Date Reviewed: April 5, 2007
Favorite Trail:anthills
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $1800.00
Purchased At:Bike Barn
Strengths:This thing awesome! It has unbelieveable travel and is extra soft on the areas! Wish I would have bought it years ago.
Weaknesses:Trying to fit it to my TREK Y26! I did some engineering to fit it to the frame with the frame bolts but what a mess. The ones that come with it do not fit the frame so use your old one's.
Similar Products Used:Fox
Bike Setup:TREK Y26, Duke Front Shocks, Acera Shimano gear, Salsa, Easton
Bottom Line:This is an awesome addition to your bike for those long hard rides! I ride hard and long and don't have to worry if it will stick to the bottom. It doesn't!!!!

Date Reviewed: April 5, 2002
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Purchased At:Came with bike
Strengths:Good travel, good rebound
Weaknesses:Structuraly weak
Bike Setup:Brody Reactor with dual-crown Judy XL fork, Shimano XT derailers and brakes, Shimano LX crankset, Mavic 221 rims, Axiom Amoeba riser and handlebar.
Bottom Line:It was good while it lasted, but after one season of not-that-rough riding, the top seal broke and I lost all my damping. Now it bounces like a pogo-stick.

Favorite Trail:all of them
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $25.00
Purchased At:friend
Strengths:Climbs like a champ. Takes this 8ft drop I do all the time. This shock is six years old has no problem and I punish it every day.
Weaknesses:you have to prelode the spring to much. I wish it had more tavle.
Bike Setup:Diamondback V-link. with custom made billet extentions for more travle.
Bottom Line:It make for a good trale bike. I would recomend this to a light weight rider who is on there game. If you are over 160lbs replace the ciol spring with one out your car. If the shock is to heavy for you, you must be a pro xc racer. If you are Joe Blow free rider the extra grams just do not matter.

Favorite Trail:Noble cyn
Duration Product Used:3 months
Purchased At:Bernie's Bike Shop
Strengths:Good damping control and good travel. It is good on climbing up hills without taking all your energy.
Weaknesses:To short of a spring. If it had a bigger spring it could get a lot more travle for your money.
Bottom Line:A really good shock that doesent need very meany fix ups. It could do better on spring size dut that it. Overall it performs really good up hill.

Submitted by Hank Chinaski a Cross Country Rider from Hank, Chinaski, Hank
Date Reviewed: November 24, 2001
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Purchased At:came w/bike
Strengths:Plush, adjustable rebound
Weaknesses:OEM setup was bad - see below
Similar Products Used:Risse air/oil
Bike Setup:Mongoose NX 8.3
Bottom Line:My bike always sounded like it was coming apart on bumpy downhills & it was nearly bucking me off on large hits - until I figured out the shock was topping out. I replaced the very thin (like water) fluid in the shock w/ some 10 w motorcycle shock oil, & now the bike is quiet & the shock is very plush & consistent through its travel.
I can't imagine that the more expensive "upgrades" to this shock are much better, because this shock really works well for XC riding. I've hit a lot of big bumps with this thing, & it keeps on asking for more.

Submitted by Ian a Cross Country Rider from Rotorua New Zealand
Date Reviewed: August 2, 2001
Favorite Trail:Rotorua
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:I have the 2000 model its very stiff but can be easily softened, easy to adjust, good for cross country riding, good rebound. I can do climb hills without it bouncing around
then go down hill and get an exellent ride
Weaknesses:None for the type of riding I do except that would like a lockout but you can't have everything.
Similar Products Used:Rock shock delux rear shock which I think is not that good as it's to soft.
Bike Setup:Moongoose NX 8.3
Bottom Line:I think this shock is exellent value for money, you can get better shocks than this but you also pay a lot more

Submitted by Al a Downhiller from Oxnard, CA
Date Reviewed: July 19, 2001
Favorite Trail:Emma Long MX Park
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:Cycle Scene
Strengths:well.. it came on my V-link back in '96. It has never leaked oil, though it's heavy as all get out. rebound and compression suck.. have to run a lot of preload to keep from bottoming out
Weaknesses:umm well.. it's not dampened very well.. i'm gonna get either a fox air vanilla RC or a stratos helix shortly..
Similar Products Used:RST Delta HL, speed springs, slick honey
Bike Setup:'96 vlink, 5" travel linkage (custom - email me for one if ya want it)
Bottom Line:well it's good as a OEM el cheapo shock.. a step up from the POS on the murray FS bikes you see at walmart. after 4,000 miles offroad with decent use the nut on the link finally snapped off the piston rod.. 3 flamin chilis as indestructible POS

Submitted by Vince a Weekend Warrior from Palm Beach Gardens, FL
Date Reviewed: January 15, 2001
Duration Product Used:3 months
Strengths:The unit is simple and performs it's intended function for a shock in it's class.
Weaknesses:I weigh over 200 lbs and the shock has 2 problems:
1. The spring tension has to be set extremely tight that --
2. it overcomes the stock unadjustable rebound valve dampening.
Bottom Line:OK shock to use in a light duty situation or if you're light in weight (130-170 lbs). Sharp impacts rebound with abrupt force almost throwing me on a few occasions.

However, I do note that this IS an entry level shock and cannot be compared to the expensive units.

Submitted by Mika a Weekend Warrior from Finland
Date Reviewed: July 26, 2000
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:A basic rear shock with very effective rebound adjustement (from no rebound at all to almost lockout). Affordable. Spring rate was suitable for me. Works as promised.
Weaknesses:A bit heavy, but so are all coil shocks. Check that you have the coil centered around the shock body if you have carried your bike and moved coil by unintentionally - it might not be centered and will rub your shock body and scratch it (if that happens, you'll hear it).
Similar Products Used:Stratos, Cane Creek
Bike Setup:Orange X-1 Pro (Pace in front, XT&LX parts)
Bottom Line:Replaced the original shock of my bike because it blew with this Fastrax RL rear shock. A good basic rear shock comparable to basic coil shocks from RockShox and other brands with rebound adjustement.

Favorite Trail:Bromont
Duration Product Used:6 months
Strengths:I guess it is cheap...no maintenance
Weaknesses:No adjustments, heavy, weak and NAME
Similar Products Used:Fox Vanilla R, Cana Creek AD-10
Bike Setup:Mongoose 8.1, modified to make a bomb out of it...
Bottom Line:I don't know if you can buy that aftermarket. If you can, DON'T! If it came stock on your bike, change it before it blows up!

Date Reviewed: August 6, 1999
Favorite Trail:
Amethyst Brook
Duration Product Used:
3 months
Strengths:
Quick (good when going fast)
Light for a coil
Reliable
Weaknesses:
Way underdamped
No damping adjustability
Similar Products Used:
Fox Vanilla
Fox Alps 5r
Fox Air Vanilla
Stratos Strada Pro
Stratos Helix
Rock Shox Deluxe
Girvin/GT ODS
Bike Setup:
Diamondback V-Link 3.0 (same exact frame as Jm reviewed, I bought it from him)
Bottom Line:Not good for riders over 135 pounds, since it is way underdamped it will bottom out on big hits. It works pretty well on fast DH but bottoms on drops. Its hard to find a point on the preload that is plush but won't bottom out alot.I'm replacing it with a Stratos Strada Pro in a couple days, along with an XMO up front.Since this shock probably only costs about $75 to buy new, and it is reliable and, dispite its lack of advanced features, not THAT bad... I'll give it three well-done enchiladas.

Submitted by Jm a Cross-Country Rider from Ok
Date Reviewed: May 16, 1999
Favorite Trail:
12MOH
Duration Product Used:
2 Years
Strengths:
Light.....um...light?
Weaknesses:
Not enough rebound damping, not ajustable.
Similar Products Used:
Fox Vanilla R, Rockshox Superdelux, Risse Terminator a few others I can't think of right now.
Bike Setup:
Diamondback Vlink 3.0
Bottom Line:Fairly lame shock overall. No ajustability, the damnping sucked for me, cause I'm heavier, so on low speed impacts it tended to rebound pretty wildly, threatening to throw me from my bike. It was ok at fast speed and climbing. Two starts, one for lightness, one for high speed preformance. Needs ajustablility, more rebound damping, Any ajustable shock is an upgrade from this.

Strengths:
Cheap.
Compression damping adjuster is effective.
Replacement was free.
Weaknesses:
No rebound damping adjuster.
Similar Products Used:
RS Super Deluxe
Bike Setup:
Fastrax F-1, RS Judy SL
Bottom Line:Great Shock for the price. I blew the shock once after two years of use. Wish the adjuster was for rebound rather than compression.

Submitted by Mark Swarbrick a Weekend Warrior from West Sussex UK
Date Reviewed: April 22, 1999
Favorite Trail:
Whiteways nr Arundel
Duration Product Used:
2 Years
Strengths:
It has only just broken now after a year of hard hard thrashing on the Coyote DH1
Weaknesses:
The oil ring blew
Similar Products Used:
Fox, Rockshox
Bike Setup:
Coyote DH-1 full hope discs dh spec..
Bottom Line:I thrashed the shock for a year on my coyote. Only after 1 year has an oil seal gone which was easily replaced under guarantee. The valving is spot on and the spring rate really nice. It is definately the third best under fox and rockshox and is so so much cheaper...
