The new 4 piston Downhill brake by Hope Technology is the most revolutionary braking system ever made. The DH4 uses a totally open system that provides drag free, self adjusting performance. This brake provides more power than any other brake out there, yet offers superior modulation.

If you're using these discs and are having trouble bleeding them, get the bleed kit off hope as it's a lot better (although pretty expensive).
Also if you want to improve performance (less pump up & less bleeding to do) then switch to DOT 5.1, I did this summer in Morzine and noticed my brakes worked a lot better than last year with DOT 4.

They are British, they are manufactureed to excelent standards. They stop you with one finger!!! And have stopped being made as single crown fork users were using them only to find that they are so powerful they bent the forks!!!
These disks rule....Period, There isn't a brake out there yet that can stop a 50lb Downhill bike as fast as these and offer as much feel and confidence. I used to live 200yards from the Hope factory over here in the UK. I had a BIG crash one day, totally recked my Big'un hub and damaged the pipe leading into the caliper. I went to see Hope to buy some parts to fix the damage as everything was out of waranty apart from my DH4. Hope wouldn't sell me anything!!, they replaced everything free of charge. How good is that for customer service. Steve Peat was furious to know that GT wouldn't let him run Hope last year. This year he's on Hope, Say no more. British at it's best, brin it on.....

I painstakenly debated spending the money on these brakes. No one in my area uses Hope so I had to go by what I read in this forum. Thanks. I must say these brakes perform like nothing I've used so far. One finger is all you need for all the breaking power you can handle. Keep your hands on the bars, not the brakes on those hammering descents. For those of you out there considering what to buy next look no further. I know it's painful but just drop the cash, you wont regret it. Are these brakes British? No wonder my bike wants to stop at every durn tea plant on the trail and sniff around. Happpy trails!

Before I bought these somewhat pricey brakes I did some research. Look at the reviews on this site, what do you see? The Hope disc brakes are the ONLY ones to get consistently good reviews. And for good reason. These things are godlike in their power. With V-Brakes you get wet noodle braking. With Hope Disc you get the manly testosterone braking you deserve. Ever wanted to do stoppies or find a need to actually stop on that mindbending downhill before you eat it at 40mph into a fallen tree? I put the DH4 on my front wheel and the open 2 on my back wheel (what am I, Mr. Money Bags?). These things will squeak a little bit at first but after a couple weeks of solid riding they'll whisper. Besides, the squeak tells everyone below you to GET OUT OF THE WAY OR BE MAULED! I used to tap on the brakes to give a heads up to hikers that otherwise would be oblivious of my approach. But alas! no more squeaking. Simply put, if you're going to buy disc brakes, don't wuss out and get some mechanical or crappy Hayes hydraulic. Get the real thing. Get the Hope. 5 flaming poops all around for the most outstanding piece of gear on my bike.

Support from Hope could not be better, I spent 30 minutes chatting to them on the phone about what brakes I should choose for my style of riding before they recomended their mid cost Enduro's, only weight freaks and racers should use the XC4 was their opinion, everyone else should go with either the Minis or the Enduro's.

Bottom Line:
Yes, the DH4 is the best disc brake on earth right now, period. I used them on an 29 lb. XC freerider, and any 100 lb. rider would enjoy the effortless stopping as much as my 190 lbs. They have more power than needed, but never too much due to the moto-like modulation, meaning they actually modulate, as opposed to the others which come on to fast. HOPE customer service was friendly, heads above Hayes, not to mention shimano. The customer service at Airbomb.com was the best I've ever had on the net. The brakes fit and functioned better than all the other disc's I've used, with zero setup. Visually sicker than everything else. Ajustable reach that really adjusts. Self adjusting pistons. Harder rotors than all the others.
Finally, one finger breaking (front wheelies), honestly these brakes are the best gear I've ever used and I ride better and SAFER because of them. I could care less what they weigh. My freeride 5-banger is still sub 29 lbs.

Strengths:
This brake has incredible stopping power. Modulation is good and a 2 year old would probabilly be able to lock a wheel up with these babies.
Weaknesses:
On my brakes bleeding the brakes were a real problem as the lever just about bit when it was touching the bars. A quick return to hope was all that was needed and then they really started to peform. Also the rear rear caliper had to be changed as the seals on one side of the caliper were too tight and the pistons weren`t moving. They squeel ALOT! and the quality of the recent 4-pots doesn`t seem to be as high as the first production models.

Bike Setup:

Bottom Line:
These are top brakes if you can afford them and put up with the squeeling. Also bleeding should be left to the shop so I recommend getting them fitted at the shop.

Power! Still not fully bedded in yet but they keep getting better!! Hope are ace when it comes to support. They had to machine me a custom 175mm rotor because the mount on my frame was slightly in the wrong place but they sorted a new rotor in like 4 days. Theyve also got braided hoses like the new XT discs so they look cool, and the calipers are really fat and look great with 4 individual pads in them!
Weaknesses:
I had to buy new forks coz my old 98 Bombers had two formula mounts instead of an International Standard one! Boo Hoo.

Bottom Line:
Get a job at Halfords youll save a few quid using staff discount when you buy them. Mine do squeal a bit, but then theyre not bedded in yet (i only managed to fit the back yesterday) They go on really easily, I didnt need any shims or washers on the front, the caliper was centered right over the disc - brill THEY LOOK COOL. not that it matters much (yeah right) the lever feel is really good. probally not much good on an XC bike....

I did not bleed them since I got those O4´s and they are working really well...the lever pulls close to the handlebar so I first thought I will have to bleed it but do one ride and you will realize that after 3mm´s they start to grab the disk and over the whole lever travel you can modulate d@mn smooth.. BTW don´t expect too much from the first few braking manuvers...let it bed in..you will be surprised. f buy those brakes if u can afford them....

I got the Hopes through the mail from Rob at Singletrack on a Saturday morning. The postie nearly fell through the door as I ripped it open and signed the form before he had finished knocking! The discs slapped on no trouble. The rear hose was cut to route through the frame. Being lazy I still have not bled it since then and they are still going fine. After a 'digital' spell while they were bedding in they calmed down with a hand from some Yorkshire mud. Excellent stopping power and modulation without any fluid pump (even down Morzine and the Welsh Dragons).

EASY as hell TO SET UP. Only took 30 mins to set up. NO power bleeder needed, just some wrenches and two people-You don't have to be a brain surgeon to set these babys up! These brakes are STRONG AS HELL! A little better than my hayes brake. cheap too-at least for me(got 'em for half price from my sponsor).
Weaknesses:
Just a tad bit of drag-I will admit. But once I rode them a bit the drag went away. They came with the brake hose about a foot too short, so I ordered more, but its not like its the end of the world or anything.

Bottom Line:
I love 'em!!! I was able to custom make a rear disc adapter using stock aluminum from a hardware store(made two and bolted 'em together)-My frame IS a prototype which means that sometimes you gotta go the extra mile, but thats besides the point here. These are easy to use and easy to maintain. The DH4's pack a ton of stopping power and work great in all conditions. Everything about the brakes makes it user-friendly. Great fun to use and well worth the cash even if you don't get 'em through a sponsor like I did. I like the brake alot, ESPECIALLY for those SICK PLATTEKILL courses(WORLD CUP caliber courses). If you ride DH alot and/or in the mud alot, I'd get these brakes. They're a little heavy for XC use, but it may be worth the extra weight-If you really think it matters THAT much, maybe you should stop trying to take weight off your bike and start riding more-duh!! These brakes are worth a try at the least. If you have the chance(and the cash), go for it and buy a pair now!!

Strengths:
Power, low weight, pathetically easy to setup(you just bolt them on), no fade, good value at present, no maintenance.
Weaknesses:

Bottom Line:
Firstly, the person who said they have had these brakes 3 years, I got my Hope 04's one year ago, 2 months before they went into general release(go figure).
These brakes are very powerful, and I bought them because of the things I had heard about other disk brakes, but as I have had no long term experience with these other brakes I am in no position to comment. Also as I live in England there are no hills to really test these brakes, therefore I can't comment on heat build up and such like. What I do know is that since I put these on May 1999, I haven't bothered to touch them and they still run as they did when they were first worn in. I never find myself wanting more power, and always find the way the power is delivered perfectly. Those who complain about lack of modulation probably make thier full suspensions bob too, because they don't use them properly, all you have to do is adapt your style.
Everyone who can afford these brakes should own them.

Excellently machined, well designed and all round perfection. Open system -no drag ever (if you set them up right). The best modulation and power of any MTB disc in the world and there also very Reliable, I've had them for a while now and I haven't once had to touch them -which is kinda frustratin as I love to fiddle with stuff! The hope people are aslo very friendly and way helpful. Finally they're excellent value when you consider they're only 10 quid more than bloody Hayes at my local bike shop.
Weaknesses:
I notice a few people say they're a bit fiddly to setup, but hell compared to tuning ya forx up! (I own WB UD180s -which are good but a pain to tune-up).

Why the hell Tom and Brad from Surrey are bagging these brakes for I don't know! Brad's had them for 3 years -How? They've only been on sale for less than a year and I noticed Toms put his LX Vs back on his C'Dale SV DH -I'd love to know how, 'cos I've still got my old SV DH4000 and there's no brake bosses front or rear to put them on??? The Surrey two are spouting BS, ignore them, it's the lack of hills in Surrey!
Anyway I've rode tons of different brakes and I know a bit about engineering too, as I'm mastering in Automotive Engineering (prrrp!) and these brakes are the best yet. They're faultless if (and that's a big if) you setup them up properly, like everything in engineering; the better you set things up the better they perform. So do your self a favour; if your not to handy as a bike mechanic get a good shop to put 'em on ya bike and you'll have the best braking system in the world, now there's something to brag about with ya trail mates! Bouyakka!

these are the best brakes I've ever ridden. many of the downhill trails we ride out here are 5 miles or more in length. we also happen to live in a rain forest. I have never experienced water nor heat failure. Have a bike shop set them up, one with disc experience. They are sensitive, and require a little experience to get right. one of my rotors arrived slighlt warped, but I had to race that weekend, so I rode with them anyway. Not a problem. But you'll want to check carefully upon arrival. The best part about the brakes is the increased confidence while flying. you know that you can stop. It's worth a couple of seconds on a fast course, for sure. So far, they have been worth every penny. Just don't let your girlfriend try them. especially if she has an upcoming birthday. especially if she's gorgeous. (and loves to ride.) they'll set you back a fair bit! Trust me on this.

Don't listen to the guys below. Honestly Hope have got this thing sorted. The mountings are bomb proof, the guy below probably does not even own them. They are the best brakes I have ever used. Mine came with not enough oil in them but that was easily resolved. They come with Gold pads which is very good as the normal Pro's only come with Green. Hang on until the Shimano ones come out and these babies will be sooooo cheap and such a good buy then. Don't bother with the Shimano ones, remember all the hassle you had with their V brakes? They still have not got them right, just think of all the hassle you will have with their disks. First reports are that the Shimano have been having to alter the disk mounts on nearly every bike they have tried them on!! With Hope you just use a couple of spacers. A bit fiddly but who cares, the best things come to those who wait. The bottom line is that these are amazing, I used them at Innerleithen in the worst mud you could ever imagine and they were as powerful as in the dry. Get these NOW, or save money and get them in March. Buy the best, avoid the rest.

Bottom Line:
These are great brakes, once they are set up. To set them up, you must play with shims to get the caliper centered over the rotor. The clearance is so tight, the shims are about 0.1mm thick. On the rear, I had to go buy some shims, because I just couldn't get the ones supplied to work. Then I had to bleed them. They are supposed to be ready to bolt on from the factory, but my front went all the way to the bars, and the rear was very squishy. They take a special, impossible to find brake fluid called DOT 5.1, which I had to order from Hope. It then took about five tries, but we finally got them bled. Once they were sorted, they work great, although I haven't really pushed them on a long descent yet. The modulation is great, and they seem to have all the power needed to bring our tandem to a quick stop. The real test will be a long hard descent. They do heat up when pushed hard, so I'll have to see if they fade away, or hang in. One other problem. The rear brake line is too long. Shortening it means another round of bleeding, so I'll just wait until they need to be bled again. Four chilis instead of five, because I have to believe there is some kind of mounting system that would not require shims, and would allow easy centering. It would take some innovation sure, but for the cost these should be absolutely perfect.
