from Sweden Date Reviewed: November 28, 2003 | | Duration Product Used: | More than 3 years | | Purchased At: | came with the bike | | Strengths: | durability, low maintenance | | Weaknesses: | heavier than air shocks | | Bike Setup: | 97 GT LTS 2 with RS Duke Race. | | Bottom Line: | I've been xc-riding with this shock for 5 years now, and have never had any problems. I tuned the coil when it was new and put a lizard skin over it, and I haven't touched it since then. After reading the reviews here I became a bit concerned that not even this shock will last forever without love and care, so I removed the lizard skin for the first time today and oiled the piston. I expect it to last for many rides to come if I continue to oil it occationally. The LTS is designed for this shock and I'm happy with how it feels, so if it eventually breaks, I'll try to find the same shock again. If I can't find one, I'll probably try an air shock to save weight.

from oz Date Reviewed: November 29, 2002 | | Duration Product Used: | More than 3 years | | Strengths: | hasn't broken (yet) | | Weaknesses: | doesn't work terrifically well, not enough adjustment possible without disassembly, dubious spares availability (for anything from Rockshox or Manitou) | | Bottom Line: | Despite replacing the spring, fiddling with the damping, etc, the shock has never worked as well as I would like. I don't have enough mileage on the competition to know if my expectations are realistic or not, but it seems to me that it should be possible for the thing to have enough damping to prevent vertical takeoff over water bars, while at the same time remaining reasonably active on stutter bumps.
Still waiting for it to die so can justify something which works better.
The spring is a nice shade of red though... | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$39.00 | | Purchased At: | www.ICYCLESUSA.com | | Bottom Line: | The bottom line is if you have a GT LTS and need a new shock then you either have a RockShox Coupe Deluxe or need one. If you have one the seals will adventually leak. I have found that it is easier to replace the shock then try to rebuild it. The advantage to this is you can get new bushings with a new shock. There is a company on the web called ICYCLES that sells replacements at a ridiculously low prices. Just buy a New one each time you blow the seals out so you can spend your time riding and not wrenching! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

If your into pogo sticks, this shock's for YOU!!! | | Weaknesses: | Limited life expectancy. Leaks like a sieve. Poor, poor , poor customer support! | | Bike Setup: | Schwinn Straight 6 | | Bottom Line: | I swore that I would never purchase another RockShox product years ago when at a national race I handed my Mag20 to the RockShox mechanic for a tune-up. I told him that the fork had no dampening or rebound. He turned to me and replied "dude, it's not the forks fault 'cause that thing never worked right.. it's the riders fault for not purchasing a new fork that's why they came out with the new Mag21". Unfortunately, years later I became reinvoled with RockShox after purchasing what I thought was an otherwise superior DH racer. The first shock worked fine until the adjuster knob came off, and off it went to RockShox for service. It has since been back to RockShox 3 times, and has never been fixed properly. The first time it came back oil just spilled out of the piston with each stroke and it took them two months to fix. The second and third times the turnaround time was near a month and although the shocks didn't leak oil, it still had no rebound or dampening. I mean pure pogo pleasure! RockShox has given such poor customer service I'd advise anyone never to buy their crapy products. But if you do have a Straight 6 and plan on keeping it for some time I advise you get to your local distributor and get as many rebuild kits as possible because this shock is no longer being manufactured and it will just be a matter of time when that mechanic at the races tells you "hey dude, it's not the shocks fault it doesn't work 'cause it never did, its the riders fault for buying it!" I've had it for a year and this is the first review I've written. I have owned or used various Fox shocks on both bicycles and snowmobiles and have found them to be very unreliable and maintenance intensive. When they work, they work well, but the reliability is just not there. My Rock Shox shock has worked perfectly for the past year down to temperatures of -15 with no ill effects. The rebound adjustment works and is very handy during the cold temps. My most recent experience with the Fox Vanilla R shock on my girlfriend's Trek VRX was with a shock that ceased working after less than a month. I have no explanation for why there are so many bad reviews on this site. My experience has been very good and my previous dealings with Rock Shox warrenty and service department left me coming out ahead when I returned some forks for worn bushings. I guess if you are looking to buy this shock as an accessory you should ask local riders if they are having trouble with it in your area. Up here in Alaska this shock works far better than the Fox products I have seen and used. | Overall Rating: |

I have nothing good to say about this shock. I got one as a replacement (warranty) for my specialized AIM after the original deluxe died for the fourth time. The first replacement I got weeped oil from the main seal out of the box, it also contained air in the oil and suffered from topout noise and shock with very little preload. That shock lasted two months of riding, mainly around Christchurch about 200km in total before the main seal blew oil all over my bike. The replacement I got didn't have the air problems but didn't work well either. It is so harsh on compression that it kicks the back wheel up off the ground over small roots and rocks. It's also underdamped on rebound which worsens the previous effect. This is with a lighter spring than came stock on the bike. That shock lasted only 100km of riding before I hit a rainrut with the rear wheel which blew the floating piston in the shock, letting nitrogen mix with the oil and turning a badly performing shock into a pogo stick. I'm really getting sick of RS's badly designed and performing rear shocks, I haven't been able to ride my bike for 3 months in the two years I've owned it because I've been waiting for shock repairs or replacements. | Overall Rating: |

I blundered by placing this note on the superdelux rear shock board. Here it is where it belongs on the crap-delux BB.I can't believe Fisher is still spec'ing this crap on 1999 bikes. My '98 Josh Z1 spent almost half the time on the rag last year as it did ready to ride. Here's the poop though. If you get one of these shox on your new bike and it works for you good!!! you are lucky--play the Lotto. If, however, you have trouble like those posted here, especially with the remote lock-out function, go directly (call) to Fisher/Trek customer service and tell them you demand a credit for the shock and have that money applied to a different shock. This worked for me and I'm finally satisfied and riding a Statos Helix Pro (It cost me an additional $75.00). I had to go through my dealer to have this done, Fisher won't send you $$$ directly but it worked out for me. I still can't believe Fisher hasn't learned from last year... I've got a RS Coupe Deluxe pull shock on my Yet Lawwill and I can honestly say no complaints (touch wood) although by the tone of a lot of the reviews here I might be lucky. The rebound adjustbility really does make a difference and is great for tuning for different courses. One question I have is whether the pull shock comes in two different versions - my friend has a Lawwill 6 and it appears to have a longer stroke - or can you retune the shock to get a longer stroke? | Overall Rating: |

I'm not going to sit here and blame fisher for this defect but I do think they need to put a better shock than this piece of crap. With one 4 foot jump two days ago I managed to blow my front Maniou X vert and rip the lockout cable from my coupe deluxe, I've abused my huffy more than this bike and its already breaking apart. All I can say is that this shock is way over rated by a lot of people. I have blown, two of them on big drops. I think that they suck for a few reasons, 1. Don't have a progressive spring. 2. Difficult to dissasemble, in comparison to a Noleen 3. No bottom out air preload, 4. Not reliable. 5. limited preformance Don't buy this shock!!! I now have a Stratos Helix Pro which totally rocks. It's super plush, very adjustable , reliable, awesome on big hits, and has a sweet progressive feel.Don't buy the coupe deluxe, sorry for those that have it but it is shitty! | Overall Rating: |

While I'm not a big fan of the Joshua bikes, I think everyone should lay off the joshua owners and blaiming the shock problems on the fact that the shock is on a Joshua. Yes, the lock out is stupid (buy a hardtail, or a better FS design), but Rock Shox is still who is making the rear shock. Is it Fisher's fault? No, it Rock Shox's fault that they make the shock with the lock out. If they can't get it to work, they should stop doing it. All you can blaim Fisher for is specing the shock, NOT the quality, but hey maybe he's too busy claiming to be the founder of mountain biking (who cares?). And so you know if you are interested, I've given two previous rewiews, with a low score, and my bike does not have the lock out, and I still think it stinks! | Overall Rating: |

Had this rear on my Fisher Joshua X0 for 7 months. Maintenance - none, even after week after week of hard Marin & Peninsula riding through mud, dust, water, etc. As for design, there were some problems. First, when the unassembled bike showed up at my LBS, there was an unspecified problem with the remote dampening adjuster, which took a few weeks to rectify. Second, the rubber piece which covers the dampening peg would get full of crap and jam the peg, so I cut the sucker off. As for performance, it has been excellent. I especially like the remote dampening adjuster, which allows for variable dampening. Four chilies, 'cause of the minor design problems.

This is the specified shock on my 98 Fisher Z1 Joshua. I am on my second unit. I noticed a clicking and some play when the suspension is at its most extended position. I traced this to the damper shaft where it screws into the lower mount. It worked so loose that it blew right out of the mount, spewing oil and a nasty assortment of metal bits all over the place !. It was replaced by my long suffering dealer with a unit off my parts bike(see Xvert review) and after a week the sames problem became apparent. This time I put some blue loctite on the exposed threads and tightened it up as hard as I dared. So far it had held up. I also have had problems withe the remote damping shaft sticking in the fully damped position. When the shock works it has a very progressive action and is well suited to the bike. I previously reviewed the Coupe Deluxe on 2/5/98. Since that time Rockshox has sent my dealer not one but two replacement shocks and I am still having the same problem. I ride a 98 Fisher Joshua Z1 spec'ed with the Coupe Deluxe which includes a remote dampener/lockout control mounted on the handlebar. The remote will often jam in the lockout position and will no release especially in wet and dirty conditions (you know, like when you're on a trail) also the shock does not come close to full dampening with 1/2 to 1 of travel when the dampener is fully engaged. I finally got tired of dealing with Rockshox and since the bike is a Fisher product I decided to contact the Trek/Fisher customer service center to request a credit for the Coupe Deluxe. I received a supervisor's approval and I'm going to apply that money to purchase a Statos Helix with remote. I can't believe I'm the only person who has had this problem using a Rockshox Coupe or even Super Deluxe on a Joshua. It appears to be a design problem. | Overall Rating: |

The XL Diamonback frame had to be warrantied and most other parts have been replaced or updated. Just now noted a lot of slopp in the lower shock bushing used to attach to the frame. A friend has the same problem with a newer bike. This is possibly a larger problem since I didn't notice it until it was pointed out to me. The way to check is to lift bike with seat and push down on tire. Check for slopp in the bushings. I keep preload to a minimum. This shock works great.

The real trouble is the lock out system. I've had the bike in the shop more than I've been able to ride due to repairs and even a replacement dampener. The problem appears to be the design of the farrel portion of the unit which does not allow the pistion to release the shock once engaged. My local shop was able to file down the pistion to stop it from catching on the housing (not an approved method I'm sure but it works now). That's really too bad, our customers deserve better, but Rock Shox had such a strong name in the industry, that bike companies are forced to use their parts so they can sell bikes. The adjuster on the 98 shocks is much better than needing a scrwedriver. it's not really fair to rate the shock without trying something else on the bike for a comparison. At higher speeds, while off or partially off the seat, there is a very annoying top-out clunk. Chain slap, plus top-out clunk makes high speed decents rather noisy.I also have the pre-load spring cranked as tight as I can twist it. I have been told going to a heavier spring will increase the shocks performance. I don't know if I want to invest more money in this mediocre shock.
