Date Reviewed: April 28, 2005
Favorite Trail:Roads + Off Road
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Big spring.. Can dampen big drops easily.
Stiff and solid, holds and fastens on to your bike like glue.
Weaknesses:Looks could be nicer, big spring doesnt show much fashion sense. Adjuster cap are wayyy to much adjustments for 1/4 of a turn. Doesnt dampen small humps.
Similar Products Used:None.
Bike Setup:Progear 2005, Shimano System, DNM Fireball rear shock, RST T-4 Fork , Progear saddle, Modified handgrips, Promax disc brakes, Grunge guards for both derailluers.
Bottom Line:Great entry level rear shock. For those just starting it, this should be a great improvement. For those city recreational riders, shock works just fine and just for you. =)

Submitted by Kyle a Racer from Austin TX
Date Reviewed: March 18, 2003
Favorite Trail:Rocky Hill Ranch
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $10.00
Purchased At:Ebay
Strengths:Big spring, better than something that is broken? Hey I'm trying real hard here, alright.
Weaknesses:No dampening at all, can you say bounce?
Similar Products Used:Fox vanilla coil, Marin Shockworks, and some other DNM that came stock on an old Mongoose (threw it away because I thought is was broke, but now I learned that it didn't have any dampening to begin with, just like this Fireball)
Bike Setup:Marin Alpine Trail
Bottom Line:hmm, do not use with Unified rear triangle design frames, (bounce) unless you really like pogosticks, which I do, but you can't race with `em. (wow, theres an idea) The only reason this shock gets by at all is because the spring is so stiff that it doesn't need much dampening. I got this thing incredibly cheap off of ebay. I was short on money and my shockworks broke on my Marin, so I bought this, and it got me through a couple of races now with less than desirable results. (boing)

Favorite Trail:-
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $80.00
Purchased At:came with boulder ds
Strengths:It did'n fall apart
Weaknesses:the spring is too weak. It will even bottom out on a 2 foot drop off. the bushing are crappy plastic, the shock wobbles all over the place, no dampening and it squeaks
Similar Products Used:-
Bike Setup:giant boulder ds
Bottom Line:i recemmond not buying a bike with this shock on it because you will only have to replace it. when ever you go over a bump over 10cm you will be bucked off your seat. it would be half decent if it didn't wobble so much. never buy a shock like this unless your just starting off.

Favorite Trail:Fisher Creek Trail
Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:It came on my bike
Strengths:Its cheap reliable regardless of what others say easy to adjust
Weaknesses:its heavy and has like 4" of travel, which is not much even for xc
Similar Products Used:some fox vanilla r and rc
Bottom Line:It is like a great shock for the price, other than the amount of travel it has. It does not squeak and it requires almost no maintnence, it's made out of sturdy aluminum and it comes wtih a 650 lb spring and mud does not clog it up.

Weaknesses:No rebound adj. Squeaks through the nylon bushes although I'm working on that.

Favorite Trail:- anywhere -
Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:Stock on Giant Boulder DS
Strengths:Its strong, very easy to adjust..all you do is twist.
Weaknesses:NOT ENOUGH TRAVEL.
Bottom Line:I would think that if they gave us a larger coil... say with perhaps an inch more travel, it would be the ideal rear shock for entry level to intermediate bike riders.

Overall quite good.

Bike Setup:VERY MODIFIED TO DH SPEC
Bottom Line:THIS IS JUST BAD. TOPS OUT SQUEEKS ALL THE TIM(WD 40 EVERY DAY TO STOP IT). NO DAMPING, MAKES SOME STRANGE NOISES PLUS WHEN IT REBOUNDS IT SPITS YOU OUT OF THE SEAT. HITTING BIG BUMPS CREATES A LOUD "CRACK" SOUND. ABSORBS SMALL BUMPS BUT NOT BIG ONES.AVOID

Similar Products Used:Many different ones.
Bike Setup:Apollo ldx 2.2
RST 321 forks
RST disk

Bottom Line:A pretty good shock when adjusted right. The easiest way to adjust it is to use a ragor riding glove. The only really bad thing is that anoying squek but this is easily fixed if you can be bothered. Suitable for any rider as long as they don't way a lot.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Purchased At:DNM DV-6 Fireball
Strengths:Well, the shock if adjusted properly does great. It does not bottom out unless you have not made a good adjustment.
Weaknesses:Constant, brain renching, nerve racking squeak that even WD-40 can not fix
Bottom Line:This shock is not given a whole lot of credit for its ridability from other riders. I myself ride a lot harder than most people. this shock does decent for the price.
BUT THE SQUEAK IT GETS AFTER RIDING IT TOO LONG IS ENOUGH TO MAKE A PERSON SUICIDAL.;P
if you are looking for a good shock that will last a long time with out having to mess with it, this is not your shock.

Purchased At:Cycle Works
Strengths:even though it bottoms easily, it can withstand a lot of pounding. i do drops with it and i bottoms every time, but i haven't had any problems with it. i holds up. could be good for cross country, but not for anything else.
Weaknesses:bottoms out very easily. i don't weigh that much, and i can bottom it very easily. can't take drops or jumps, and sometimes trails. i am destroying it doing the drops and stairs that i do. very cheap shock. can't loosen or tighten the shock very easily after riding. the bumper does nothing. the coil won't come off at all. not for anyone who does anything but riding around with their family.
Similar Products Used:vanilla r, vanilla rc, which are way better.
Bike Setup:Daimondback XTS-2, Z5 Bombers, LX, XT
Bottom Line:if the shock isn't already on your bike, don't buy it seperately. can't take anything smoothly.

Shifters: Shimano Acera
Cranks: Sugino Board Beam
Bottom Line:This is an updated review.
Well, I've been using this shock for quite a long time, I read other reviews about this shock and I think this shock really belongs to a department store bike.
Ths coil spring is way too small but that makes up for the adjustbility. The ring that is at the end of the spring was a little bit snapping. I seriously don't think this shock is good for anything even thou it came on a downhill bike, it is alright for some cross-country riding sometimes.
Too make up for all those weaknesses: The best rebound ever
The most adjustbility shock ever even not much travel because if you are over the age of 9, this shock is not suitable at all, NOT good for an upgrade what so ever.

Strengths:The amount of travel for my weight. Better than riding rigid.
Weaknesses:I haven't found any yet, but I could see heavier people bottoming out. I weigh 150 lbs.
Similar Products Used:I ridden 1 other bike that had a Fox Vanilla shock. I can't tell a difference.
Bike Setup:Mongoose XR-500, 24 speed, ballistic front shock.
Bottom Line:I've been over some steep and bumpy stuff so far, and haven't had any complaints, but again I think the low amount of travel wouldn't be good for someone who was fat.

real gd as it's reall soft
too bumpy if u're heavy (feels like riding a horse)
too little for the travel but it's enough for medium riders
not too suitable for DH (as i've said, too short)
would be best if include a adjuster
but it's COOL for mi~! go get it for a upgrade~!
tips: for a even smoother ride...add 10 ml of oil on it and it's rocking~!!! (suggested for fun-riding~!)

Bottom Line:Good quality for low price, nice piece for the weekend biker. Compares good to other models with higher prices.
Had a lot of joy from this one...Very plush, soft ride.
The downer is that you have to use some kind of tool to tighten(adjust) the shox. Not good for on-the-ride changes.

Bottom Line:I have the DNM DV-6B on a Pacific YX8500. So far, the shock seems pretty good. It'd be better if it had an adjustable rebound dampener. But it's nice for the price. Wish I could find some specs on it, so if anyone knows of any please e-mail me. Other than that, I may upgrade to something with more travel...when this one breaks of course! 4 wild haired chili's for a good inexpensive product. I'd give it 5, but no adjustable dampener.
