Strengths:    seems to be plush. soaks up big hits, i weigh 200 so thats says something. super adjustable.

Weaknesses:    apparently it has a problem leaking. havent experienced this yet.

Bottom Line:
when i got the bike used, the shock didnt work at all. so i tore it down and found that the cap the shaft goes through had loosened up at some point and leaked all of the oil out. so i added KING shock oil and put it back together and now it works like a champ. If you have problems with yours i would recommend just fixing it yourself. most likey it an easy fix

Bottom Line:
There have been plenty of reviews on this shock, but I would like to put in my two cents.

Two days ago I was riding my bike to school and I rode down a flight of stairs (tires never left the ground) and when I got to the bottom the spring on the shock snapped in half!

Naturally I was pissed, but I thought to myself, 'no big deal. this sort of thing has to be under warranty because the spring really isn't supposed to break under any circumstances let alone riding it on the ground'. Well, guess what? Gave ol' Fox a call and they told me that it was not under warranty! That is some complete and utter bull sh*t.

They have completely lost my business and I feel it is my duty to let everyone else know how Fox treats their customers...ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS!

I am now going to buy a Romic and Fox can go to HELL!

Strengths:    Blue compression knob looks cool

Weaknesses:    Everything, read below

Bottom Line:
This shock licks! One ride and it blew up, 2 weeks later, new shock, two more rides, BLEW UP AGAIN. Please, if you listen to only one review on this site, DO NOT BUY THIS POS SHOCK. Rock shox should quit pissing around and either do some actual R & D before releasing product, or stick to making boxxers. psssssssssssss, hey whats that? Oh yah, ITS MY STUPID VANILLA RC SUCKIN WIND AGAIN.

Honestly I would not purchase this shock unless you are a seriously light duty kinda rider, in which case you could probably get away with an air shock.

Strengths:    really adjustible, looks mad, it's a fox

Weaknesses:    none

Bottom Line:
i bought my avanti as frame only, 2nd hand. it came with a blown rockshox delux. i soon changed it over to a dnm dv22, i had heaps of trouble trying to get the spring rate right on this and ended up spending a fortune. then a 2nd hand fox vanilla rc came up and i decided to stop messing around wif cheap shox and bought it. i've had it for 2 days and havn't once had a proble with it. the compession alows you to almost lock out the shock for uphills and the rebound is also incredibly adjustable, the shock is quiet and smooth and will go as plush or as hard as u like. BUY THIS SHOCK!!!!!

Strengths:    Look 'mr cross country rider with tight lycra suit'Cannondales are sh*t, they have the worst looking frames around and the Fox Vanilla RC is for DH riding! You know, where you ride bikes downhill, not g*y cannondale x-country bikes with leftys and headshocks, those are g*y dude! so is a cross country bike with a Vanilla RC shock!

Weaknesses:    Nothing this is one of the best shocks around and should last you a lifetime!Very reliable and the poeple at Mojo suspension are really helpfull!

Bottom Line:
The fox vanilla RC shock is really reliable and I only ride drops and it hasn't blown once.I had one on my Marin Wildcat trail and it was perfect and still is. This shock is the best available and works pefectly well in the Scottish weather!Buy one!

Strengths:    none

Weaknesses:    If you are reading this review to figure out if you should buy this shock....DON'T BUY THIS SHOCK.

Just keep reading the reviews......everyone has to send the shock back for repairs. It is a total JOKE!! I'm on my forth "return to builder" since buying the bike. I need to research to see if I can find something else that will fit on my Jekyl. On top of the poor product...the service sucks at Fox. I called up, got Brian, told him I'm leaving the country for a race in three days and he said that they didn't have a replacement in stock that they could send me and that they couldn't get the shock fixed in time. He said, "I can't put you in front of all the other people". He offered no solution for me to get a replacement working shock in time for the trip. Ugh....had to fork over $320 to get a new one.

Bottom Line:
SUCKS....SUCKS....SUCKS....SUCKS....

Submitted by Bryan a Downhiller from Telluride, CO

Date Reviewed: October 31, 2002

Strengths:    Soaks up large, sharp rocks and logs without any problems. Also seems to land off of drops fairly well.
Compression and rebound damping have a noticeably wide range of adjustment

Weaknesses:    My rebound damping stopped working completely, but Fox rebuilt it free under the warranty.
- Compression damping knob is painfully difficult to turn.
- preload (sag) setting is tough to set - threads go all the way up the shock body - this is a tease because the owners manual reccomends not to turn past 2 rotations of preload. There is no way to tell for sure when to start counting 2 turns. They should put a maximum preload setting line on the shock body or a stopper.

Bottom Line:
Shock seems to perform well, but there seems to be alot of cases where the RC has had to be sent back to the factory - The durability is not the greatest.

Strengths:    it is a lovly rear shock i have taken it off 16 foots and still going bigger and it has not blown yet. the sus has a nice buttery feal and rides dh well takes drops with a nice progressive feal

Weaknesses:    feel a bit sticky when coldand have not ridden for a day and not a nice compressing feal but bounces on it for a sec and it is back to its normal self

Bottom Line:
this shock is hot and i am no bigginer i think people say it is pooo from not having a good frame or rear sus desing you have to have a good frame to like it .on my frame i have the rear shock set in progressive because of the rear sus desing. it feals nice sokes up 8 foot flatys and 16 foots onto slope so it must be good just rememder what fame you got it on

Date Reviewed: August 23, 2002

Strengths:    It is light, the lock-out is nice, and it does its job

Weaknesses:    I find it to be a little harsh/ not as plush as say a Cane Creek. Also seal blew, always gotta put air in it before a ride

Bottom Line:
It is an average sock.

Because the seals are blown, not to happy with that, but I understand thats part of dealing with equipment. But my bro and I have the same bike, he has a CC and I have a Fox. Personally I think that his rides smoother and plusher.

So overall, average, nothing special. Now the FORX kick ass.

Date Reviewed: August 18, 2002

Strengths:    Everything. very plush, very adjustable, looks dope.

Weaknesses:    After reading the reviews I was a little bit wary of the shocks reliability, but it is the sh1t. I don't see any weaknesses here.

Bottom Line:
If you have a heckler get an RC or at least an R otherwise you won't realize the full potential of your ride. If you get on '02 definitely get the 5th Element. BL: No matter what you ride you can't really go wrong with this shock, better than RS, I know that for sure. Not sure it is worth msrp $350 try to find it cheaper, chances are, you can.

Strengths:    Everything! excellent ajustability great spring amazingly plush on the downhill courses!

Weaknesses:    Bit expensive

Bottom Line:
The 2002 vanilla RC from Fox shox is great. Although a bit expensive it's still worth every penny. The shock has great rebound and compression adjustment different weight springs are avaliable to suit every rider so if you love big hits, big drops, downhill and need a shock to cope with this the 2002 vanilla RC from Fox Shocks is one of the best bets to give you complete satisfaction!

Strengths:    None

Weaknesses:    No dampening, weak piston, rebound does not work right.

Bottom Line:
Bottom line I have changed the spring rate 3 times ( the last on the recommendation of FOX) and I have blown this thing up three times now ALL on normal (no huge drops) downhill courses. Im 5'10" 195 lbs with a 800lbs sping and I bent the piston AGAIN...........something is up.......

If this thing can't handle regular downhill use WHY is it spec'd on so many downhill bikes..........I am calling FOX right now and getting this thing fixed THEN, it's either a Romic or an Avalanch..........something that works.
