$65.00 | | Purchased At: | pricepoint.com | | Strengths: | Relatively lightweight Affordable Giro quality Adjustability Hardened finish Looks Visor adjustment range | | Weaknesses: | Flimsy visor Hardened finish | | Similar Products Used: | Giro Supermoto | | Bike Setup: | Custom steel XC hardtail RM Slayer in freeride mode | | Bottom Line: | I bought this online as a replacement for my aging Giro Supermoto. Attractive features on the Exodus were price, color (orange), and Giro durability. I know it had good venting but a hot head has never been a problem for me.
I am very happy with several features: - Visor adjustability - I never really messed with adjusting my visor much but have been pleased with the range of adjustability on the Exodus, especailly compared to the velcro attachment of the Supermoto. - RocLoc system - I use this helmet year round and in the spring I can wear a thin skullcap in the morning commute and not need it in the afternoon. The Rocloc works great to accomodate the extra thickness. - Shell construction - I am both pleased and nervous with the "hard" shell casing. It wipes clean easily, feels more secure, and looks great, but I'm always nervous that the shell will crack upon a small impact (rather than maybe just denting a little like the "softer" hardshell of the Supermoto).
Bottom line: I feel like I have a "real" helmet when I wear it. Fit is great for my smallish head and the helemet is really comfortable for short or really long rides. I thend to forget it's there a lot, so I guess that's the real testimony, huh? | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I use it for 4 years now. I´ve been riding many miles of real bike trails in that time. Changed almost my whole equipment in these 4 years, but the helmet is still the same. I had some minor crashes (bout one or two per year), however, the helmet did not develop any cracks and looks still quite ok. Sometimes I think that I should buy a new one, but then again I ask myself why should I do so as it still does at it is supposed to do and the design is - at least to my opinion - still up to date. Hmm, maybe I will look for a new one this winter...
The only gripe: I think Giro helmets are somehow a bit overpriced compared to the competition (at least regular retail prices!). I cannot believe that Giro´s production processes are so much more costly than those of the competition. Do they shape their helmets by hand or what ? So, only 4 chillies in terms of value ! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Last week the bonded strap came undone for no reason. I contacted the retailer who were unsure what to do. I contacted the UK distributor who sent me back to the retailer. The retailer eventually agreed to send it back to the distributor. Over a week later the distributer still have not heard anythging and said they don't want to talk to me as they don't deal with customers. When asked what they would do about it they said they'd either replace or repair. I said I was unsure about having an E2 as a replacement as I'd read bad reports on the internet - to which they said that I shouldn't believe everything I read on the Net. I replied I'd bought the Exodus as a result of the excellent reports on the net.

It's a great helmet if you live in the hotter parts of the country. The summer rides here in Texas get above 100 constantly, so this helmet performs excellent. It's very secure when worn and you almost forget that it's there after a while. It does seem to ride a little high on the head and that might seem like it would be a problem when ducking tight terrain, but I've never had a problem in the tightest spots; you've just got to remember it's there (which can be hard). Also, what's with the colors? The '98 color selections suck. The '99 color selections were reasonable. The '00 color selections were ok. The '01 color selections are abysmal: black and orange? Who the hell wants plain orange helmet??? When you have a helmet as sleek looking as the Exodus, you have to have some nice color schemes to go with it. | | Similar Products Used: | Specialized, Bell | | Bike Setup: | GT Zaskar | | Bottom Line: | Great helmet. The Roc Loc 3 substantially helps the thing stay in place. There is some shifting around, but that is virtually impossible to eliminate in bicycle helmets. When I fall, it will stay on my head. The adjustable visor is simply a great idea. Sometimes I want protection, sometimes I want the visor up so I can see the terrain further ahead of me. Ventilation is as good or better than anything I've tried(although all bike helmets are gonna make your melon sweat to some extent). Overall, this is a solid solid helmet that looks great (if you get one of the few nicely-colored ones), is built nicely, and has a solid feel. 5 chilis for quality. 4 for value. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Cratoni, and Bell | | Bike Setup: | 99 Jamis Dragon. | | Bottom Line: | I loved this helmet. It was beautiful (99colors at least), lightweight, and the rocklock system worked terribly well. One day, my little brother suckerd me on a urban assult ride after he had just watched KrankedIII. 1st big mistake on my part. My little brother, with balls the size of small planets, started hucking off of 12 steppers and walls on his hardtail in order to imitate the riders in the video. I, not to be outdone my by little bro. , Had to at least follow suit. second BIG mistake. After a sketchy landing off a 6 foot wall (on my XC ride...poor baby!) I went for a second try and things went all wrong. I went sideways in the air, my leg got caught in the front wheel, and I landed DIRECTLY on the back of my head, with 21 lbs of bike on top of that. As my head hit the ground, I could hear the foam crush, not just break or crack, but crush like it is supposed to. The back of the helmet, the pointy aero parts especially, were destroyed. My head was completely fine, in fact, I diddnt feel much of the impact at all. My arms were chewed up, and my leg had a nice encounter with a Raceface outer ring (5 bloody punctures). While I can tout the aerodynamics and visor system, blah blah blah..all day long, the fact is that I would probably be being spoonfed right now if i wasn't wearing it. Yeah its pricey, and I'm sure cheaper helmets would do the job, but I know it saved me so I'll have no problem plunking down a good chunk of cash on my next one. The Exodus is the top of the line Giro ATB helmet, so its gotta be as good or better. The Boreous doesn't look as good as the Exodus. Its probably design for road cyclist because it lacks a visor. I think riders are more likely to strap on their helmet if it looks cool on their head ,this helmet defianantly looks cool and with 21 vents it feels cool. | | Weaknesses: | Visor will break loose. I fixed mine with some double sided tape or mirror tape underneath the velcro tape. Put one layer under velcro on the visor and one the helmet. The thickness of mirror tapes should snug up the velcro preventing it from slipping. | | Bike Setup: | Schwinn Homegrown Factory, Marzocchi Z1 X-Fly , & Spinergy wheels. | | Bottom Line: | The visor breaking loose problem can be resolved with the purchase of some double sided mirror tape at your local hardware store. I purchased a new 2000 Exodus from Planetoutdoors.com and used one of their coupons in conjunction with a sale they had; $73 shipped!
The new visor is tons better than the old velcro/sticky deal; that broke on me quickly.

I have had this helmet for two years, so I've had time to really test it. This is hands down the best ventilated helmet on the planet, and looks great. When the roc-loc is working, it's awesome. So here go the problems:First, for $150 (which I doubt anyone actually paid), you should get a stiffer visor with better attachment. With one velcro attachment and two snaps, this thing was always coming loose and bent easily. After one ride, I attached more velcro, which worked fairly well but over time came loose. Finally, I riveted the visor on--now it stays put and I've got that industrial look (so much for the warranty).Second, after two years, one of the velcro attachments for the roc-loc has come off, and I'm having the damndest time getting a new one to stay put. I cleaned the surface well and last night superglued a velcro pad on--we'll see how it works. Without the roc-loc, the helmet falls into my face. Bummer. Plus, the roc-loc sometimes comes loose now.I give the Exodus 5 turds for looks and 6 for ventilation. Two turds for the cheap visor and 3 for long-term durability. If I have to buy a new helmet, it will be another Exodus, only because my head overheats quickly and I need the ventilation. Plus, I can get last year's model in orange! | Overall Rating: |

First off, I have to concede to GIRO, the title of fashion maven of helmets. The Exodus is a fantastic helmet, functionally and aestheticly. That is why it pains me so much to do this. I can't wear my Exodus anymore. After about 10 miles, the front ridge of the helmet presses into the top of my forehead, to the point of exasperation. To the point where I want to turn around and go home. It is so frustrating to be out on the trail rigging your helmet to be at least somewhat comfortable for the haul home. I have tried extra pads, which only increase the tension on the forehead. Of course there is the loosening of the Roc Loc, but then you are waging a compensatory battle and the great GIRO fit is compromised. I likewise feel that for 150 bucks I should not have to rig my helmet, it is purely unacceptable. But the helmet is not the problem, my skull is. Unfortunately, an exclusive mold for my head would be exorbitant at the very least, but then i could always chisel off an 1/8 of an inch off my cranium. I am going to miss my Exodus, but the last thing I want to worry about on a ride is my head. Aside from this the only other gripe, which is minor, is the visor attachment. The Specialized King Cobra's have a pretty marvy attachment.GIRO, the Exodus gets 5 for being the best helmet, hands down. However, you will only get 3 because I can't wear it anymore. | Overall Rating: |

I got an Exodus two months ago. The Red/Cream colour is nice, it's not too flashy and it matches my bike. This thing is sweet. Sometimes I can't believe that I'm actually wearing a helmet because so much air is flowing through my hair. I used to have a decent Specialized helmet but there is a world of difference with the Giro. I mean the Exodus never even budges on my head after I do up the straps. The RocLok 3 system is great. I've raced several races and ride quite often, taking my fair share of spills, and helmet doesn't even have a mark, dent or ding on it. Another thing that I noticed was the sweat wicking pads. My old helmet didn't have them so I had to wear a sweatband to keep sweat out of my eyes. The pads in the Exodus soak up tons of sweat and dry quickly. Sure the helmet is expensive but, take my word for it, it's not overpriced. You pay for amazing quality and attention to detail which other helmets can't offer. | Overall Rating: |

Just put it on lock the rockloc3, and it's stuck to your head. then all you have to do is snap the chin straps and you set for a nice ride. I actualy found that this helmet kept me coler, compared to my trek helmet. So i'll give it 5 stars untill it lets me down. Chip B. | Overall Rating: |

The Giro Exodus is a great helmet. The ventilation is the best that I've ever felt, and for me that's the most important. These things are also stylin'...looks good and feels great--a good combo! My only beef is that they could've found a better way to keep the visor on. I would've said that it's expensive but I saw that most good, current-year helmets are about the same price. | Overall Rating: |

I'm going to add the list of great reviews for this helmet. Fit is excellent - the Roc Loc 3 works very well. I can put this helmet on, tighten the Roc Loc, leave the strap off and shake my head upside down and this helmet will NOT come off! THAT is a good fit. (Of course, I ride with the helmet securely fastened underneath my chin) I also like the extended coverage in the back - makes me feel safe. Great looks, too.My only gripe: the visor attachment, while functional, could be improved.Buy the '97 model if you can find it and save yourself a few bucks ($50-60). Officially, I give it 4 1/2 chillis (subtract 1/2 flaming chilli for the visor attachment that could be improved), so I'll round up to a 5. | Overall Rating: |

Just got my Exodus for a reduced price from Giro's crash replacement department. Lemme start by saying that this is a great looking helmet and extremely well-ventilated. It does run cooler (although not by a great amount) than other helmets I've worn. And the RocLoc 3's zipper fastener works great by allowing easy tightening and loosening of the helmet within seconds.. Now let me pick some nits. This is by far the largest (in terms of material volume) I've ever worn, and is fairly heavy as a result. It seems like Giro had to add extra material so it could carve the many vents into it. The rear of the helmet seems a bit overbuilt to me also. I think Giro should offer more intermediate sizes other than the three (XS/S, S/M, L/XL sizes) it has. My head seems to be in between (Bell medium fits perfectly).. And the price! My god, I dont think I would have paid full retail on this thing, no matter how sweet the styling. The Bell Tsunami Pro is still the value champ in my book..So five stars for styling and ventilation, minus one for bulk, and another one for cost. I don't think any cross-country helmet should cost more than $110, tops. | Overall Rating: |

If the $150 pricetag of the Exodus doesn't scare you, why not go all out and get the Giro Switchblade? This lid is sweet. It offers the comfort and fit of the Exodus with the flexibility and added protection of an attachable chin bar, making it a light-weight full-face helmet. The awesome Giro Mad Max is just too heavy and hot to wear for XC purposes. The Switchblade is the perfect choice for the rider who desires additional protection with minimal comfort penalty. I feel more confident wearing the Switchblade and I am more willing to attack technical sections. Although the chin bar is removable, I usually wear the lid in its full-face configuration since it is remarkably comfortable. What a product! The only thing that sucks is the price ($190). But what else is new? | Overall Rating: |

I have to say that this helmet really fits great on my head. No shaking or unwanted tilting courtesy of the Roc Loc 3. Price is steep but worth the money to protect the squishy thing up stairs. One gripe is the visor attachment. It seems pretty cheesy for such an expensive bucket. | Overall Rating: |

After reading all these glowing reviews, I've noticed no one mentioned being bothered by the three prominate ridges that this helmet has, that hit you right on the forehead. I've found these to be annoying. I've had to add more brow padding and I wear a heavier sweatband to overcome this fault. But at this price I shouldn't have to be jury-rigging my helmet. The Exodus does have good ventelation but so do others in the Giro line. And $150 retail is way too much to pay when Giro sells others that are nearly as good. I've switched to the Gila and the only thing that it has that isn't as good as the Exodus is the Roc Loc 3 and that isn't worth paying double the price for. Plus the Gila fits much better on the brow. 3 chilis for the style and fit, 2 chilis for value for the money. Buy the Gila and use the $80 bucks you save for other things. | Overall Rating: |

This helmet is the BEST helmet I've owned. I've gone through four models in the past 4 years and I have to say that if you want a well ventilated helmet that fits like a glove, great visor positioning and attachment, then look no further! Although the price may be a little steep, if I can spend $200 on a pair of cycling shoes, I sure as hell can spend the same amount to protect my noggin. Adjustment buckles are quick to adjust which is also a bonus or should I say, an expectation. Without a doubt, this is one heck of a lid!! | Overall Rating: |

I just purchased my Giro Exodus helmet about three weeks ago. After I had the helmet adjusted (my wife adjusted it for me while still on my head), I'd have to admit this... This is the best fitting, best looking, best ventilating helmet I have every used! Actually, this is the second helmet I have ever owned. My first was an old 1982 Avenir that I used up to the point I bought my Giro Exodus. Quite a jump in technology! The $150.00 price is a bit steep but if one shops around (i.e. mail order), screaming deals can be had for 1997 models which are identical, barring the cosmetics. I bought mine for $79.00 from Pricepoint (www.pricepoint.com). | Overall Rating: |

Purchased the Exodus as a replacement for the Air Banshee I cracked. I was pleased with the Air Banshee, but this helmet is MUCH nicer -- better fit; vents work better (just enough air moves through); sweat band actually works; visor adjusts easily. These helmets run bug. Wore a L/XL Banshee, but went to a S/M for the Exodus. With the exception of color, the '97 and '98 are identical....so, if you don't mind having an outdated color, save yourself 40 - 50 bucks and get the '97 model. | Overall Rating: |

Very good helmet. I had a giro ricochet before this one. That was actually my first helmet. After a while it sucked more and more (wrong size too, broken visor). So after a long period of doubt, I bought an exodus. Should have done it sooner. fits really good. yes it is expensive. but if you buy a cheap not that well fitting helmet three things can happen: 1- you accidently forget your helmet when you go out biking 2- you just leave it at home cause you don't like it. 3- you crash cause wearing it causes too much irritation and you cannot concentrate. or it slides in front of your eyes.So in my opinion: buy a good helmet or don't buy one at all.The roc loc 3 rulez. | Overall Rating: |

Ventilation is so good, I have to be careful to put sunscreen on the bare spots on top of my head. Super Kool colors.- - - MINUS - - - Spec wt of 11 oz is for a size small. XL weighs around 14-15 oz. Bought the '97 Exodus model in the Metal Plates color scheme a few months ago for about $90. At that price, it's a great buy. At the regular price, I would have opted for a less expensive Bell helmet, which I also liked and fit well.Pluses: The Roc-Loc III is excellent. The Exodus style sticks out among the cookie-cutter styles. The ventilation is great. The color schemes are cool.Minuses: I could not get the perfect size, the combined L/XL size was slightly too big and the M size was too small. I wish Giro would have offered a separate L and a XL size. The straps sometimes loosen on their own, and will creep up to the ear at times, which is annoying. I don't even use the cheap visor.Overall, this is the most comfortable helmet I tried. The fact that I don't notice it when I ride is the best praise I could give it. | Overall Rating: |

I bought at $117 vs. $80 price mentioned by other reviewers and still think helmet is great value. I actually believe marketing BS that head protection is worth a premium, especially after cracking two helmets in half and breaking several big bones and still having most of my brain intact. Exodus helmet fit and protection seems best in business. Big air vents and channels are a huge benefit particularly if you earn your downhills with climbing. I also like the visibility of the Orange version and the newer two tones look trick. So this helmet gets 5 chillis for high function, safety, honking ventilation, and stylie points. Biggest compliment is that competitors are now copying Giro Exodus features and looks. | Overall Rating: |

Slipt this helmet on and it fit like a glove, don't even need to use any adjusting pads and that roc-lok 3 system is top notch. I have taken a couple of spills directly onto the head (don't laugh... :-) and this helmet came away with little more than some dust on the outside. You can't beat the fit, because the helmet has so many adjustments. If you can find this helmet for under $100, you will not find anything better. Plus, it looks cool... ;-) | Overall Rating: |

I had looked at a lot of helmets before purchasing the Exodus. I got it at Performance Bike Shop in Laguna Cal. I picked it up cheap in the US. I really like it. It fits heaps well, and the Gripper Zipper on the rear allows for great on the head adjustment. The straps do stretch with sweat, which is a bit annoying, but I can live with it. The cooling is great, and it looks awesome, allowing me to show off to my friends with my cool helmet. I haven't tested it in a stack onto my head yet, which is good, but it does have a crash replacement warranty. The Hardbody thingy makes it quiet resilient(?) to small dings. My only worry is leaving it in a too hot place and having it melt.Very Good overall

Got this helmet on sale at the BEST bike shop in town (Arizona Bike Experts) plus my insurance company gave me a rebate, total cost $95.00.Looks - 4.5 - I'm getting used to it. I like the color Red/Cream. Fit - 4.0 - If I use a headband and a bunch of those blue sizing pads it almost fits perfectly. The chin strap can be a little uncomfortable when tightened and I can't wear earings because of the Tri-Loc strap guides. Design - 5.0 - The In-Mold design is top quality, the rear of the helmet appears to give excellent back of head protection. The Roc-Loc 3 is sweet. Cost - 3.0 - You should be able to score this helmet for under $130.00. Company - 5.0 - If I trash this helmet it will only cost $50.00 to replace under the replacement program. This is nice. total - 4.3 but I had to give it a 5.0 because it's a pretty good product.

I have been using this helmet for 1 year now. Overall, I like it a lot. It is very comfortable and stays stable on your head in the rough stuff. But, as with other Giros, the strap tightens up quite a bit when dry, and loosens a lot when it gets wet (sweaty). It has a cheesey visor and is expensive. Am I being picky? Yes. But this thing costs 150 bucks! Funny how I rarely see folks on MTBR trash products that they spent too much money on. I am giving this a 4.0 rating only because I can't give it a 3.5. | Overall Rating: |

But its a great way to keep your insides inside and keep cool on a hot summer day. The visor was cheap too, but that doesnt do much good anyways. About the cost issue: $150 for a helmet isn't all that bad when you consider how much the entire hobby costs you. HOWEVER, what a real crime it is to sell a glorified piece of foam with some extra plastic for incredibly huge profit margin multiples. The marginal cost of producing an Exodus must be near $10, maybe less. Yes, you have to recoup R&D expenses and manufacturer/retail profit incentives, but the whole high-end helmet industry fetches far, far too much for their products. Foam is cheap, hard-bonded with plastic or not. Yes, you can buy a $20 no-name helmet, but it is unbelievable how many of these cheap helmets don't comfortably fit a human head. What can be so difficult in producing an inexpensive, effective, comfortable and desirable skid lid? Entreprenuers: Exploit this gross market inefficiency and cash in! | Overall Rating: |
