After reading the reviews here, I was wondering if I should even use it. But after doing the research, I found that RockShox's set up instructions differ greatly Giant's for the SID. Where Giant says to set up the negative chamber at 50 pounds no matter what. RockShox says for a firm ride, set the negative chamber to 50-80 percent of the positive. And for a softer ride, 90 to 110 percent. For more details, check out the link below. And if you look around the website, you'll find the service guide giving complete instructions for a rebuild.

My friends always worry about how they'lI hold up. WHY? I don't worry, I just ride the hell out of them. I weigh 210 with full gear. I ride the rocky east coast. I jump and crash all my bikes cuz it's part of MTBiking. And I have no probs with this shock, on either bike. It is a bit stiff compared to my 5th coil, but this is a XC shock. I got this Sugar from the classifieds on this website for an incredible deal. The Rock Shox SID came with the bike and worked well throughout the summer with almost no maintenance. I'm 225lbs and rode it fairly stiff. It took most of the punishment dished out for over 7 months then, all of the sudden the cold weather hits and the air chambers went flat. Pumped it back up and rode for another week only to find the seals are now blown. Took it to the local shop and found the rebound mechanism is blown too. Due to the horrendous reputation Rock Shox has regarding customer service, I'm not even going to try to call them, I've just purchased a Cane Creek Cloud Nine to put on my bike. The Cane Creek is getting rave reviews and costs less money. If you're a Clydesdale rider, be careful when purchasing a rear Rock Shock. It will run good for awhile then fall apart.

First one was a SID XC, after a months use the negative air spring started leaking.
Warranty replacement: no. 2 was another SID XC, 1 month later, air started shifting between the positive and negative air springs (but at least it stayed in the shock this time!)
Warranty replacement: no. 3 was a SID race (adjustable rebound damping), this has done much better! After about 3 months the damping started going a bit funny to the point that I now have the damping adjuster screwed all the way in to get the same damping as half way through the adjustment from new. Unfortunately the negative spring valve has just blown off (4 months for this one!) and covered my leg in oil :(
I weigh about 145lb and ride all sorts, including dropoffs up to about 3 feet (before I get too scared). Perhaps my problems are related to the Marin having 6 inches of travel (sometimes I use 5) but I have now given up on Rockshox.

adjustability is a prob for a while. just make sure you know what you wiegh, and find a manual so you can know what your doing.
it worked better than the cane creek. the cane creek was from a long time ago and there have been changes in the industry.

I can't even tell you how this shock performs because I can't tell it's back there. 1 1/4" travel is just not enough to be effective, I should have just bought a hardtail because thats what this bike really is. So far I have not broken it yet, but I have to add air every time I ride. I don't know if this is normal, but it is a pain in the @$$ to have to carry a shock pump everywhere I ride. My SID fork doesn't leak air as bad.

Some people prefer spring shocks, but that's a matter of taste and riding style. Rear SID takes quite a beating, it's fast and responsive, plush and stiff at the same time. Some have problems setting it up. I don't. And I don't have my bike just for shows. You should always know that when you attach the pump on the valve, a bit of air gets out. After you pump the correct pressure in the shock, you'll hear air getting out again. Don't be afraid, that's only the air from the pump itself, not from the shock. I just want to let you know that your conclusion of why you are not getting consistent air pressure readings is not correct.
I don't want you to blow out your seals by adding too much air.
What's happening is that the air chamber is so small that when you insert the pump, you're letting air into the pump and out of the shock.
Since the air volume is so small, by letting air into the pump you have increased the size of the air chamber thus giving you a lower pressure reading
SO, the pressure that you read just before you pull the pump out IS the correct pressure in the shock. The PHSSSS you here is air coming out of the pump, not the shock
Now when you put the pump back in, you will get a lower reading because you have let that air out of the shock into the pump.

I had trouble trying to dial in the correct (repeatable !) air pressures in the +/- chambers. Finally figured out that pump was letting air out when unscrewed from shock. The amount of air released is different for each chamber due to different volumes. So for 150 psi in the + chamber, put in 165. For the -ve chamber to get 130 psi, put in about 235 psi. Make sure you unscrew/release pump adaptor in one quick movement. I finally caved. Never thought I would ride a dually, but thanks to my rear SID, I love this bike! I can pump up that SID so high, I get little if any bobbing on climbs, but I still get travel on big bumps. Swell. So far the shock has given me zero problems in the first 4 months. I'm hoping this theme will carry...

The bike is in the shop now. I hope that the air leak can be fixed under warranty. Upgraded my trek Y-3 with a Rock Shock rear Sid the shock works great you have a postive and negative chamber to pump up once it was set up the shock worked mint you can adjust it to off set the bio-paceing you sometimes get with the y bikes it is very active and i can,t believe how light it is the best upgrade anybody with a trek y can get . | | Overall Rating: |
