I bought this light because I wanted a super bright light for commuting with the longest runtime possible. Its hard to explain how sophisticated this light is to someone who hasn't seen it. But you can program the on-off switch so that the light either has one, two, four or fifteen different light levels. Incredibly sophisticated. I chose the four-level setting which allows you to crank up the light when you are in a dark spot by hitting the button a few times, but conserve run time where you need less light. The light lets you know when you are running low on power. Big plus for me is the ease of taking it on and off. It mounts to the bar with basically a big heavy duty rubber band, sounds cheasy, but it actually is the easiest and quickest on-off setup I've ever seen. No tools, no stripping of screws to get it on and off. Only two problems with this light--first, this is an incredibly sophisticated system but the manual is written by someone who clearly barely speaks English. I've experienced this with certain cat-eye manuals in the past, but it was only a source of humor. This manual is the worst I've ever seen, and I have to say that there are aspects of this light that I can't access or experiment with because the manual is so bad. This is a significant problem. The good folks at gretna should do their German friends a favor and write a manual that is understandable, so that purchasers can actually use the light's many features. This is the reason I can't give a 5. The second problem, and this is a minor point, is that the battery doesn't quite fit right in american made bottle cages. The battery bottle doesn't have an indentation in the top for ease of carrying like bike water bottles do. It will fit in your cage but you have to wedge it in which feels like your going to bend your cage out of shape. I bought a new cage to use with it--no biggie. These points shouldn't keep you from buying because the light truly has the longest runtime available and is bright as hell, and if that's what you need, that's what you'll get. Jedd at Gretnabikes was great, and gave me free stuff with the order, so I give him a 5 for his outstanding service.

This is the light I used in winning the 2002 24 Hours of Adrenalin Solo World Championships. It is far superior to any other light system I have ever seen (and I have tried them all in my 11 career 24 Hour races, 9 of which were victories). The beam is very bright and focussed, in a natural "white" color. I tested the light against a Light N Motion HID and a Nightrider Storm HID. In full darkness, I tried to read the lettering on signs at a distance of 60 to 100 feet. With the Light n Motion and Nightrider the lettering was barely readable at 60 feet and invisible at 100 feet, but clear as day with the Lupine, all the way to 100 feet. At the 24 Hr Solo World Championships, the Lupine system also provided me a huge weight savings. The light is so bright, you will only need one system (handlebar or helmet mounted, whichever you prefer). The system is about 300g lighter than the competitors, or over 1000g lighter than those that require helmet and handlebar systems. Burn time is good, over 3 hours. Charge time is just 6 hours (regular charger and car charger included). The new "Edison" light from Lupine promises to be even better!
