Purchased At:J. E. James
Strengths:Saved my life more than once, looks good, comfortable
Weaknesses:Bit hot, makes my scalp itch

Submitted by Clay a from Malaysia
Date Reviewed: December 20, 2001
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $32.00
Strengths:Shape covers all the necessary areas of the head. Fit is good and lid stays on even over the roughest rides and does not shift around. Straps and internal cage is very comfortable over long rides.
Weaknesses:Ventilation could be better. Despite 11 vents, scalp gets a bit of a cooking.
Similar Products Used:A couple of Bells
Bike Setup:MTB
Bottom Line:Does the job of protecting the grey-stuff and is holding together (no lifting shell or shredding foam) after a year of riding in blistering heat and pouring rain. Stays on tight over very rough rides without being uncomfortable at all. Ventilation could be a little better but in this heat nothing short of an ice-pack can really work. Past experiences with Bell (fell apart in Malaysia's hot and wet weather) made me try a new brand and the Specialized is a steal. Five burners for value -cos its a steal, 4 for overall cos it ain't perfect(but nearly).

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $50.00

Strengths:saves head from pain
rear retention system is pretty good
inexpensive
Weaknesses:only 11 vents (i have the 97 model)
visor not well attached
straps somewhat annoying
Similar Products Used:giro gila
several low end bell helmets
Bike Setup:2001 jamis dakar expert
Bottom Line:If I had known I would have the same helmet this long I would have put another $50 into the price. At the time this was a good deal for the $. It does not excel in any area, and the shell is only held on by a strip of tape, yet I have had no real problems and it does not shift around. I have a feeling the new model has better airflow. That, perhaps, is my only real complaint; it is rather hot in the summer. I usually wear a headband to keep the sweat out of my eyes, since the pad at the front does not absorb much. I'll have to give it 5 stars because it has lasted so long and delivers good performance for the price range.

Weaknesses:Cracked on my friend, but also saved his life, so I'm not going to complain.
Similar Products Used:Giro 97. I forgot the model name. It was blue though.

Bottom Line:It's a pretty cool helmet. I like it. I don't know what the other people are smokin' sayin that it's a crappy helmet. Helmets are to be thrown away after an impact anyway. This is the perfect helmet for this. It saved my friend like I said before. He flew 15 feet up in the air, and landed on his head. Scared the hell out of me, but no damage to his head. Weaknesses:poor ventilation, breaks easily on impact
Similar Products Used:98 mountain man, cracked it, replaced under warrenty with 99 mountain man cracked it also.
Bottom Line:Specialized helmets had a good crash replacement warrenty, $10 gets you a new helmet. That is no longer the fact, now you get a worthless voucher for 20% off a new helmet, but it is not even valid for mail order companys. The helmets do thier intended job of saving your head in an accident, but do usually crack upon impact. The vents are okay, but do not compare to other helmets in the price range.

Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:Mine is like 98's model I think, the yellow one with red and black flame like graphics. It is not as freaky looking as a Giro or a Bell Evo. In other words, you look normal wearing this helmet. I counted 12 vents. I know the numbers drill, I pay more to get more vents, which really means I pay more to get less material to cover my head. Go figure. I don't think I go fast enuff on a trail to justify having 20+ vents on my helmet anyways. My only complaint, the visor gets in my vision's way, which forces me to hold my head up higher, which causes my neck to be sore after a period of time. Other than that, it's a good helmet. I give it 4 stars for now. If I should crash and it saves me noggin, I'll review it again for 5 stars :o)

Bottom Line:

This helmet is a great value especially considering the recent price reduction (I picked up one for around 25 bucks). I never used to wear a helmet before, I considered them unecessary (until I started doing some scary downhills, etc).
The visor and fit are excellent, and it is a good looking helmet. One problem I have with some of these hi-tech helmets are that they are incredibly stupid looking (making you look similar to a giant bug). Specialized helmets still offer air flow and protection but are a tad more conservatively styled than some stuff by Gyro, etc. But I guess some guys need something to match their purple lycra shorts, yellow ATB booties, and flourescent green biking socks.

I bought me a Team Mtn. Dew Mtn. Man helmet OH, about almost 2 years ago, Sure I've had crashes, who hasn't, but none that I actually landed on my head or even close to my head, I land on my back or whatever otehr way, and my helmet looks like it's been to hell and back! it's got dents and dings int eh foam, it still looks awesome, but you can now sqeeze teh foam and it will dent easily, SO I ordered a Giro Exodus so I hope that works out much better. Overall, it does it's job it looks awesome, but it could have a bit better way of making it. So I give it 3 chilis

Crashed and burned, it protected well. BUT, the shell got really weak from rides on hot, sunny days. Also, the visor is too low in the front. It will give you a sore neck. Good protection 5 stars, no longevity, poor vision = 1 stars, I'll give it a 3. Going to buy a Giro today.

Bottom Line:

Over all a pretty good fitting helmet and comfortable, but after 10 rides the strap at the front came loose and now the helmet slides all over my head. I talked to Specialized and they said they'd send me double-sided tape to fix it. I said don't bother I have rolls of the shit in my basement. Also the visor sits to low and obstructs visibility. Because of the good secure fit, I'll rate the helmet 4 chili's even though it looks cheap.

Date Reviewed: October 21, 1997
Bottom Line:

I have owned the Mountain Man for a little over 1 year and I have been impressed with the snug fit and ventilation. However I have found that the visor is limited in it's positioning on the helmet. It sits way to low on the front and forces you to lift your head just enough to cramp your neck on an hour ride or more. There doesn't seem to be a solution outside of removal of the visor. They should have made slightly larger velcro tabs for more versitile adjustments. More importantly the front chin strap has let go under the gloss shell and now the straps rest on either side of my eyes rather than ears. I will be sending it back and requesting a replacement.

I had the unfortunate experience of crashing, but I had my Specialized helme
on. The Mountian Man provided excelent protection when I bit the dust. Acctually I was on my new raod bike and tried to bunnie-hop a cattle-gaurd I hit the payvment fiarly hard going about 40kph. Overall the helmet took a maority of the
impact on the left temple region. It cracked slightly in the front but it was still in fairly good condition. I can't of cource use it now but I felt without my helmet on I would have been seriously injured. The only thing I did not like about the helmet was that it had a tendency to ride forward on my head to obscure my vision I loved the look and the visor is a great feature I could take it off when I wanted use the helmet for road or put it back on for mbt riding. One last thing I think that it a little overpriced but can you really put a price on your head( maybe not....)

First got the Mountain Dew Mountain Man for Xmas '96. A piece o' the shell came off with a branch -- no biggie. But then... Just a couple of days ago, the shell came completely off! This wasn't due to a crash. During a break on a hot day, I had it hanging upside down on my bars. When I took it off the bars, the visor caught on the bar ends and the whole shell came off! Turns out the only thing holding the shell to the foam is double face tape on the inside and the thin tape on the edge. I've used some plastic electrician's tape to hold it together, but it's a-going back.

I bought a Mountain Man helmet, thinking it looked pretty cool, and it fitted well, which it does, but when I got it home I had a closer look, and really the quality of construction is very poor, and it's very fragile (compared with other helmets I've owned).
I've not crashed on it, but already it looks really beaten up, and the microshell is cracked.
OK, it's only cosmetic, but hey, I'm unimpressed.I still wear it though, and it can have one flaming chilly, because I guess it will do it's job.

I bought a Mountain Man for £50! Expensive for a piece of expanded polystyrene. The first time you put this helmet on though you have a sense of confidence in the product. It fits like a glove. It's comfy over a long ride with great ventilation and it never budged a millimetre over the gnarliest rooty sections. Brilliant! Again, not cheap but what price do you put on your head. Definately a winner if Specialized helmets fit you better than others.

Bottom Line:

I recently purchased a '97 Mountain Man helmet from Performance and I think it is a great helmet. I only paid $35.00 for mine and got the black/white/gray helmet which I think looks the best. The helmet is reasonably cool and comes with a visor which is held in place by velcro. The velcro does a good job of keeping the visor in place. The helmet fits well thanks to the pads that they give you which comes in three different sizes. I have the medium pads in the helmet with the large pad in front. This gives me enough room to get a bandana underneath the helmet and prevents the helmet from bouncing around and falling over my eyes down a steep rocky descent. There may be better helmets out there but I think it would be hard to beat this helmet for the price.

Fits well, is quite cool, light and comfortable. This model comes with a
visor and several different size interior pads for an almost cutom fit. Plus
it has this special strap thing that comes down in back for fit and works
very well. You can get it in freak colors or rather consevative colors, all
for $45. Its a good deal for an item you should not keep more than a season
of beating. Specialized says that if you have a good crash with it and send
it to them with $10, they will send you a new one. HINT, HINT!

Bottom Line:

This isn't the lightest or most ventialated helmet in the world but it's still
pretty damn good. It has 11 vents and a good visor that helps direct air into
the helmet. It does a good job of keeping your noggin cool even in 90 degree
,80% humidity weather. The retention device in the back is pretty cool. This helmet
doesn't bounce around much at all. Even when you ride over old railroad bridges.
It has an extended back for some extra protection and if you do crash Specialized
has a NO-Fault replacement program. They will replace it even if no damage is visible
for (i think) $20 and your proof of purchase. It cost about $60 so $20 isn't
all that bad for a new one.

This is one of the best helmets for the money. It has 10 vents, removable visor, and the Brainlock device for a solid fit.
The Brainlock holds onto the back of your head and keeps the helmet from bouncing around and shifting while
you negotiate bumpy terrain. It is Snell, ASTM and ANSI certified. Weighs 10.5oz.
It comes in a variety of cool colors/designs. I have the Ground Control edition which is the one seen in their magazine
ads (mosty grey and yellow freeform mountain graphics). They also just came out with the new Team Mountain Dew
graphics design. Very cool! At $60, this is a great deal!
