Date Reviewed: August 16, 2000
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Price, strength
Weaknesses:It kept adjusting itself, so I would have to readjust it for myself often.
Similar Products Used:none really. i've had other helmets, but i didn't crash test many of them
Bike Setup:4-year-old Mongoose Switchback
Bottom Line:Last week I was going down a 3 mile hill on a dirt road that was in poor condition. At the bottom, i did flip over my bike. I did land directly on my head, and then rolled over to my shoulder. I have an AC seperation in my shoulder, but only a slight bruise on my head. I'm incredbily thankful that I was wearing a helmet, and will comtinue to do so, after my shoulder heals. I have had this helmet for a few years, but this was my first major fall, and it did just what an excellent helmet should do-take the impact instead of my head. Either the helmet or my head was going to crack, so I know that I made the right choice.

Date Reviewed: April 15, 1999
Duration Product Used:
6 months
Strengths:
Price, Evidentley does what its suposed to..(saved my head!!!)
Weaknesses:
Looks, lack of visor
Similar Products Used:
Bell Forza2 Pro (Love it!!!)
Bike Setup:
Gary fisher Big Sur, Judy xc long travel
Bottom Line:This helmet seemed to be a great helmet for the price, unfortunately I was one that did get to crash test it. It did exactley what it was suposed to do, it took the blunt of the impact and saved my head, just wish I could of been wearing it on my shoulder, suffered a 3rd degree seperation of the AC Joint, after surgery and 7 weeks of recovery I am now back to riding...This just goes to show how a helmet does work, I hit on my head about 3 times harder than my shoulder and didnt even get a knot on my head, wish I could say the same about the helmet, but hey it did its job...and specialized has a crash replacement program, if you bust a helmet you can send it in and get 20% off on your next purchase of a specialized helmet...Bell has a better replacement program though so I bought a bell...they will replace for 20 bucks, no matter which helmet it is you purchased, thats better than 20%...I do give this helmet a 5, because I feel that for the price it provided sufficient protection, afterall thats what we buy a helmet for isnt it, not for the looks, well maybe not...Ride Hard!!!!!

Bottom Line:

I used this helmet for a good year and now that I got a Qranc Ice Cube can only say the Air Foil is ok. Mine didn't have a visor or a web lock in the back. The fit was not the best since it sat kinda high so there's hardly any protection on the sides and back. The ventilation was only moderate, but it is a good helmet for the price, at least the price I got for it, 15 bucks or something.

Excellent for the price! Bought it at Performane and I just love it. Fits on your head like some sort of intrinsical intertwination.
