Submitted by Ryan a Weekend Warrior from Brisbane, QLD
Date Reviewed: May 8, 2003
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Protects your head, fits pretty well for a cheaper helmet, good airflow,
Weaknesses:A bit heavy, the fit of a cheaper helmet
Bike Setup:DMR Trailstar, dirt jump / urban / DH setup
Bottom Line:Had this helmet for years and in all honesty, probably should have replaced it long ago for safety's sake. That said, 2 weeks ago when it came to the crunch and a crash gave me a blow to the head that I've no doubt would have killed me the Banshee stepped up and did it's job flawlessly and I got away without even a concussion. Can't really argue with that.

Favorite Trail:Anything dirty
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $80.00
Purchased At:Schumi
Strengths:- Good quality for the price!
- Easily adjustable
Weaknesses:- little heavy and big
- Older ( not so safe ) building method: outer shell taped instead of bonded to inner shell
- Not as well ventilated as some newer helmets

Similar Products Used:Very old Giro 'shoebox' kinda thing
Going to buy a new Giro Pneumo in a few days
Bike Setup:GT Karakoram
Raleigh roadbike
Bottom Line:This is actually a very good helmet for the money. It's the first mountainbike-specific helmet I started out with, and never had too much complaints about it. It's just a little heavy and big, so much more a beginners helmet than for racer's or pro's, but hey, then we're talking different kind of cash, right ? The Web Retention system ( copy of Giro's RocLoc ) doesn't work too good, I like Giro's better, that actually works instead of just being there like a chunk of plastic.
All in all a good helmet for the money, it served me well for over 2 years, anybody wanna buy it ? ;-)
I crashed only once during those 2 years ( how I do that? I dunno.. ), landed on my head against a concrete pole, but the helmet was fine. I wouldn't be if I hadn't worn one!

People, just buy and wear al helmet every time, it's your own safety and we've all got people who love us and are pleased if we wear one and return home safely, at least most of the times!

Happy trails !!

Strengths:The web retention retention system keeps thing snug. With the light weight, you hardly know you have it on. Good visibility, even with the visor. Looks pretty cool, also.
Weaknesses:None so far

Bottom Line:Got a great deal at $49 and with another $20 discount, wear it for a year and pitch it if you don't like it. For all of the great features, I'll keep mine until it falls apart and will probably look for Specialized again. Great helmet all around.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $45.00
Purchased At:Bici Mania - Lissone (MI)
Strengths:You don't look an alien when you wear it
Light and well vented
Good quality inside and outside
Weaknesses:"Web" retention system is not as goog as King Cobra "brain trust"
Similar Products Used:I tried Specialized King Cobra
Bike Setup:Specialized Stumpjumper M2 2000
Bottom Line:Very good helmet in general.I tried King Cobra and frankly speaking is better. Its new retention system "brain trust" helps you to set the helmet perfecly. No moves when you ride.

I bought Banshee first for the price (only 45£ against 90£ of King Cobra)and then for the look.
It also has a very good ventilation. I've removed the front visor to increase ventilation and visibility.
Web retention system is quite good but requires a little bit of time and patience to set, but at least the result are appreciable.
Goog idea from Specialized adding extra pads to put on the foam shell to increase confort (better add extra pads after few rides). I've used three of them after testing the helmet for a few rides and now my banshee fits very good and it's comfortable also thanks to its own lightness.

At least it's a very quality product. Since this helmet is no longer available for the next season, I suggest you to buy an helmet with "brain trust" retention system from specialized catalog (King Cobra if you have money enough)but Enduro Comp or Enduro pro are also good.
For chilis only because the retention system can be improved

Strengths:Amazing looks, fits very well and snug, keeps my head much cooler than previous helmets of mine.
Weaknesses:A bit pricey.
Similar Products Used:Giro, Bell, and Specialized helmets.
Bike Setup:Trek 8000
Bottom Line:Excellent helmet! I really like the way it sits on my head snug. Hardly notice that I'm wearing the helmet. Big bonus is that it looks so good too. My previous helmet, a Bell, after a ride my hair would be soaked from sweat -- didn't do its job of keeping my head cool. The effective vents on the Air Banshee keep my head amazingly cool. Very pleasantly surprised, since you can't really tell how well the helmet will perform in this area just by looking at it in the store.

A bit pricey, but then again, there are plenty of more expensive helmets. Excellent helmet and my fav to date.

Date Reviewed: January 19, 2000
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:Good looks, lotsa ventilation, adjustable retention system, velcro visor, lightweight, and decent rear protection.
Weaknesses:Not as chi-chi as the Giro Exodus
Similar Products Used:Specialized Sub-Zero, Giro Supermoto
Bike Setup:Access Ti Frame, XMO O2 Fork, SRAM 9.0sl drivetrain, RaceFace Crank/BB, Avid Arch-Rival brakes, Kore stem. Hyperlite bar
Bottom Line:Been using the Banshee for about 2 years now (probably time to replace it). The helmet fits extremely well, is very well ventilated (the mouthport at the front of the helmet is cool), provides adequate rear coverage, and fairly light. The velcro visor lets the visor break off easily in the event of a face plant and the web rentention system allows the rider to adjust the fit to pretty much anyway (s)he sees fit. While it does NOT look as good as the Exodus, it does weigh and cost less. As for durability, any helmet that passes the standards should be fine. If you look hard enough on the web, you can probably pick one up for $40 - $60. 5 Chilis on both accounts!

Weaknesses:

Bottom Line:Pretty cool helmet. The Red/Black/Blue one looks great....like fire! Looking at it from the front, although it looks good from that angle, it kinda looks like a cone ontop of your head because of that one circular vent (what the Hell is it for??) that sits atop the center of the shell. Aaaah, who cares, as long as it guards my melon, I'm happy with it....especially since I only paid 50 bones for it.

I was tossed by a bolder and landed on my back, the next thing I saw was the frame of my bike headed straight between my eyes. The helmet was cracked front centre but it cushioned the impact. After cracking my last helmet, I decided to be different from my friends and buy a Specialized. I look around and liked the Banshee a lot so I bought it. The fit is good, the look is better and the airflow is tops! I've gone and riding SFU (local mountain with great trails) in the middle of summer and my head was nice and cool. The helmet is pretty light too, which is an extra bonus. I'm gonna let loose five of the hottest chili's on this puppy!

I bought the '99 International model (with the flames), and it's looks real nice! The fit is comfortable, and it vents pretty well. HOWEVER, a few weeks back I crashed fairly hard, and while there was not a scratch on the outter plastic shell, the inner foam lining split in two. I called Specialized about their crash return policy, but apparently it doesn't apply to these International models! So for $70 I got a busted helmet and a 20% discount on my next Specialized helmet.

Date Reviewed: January 12, 1999
Bottom Line:

I got this helmet after trashing my previous Spec. helmet, and Air Cut. And to be honest it is not a bad helmet. In fact it's a very good helmet indeed - it does everything a helmet should do and it does it in style. But I really didn't notice that much difference in terms of comfort and fit between the cheaper Air Cut and more expensive Banshee, and this made me doubt its expensive price tag. The fact is, the only thing the Banshee can provide which is better than the cheaper Spec. helmets is a better look! The helmet retails for about £70 in Britain, which is on the expensive side of average for an open face helmet. So if image is important, then buy this helmet, if not buy a cheaper Specialized because they're almost as good at a much lower price.

An excellant looking helmet, that is also comfortable, light and highly adjustable. Loads of vents mean it does not have to be removed in order to cool your head down. The peak is just about the right size to keep the sun out of your eyes without restricting view.
Reasonable price (how much do you value your head?) and lifetime crash replacement mean the helmet you should own!

I bought this helmet for £65 in August. I was impressed by the cool looks and colours and for once when I looked in the mirror I didn't look stupid.
Back on the trail it proved well vented, and fairly comfortable, but it did
move about.
Compared to those crap 'bucket' helmets with no peaks it looks a lot better
and in my book this is very important. The back especially looks the bussiness,
with it's great rippled effect.
You can't really fault this helmet for other than it's a-bit-loose-retention
system and a tad pricy. Cool peak also...

Well, I bought one at Bike 97 and have done over 1000 miles under it. This was my first lid, and I can honestly say I never noticed it on my head. For those of you who already have a helmet, this is a good lid as it's well-ventilated and stays on - what more could you want (and it looks good!). But for all you out there who don't have a helmet 'cos it's too uncool or whatever your mates tell you, just get one. I don't feel the helmet, but knowing it's there gives me the confidence to ride faster, which is a good upgrade in my book. A top bit of head-saving plasticky stuff!

When I decided to get this helmet its looks probably won me over more then anything else, but when i got into a wreck up in the Canadian wilderness, this thing more then likely saved my life, or at the very least alot of greif. I slammed my head onto a rock at a pretty good speed and with all my body weight behind it (240lbs.) The helmet gave way in all the right spots and I'll I wound up with was a slight concussion. Well, and a seperated shoulder, but thats not the helmets fault :)

Replaced a GT Stinger: Fit is far superior; finish (overall quality) is about the same; doesn't vent as well, but I prefer it (actually got too cool with the Stinger); adjustablity is quick and easy; visor is better (shorter providing better visability); color/apperance is first rate. I've not crashed it, but I have slammed brush/tree limbs etc. without a scratch. For the money it's an excellent choice. Would have given 5 stars had the stickers that seal the shell to the liner were cleaner and stronger.

I just got a 1998 Air Banshee and absolutely love it! Some of the best scientific engineering in ventilation (the venturi on top of the helmet) in a long time. The vents are just as big as those on the Giro Exodus in most spots, but they aren't as plentiful as on the Giro. The fit leaves a little to be desired. I have a Bell Tsunami Pro and it feels like it just wraps around my head when I put it on, but the Banshee feels like it just sits on top of my head. Once you strap it on and get the retention system set, it's actually stronger than my Bell. That's really the only minus I can find about this helmet. I got the cool new Mango color. Fell in love with this helmet the minute I saw it in Performance!

Get yourself a Specialized Air Banshee, awesome piece of kit. Apart form the fact that it looks excellent, the web retention means that it sits still on your head without being so tight as to strangle you. The other thing which, in my opinion stands this lid alone is the ventilation system. I used to run an Extra Air from Specialized, which has bloody great holes in for cool air, the Banshee has a more scientific approach which keeps a constant current of air blowing across the top of your head. I know this is what the Specialized blurb says but I have to agree it works, damn good piece of kit. If you want a new lid I think you'd do well to find a better one..............
