Strengths:    Saved my life more than once, looks good, comfortable

Weaknesses:    Bit hot, makes my scalp itch

Bottom Line:
I've received many a compliment on the looks and it's saved me from injury countless times as my eyes are bigger than my brake pads.

Strengths:    Shape covers all the necessary areas of the head. Fit is good and lid stays on even over the roughest rides and does not shift around. Straps and internal cage is very comfortable over long rides.

Weaknesses:    Ventilation could be better. Despite 11 vents, scalp gets a bit of a cooking.

Bottom Line:
Does the job of protecting the grey-stuff and is holding together (no lifting shell or shredding foam) after a year of riding in blistering heat and pouring rain. Stays on tight over very rough rides without being uncomfortable at all. Ventilation could be a little better but in this heat nothing short of an ice-pack can really work. Past experiences with Bell (fell apart in Malaysia's hot and wet weather) made me try a new brand and the Specialized is a steal. Five burners for value -cos its a steal, 4 for overall cos it ain't perfect(but nearly).

Date Reviewed: July 2, 2001

Strengths:    saves head from pain
rear retention system is pretty good
inexpensive

Weaknesses:    only 11 vents (i have the 97 model)
visor not well attached
straps somewhat annoying

Bottom Line:
If I had known I would have the same helmet this long I would have put another $50 into the price. At the time this was a good deal for the $. It does not excel in any area, and the shell is only held on by a strip of tape, yet I have had no real problems and it does not shift around. I have a feeling the new model has better airflow. That, perhaps, is my only real complaint; it is rather hot in the summer. I usually wear a headband to keep the sweat out of my eyes, since the pad at the front does not absorb much. I'll have to give it 5 stars because it has lasted so long and delivers good performance for the price range.

Weaknesses:    too few vents

Bottom Line:
Here's a short story. I was riding teeter-totters and not paying attention to where I was going. Anyway, I ended up running into a tree, stupid I know. This helmet cracked and saved my head from cracking, all I had was wiplash and a bad headache. It's a great helmet because it did exactly what I wanted it to do.

Strengths:    This helmet is the best bang for the buck. Under $50 great fit doesnt get hot in the summer. Nice color pattern doesnt look like a cheap lid.

Weaknesses:    One of the pads did fall off but a little glue fixed that

Bottom Line:
This helmet deserves five chilies for value fit and styling. I am not to big on Specialized products overall but you cant beat this lid. I did break one on a fall when I landed on the back of my head took it to the shop and they gave me a new one for $20, not bad.

Strengths:    Comfortable, Inexpensive, protective, good for cruzin when I'm not going extreme.

Weaknesses:    Cracked on my friend, but also saved his life, so I'm not going to complain.

Bottom Line:
It's a pretty cool helmet. I like it. I don't know what the other people are smokin' sayin that it's a crappy helmet. Helmets are to be thrown away after an impact anyway. This is the perfect helmet for this. It saved my friend like I said before. He flew 15 feet up in the air, and landed on his head. Scared the hell out of me, but no damage to his head. (he's already mess up)

Submitted by Mark a Cross Country Rider from St. Augustine

Date Reviewed: August 1, 2000

Strengths:    inexpensive, cool colors, quick adjust straps, breaks easily on impact, but protects head from serious damage.

Weaknesses:    poor ventilation, breaks easily on impact

Bottom Line:
Specialized helmets had a good crash replacement warrenty, $10 gets you a new helmet. That is no longer the fact, now you get a worthless voucher for 20% off a new helmet, but it is not even valid for mail order companys. The helmets do thier intended job of saving your head in an accident, but do usually crack upon impact. The vents are okay, but do not compare to other helmets in the price range.

Submitted by Ghetto Ridah a Weekend Warrior from Glendale, CA

Date Reviewed: June 11, 2000

Strengths:    ~$39, ajustability, decent liner pads, well ventilated, SNELL certified, looks nice.

Weaknesses:    Does not protect the head from 7.52x51mm NATO FMJ fired from rifles such as the FN-FAL, HK G3, or US M14.

Bottom Line:
For the price, you can't beat the features. Most brain buckets in this price are not even adjustable, liner is virtually non-existent, and you certainly will not find the SNELL sticker inside. The Mountain Man has all that for $40!
