Favorite Trail:bootleg canyon
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:came with my bike
Strengths:seems to be plush. soaks up big hits, i weigh 200 so thats says something. super adjustable.
Weaknesses:apparently it has a problem leaking. havent experienced this yet.
Bike Setup:03 mountain cycle shockwave. marzocchi super t pro fork, azonic outlaw wheels. 2.5 kenda
Bottom Line:when i got the bike used, the shock didnt work at all. so i tore it down and found that the cap the shaft goes through had loosened up at some point and leaked all of the oil out. so i added KING shock oil and put it back together and now it works like a champ. If you have problems with yours i would recommend just fixing it yourself. most likey it an easy fix

Favorite Trail:Recess (Spencer Lake), Whitefish, MT
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Purchased At:came with 02 stinky 9
Bottom Line:There have been plenty of reviews on this shock, but I would like to put in my two cents.

Two days ago I was riding my bike to school and I rode down a flight of stairs (tires never left the ground) and when I got to the bottom the spring on the shock snapped in half!

Naturally I was pissed, but I thought to myself, 'no big deal. this sort of thing has to be under warranty because the spring really isn't supposed to break under any circumstances let alone riding it on the ground'. Well, guess what? Gave ol' Fox a call and they told me that it was not under warranty! That is some complete and utter bull sh*t.

They have completely lost my business and I feel it is my duty to let everyone else know how Fox treats their customers...ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS!

I am now going to buy a Romic and Fox can go to HELL!

Strengths:Blue compression knob looks cool
Weaknesses:Everything, read below
Similar Products Used:5th Element, Vanilla R
Bike Setup:Bullit with Boxxer & 5th element (now)
Bottom Line:This shock licks! One ride and it blew up, 2 weeks later, new shock, two more rides, BLEW UP AGAIN. Please, if you listen to only one review on this site, DO NOT BUY THIS POS SHOCK. Rock shox should quit pissing around and either do some actual R & D before releasing product, or stick to making boxxers. psssssssssssss, hey whats that? Oh yah, ITS MY STUPID VANILLA RC SUCKIN WIND AGAIN.

Honestly I would not purchase this shock unless you are a seriously light duty kinda rider, in which case you could probably get away with an air shock.

Bottom Line:i bought my avanti as frame only, 2nd hand. it came with a blown rockshox delux. i soon changed it over to a dnm dv22, i had heaps of trouble trying to get the spring rate right on this and ended up spending a fortune. then a 2nd hand fox vanilla rc came up and i decided to stop messing around wif cheap shox and bought it. i've had it for 2 days and havn't once had a proble with it. the compession alows you to almost lock out the shock for uphills and the rebound is also incredibly adjustable, the shock is quiet and smooth and will go as plush or as hard as u like. Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $319.00
Strengths:none
Weaknesses:If you are reading this review to figure out if you should buy this shock....DON'T BUY THIS SHOCK.

Just keep reading the reviews......everyone has to send the shock back for repairs. It is a total JOKE!! I'm on my forth "return to builder" since buying the bike. I need to research to see if I can find something else that will fit on my Jekyl. On top of the poor product...the service sucks at Fox. I called up, got Brian, told him I'm leaving the country for a race in three days and he said that they didn't have a replacement in stock that they could send me and that they couldn't get the shock fixed in time. He said, "I can't put you in front of all the other people". He offered no solution for me to get a replacement working shock in time for the trip. Ugh....had to fork over $320 to get a new one.

Submitted by Bryan a Downhiller from Telluride, CO
Date Reviewed: October 31, 2002
Duration Product Used:6 months
Strengths:Soaks up large, sharp rocks and logs without any problems. Also seems to land off of drops fairly well.
Compression and rebound damping have a noticeably wide range of adjustment
Weaknesses:My rebound damping stopped working completely, but Fox rebuilt it free under the warranty.
- Compression damping knob is painfully difficult to turn.
- preload (sag) setting is tough to set - threads go all the way up the shock body - this is a tease because the owners manual reccomends not to turn past 2 rotations of preload. There is no way to tell for sure when to start counting 2 turns. They should put a maximum preload setting line on the shock body or a stopper.
Bike Setup:Rocky Mtn RM7 FR 2002 stock
Bottom Line:Shock seems to perform well, but there seems to be alot of cases where the RC has had to be sent back to the factory - The durability is not the greatest.

Strengths:It is light, the lock-out is nice, and it does its job
Weaknesses:I find it to be a little harsh/ not as plush as say a Cane Creek. Also seal blew, always gotta put air in it before a ride
Similar Products Used:Cane Creek AD-12
Bike Setup:2003 SJ Comp, Eggbeaters, pythons, thomsom seatpost, easton stem, flite saddle
Bottom Line:It is an average sock.

Because the seals are blown, not to happy with that, but I understand thats part of dealing with equipment. But my bro and I have the same bike, he has a CC and I have a Fox. Personally I think that his rides smoother and plusher.

So overall, average, nothing special. Now the FORX kick ass.

If this thing can't handle regular downhill use WHY is it spec'd on so many downhill bikes..........I am calling FOX right now and getting this thing fixed THEN, it's either a Romic or an Avalanch..........something that works.

Weaknesses:EVERYTHING. Damping? oh no we cant give you damping because we recommend you set the shock sag and run the compression all the way open. wtf kind of bs is that? whats the point of running a shock with no compression? let me just stuff the spring under my bike and go!

if youre looking for a shock upgrade from a fox (and who isnt?) go to www.romicmfg.com and call them up!! you can order a shock from them or you can drive out there and they will build you a shock right infront of you in less than an hour!! no lies. plus you get real damping and real customer service with romic.

Strengths:works well on speed bumps
Weaknesses:Inaccurate spring rates (i.e. 500# actually 450-480#).
If you break it Fox will probably blame you.
Customer service is horrible!!!
Easy to bottom out.
Compression knob is nearly impossible to turn.
I have sent it in twice in 6 months.
Confusing recipe for proper preload setting.
Guys at customer service need to get on the same page.
NOT DURABLE!
Similar Products Used:Stratos Helix Expert
Bottom Line:POOR VALUE! You will spend a lot of money & waste a lot of time getting it fixed. Big guys (180+ lbs.) AVOID IT!...It bottoms out on a regular basis. It can't handle aggressive riding. If you have one get a Mountain Speed spring upgrade. I want to sell mine & get something else. The customer service/warranty dept is so bad it makes me long to hear an automated recording. Fox couldn't even recommend the correct spring rate for me. I've had to buy 2 extra springs. They finally got it right on the last spring I bought. Too bad it cost me $70 by the time they figured it out. I could go on, but all you need to read is DO NOT BUY THIS SHOCK! I would even stay away from bikes that spec this shock. AVOID THIS SHOCK LIKE THE PLAGUE! Fox needs to wake up & smell the coffee. Read the rest of the reviews. How can this receive a "consumer choice award"?

Duration Product Used:1 Year
Purchased At:Supergo
Strengths:Super-adjustable and easy to tune. Plush, smooth stroke.
Weaknesses:Broken spring retainer.
Bike Setup:Intense Uzzi SL
Bottom Line:Wonderful heavy-duty shock. Absorbs big hits without complaint, and smooths out the smaller high-frequency bumps at high speed. With the horst-link pivots on my Intense, I can still hammer long climbs without too much pedal-induced bobbing. While a shock's performance depends a lot on the bike's suspension design, I've loved this shock in my current set-up.

The only real problem I've encountered is a broken spring retainer. The spring retainer holds the coil in place on the bottom end of the shock. In my case there was just barely enough retainer left after the break to prevent the coil from sliding down the shaft and ripping off the rebound adjuster knob, so it was a $2 repair instead of an entire shock replacement. Fox said I probably set my preload too stiff, but I'm pretty confident that's not the case. But they shipped me the part overnight in time for my weekend ride.

My Vanilla RC came OEM on my Bullit. I weighed 220 lbs when I got my Bullit and I've ridden hard about 3 times a week for the last 7 months. This shock has given me no problems at all. No leaks, perfect damping, no fade, 6" of plush, smooth, consistent travel in the rear.

I will say that the LBS had to put the correct spring on it for my weight when I first got it (for free). The standard spring is too wimpy for heavy riders. I've also set the sag and rebound/compression settings to the recommendations on the Santa Cruz website.

I can't comment on everyone else's setup or their installations, but I set mine up correctly and the shock works great.

Strengths:I got it cheap, and it fit my bike and it was better than the noleen I had on there!!
Weaknesses:I'm afraid to increase the compression damping on drops to flat because of the possibility that the shock will explode.
Similar Products Used:Noleen nr4, nr2

Bottom Line:Everyone whines about fox shocks exploding. Well mine hasn't. Its probably 2 years old. I got it second hand about a year ago, and slapped it on my k2 disco monkey. I absolutely love having the adjustability and it's actually quite plush. At $125 I couldn't pass it up, but I wouldn't pay more than $250 for the thing. Bottom line, It doesn't "wow" me, but it's sufficient.

But this iz still my 2nd shock in 6 months. 1st it was an oil seal. Now if feels like theirs a rock in side the freakin thing. It's awful. And the funny thing is i don't even ride my bike that much. Friend had a Bullit, blown shock. Friend had a super 8, blew the Fox. You get the point, now don't put yourself through.

It made my bike a lot smoother through the rough stuff, and i still never bottomed it out, unlike my old RX
Weaknesses:none yet
Similar Products Used:Fox Vanilla RX
Bike Setup:2001 x-vert carbons, 2002 Vanilla RC, hayes brakes, mavic 321's, all on a 98 Intense M1
Bottom Line:I had a old 98 Vanilla RX on my M1 and it sucked in the rough stuff, and it bottomed out until one day that i did a 10 foot drop onto flat ground and i heard a pop, so I sent it back and asked for a trade up and they gave me $350 for the RX and all i had to pay was $150 to get my 2002 RC. So for the 2002 RC the shock takes everything you can throw at it and you can run soft springs and still do big drops without feeling it. Its amazing, if you have a chance to get one, don't hesitate unless your a fat slob and shouldn't even be riding, just give it to me.

Bottom Line:I weigh 165lbs. and rode this shock for a week before it blew the first time. this shock is reasonable smooth in many conditions BUT if you are looking for a new shock and are an aggressive DH rider/racer or like to take big drops 8ft+ pay the extra $100 and but an Avalanche. Once I put the avalanche shock on Holy *****!!! The back end of the bike is glued to the ground no matter what the conditions. I ride MUCH smoother and faster than I though possible. The avalanche shock also turns ANY drop into a pillow soft landing. When you order the avalanche guys custom valve the shock for your weight and style. Sure it is heavier and more expensive than a FOX but if you want to go faster and bigger than ever before buy an Avalache.

I could get 4 high end shocks for my pickup that would last a lifetime without any service. Fox has been making motorcycle shocks for years that are dependable with a 170lb. rider, 200+lb bike, and jumping 60-70+feet and they can't do it for a mountainbike. Sad that even when we are willing to dish out the big cash we still get an unreliable product. Stratos and Fox, high end shocks, but if you weren't a mtbiker and read the reviews you would think they were JUNK.

Strengths:Im on my 2nd shock, and have had no problems at all. Brilliant action and super smooth.
Weaknesses:They are (or have been) difficult to get hold of here in the UK. Seems the problem is sorted now with Mojo.
Similar Products Used:RS Super Deluxe (OK, but crap adjustability and reliability), Fox Vanilla (only preload adjustable)
Bike Setup:Brand spankin' new Bullit 2002, 2002 Fox RC, Jr T (soon to be ditched), Hope discs, Hope Bulb hubs, Race Face/Shimano drivechain, etc...
Bottom Line:I originally got my first one on a 99 Stinky Dee-Lux. It worked brilliantly on that, even though the stock compression damping was slow (compression clicker made it slow, or ultra-slow). Now I have a 2002 model on a Bullit, and that's brilliantly setup straight out.
Ive had no problems with blowing it up, oil leaking etc...
Performance wise it's everything I could ask for. Unlike my buddy's RS Super Deluxe, the clickers actually make a difference. The stroke of the shock is smooth and controlled.
Touch wood that I dont get the same problems with it blowing up, now that I've just said how great it is! :-)

Strengths:Well let me think.... a lot better than my previous shocks, not too light, not too heavy, good choice of springs.
Fox USA aint too helpful when you email them to ask about set ups, copping out and refering me to phone the uk importer.
Weaknesses:Weak as a little kitten, mine lasted about about a month before i noticed oil on the threads of the piggyback reservior, then about a day later doing street stuff it starts making a nice quooshing noise and i had no damping
That was bad enough but it took Mojo (UK Importer) 3 weeks to sort it out when they promised a 7 day turn around.
Similar Products Used:Shockworks (piss poor) none lasted more than 6 months, no races and general street riding (no tricks ect)
Bike Setup:SCB Bullit, DH Kit, read my review of that.
Bottom Line:Well if it lasts it'll be good, this ones lasted 4 months with no problems so if it goes again within the next 8 at least it'll be a warrenty job. What worries me is shelling out £300 UKP for a new one after that, Fox have a good name but everyone I know who has one has had a blow up or blow out at one time or another, that just makes me mad that they can supply such a poor product on the best bikes in the world and get away with it, even Peat, Warner and Volloiz use other shocks! nuff said.
Dont despair if you get one do to fox what i did to shockworks use the warranty over and over and over again and eventually it'll be right.

Bottom Line:I have 2 of these shocks, the 2.25" stroke one that came with the Bullit, and a 2.75" stroke one that I got to increase the travel. Both of them rock perfromance wise, although the original shorter one made a slight knocking noise on the switch from compression to rebound which never went away (didn't affect the performance at all though). The 2.75 " shock is perfect though and it transforms the Bullit, you just need to get a longer set of bushings for the shaft end of the shock and take the black sliding adjuster out. If you have a Bullit, this is a really good upgrade - speak to your shock dealer, they should be able to help you out (Mojo if you are in the U.K - speak to Chris - he sorted mine out). A 400lb sping on the longer shock is comparable to the stock 500lb spring on the shorter shock for bottoming resistance, but way plusher.

And the bushings or reducers or whatever they call them creak like crazy. I had to replace it with bronze bushings. Mine is a 99 model which was the first year. Maybe the 2000's are better. I'm getting a coil.

Strengths:Sweet adjustability and user defined settings make it one hell of a rear shock.
Weaknesses:It didn't come in Yellow?
Undetermined long-term reliability
Makes my Manitou's look bad
Similar Products Used:Risse Terminator
RockShox Whatever
Bike Setup:Brodie Libido, full custom.
Bottom Line:If you love to tinker then this would be the one for you. No longer will you have to set your shock for the ride and hope you don't hit an extreme. I already find myself cranking it up to the point of near lockout for long annoying ride to the top, just so I can scream back down with my trust in my new Vanilla RC. Anything from washboards to the big hits this shock handles with ease. You wont be dissapointed.

Bottom Line:I would HIGHLY recommend getting one of these shocks. They work great, have easy adjusments, look cool, and can handle ANYTHING. I have riddin from road to 5' drops and never had a problem.
GO GET ONE. I have mine set up with 3.5-5" travel.
I give the shock 10 chillies.

WHAT!!! They only go up to FIVE chillies. FINE!!!! It gets all FIVE chillies!!!!!! GO RIDE :)

Strengths:sensitive tuneability; good looks; inexpensive to switch coils (about $25), so you can fine tune your spring rate to the particular riding you're doing that day
Weaknesses:coil occasionally rubs against damping body. oh well
Similar Products Used:rs sid, rs coupe deluxe, fox float
Bike Setup:santa cruz bullit w/jr. t, hayes, rhyno lites
Bottom Line:this is by far the best shock i have ever used. the tuneability is phenomenal (you can radically change the feel of your suspension while moving on the trail). even when it bottoms, the elastomer keeps it from feeling too harsh. i have absolutely no problems with this shock, and would recommend it to anyone with full suspension, regardless of application. i've fiddled with air shocks before and they are such a pain in the ass. go with coils, they're worth the extra half pound.

Bike Setup:
Rocky Mountain Element T.O. (LTD) with a VOTEC GS4 up front.
Bottom Line:Very light shock, it weighs 242 grams (lighter than a SID rear shock, according to my LBS). The lack of adjustable negative spring would seem very objectionable, but the shock is very supple over small bumps, so you won't need that. It does have a negative spring, but it's not adjustable. The shock is also very easy to open, so cleaning is a snap. I don't use the lock-out lever very much, but it is a useful option (especially when trying to convince die-hard hardtailers that FS is the way to go).

Bottom Line:

MY lbc hooked me up with a sweet deal for a fox shock swap from RX to RC. The shock is awsome, o so plush (like most fox coil shocks) i run mine w/the compression all the way open for better sensitivity. though you can cose it down when well free riding for a chance on up hills. You could use it if you were a heavyer rider as well to controll the compession rate of the shock. Be aware if you close down the the compression enough and hit some thing hard enough than you my blow a valve an that could spell serious trouble (my fear.) I give the shock a well....13 chilies. what the Hell! guess i'll have to settle for 5 chilies.
