Favorite Trail:Chubb Trail
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $50.00
Purchased At:www.ptownsports.com
Strengths:I really like the style and the comfort.
Weaknesses:I personally haven't found any.
Similar Products Used:none. This is the first helmet I ever bought and so far I haven't had to replace it.
Bike Setup:Trek Fuel 98 w/ Rock Shox Psylo SL Front Fork, Rock Shox SID rear sock.
Bottom Line:I went out for my first ride mtb'n on the Chubb trail on my new Mongoose bike without a helmet and about 45 minuetes later With no reflectors left on the bike, a broken chain and racing heart we found our selves at the bike shop getting a new chain and a new helmet. I bought this helmet on clearance since I liked the style and the fit was good, a plus was the color matched my bike too.

I have had this helmet for years and years now and never had to use it, knock on wood. Hope to never have to come back and tell you how well it worked in a crash.

The reason I am here to post is this is due to the fact that the pads have warn out and I am trying to find a set to replace them. Wish me luck!

Strengths:Light weight
Weaknesses:Velcro straping system need to be reajust every ride. Look funny compared to newer model.
Similar Products Used:Lower grade Bell
Bottom Line:To this day, this helmet has performed as well as the day I bough it, about 6 years ago. At the time, this elmet was the best money could buy. I have never liked the way it look on my head but I feel secure and when I am biking I tend to forget about the helmet, which is a good thing. The internal strapping system needed improvement and I beleive that Bell addressed the problem in their latest model. Bottom line, this was a solid top of the line helmet that still perform well and unfortunately, I still have no good reason to buy another one.

Strengths:great fit, reasonably light
Weaknesses:permanently attached visor
Similar Products Used:several Bell, Giro
Bike Setup:FS: Giant NRS 1, Hardtail: Schwinn Moab 1, Road: Miyata 912
Bottom Line:Have been using this as my primary helmet for four seasons, and it was due for retirement. It was forced into that mode after it saved me from a life threatening injury in late October, 2002. I took a header in rough, loose rock, downhill terrain 14 miles from our vehicle. Landed head first, then shoulder, then hip. Helmet cracked thru 1/3 of the way around, but totally absorbed the shock of the impact. No bump or anything else on my head. Shouler dislocated and grade 3 (complete) separation. Hip contusion. Any helmet that delivers protection in this type of crash is tops in my book!

Date Reviewed: June 1, 2002
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Fits well... decent venting... reasonably strong... lightweight... has a visor... stays put.
Weaknesses:Pads funnel sweat right into my face... strap loosens regularly on it's own.
Similar Products Used:Giro something
Bike Setup:Two wheels that go round and round
Bottom Line:I've had this helmet for a long time now and am happy with it's perfromance for those years. I like having a part or accessory that just stays out of the way and that's what this helmet does. No ackward fit or shifting -- even in heavy terrain. Well built and low-key to boot.

The Evo has protected my head well from, of all things, low-hanging foilage. Only once has it crash-protected my noggin but countless times has prevented my head from being scalped by merciless mongrel trees. When I did manage to test crash the lid, it did well protecting the back of my head from a good run-in with an evil tree.

I don't know if the pads I have in the helmet are the originals, but they do a good job of pouring sweat onto my face. Very annoying since I sweat like a wet sponge and even more annoying as it gets on the riding glasses. I guess there's really no where for the sweat to go so it's how it is.

Overall, a good helmet. I don't even know if Bell makes this model anymore so I don't think this reveiw is worth squat, but who cares.

Strengths:good fit
Bottom Line:This is a great helmet. The full nelson system fits your head very nicely. It has lots of air ports, and it looks nice.

I can honestly say this helmet saved my life. I came out of a trail way too fast to the parking lot and ended up crashing head first onto the pavement. The helmet cracked in half and I was knocked unconscious for about five minutes. If It were not for this helmet I would have cracked open my skull and torn off my right ear. I actually perchased the same helmet to replace the broken one.

This helmet is not very expensive either. It used to cost about $80 when it was new. Now it has been around a while you can get it for less than half as much.

I recomend this helmet for those who don't want to spend a fortune, but want to save their brain.

Strengths:
Great look (VERY aliens looking, gets lots of compliments), samller profile than most helmets, snap on visor that doesnt take off during a high speed descent, thinner straps, FusionFit, color, heck, I bet the guy that did the QA on it was even wearing clean socks!
Weaknesses:
None so far
Similar Products Used:

Bike Setup:
Bike? What bike? I like to put it on and walk around town! J/K
Bottom Line:Great great helmet....never thought I'd wax poetic about headgear, but here it is! I think the list price is a bit too high, but I got mine for dealer cost, so I'm not complaining....fit right out of the box was incredible, and doesnt have a tendancy to tip forward (like the Exodus).
The snap on visor is perfect (if you've ever had to walk back UP a hill cause the damn velcro on your visor let go, you'll understand), and the FusionFit is second to none! Tried several other models, but they all seem to follow Specialized's lead....their testers must have very narrow heads, since all their helmets start to squeeze the snot right out your face after a few minutes.
I like it so much I bought two, one orange (matches my manitou) and one blue (matches the lettering on my bike....yeah, I'm a fashion god)In short, 5 fiery poos! (Guys, they look nothing like stars....)

Bottom Line:This a good helemt. I orginally bought one w/ the full nelson and the quick wick pads, but later found one on sale in mail-order catalog in a color I liked (Bright Red vs. Navy blue). my new has the fusion-fit (lots better) and is plain evo (no visor :(, but no quick wick! :)) Hint: the Evo2 comes with two sets of pads, the Quick Wick, which is the one piece bright green thing, and regular pads. thorw out the quck wick and put the regular pad in. As previous posters have noted, the Quick Wickpad does not the way Bell would have believe, i.e. it drips sweat form alll over the place, rather than just at the corners. this is real problem, espiecally if you wear prescription glasses like I do. If you're interestd, you should check the various mail-order palces, as it seems like someone is always having a hlf-off slae on them (mine came from Campmor)

Bottom Line:I only had my $39.00 Supergo special for 6 months, but I will get another if I can find it. I ate a double helping of a 'dirt sandwich' with a boulder garnish, last night on Sisar in Ojai. While switching lanes on a long downhill stretch of double track and doing about 15 to 20 mph, a rock (18 dia. x 7 tall with straight sides) just absolutely cleaned my bike out from under me so fast that it's just a blur. Never saw it coming. My body feels like I just spent a long lustful night with the Marquis de Sade and his long handled meat tenderizer. My Evo Pro is trashed (cracked and dented). My face got some scrapes and I won't go through the rest of the injury report since this is a helmet review. This helmet did it's job admirably and despite some minor annoyances, an Evo Pro is going to get the nod again (pun intended) as well as five flaming stanky steampiles for a great (at any price) safety device. Like their ads used to say: $10.00 helmet, $10.00 head!

Bottom Line:This helmet is well engineered and fits pretty well. I completely disagree that it is well ventilated, however. I find it to have POOR air flow, and it has a propensity to force sweat right down the middle of your face. I find myself constantly pushing the the front part of the helmet down to squeegy sweat out of the pads. As compared with helmets that have center/forehead vents, this helmet leaves a lot to be desired. The securing straps are also really thin which makes it feel less solid than others I've used.

Ummmmmm...........I am reviewing a helmet right? Then why the hell does the bike setup matter. A helmet goes on your head, at least from what I've learned in life.
Bottom Line:This helmet looks good, is light, and fits very well. The only problem is the so-called sweat guards. They don't do a friggin thing! People are always asking if I am crying when I fly past them, but the truth is that the sweat from my head blows right past the sweat guards and right into my eyes. Anyway, I have a funny-shaped head so I guess it doesn't work right for me. But I reccomend it. FIVE BURNING TURDS!!!!!!!!!

Just got this helmet to replace this really old style one I had which made me look like I was wearing a mushroom cap. The old one didn't really fit either, so I doubt it was more than just serving as a placebo. I bought the EVO2 Pro Fusion 98 model for $39 at Universal. This helmet is obviously very stylish and vents well. But the most important thing to consider when buying a helmet is fit. I learned this the hard way when I ordered a size too small the first time. I could feel a lot of pressure around my temporal lobes and I'd try to bear it but after about 30 minutes I felt like that dude in The Telltale Heart who keeps hearing an incessant heartbeat. The pain just kept throbbing. Well now I have the correct size and it feels great. Now I'll be stylin in my new helmet.

The helmet looks awesome, and fits well. I've bumbed my head on several minor falls, and the helmet's protected me each time. My only gripe is the crappy construction of the Roc Loc (or whatever) feature - the glue tends to wear off the velcro which provides the anchoring points for the retention system. If Bell redesigned this feature, I'd have no problem giving this helmet a five chilli rating. However, the EVO 2 PRO will have to settle for 4.

Bell is a great company. I had an Avalanche Pro and crashed denting the helmet. My LBS gave me the Bell 800 number and they told me to send it back and they would replace it with an Evo 2 Pro, because they no longer made the Avalanche, for $30. I had my new helmet in two weeks with a certificate that declared I was Saved by the Bell that I proudly display in my home.
The Evo2 Pro helmet is great!! It fits good, it vents good, and if you scan the catalogs around the end/begining of the year you can find it for $50 or less.(as of this posting Performance has it for $49.99) All my riding buddies wear them and have no complaints. I've crashed many times and Bell helmets have always come through. The only helmet I've worn, the only one I will wear because it works. I know first hand.

In the beginning I bought this helmet based on a perfect fit, comfort, and appearance. When I took it out in the trail, the ventilation was good, and I could feel the wind on my head, keeping me cooler on hot days. The helmet also remained secure, without moving on my head when riding. It stays place! Today, I realized the REAL reason for donning a helmet. I crashed bad when going downhill on an icy section of the trail and flipped, hitting the back of my head HARD on the ice. The sound of the impact was loud--a BANG! The only effects on me, thanks the the helmet, were a brief headache and a moment of feeling stunned. The helmet saved me today!!! Thanks BELL. This is the real reason why we should all wear helmets when we mtn bike. I recommend the EVO Pro2 without hesitation.

I guess I'm one of the droves of folks who refuse to pay a hundred bucks for a recycled Schlitz beer cooler to wear on my head. So I forked over $40 to Supergo, and off I went. My EVO2 is a '97 model, and I have few complaints about the Full-Nelson retention system, although my helmet does have a little play in it from front to back. I had a Psycho Pro before this one that seemed to fit my noggin a little better than the EVO2. This one seems to mold better to regular- to melon-size heads, not narrow, pointy heads like mine. But that only allows me ample room to use a sweatband, since the Quickwick system quickly floods with sweat and it begins to run into your eyes or glasses. It may sound like I'm nagging this helmet, but I actually love it. The ventilation is great, it doesn't look ridiculous like Bell's new $150 helmet and I mostly forget about it and concentrate on riding. I don't know if the absence of the Snell rating is cause for concern, but I'd like to see it get back into Bell's helmets nonetheless. Kudos to Bell for a reasonable crash replacement policy ($30 for this model, I believe). Overall, a very good helmet that is damn sure worth it if you can snag one for less than fifty bucks.

I have the 97 model, which right off the bat ha one flaw: The retention system stinks. Other than that, the helmet is great. It's light, has plenty of vents, and looks pretty trick. I plan on purchasing a new one with the new style retention system, which appears to be much bettter.

After blowing the rest of life out of my image pro helmet, I decided to invest in a new one. Unfortunately, I missed out on the supergo sale (only small and large left) so I had to pay retail, but I don't like the '97 full nelson retention anyway. The velcro wore out on my image pro and the retention wouldn't stay in place. The new '98 cam-loc is extremely good. Tons of coverage with no slippage. Also, the orange color looks so good despite the fact that it doesn't match my bike at all. The only gripe I have is of the visor - much too low for my personal taste and it can't be adjusted upwards. I solved the problem with by using a little tape under two parts of the visor, but I don't know how well it will hold up. The pads and quick wick system seem to work very well. Bell provides a nice selection. The crash-replacement warranty also looks very good, although I hope to never use it. In terms of ventage, the helmet is very cool. Despite the visor gripe, I think this helmet deserves 5 chilis due to its quality and bell's crash replacement policy.

I had the opportunity to make two long trips with my new Bell Evo 2 Pro helmet, and am very pleased with it. The helmet weights next to nothing. The body is fused to the outer shell. The visor works great. The brow sweat feature works well. The adjustment system works quite well, and even though mine is a Dec'97 edition, and has the velcro adjustment, I locked-in a perfect fit by taking one stitch on each side. My new helmet is replacing a 12-year old Bell V1 Pro, which weights about 5 times as much, but is Snell rated. My guess is that Snell is critical for motorcycle helmets but an overkill for a bicycle, and nearly impossible to achieve on a 9.8 oz helmet. Now I always wear a helmet, whereas before I forgot about it half the time! A helmet has to be good if it is to be used, and this helmet is better than all that checked.

I was in an off road accident on July 2nd and ended up in the hospital
overnight. I don't remember anything about where I was riding, or any
details of the crash. No doubt my EVO2 Pro helmet saved my life, but I'm
disappointed that Bell isn't certifying thier helmets to the Snell B-95
standards. I'm going to toss out my Bell helmet in favor of one that meets
the more stringent standards. I'm probably going to buy a Qranc Reactor. Otherwise, I was happy with the EVO2's appearance and amount of air flow I received while riding. However, the chin strap needed constant re-adjustment and the retention system overall seems poorly designed. The helmet tends to slide forward in a head first crash even though the retention system was adjusted properly. I'm only giving this helmet one Chili since Bell is not using the Snell rating system!

One year later and I'll update my original review: .... Excellent helmet EXCEPT for the crappy velcro rocloc rear retention (whatever its called) system on my 1997 Evo 2. The velcro pads on the inside of the helmet shell are barely wider than a pencil, so the velcro doesn't hold and the retention system quickly comes out of adjustment. This wasn't a big problem at first but as the velcro gets worn it gets annoying. Bell fixed this problem for the '98 helmets, but I'd stay away from the discounted '97's that are so tempting. Oh, and the regular pads brow pads work at least as well as the quick wick ones. Otherwise a decent but expensive helmet.

I´ve been riding it for a few months now and I can tell you nothing but good things about it. The orange color really rules. At the price of 690 FIM(Finnish marks = about 115 $. Expensive, ain´t it?) it is a lot cheaper than Giro Exodus
(1100 FIM) but works as good. This is a great helmet with a great price.

I purchased this helmet about a year ago for $95. Then I see Supergo is closing out the 97 models for $39. I picked up one for my girlfriend. the Java color is not really Java its more like a dark silver or titanimum, went great with the decals on her Univega. The new burnt orange color is also very hot!!Anyway I have used mine for about a year and have had zero problems. The velcro at the back looks like it is starting to peel away from the foam though. You would also thing that Bell would offer a helmet bag to protect it between rides....Dont hang the helmet from the full nelson part at the rear from a door knob as I have in the past. I think that is what is contributing to the velcro coming up.

I'm a big Giro fan; have owned alot of them and currently ride with the Exodus. But I wanted a lighter colored helmet.
Got mine at REI for a bit more than all my friends. Ironically, I told a dozen of my friends about the $39 deal and they all got one at that price. But now everyone seemed to be out of my size and color except REI so I payed $59. Oh well, got it locally so I saved a tiny bit on shipping and waiting.Anyway, the adjustibility is incredible and the fit and styling are nice.
The crash replacement warranty is $20 less than Giro! Very nice.
Although I like the Giro's straps better due to their slightly wider width.Glad I purchased this instead of a $92 Helios or $110 Boreas.

In fact the vents are so large my hair will occasinally stick out of them which gets me some strange looks. The pad in the front of the helmet soaks up the sweat quite well so that I don't have any problems with sweat dripping and smearing all over my sunglasses. Overall this is one great helmet. Damn thing keeps in all the heat vapors in compared to this one. The vents let in huge amounts of air in the front and back that you can feel. The exoskeleton design is cool and attracts lots of attention (I sport my helmet around my school). The quick wick is fine because I don't really sweat and the helmet fits like a snugly. NOTE: When looking for a helmet try them all until you put the one on that makes you feel funny all over, if not, keep looking. And make sure it is snug, check this by putting the helmet on without locking the straps and leaning over. Looks ok (a little 'big' looking for me), build quality just ok - not exceptional, feels well vented and cool....butThat crap 'Quickwick' system is a product design disaster. On any serious ride the pad overloads and proceeds to pump a flood onto the inside of my glasses, face and very accurately into my eyes. On a training ride this is annoying but in a race it really sucks (check the streams down Paul Rowney's face (he's wearing an EVO2pro) on the cover of the July MBA).So my dog had some fun chewing up the quickwick pad. However, because the thinnest ordinary pads that Bell supplied were too thick to fit over a thin sweatband (now there's a system that works) I had to take a scalpel and halve the front pads for thickness. Now things are working ok but this sort of fix is crap for a helmet in this price range and is a serious chilli reducer.

A good helmet, as it should be for being Bell's most expensive XC offering. I'd looked at the Giro Exodus and the Cratoni before buying the Bell, and feature for feature preferred the Exodus. But, I must have a Bell head, because the Evo plain fit me the best. For me thats the most important criteria in a helmet, so I bought it. The Evo is not the coolest helmet around, ventilation wise. There are a tremendous number of vents -- at first glance it looks like most of the helmet is vent space -- but the actual surface area where air can get at your head isn't particularly large. The straps are thin, which is a mixed blessing. A wider strap feels less like a choke collar when tight, but a narrower one is less obtrusive and cooler if its not tight enough to gag. Fitting system is great, though the Exodus is superior I think (though it still didn't make it fit as well as the Evo).I'll give it 4 stars because its a great helmet, but Bell has left some room for improvement.
