch of ignorant dickheads, with no idea about bike design and setup.

1. Is the shock suitable for the design? Any bike using tha shock as a stressed member of the frame is going to fuk seals eventually. This means Y bikes, canti beams etc. Blame the bike designer, blame yourself but don't blame the shock.

2.Treat you rear shock like your front fork. Put a boot on it and keep the crap out of the seals, and the oil in the shock.

3. Make sure the spring is appropriate for your weight. The manual clearly states that if you require more than two turns of pre load, get another spring. If you use a product outside its specifications, what can you expect?

Use your brains people!!

This shock works fine. It is not for DH, but perfectly OK for the all day cross country dually 80% of people ride.

I do agree on one point though, Rock Shox have crap service

Strengths:There are plenty of them available to break.
Weaknesses:1. This shock is made for people that weigh under 155 lbs. I weigh 220 and have busted 3 of them. I always carry a spare so I just change em out when that happens.

2. Low spring weight.

3. Busted seals.
Similar Products Used:Fox Vanilla
Bike Setup:GT LTS
Bottom Line:Rock shock sucks. All their products are amateur at best. I have had front forks, rear shocks and all have failed me. The rear shocks SUCK!! I have had three break seals and my buddy has had a similar amount go out on him. I wish that the bike companies would switch to FOX or Marazochi brands for a better product.

I am an average rider. I ride cross country and downhill. I am by no means extreme, but I do expect the products I use to stand up to typical riding situations. It is sad when you have to carry a spare shock when going on a trip because you know the one you have is going to fail.

If you work for ROCK SHOCK I hope you read this and make a better shock, cause they SUCK!!! Make them with springs that can hold a weight of 200 lbs at least. Do something about the seals that blow every six months. I hate getting oil all over the back half of my bike and my legs.

I am going to talk to my local bike shop to see what I can do to get a better rear shock on my bike. Rock shock is fine for those who weigh under 150 lbs that ride cross country or city streets. If you are a big guy, and ride on rough terrain see what you can do for a different brand.

Strengths:It is a relatively inexpensive shock. So I think it's a good entry level shock for the not so serious rider.
Weaknesses:I'm a heavier rider (6' 2" 250#) but enjoy everything from X-country to downhill and can pretty extreme. The shock came on my Haro EX2 bike and the original shock was too bouncy and did leak oil fairly soon. I had to upgrade to a beefier spring. I tolerated the oil leak. But then the shock began to squeak (still kinda bouncy). As it was under warranty I got another one. Everything worked well for a while but then on one particular ride it started to squeak really loud and at the bottom of a fast descent (smooth, no bumps) it exploded the support bracket off of the bike and the coil popped off. Offhand sounds like a defective shock, but it IS my second one. I do know what a good shock feels like (also have a Fox Float RC) so I'll probably gravitate to a entry level air shock for my Haro bike now.
Similar Products Used:Fox Float RC
Bike Setup:Judy C Long Travel '99 front shock with speed springs
Bottom Line:If you're going to ride bumps and downhills aggressively or even moderately aggressively, don't use this shock. This is a good one for your Mom who just wants a nice soft suspension and might hit a curb once in a while. It worked well for a while, but don't be too suprised if you have to replace it within a year or so.

I don't know how others are using this shock, but I feel if someone rides with normal discretion this is a great shock. The people who have had problems probably set out to see if they could break it, anyone can break something if you try hard enough.

Bottom Line:My reason for getting this shock? Cheap. For the most part, it has gotten the job done with minimal hassle. I've only been riding my new bike, the GT LTS for a week but on my first ride I blew the seal on the shock. So far I've only rebuilt the shock once, and the seal hasn't leaked or blown again. This shock has performed quite well given the low cost. It's great for everything I've pushed at it--XC, DH and some drops. In my opinion, if you set this shock up properly, with a spring appropriate for your weight and adjust the oil level properly it will perform well. Stock setups generally don't perform well without some fine tuning for each rider.

Bottom Line:This is in fact a cheap shock, but I think I've come up with a rather simple repair for it. I'm currently breaking down the entire bike, Cleaning and replacing parts as necessary(over 1500 miles last year). When tearing down the RS Deluxe, I was amazed by the construction of the shock. Overall, This thing could work if RS would come up with a better setup on the piston ,o- ring and Gasket seal. The rest of the shock is kind of sound. I was thinking about machining the shock to add pre-load/rebound adjustments, but I will only do so if the workaround for the o-ring holds up. My shock has been blown for about 1000 miles, and needless to say the o-ring was toasty.

Favorite Trail:Tom Brown Park, The Fern!
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:It finally broke so now I can get a different one!
Weaknesses:Came with 350lb spring, shaft is about 3mm thick, had a blown seal when I got my new frame with the shock preinstalled, rebound is either on or off, compression didn't work at all.
Similar Products Used:None yet but I heard Cane Creek makes a kick butt shock, so that's what i'm going for next.
Bike Setup:GIANT MCM990(which makes you think for $3,200 they would have used a better shock!), all XT/XTR, Marzocchi, Sun rims.
Bottom Line:Well, for a few months it got the job done with alot of noise, mostly that hissing from the blown seal. I already knew from all these reviews that RS doesn't have the best customer service(local guys even told me too) so I let the seal go and lived with the hissing noise. The rebound screw was either in or out because whenever you set it in the middle, it would just unscrew and you would have no rebound at all by the end of the first mile in the ride. Compression didn't make a damn bit of difference which way I turned the knob, it never changed.

Now for the reason of this review, I was riding at Tom Brown Park in Tallahassee, and I was behind my friend and comeing down a hill to make a turn, all the sudden a heard a snap and clunk clunk as I bottomed out. Turns out that the shaft attachment on the rebound side had shattered and the clunking was the shaft hitting what was left of the top of the shock, which resulted in a bent shaft and the spring popping out the side and hitting my carbon frame! Needless to say I was a little pissed. In the end, I couldn't rig it to make the trip home so I walked the 4 miles. Set the bike down only to awake the next morning with the oil leaking onto the carpet of my apartment(I should have known better).

So it lasted 250 miles. I've been waiting for the opportunity to go get a real shock that I can perhaps feel. I go to the bike shops just to drool over the full suspension bikes they have, the smootheness of the rear is just amazing compared to the rear of my bike. Maybe RS will get smart and start putting these things on the Wal*Mart and K-Mart bikes, you know, the Mongoose line!!! Only 1 upside down burning Plymouth Neon for both value and overall. Face it, just go have a solid post installed instead of the shock, it'll give you alot fewer problems in the future, and you know the ride will never change on ya!

As for blowing seals, it really seems like bike design plays a bike part in how long this shock lives. Bottom Line:worthless. That is the bottem line. I have had this shock for about 3 months and guess what? it got sand or something up inside of it because of a very bad seal. The sad thing is that I take very good car of my bike, and have never set it down in the dirt.. so it got up in there from nothing more then riding it on dirt trails. The killer is this: after it stuck down all the way, and wouldn't come back up (thank god for the I-drive, I can still use it since its my car) I decided to call up rock shox and ask them about it. I sat on HOLD FOR 45 MINS, and for what? to hear we are very sorry, you will have to send the shock in to us so we can take a look at it... so I tell them hey, I can't do that, I have to bike about 13 miles a day to work and back and there is just no way. the answer it get? we can't help you then. After hearing this, im just a little pissed. This is why I love GT, and will always love GT. I call them up to see what the can do for me. 5 mins on the phone, and the guy says ok, the shock should be there eairly next week. sorry for the problem, and thanks for calling Well, I still have the broken shock, I will have to till I get the new one, which will unfortunently be another delux, wish I had the money to get a diff one. I would like to say that GT is the best, if you ever need a bike, go with them.. and that they should move away from rockshox, because they are downgrading their bikes by adding that garbage. I hope that rockshox decides to make better products, because the low end ones that they have now are worthless. I'm sorry that I even have to give this 1 pepper, because it doesnt deserve that.

I've got one of these on my '99 FSR and it's a nice riding unit! OK, it's still pretty new, but I've heard of guys blowing them after just a few hours riding. From what I've read and heard, there are a few things that seem to shorten the life of these things: 1: Dirt and crap on the shock shaft which screws up the seal (wrap it in a Lizard Skin), 2: URT suspension designs, or any design where the shock forms a direct part of the structure - four links should (that is SHOULD!) ease the lateral load on the shaft, 3: Excessive preload - you should buy the right spring for your weight (or swap it at time of purchase) 4: PSYCHO RIDERS - you can't expect this thing to handle 5' drop offs al the time! That will kill almost any shock! A bit of rider finesse helps a shock, fork, and bike last longer! I'm glad I've got that off my chest.

People trash this shock but I have to say that for $40 it's fine... There may be some quality control issues, I can't comment on anything but mine. As far as OE goes, it's OK - works well enough, keeps the price of the bike down, and gives you a good baseline to decide what you would like for your next shock (ie: adjustability, spring rate, etc). It does its job but is not adjustable at all (just spring rate); this is not a shock you would buy to replace anything else with.. Keeping in mind that it is not a performance shock -> 3 Stars based on price, medium performance, & low required maintence.

It's not the bike that makes the difference I think that somewere out there a few of these little puppys last, the lucky people. I've heard the CLUNK on GFs FSR's and Mongooses, I ride a Gary Fisher and I don't like the bike at all. I give this puppy 3 Chillies because it's cheap.

My experience is that this shock don´t have any problem and work very well. I think that the riders with problems have bad luck. For me this is a great product. My bike is a Specialized FSR 98 and after four month never heard CLANK. Perhaps the suspension system of another bikes is the responsable of the problems of lot of people.

I have just got a bike with a RS Deluxe and I love it. All the reviews on this are bad because all the bikes are GC's and Fisher's that you are complaning about. Get a better frame and you will not have this problem! Also, if you don't like the shock so much, why did you get a bike that hade one? I am giving the deluxe five chillies.

This shock came standard on my Schwinn S-10 and was the worst part of the bike. I can see how a lot of people would start blaming the Sweet Spot design for how terribly the bike performed. With a shock this bad, why even have a rear suspension? I could never get the shock adjusted correctly and it was very erratic--it was off and on, off and on...not smooth at all. I replaced the shock with an air-shock and the bike turned from junk to the best overall bike I have ridden. People who are stuck with this shock because they don't have the money to buy another one should bolt in a rigid, 1/2 thick aluminum bar in it's place until they can get up the money for a shock that actually works....do I have to give it a star?

I don´t think I will give this shock a good review because I have had a problem with it. The plug in the bottom of it are loose and air is mixed with the oil just now. It sounds a bit jerky too. The shock in it self is quite good. I own a Gary Fisher Z0.

This shock sucks! It blew internally on the first real ride (specialized GC AIM). Was fixed by rockshox twice but they still didn't notice the piece of seal blocking the oil return hole. Have resorted to fixing it myself and now it works. The clunking noise is because this shock is upside down so the air in the oil cannot slow the piston in the first piece of travel, this shock doesn't have a top out bumper and so you get a metal on metal clunk. This means your shocks floating piston has blown and needs fixed/replaced. Final words what a piece of crap.

Hearing the words ground control and clanking in many of the reviews above makes one fact perfectly obvious: IT'S THE BIKE NOT THE SHOCK!
Now, don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Specialized. It's probably THE best mainstream brand. However, the Mac-strut design of the ground control is kind of clanky and does put a lot of torsional stress on the shock.
I have a rs deluxe and the only thing I don't like about it is the pishh sound it makes when rebounding. For the price, 5 stars

I bought a 1998 Speciialized GC FSR Comp about two months ago and havn't had any problems with the RS Deluxe shock. I would suggest matching springs to your weight. It makes a big difference in how the shock performs and how long it lasts. If your local bike shop didn't tell you about matching your spring to your weight, find a new bike shop with a good mechanic. Your shock should not bottom out all the time. It should only bottom occasionally or on verry rough terrain. If it is bottoming out constantly, or not at all, replace your spring.

I got this shock ('98 version) on my Norco VPS 2 and have blown two shocks in one week. I took my bike into my dealer and luckily he had one lying around in the back of the shop that he put on my bike. Two days later it blew. Apart from this though I love it. It provides a plush ride with out the clanging some people say they've experienced.

Rock Shoz is getting a bad rap. Rock Shox has helped me efficiently when i've experienced problems. A lot of the reviews I have read sound more like the bike than the shock. It also could be the wrong spring rates for the weight of the rider. The bikes are set up for the masses and may not fit indivdual needs. The shops should let people know if they should raise or lower their spring rate.

The LBS will get it replaced soon, but I wonder if the problem will crop up again with the deluxe replacement. Is there any other brand rear shock that will fit my bike? Otherwise I might have to plonk some extra cash for the 98 Rock Shox Coupe....are they any good? because I'm trying to avoid Rock Shox products. Update: After reading all the reviews and experiencing the problems with the Deluxe, I went back the bike shop. They offered to remove it and send it in for warranty. That would just accomplish the bike being out of commission for a few weeks, and then wondering every ride whether this would be the time it would blow. So, forked over $200 and bought the Coupe Deluxe '98 and installed it. Just back from 25 mile ride, and it worked perfectly. Plush but firm, and no bouncing at all. This is the only upgrade that will fit the strut type attachment on the Specialized Ground Control, and it has adjustable rebound. Assuming it doesn't blow, it has solved all the problems. The bike shop said that the '98 Coupe Deluxe has solved the blowing out problem. We'll see. Just in case, I'm having the original warranteed for a backup.

I have only had the Rock Shox for a few months but have not had and problems. It is a 98 version, and is on a Schwinn S-10. It rides plush, the rebound is predictable, and is tracks nicely. It seems like Specialized may have problems that can not be blamed entirely on the shock. The spring could offer a bit more adjustability. If you don't use a lizard skin shock boot your seals will blow.

It finaly happened. It was just a matter of time. My Deluxe shock busted its seal. For those people intending to buy one, don't. Pay the extra money for a good shock like Noleen or Fox. Rockshoxs doesn't make very good rear shocks. They've been struggling in the design department and it shows. Read my Specialized Ground Control Comp review nad it will show you how to test for a blown seal. I have to give credit to Paul Miller for showing me how to take apart the shock. Thanks. Since Rock Shoxs is the only one so far that makes a strut design rear shock, I have to stick with these guys for a while. If I had a choice, I'd go with a Fox Vanilla RX Air shock, or a Nolleen.
