NiteRider Rage Older Lights

3.67/5 (6 Reviews)

Product Description

The Rage combines intensely bright HID light output and power conserving, long lasting LED technology into one headlamp. With 3 HID levels available, burn times range from 4 to 6 hours, and LED’s will burn for up to an amazing 80 hours! The Rage system also features lamp out protection, this safety feature automatically diverts power to the LED array should the HID bulb cease to function. Keeping safety in mind, flashing and beacon modes were programmed into the LED’s, adding to your daylight visibility.

Strengths:    super bright, great light for the price, awesome helmet bracket

Weaknesses:    constant breakdowns

Bottom Line:
Hope you don't get a lemon! When this light works, it's great! The HID "blue" light is like daytime... SUCH a step up from halogen. HID is old tech these days, but the light is still awesome for the price. Unfortunately, my light has been back at Night Rider for repairs 3 times in 11 months!!! I have an '06 Rage, and it developed odd electrical problems a few months after buying it. HID wouldn't work... LEDs would not come up to full intensity. Niterider was happy to fix it, but they made me pay for shipping (the first time). Had to send it back again 2 weeks later (and they paid that time). Now, 11 months later... same issues! They're paying again for shipping and repair, and said they they'd replace the circuit board (which they should have done the FIRST time). Hopefully this fixes it for good. Fingers crossed. Sux being without your light.

I have to give NR credit thoguh... they Did fix the light. Just make sure you break it within a year of purchase and continue breaking it within a year of it's last repair.

When it works though... it's great! BTW, I think the Enduro light is more reliable and you don't really need the gimicky LEDs on the Rage, so buy the Enduro instead.

Bottom Line:
This is an update to an earlier review.

Shortly after writing that review, the light stopped working. I sent it in for repair, and after recieving it back, only got two rides out of it before it died again.

Apparently (from what I've read on the forums), this is a fairly common occurance for Niterider HID lights.

Strengths:    The light is very bright and has a pretty long burn time.

Weaknesses:    Price. Light changes color when you hit rough trail. "Mounting system" is a joke told by an idiot.

Bottom Line:
This light is a little pricey for what it is (retail=$499). The light is bright, and the color of the light looks like daylight, however when you hit a bump, it flickers different colors (redish pink to purple, depending how hard you land or hit roots/rocks)which is a little odd, but not necessarily negative. The only really bad thing is the mounting system. It's just a loose strap. You're supposed to balance the battery on your downtube, wrap the strap around it, and strap it down. Unless you REALLY crank down on it, it will spin around the tube, usually at the worst time. I can't believe that that is the best they could come up with. Also, the cables are too short to put in a bottle cage, if you wanted to. What was wrong with the bottle-shaped battery???
Overall, still a good light, though. I'd give it 5 chillis if it wasn't for the sad, half-a$$ed attempt at a mounting system.

Strengths:    Extremely bright, solid, well-made, and vesatile.

Weaknesses:    The HID bulb occasionally flashes the color red. According to NiteRider it's due to the gases in the bulb. The battery weight is substantial, but I can run it on full power for at least 4-hours...much longer if I turn it down. (I chose not to spend the extra to get the Flight and it's light weight lithium-ion battery). The only disappointment I'd say I've had is the LED lights are really weak. I compared them to my PETZL headlamp while camping and it was no contest....PETZL was much brighter.

Bottom Line:
This is a light that you buy when you're through messing around with junk. You'll spend some real money, but during the scorching summer days, you'll get to ride after dark when everything has cooled down.

Strengths:    White light gives good depth perception, diff brightness settings will come in handy for 24hr racers, quick charging low hassle battery

Weaknesses:    helmet mount could use a few more degrees of adjustability, the way the battery mounts to the frame is sketchy - you're supposed to simply strap the battery to the frame with a loose piece of velcro, this would be fine for road riding but for mountain purposes it dosn't seem sturdy enough. Also there is no way I've found to turn on the LED's without having to power on the HID as well - this bothers me because HID bulbs have a limited number of on/off cycles and if I'm going to use the light in LED blink mode during the day on the roads I don't want to have to wear down the HID.

Bottom Line:
This light is excellent the weeknesses I listed only because it may be important to know for some people who are on the fence about blowing $$$ of a light of this level. Get this light if you want long burn times and super bright light suitable for mtn biking in the woods (at night). Don't get this light if you are only going to use it for commuting - it's overkill.

Strengths:    bright at all levels of HID, led's provide emergency light and light for breaks from riding. Battery life has not been verified since the longest ride I have done is 4 hours and I left it on in the pu bed on the way home for an additional .5 hour and it was still going strong on hig power. Being able to select beam strength a big plus when it's foggy out at night. Having both helmet and handle bar mount a plus. Works well on helmet for our tight twisty trails.

Weaknesses:    The only thing I can complain about is the cost because it meets or exceeds every thing I want from a light.

Bottom Line:
It does what it says it will do and does it extremely well. Have had no problems.
