No Negative travel. If air pressure set to where there is no sag, the shock tops out over stutter bumps and sounds awful. | | Similar Products Used: | None | | Bike Setup: | 97 Dakar Team, Full XT 9sp except for WTB wheelset, tires and headset. Also Salsa stuff and a Trico seat | | Bottom Line: | It came with my Dakar Team frame. I like it and have tinkered with pressure, rebound dampening and compression dampening a lot to get it right. Without extra rebound dampening, I felt like it was going to rebound me right over the bars. No problems in over a year of use. A coil shock would be more responsive on small bumps, but I'll keep it until it blows up. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Since it is a progressive type suspension it can suck up small modulations AND big hits without bottoming out. Now that I think of it once I set it up it has never bottomed out, unlike my old Indy SL... but thats another review. After a year I have had no problems and no leaks. I would strongly recommend getting a Lizard skin cover to keep the seal clean. I love the fact that by adding or subtracting a few psi's I've got the perfect set up for Sunday morning hang overs or after work road races(did I just say road out loud??). Overall I'm very pleased with performance. My only concern is what I've read about blown seals, a 10 mile walk home will take the enjoyment out of any ride. I've had my AD-10 for about 2 months now on my Klein Manta. It was a great upgrade from the non-adjustabel Fox Vanilla that came stock. The Fox was overdamped, which was ok at 1st, coming from a hardtail background. I put on the AD-10 to save weight (220 gms vs 500 gms measured!) but then immediately noticed that the suspension was a lot more active. Increasing the damping could get it to feel a lot like the Fox, but smoothing. Interestly enough, the increased activity caused the bike to phantom shift, something it had never done before. I found that the cable housings were about 1/4 to short, a common Klein problems. Never noticed this with the stiff FOX!MBR always complains about stiction, but I really didn't notice any. I can feel it working even on the small ripples you find on newly finished surface streets - what more do you want? One little detail - they recommended that no lube be used on the two pivot point bearing because it might attract dust. I followed this, but after a month started getting a loud creaking from the suspension. Taking the shock off a lubbing the pivot bearing with White Lightening (so as to not attack dirt) cured this.Based on my riding and their scheduled maintainance, the shock should be rebuilt (at home!) about every two years - pretty good. I lose about 1 PSI a week so far, so I can go several weeks without topping off.Overall, I rate this shock very highly. Hope it hold up. | Overall Rating: |

the fox vanilla shock on my 1998 Klein Mantra comp was under sprung for my relatively agressive riding style and 190lb weight. I also wanted damping adjustment. The AD 10 I put on changed the quality of suspention travel more than I could have imagined. It was like night to day. I use aprox. 205 psi in the shock and it gives tons of plush no sticktionless travel. Any one with this bike and my aproximate weight would be a fool not to make this upgrade. ive used the shock in mud thick enough to stop the bike and have had no seal problems. I would recomend getting a pump shock (shrader) because I do add air every three days or so just to make sure it is at the proper psi. The shock can also be taken apart to change the nature of the shock from a rising rate to a falling rate to a linear rate. This was the best upgrade to my bike I have made. | Overall Rating: |

I have a 97 Y bike with about 13,000 miles on it and have a AD10 which has served me very well. The Cane Creek was put on about 2 months after I origionally purchased the bike. The reason for this was that I blew the guts out of the origional Fox 5 so I ordered one from Cane Creek. This shock set up was not recommended by the Cane Creek people and the felt very strongly that it would not work well on my bike. The only real problem with this set up to date is a small amount of po-go on long, extended climbs. The vast majority of the po-go can be tuned out by running the shock about 10psi higher the the recommended psi for your weight and by increasing the compression a bit. If your a strong rider with smooth pedal stroke and a Y style frame this setup is definately do-able. Good work Cane Creek and I look forward to using your shock on a full suspension Homegrown I am hoping and planning to build.

Works very well! Ordered as a replacement for the Fox Vanilla on my 1997 Rocky Mountain Element Race. The Fox Vanilla was undersprung and under-damped for my weight of 190lbs. I will send it to Fox for rework and keep it as a spare. Anyway, the AD-10 works perfectly. Have had it in use for about 2 months, so far so good. The key to the perfect air pressure is to know the leverage ratio of your suspension. If you go strictly by the rider weight chart I don't think it will work. In my case it was 20lbs too high. I found the rider weight/leverage ratio chart on the Cane Cane web site and it was much closer to the perfect setting. The shock fit perfectly on my bike. The shock holds air so far. The small adjusting knobs don't bother me because once you have got it dialed in you don't need to play with it that much. Also, the small knobs are neatly tucked out of the way in case you bite it hard you won't snap them off. The AD-10 seems to have infinite adjustability and responds to small medium and large bumps equally well. So far I'm happy with my purchase and recommend this shock. | Overall Rating: |

This is a short term review. I've been using the AD10 on my Klein Mantra for about a month. This shock is great. The damping adjustment does make a difference, though I would have moved the range a little so you could over damp if you wanted to. Performance wise the shock is great. It started out with a little stiction to get the shock moving, but it's loosened up nicely. It takes the really big hits great. It seems to move on the small stuff also, I just don't think I can accurately review small bump action because of my suspension design. The shock has held it's pressure perfectly. The only thing I might do is decrease the inner volume a little to give it a sharper spring rate, but at this point I'm not sure I really want to since it seldom to never bottoms. If I had it to purchase all over again, I would still lay out the $225 Bikeworld.com sold it to me for. By the way, dealer cost with shipping is about $158.00. My box still had a COD tag on it. If anyone has any questions feel free to e-mail me. Now if I could only get into the 24lb range. | Overall Rating: |

NOTE: Review is for the AD-10 After over one hundred miles on this shock I'm prepared to make a few comments regarding it's functionality on my Santa Cruz Heckler. First, I'm impressed and although I had no mechanical problems with my RockShox SD I feel that this is a better product. The way that you can vary the psi, the compression damping and the rebound damping allow you to fine tune the ride to the trail better than I ever imagined. I can crank in the compression damping and virtually eliminate the slight granny gear pogoing of my Heckler. Sprints in the middle ring and climbs in the granny are better than I ever imagined. A real and definite difference not just accolades because I paid good money for the thing. Paradoxically, while it seems to eliminate pogoing it is soooo plush when you really need it. The only problem is that it needs clickers because the compression/rebound dampers are impossible to adjust without a hex wrench. And of course it weights about ONE HALF what the RockShox did. Four flaming dead horses for it -- would go five but for the difficulty in adjusting on the trail. | Overall Rating: |

Actually, this review is for an AD-10 which is an upgraded AD-8. The main difference between the AD-8 and AD-10 is a quadruple lip seal and a knurled aluminun ring that used to be plastic. Both of these are to make the shock more durable.Regardless, the proof-is-in-the-pudding. This is one tastey pudding. I installed the AD-10 on a Klein Mantra Comp. I had a steel sprung Fox on before. The difference is amazing. The AD-10 is MUCH more supple and compliant over bumps. Trees root that used to kick the back end around become little blips. Biggers hits, like going over logs are sweet. My butt is happy and my lines in corners are smooth.BTW, I have only had it a few days. I'll post a follow up later about reliability.

You can run it with less sag and it's still more plush than the Alps. You can also tune it to different types of terrain ie. stiffer for fast smooth terrain or plusher for the rough nasty stuff. Wish I had replaced the Rock Shox Super Deluxe with this shock because its as responsive yet has none of the bounciness found with coil/oil.Great shock! | Overall Rating: |
