Favorite Trail:Bluff Point in CT Rocky Point on Long Island
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $50.00
Purchased At:local shop
Strengths:comfortable, reasonably light, solid!! fits right. .....oh and did I say comfy?
Weaknesses:straps a bit hard to adj.. but you only do that once.
Bottom Line:I have had a few different helmets, some "higher" end, some cheaper. I have found most of the mid to cheapies fell better. the high end ones just don't sit right on my head. Found this helmet by chance on sale at a shop just outside a trail when I forgot my regular one at home. put it on and haven't used any other since.

I had a pretty major face plant a few weeks ago. hit HARD on the front of my face/head. between the glasses and helmet a lot of damage was averted. the helmet is crushed and cracked in many places in the front, but my skull isn't. only bone I broke was my nose. Helmet did it's job, very well!!

Favorite Trail:Fountainhead
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $40.00
Purchased At:The Bike Lane, Burke
Strengths:Protects your head at a reasonable price.
Similar Products Used:Earlier generation Vapor.
Bottom Line:You can argue that safety gear is the one area for which money should be no object, but I suspect the $100+ helmets get you lighter weight more than anything else.

Two days ago I went over the bar and came down hard on my head, shoulder, and back. The Vapor cracked, my skull didn't. All is well.

I went out the next day and bought a new Vapor. It's a helmet that does the job at a very reasonable price.

By the way, keep your receipt when you buy a Vapor, or I imagine any other Trek helmet. On the box it says that if you crash within the first year and damage the helmet, you can send the helmet and receipt to Trek, and they will replace it with a new one.

Favorite Trail:Burlington Bike Trails
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $45.00
Purchased At:North Star Cyclery
Strengths:Price, design, comfort, and style.
Weaknesses:None noted. Maybe because it was so inexpensive, people might turn up their noses. Silly people! LOL.
Similar Products Used:I had an old Bailen helmet. Cracked in half after a bad fall. It was an excellent helmet, but it was far from comfortable. It was hot, wouldn't stay put. But is saved my head!
Bike Setup:Currently I'm riding a Trek 7.5 FX. Road and not-to-wild off-road.
Bottom Line:I tried all the helmets a large store had to offer. Money was not an object. The Trek Vapor won hands-down. I highly recommend this helmet for riders of all ages.

Favorite Trail:Mule Trail in the Mojave
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $30.00
Purchased At:Victorville Bike Shop
Strengths:Fits good, looks good and is very lightweight. The fine tuning knob is a perfect tweak.
Weaknesses:I don't know if there is one. It's kept my nugget in one piece.
Similar Products Used:Bell helmets
Bike Setup:Motobecane 700DS
Bottom Line:This helmet is probably one of the best helmets on the market, and the price is very average joe range. I've done months of research for a good helmet for my son and myself and I must say when I bought this dome for myself, I DONE GOOD! Of course you could go out and pay big dollars for Giro or Giant, but I'm no high roller, so this is a great helmet for people in my neck of the desert.

Price Paid: $39.00
Purchased At:The Bicycle Shop
Strengths:-Cheap (Even though it looks like I paid more than most)
-Well-ventilated
-Great fit
-Great Protection
Weaknesses:-Visor is so short it almost looks stupid
Bottom Line:This helmet probably prevented me from cracking my head open and helped me only get a concussion. Only 8 days after getting the helmet, I had a big crash and broke my thumb and collar bone and got a mild concussion, but I couldn't imagine hat it would have been like without the helmet, or my old helmet.

It fits great and works great, what can I say, Is better than helmets 4-5x the money.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $39.00
Purchased At:Bikes and Moore
Strengths:Lightweight, well ventelated, takes an impactlooks better than others I tried in the same price range.
Weaknesses:Pads are poorly made, nylon glued to foam. They fell apart after 3 months. I contacted my dealer & Trek only to find out you can't get replacements.
Similar Products Used:Giro Havoc
Bike Setup:Hardtale frame with XTR drive Hayes disk breaks, Mavik 317 rims, Shimano XT disk hubs. Terry Liberator Comfort seat and Rockshox suspension post. A real mutt of a ride but I like it.
Bottom Line:The shell is solid and stylish. The pads (and Trek's support) are JUNK. Even a moderately priced helmet should last more than one season, barring a serious impact.

Favorite Trail:anything traverible
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $40.00
Purchased At:Bike Doctor (LBS)
Strengths:Good ventilation for the price, looks better than most other bike helmets, lightweight, best fit (for me) of any helmet I've tried. Although, I haven't seriously tried anything more than $60. Suspension is almost like a sweatband, so you don't have to worry about getting sweat in your eyes on long hard rides when it's hot.
Weaknesses:The visor is rather small, but do you need it? Most helmets don't have visors, and who doesn't wear some kind of eyeglass when riding? Not a moulded shell, so it doesn't have as much ventilation as helmets that cost 2 - 3 times as much as it. Okay, so visors probably aren't the most aerodynamic shape for bike helmets which would probably explain road racers not using them.
Similar Products Used:Bell Sonar that was given to me the day I got my bike.
Bike Setup:2001 Trek 4300.
Bottom Line:Recently, I've been doing 2.5 to 3 hour trips in temps that are in or near the low to mid 90's(Fahrenheit) on pavement. During these trips I've only taken my helmet off one or two times, it remains comfortable but oddly enough it seems to loosen up after a while, but no big deal.
It's a great all around helmet for the money, and I highly recommend it, but since the $100 - $200 helmets do have more vents I'll only give it four chilis overall and five for value.

Favorite Trail:case mt.
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $20.00
Purchased At:Newington Bike
Strengths:There are many peices to this helmet that make it a good one. First was the price, even though I get a discount as a a result of working in a bike shop the original price is not that bad. The second thing I like was that the helmet was light weight. The ventilation system on the helmet also works well. The last peice to this helmet that I noticed was that it fit very well, There was not alot of movement from the helmet on my head when I was riding, which I truely hate helmets that do that.
Weaknesses:n/a
Similar Products Used:giro ?
Bike Setup:trek 4300, lx rear, xt crank w/ ti bb, xt front, manitou sx, crowbars, deore brakes
Bottom Line:the bottom line on this helmet is that for the price you are getting a very well made helmet. The ventilation on the helmet is very well designed as well as the fit looks and over all strength. Just over a week ago I took a nasty fall an hit my head on some rocks, the helmet took the brunt of the impact (split in half) and all I received was a minor concousion. So for me I think I will stay with this helmet trek must be doing something right, right?

My personal preference, but I liked this helmet over many others, regardless of cost. It comes in several colors. I bought the red with the black (carbon-look) trim. By the way, a different Trek helmet beat 4 other major competitors in a Mountain Bike Action magazine shootout (September 2001 issue) so Trek must be doing something right. Favorite Trail:Lincoln Parish Park
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $35.00
Purchased At:The Bike Source (Monroe, Louisiana)
Strengths:Easy to adjust, cinch retention system works well, visor is secure.
Weaknesses:Doesn't have enough pads. Pads could be thicker and sturdier (my front pad is splitting). The tape that holds the shell on doesn't stick very well, but it hasn't been a big problem yet. The helmet fits well front to back, but not side to side so I had to buy a pad set to make the helmet fit to the sides of my head better. The sides of the helmet could be ventilated better (it's hot down here in La.!)
Similar Products Used:None.
Bike Setup:Specialized Hard Rock Sport, stock except for Specialized SpeedZone Sport speedometer.
Bottom Line:Good helmet, overall fit is pretty good, looks good. Haven't crashed yet, so I can't say how it holds up under those conditions, but will let you know if it happens. Good value for the money. I wanted red or silver, but had to settle for black. Still looks good, though. If not for the pads, I'd give it 5 flaming hot dogs overall. As it stands I'll give it four overall, 5 for value. Anyone who wants a good, solid attractive helmet should buy this.

Strengths:
Fits well, retention system works. Actually like it more than the Giro system it copies.
Light.
Looks good.
Cheap.
Crash replacement for 1 year
Weaknesses:
Could be better ventilated in the front.
Similar Products Used:
Hammerhead, Gila, Air Banshee
Bike Setup:
Marin hardtail/Z2
Bottom Line:Great helmet for its price, or even twice its price. Good looks of the Specialized helmets with the fitting qualities of Giro. Retention system works great, I dont notice Im wearing a helmet. The only thing that could use improvement is ventilation to the forehead area. Ill probably upgrade to the Photon when summer rolls around again. Overall, great helmet.

Strengths:
comfortablepricebetter ventilation than other higher priced helmetsI also think Trek has a crash replacement policy.Doesn't look like a bubble.I bought the white helmet. And all the berry stains from the berry bushes I hit with my head are starting to make some really cool designs and colors.
Weaknesses:
retention isn't as fancy as others, but works just fine.visor is kinda cheap but works too.
Bike Setup:
k2 hardtail
Bottom Line:The Bottom Line: Spend $30+ dollars less and buy this helmet. Put the extra cash towards something more exciting for your bike(a good start for brakes, derailers, seat post, pedals, etc).I haven't crash tested this helmet yet but Consumer reports says it will hold up. It rated this helmet high for its above average ventilation system.

Cheapo, huge Bell helmet I used to have when I was younger. Made me look like an alien!!!
Bike Setup:
GT Aggressor
Bottom Line:BUY THIS HELMET!!! This is a great helmet! I've looked all over, tried different brands of helmets, and none fit better than this one! This helmet is SO perfect! No more of that side-to-side, front-to-back jiggling because the darn helmet just don't fit right crap! And at a price of $35, you really can't pass it up. This helmet is comparable to the GT Torero, which lists around $60. Both have an ample amount of 19 vents, but only the Vapor weighs in at 260g compared to a whopping 312g on the Torero. Oh, and one more thing, this helmet DOES come in red (swirl red)! So go out and get this helmet. With the money you've saved, go get another pair of gloves!
FIVE FLAMIN'-HOT ONES!!!

Strengths:
Inexpensive, great cooling, large size fits heads up to 64cm
Weaknesses:
Retainer isn't as whizzy as the Louis Garneau or Giro Lock 3 designs
Bike Setup:
Gary Fisher Aquila
Bottom Line:I searched around and bought this helmet after the June 1999 Consumer Reports rated it as their Best Buy. It beat out helmets costing almost 5X the price. Simply put, this helmet is a steal. Exceeds CPSC Impact, top ratings for venting and fits my fat head for only $35. What else could you ask for?
