Date Reviewed: February 12, 2001
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $2.00
Purchased At:Local Nutrition Store
Strengths:Taste, texture
Weaknesses:A bit brittle, i.e. breaks or squashes easily when packed in a jersey pocket
Similar Products Used:Clif, Power, Odawalla, numerous other muesli, protein and meal replacement bars
Bike Setup:1998 Rocky Mountain Vertex TO
Bottom Line:The best energy bar in the market. Great flavour, easy to chew and digest. I like Clif, too, but UAWUE are much less dense. Shame only that their distribution is limited. If all those sad people who buy up their Powerbars at the supermarket knew what they are missing ...

I like Clif bars too but overall I'd rate these bars higher.
For a trip that would include the possibility of damage to my improperly packed luggage I'd take some Powerbars (banana) because even though they taste bad they don't break. But for the othe 99% of my life, UAWYE bars are the best thing out there.

Bottom Line:Our Dining Hall at Cornell received a couple of boxes as a promotion, so I snagged some of each flavor. I first tried one as an energy booster to keep me studying, and it worked, but, more importantly, it tasted good. On the bike, it was easy to get down, and keep down. Including the information that the bars are Kosher in their advertising was a great idea, because it let me and some of my friends who bike (we oly eat Kosher) know about the product. There aren't many Kosher energy bars out there, so it was a big deal when this came out. Just one point - although the ads say the bars are Parve (not meat or dairy), one flavor (I think it's blueberry) is dairy (something about how they proccess the fruit). A great product and a great company.

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:The way this product suddenly popped-up on the reviews with nothing but glowing praise is somewhat suspicious. Look, I understand if a company is sponsoring your club/team, you're somewhat obligated to say some nice things. But overdoing it in this way ca be a red flag to many. With that being said, I had the opportunity to try a YAWYE bar at the Keyesville Classic this weekend (they gave one away in eac race packet). Not bad. Somewhat tasty. Did it fill me up with energy? I guess. How do you really test that? I'll assume it did since I didn't bonk during the 16 mile race. However, it does NOT taste as good as a Clif Bar or a PR Bar. How do I test that? Well, after I finish a bar, if I want another (hungry or not) then it must taste good. I didn't get that at all with the YAWYE (Apple-something flavor). With the bars mentioned above (Clif, PR, Balance, Steel), I get that almost every time. This bar tastes better than a PowerBar, Harvest, VO2Max, etc. But not up there with the big boys. It's good, but not great. If I had a choice between this and the others (Clif, PR, etc.), I wouldn't choose this one.

I'm a 46 year youngster that often rides with people 20 years younger than myself. In order to hang in there with these spring chickens, I need a bar that fills my energy needs and, swine that I am, fulfills my virtually insatiable apettite. These bars are delicious. Not only do I enjoy eating them on rides(which is easy to do because, unlike many other energy bars, you can actually chew and swallow them), but I often eat them for snacks and desserts. They provide plenty of energy and taste great!!

Like the good doctor at the bottom of the list, I'm a high level road racer (Cat 2), long distance cyclist (Furnace Creek 508 2nd place, Terrible Two double 1st), and life-long athelete. Basically, all standard bars will supply the necessary energy, so the big difference is in your ability to eat it. UR bars are, IMHO, the best tasting bars available, and also the only ones that I can eat easily in a race (especially on cold days). Quality ingredients certainly help. If you want a really good bar, give UR a try.

In terms of taste, definately the best on the market. You Are What You Eat Bars not only give you the energy you need to get through a tough race, but also provides you with the nutrients to stay healthy and energetic. The flavors they have are great, but they should consider expanding their options. Keep up the great work!

I can by these bars by the dozen from my dorm food service courts. At first when I saw the dumb name and amateurish-looking packaging I thought this was another reject product the halls food service was trying to waste our money on. But I tasted it and even though I've never had other energy bars before I must say it was pretty good. Not as good as Pepperidge Farm cookies or anything like that, but pretty good for something supposed to be healthy. I like the peanut butter and blueberry almond flavors the best. Guess I'll be using my meal points to stock up on these babies! Hmmm, some of the posts below look suspiciously like padding on the part of the manufacturers. They sound very similar and don't seem typical of the usual mtbr.com post.

Bottom Line:

Defently the best tasting bar on the market. I am a student and a mountain bike racer with many demands and limited time. The YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT Energy Bars are a great aid to my busy life style and my racing career. Out of all the energy bars on the market these bars are far superior in taste and quality, I would recommend them to anyone. Whether you are an athlete or just a busy, always on the go business person. One of the best characteristics about the bar is that you do not need a gallon of water to wash them down with. They will not leave a pasty aftertaste in your mouth and they are easily digestable. With most energy bars you need to wait a while to digest before exercising but with the YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT Energy bars you can eat and go. They should be commended for a job well done with the recipe of the four great flavors. Blueberry Almond is my favorite, but the chocolate reminds me of my mom's homemade brownie cake.

I don't care what all the reports say -- if an individual is exercising whether it be cycling, aerobics, running, you DO eat more (especially cycling). I've never been a fan of any of the energy bars on the market, in fact, I'd
always just stuff a peanutbutter and jelly sandwich in my jersey pocket rather
than eat any of those 'taste-like-cardboard' bars on the market.... until I tried
the YouAreWhatYouEat bars! These bars are FANTASTIC! They taste like cookies
and yet they are packed with all-natural ingredients and vitamins. Now I won't
go anywhere without one or two of them. They are easy to chew and you don't
need a gallon of water to wash them down with! If you don't try these bars,
you're missing out on the best energy bar on the market!!

I came across URWUE Energy bars when one of the racers on my team picked up a few at a race. Never being a PowerBar/taffy like enjoyer of energy bars I was reluctant to give them a try. Well I finally did, and I was incrediblly surprised!!! There is finally a Energy Bar on the market that digests easily and is actually tastey to eat. Ever flavor is incredible and they really do stay fresh and soft in your jersey pocket! My wife likes the chocolate fudgy while I think the peanut butter is miy favorite. I would suggest giving them a try if your tired of the normal eating condition of what seems to be the industry standard for energy bars. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT is a welcomed product in my gear bag.

This is the best tasting bar I've had. I thought it was tough to beat Cliff chocolate chip/peanut butter until I tasted a UR Fudgy Chocolate. Absolutely the best. The bar is soft and moist, and not grainy or tough to chew. I also enjoy ProMax bars but they melt in warm weather, unlike UR's. These bars get the max rating because they really are damn good.

Bottom Line:

I have raced for about 15 years, and last year I completed the Vail Ultra 100, The Frunace Creek 508 (tandem team), and five double centuries as a stage race. I'm also a California State Time Trial Champion. Needless to say, I have eaten a few bars over the years. The You-Are-What-You Eat bars, even though they are a mouthful just to pronounce, are far and away the best. I ate many, many of them at last years Furnace Creek race, which is an all-night 23 hour plus team race. I got them on the advice of a teammate who is a pro tennis player. I can eat just about anything, and an al-nighter is surely not an eating pleasure-fest, and so i figured what the heck. Well, the bars were teriffic!. Easy, very easy to chew, and very easy to digest. Lots of good flavors, flavors that actually taste diferent. The owner of mu local shop made the guy who is the national sales manager for Clif Bar eat one at the Las Vegas show, and it created quite an effect. Like your grandpa said, though, there is a good and a bad to anything, and with these batr it's bad to carry them in the box in your car -- they disappear at an alarming rate!Dr. Scott Garrison
