Strengths: Hi The shock came with the raven I got.(end up paying $600 importation tax) but thats another story. Anyway I have it almost 4 years at this stage. the the conditions are muddy here the 1st thing i did when I git it was to put a piece of tube secured with a reuseable cable tye over it to try and extend the life of the seals, judging but the previous review it seems to have worked. however the bushings (where the shock connects to the frame ) are begining to develope some play. I may sent it to tim flooks to see it it can be saved :-) http://www.tftunedshox.com/home/
Weaknesses: If it had a remote lockout it would be a great shock
Bottom Line:
cant complain after 4 years. the previous mail memtioned a slurping sound. this is due to the oil "cavatating" , fancy word for fizzing. I am getting than too, its the shocks way of telling you, change my oil please :-)

Strengths: This shock came on my bike ('97 Klein Mantra Race -- Pre-Trek) I couldn't help thinking how nice it *looked* on the bike... but that's about it.
Weaknesses: Worked great for the first year, started making a sucking noise on rebound the second year... the third year it began to slowly leak oil until I couldn't stand it anymore. Fox wouldn't even touch the shock, so that's teh end of that. I can't really thrash my bike, seing that I'm only 125lbs... so there's no reason it should have failed like that... ah well.
Bottom Line:
Bottom line is, if you buy a used bike with this shock on it (and it's still working), be prepared to reaplace it very soon. Fox won't want to help you. Don't waste your time and money on these things... buy a Cane Creek for 1/2 the price and recieve their excellent customer service as well.
Similar Products Used: Cane Creeks (AD 10/12... much better IMHO)

Strengths: It makes a cushy ride.
Weaknesses: The quality of the product, the subsequent required rebuildings, the attitude of Fox.
Bottom Line:
The bottom line? This shock sux, and has required 3 rebuildings even with my wimpy riding style. We don't jump it, and ride pretty conservatively and it leaks.
After 3 messages left at Fox, we called again and finally got a live person. Now, Fox says they can't rebuild it AT ALL (no parts available) and we have to replace the unit with a shock from another manufacturer.
Personally? I think this hitech stuff is killing us and our world. I wish I wouldn't have bought a bike with a shock! I really hope people look past the "coolness" and hitech of things, and realize that old hardtail worked just dandy with a polymer seat post and polymer front shocks.

Strengths: When it is working well you can rally dial in what feels just right. Good easy adjustment capability and it holds it's settings for 6 mo or more.
Weaknesses: 4 yrs and 4 times back to the factory to fix a seal leak in which oil leaks into the air chamber. That is too many times.
Bottom Line:
This is a good shock for 1998. I don't think I would recommend that anyone buing a used Klein Mantra Comp keep this for a rear shock unless they don't mind the down time while it goes back to the factory to be fixed (2 to 3 week process). There have got to be lighter and more durable products today. I would buy the bike again.

Strengths: its a nice color it looks nice
Weaknesses: um, ok, it leaked a little oil on me (kinda my fault though, jumped it relentlessly) and i asked if i could get it rebuilt at my local shop, they said i would prolly take 3 to 4 months, costing me over $100. so i said no, because it was in the middle of summer, prime time for riding. BAD FOX- bad customer service is leaking slowly it is ticking like a time bomb until it blows out
Bottom Line:
its a nice shock, i will admit its high maintanence, and the price is not worth it anymore, with cane-creek pumping out shocks at the same quality for about half the price. I dont care were its made (unless its made in afgahn) so long as it works. Stuff made in the USA usually does cost more, and is not always the better buy. so as soon as i get $200 im gettin a AD-8. Fox doesnt suck, it just p¡ssed me off to hear that it would take 3 to 4 months at my expense, when it was mainly the products own fault. only 3 poo's, unless they fix my shock and rebuild it 4 FREE.

Strengths: This shock has now endured four years of abuse and neglect. It looks like a lot of people have had problems w/this shock. I on the other hand haven't even bothered to grease it this summer and I haven't put air in it since last summer. I really abuse things because I weigh 200lbs. and this shock has held up well.
Weaknesses: apparently customer service, although I haven't had a need for it
Bottom Line:
The judy XC that also came stock on my bike was toast only 18 months after I bought my bike. The fox shock has not only held up but it has also performed well.
Bike Setup: 97 Klein Mantra Race full xtr rockshox sid up front and old faithful (stock alps 5r) out back.

Strengths: It works out of the box.
Weaknesses: It breaks after 6 months, Fox's tech. support has anyone noticed how bad this company is operating, it is totally unexeptable. Their products suck I bought a Fox RC and I didn't pay full price and it was not used. my friend got it on his bike and took it off and sold it to me some friend you say, me too!
Bottom Line:
I hate Fox!!!! YOu know what I hate more than a bad product a company that doesn't care! Still making 80-120$ making money off every other costumer every 6 months is not a way to make profits, sure you make money short term. What about when everyone shrieks in every bike shops at the accidental slip of the name FOX! Will they make profits than? Rock Shocks had problems years ago with the top caps of their forks popping off, what did they do? They sure as hell didn't start charging everyone for repairs. They sent out kits to dealers to fix the forks for FREE!!!!! I dont see that with fox and something is obviously wrong with their shocks.

Strengths: It works fine when the proper pressure is in it. rebound control really works well......
Weaknesses: shock not serviceable by anyone but fox. and very expensive at that.
Bottom Line:
Purchased the shock used when building the bike from cannondale rep/friend. Paid $75 for it. after about 200 miles the alps5 began to lose air pressure. I could pump it up to 200psi and within two days it wouldbe down to 50psi. I contact Fox, who told me to send it in as there is no consumer rebuild kit for it. they said the average cost to do it was from $65 to $130 and turn around time could be three weeks or so. I need my bike running, so I looked on Ebay and just found a new Float R that will fit the bike for $76.01 (my winning bid)with free shipping. Screw it. As soon as I swap them out there will be an ALPS-5 FOR sale on Ebay. Sorry Fox, I love your products but twenty minutes worth of work and a couple of .20 cent o-rings and three weeks of down time is not worth $65 bucks! Not when I can just log on and buy the latest version for about the same cost. Geoff Fox, when I met you in 1980 you said you were "all about trying to give racers competitive equipment at prices they could afford". That was then, this is now. And now is all about selling Fox t-shirts in the mall to people that wouldnt know a shock if you stuck it in.... So are you a T-shirt company that dabbles in suspension or vice-versa.

Strengths: Works well for where i ride. Haven't had any seals leak.
Weaknesses: Crack developed above upper mounting bolt.
Bottom Line:
After 3 years of riding this bike and no problems with the shock, a crack developed above the upper mounting bolt. The bike shop where i purchased the bike, said that the shock was too old to be covered under any kind of warranty and tried to sell me a new shock or a new bike. I contacted fox via e-mail, and they returned my message the next day. I sent in the shock for repairs, expecting to spend 80 bucks on a rebuild. About one week later, I recieved the shock back and to my surprise, Fox replaced the entire upper shock body for free. They only charged me 46 dollars for a rebuild and put a new sticker on it. Great customer service. Hopefully, I'll have good luck with the shock after the rebuild. Apparently, others haven't been too happy with fox. If this shock goes bad, then i'll probably look into a cane creek.

Strengths: Worked good while it lasted.
Weaknesses: I don't jump, I weigh 160 pounds, and last weekend, while I was getting ready to ride, I found a big puddle of oil. I was told that it would have to be shippped out and repaired, at a cost of about $200. I'll be buying a cane creek to replace this junk.
Bottom Line:
I am uninterested in purchasing any other products from Fox. This shock blew prematurely and with no warning. It screwed up my weekend, and I wouldn't recommend this shock to anyone.

Strengths: Laterally stiff
Weaknesses: "Blows" way too easily
Bottom Line:
20 minutes into my very first ride on this bike I blew the Fox Alps 5 rear shock! Although Fox repaired the shock for freee, it still took three weeks turnaround time! Imagine the feeling you get blowing the shock on your $4k rig on its first ride! 2 years later it blows again, on a landing from a not so high drop-off (4 ft.) only to cause my frame to crack! Intense was really awesome with their warranty service, considering they don't produce this frame anymore. Fox charged me $75.00 for the service! THIS SHOCK SUCKS SOOOOOOOOOO BAD!

Strengths: Good smooth action. Reliable. A pleasant feel. Has that cool "schuck" sound on rebound that makes everybody in a crowd turn and look! :D
Weaknesses: None except it blew out when I left it in my dorm over christmas break and they turned the heat on full blast, closed all windows and we're on the third floor. FOR 2.5 WEEKS!!!
Bottom Line:
This shock has been very good to me and very reliable over the years. I have had to pump it up seasonally but that was always due to significant temperature drops and the fact that my bike stays inside my room, out of the weather. Nothing unusual. I am trying to get housing to cover the cost of replacement/repair. No worries, I thoroughly enjoyed this shock. A much better feel than those pogo-stick coil overs, but the new floats do seem to be an improvement. Not a bad design at all for its hey-day!

Strengths: Supple. Holds air securely. Attractive golden color.
Weaknesses: Mount bushing beginning to wear. Odd (7.25") length.
Bottom Line:
There is nothing wrong with this shock. I am over 225 lbs. of speed and romance and that shock has not ever let me down. It is much more supple than the Alps 4 (which was also very reliable). I don't know how others can get a faulty shock. Either theirs was made on a late Friday afternoon, or mine was made on a Wednesday morning. I stress the shock much more than the lighter folk and the shock is located in the worst possible location. Vanity prevents me from covering up the shock, and I've gotten it so muddy that you could not even tell if it was a shock. All I do is wipe it down after every ride. I have NEVER lost air or oil. With my frame, I will probably never buy another shock. The Alps 5 rules (until someone else comes along with a shock as reliable or the same length). What's this I hear about Fox customer service? I may be finding out soon.

Strengths: Light weight, easy to adjust.
Weaknesses: Need to be tweeked. 1) Air valve on some models have not been screwed down far enough. This will cause the air to leak out if the cap is screwed on.
2) You'll need a great pump to accurately control the air pumped into the shock and disconnect without losing air. I have found the Risse pump and valve adaptor as the only product that works on air shocks and fork. The valve adaptor allows only 1cc of air lose upon removal. When the valve adaptor is installed over the shock it will contact the internal valve on the shock and push the spring open. This allows very accurate internal air pressure readings. This means no more inaccurate reading because the pump have to overcome the pressure of the spring retaining the shock air valve or dirty stuck air valve.
Bottom Line:
Great air shocks need great pumps. I still have not figured out why bike makers, air shock and air fork manufacturer cannot ship a good working pump with the bikes. When a bike use air shocks and forks; typically these are not the low end products. We are paying good money for these products. Why do they not include a good pump? Would any of you buy a car with no spare tire, no jack, no tire iron, etc.? We expect more from an economy car than these high end bikes! This industry bull must stop and consumers should demand more. This is why I cannot give the best rating for these products. After 4 pumps and other related products to make these shocks reliable..... UGGGgg
