Strengths: Silky Smooth shifting and durability.Weaknesses: Ugly color...i re-painted the crank arms blackBottom Line: You can't find better cranks for it's price. Shimano XT will cost you at least $200 while XTR is above $400. I have a set of M960 XTR cranks and the only difference I notcice is in my pocketbook.

With Icon Graphite on my Trek STP 200 and Icon Onyx on my Trek 4300, all I can say is that these products have been given a bad rap. They are both well built and good looking. Sure you can go Easton or Thomson, but Icon made some very nice products that hold up well. I have put on over 1,500 miles on mud, sand, and water with no break-downs.

I have just purchased a late model Trek STP 200 with an ICON Graphite crank-set. It seems that the quality control problems this product have been taken care of in later versions. My usual 10 to 15 mile rides are through gravel, mud, and sand. This crank-set has given me no problems, and seems to be holding-up very well.
The ICON crank must be set up properly and used with the correct pedals. The RE-1's were replaced by Shimano M858's, which seem to work well with the ICON Graphite offering. In addition, the LX/XT combination must be in proper working order. If the afore-mentioned action items are in place, then expect to enjoy a smooth shifting and reliable drivetrain for most types of riding.
For "Hard Trail" riders , the Shimano XT or Shimano XTR crank-sets are the products of choice. These offerings are far stronger than the ICON, and can take much more abuse.
In a nutshell, if you set-up your ICON Graphite crank-set and supporting components properly, then expect a good ride. But if you need a more robust crank-set, then go down to your Shimano dealer and pick-up their XT or XTR offerings.

PS: The ICON Graphite is far better than the Alivio offering by Shimano, and seems to be on par with their Deore product line.

Strengths: NoneWeaknesses: The chainrings are the worst ever. Flat out dangerous. I know 3 sets of these that have bent rings on first uphll climbs. Novice riders all.You will hurt yourself if these are on your bike. Go buy a set of LX cranks. Cheap and durable as hell.Bottom Line: Trek should be embarassed for even buying this company. It might explain why the new Bontrager cranks suck so bad. Trek used the Icon parts and material and put the Bontrager name on them. Just a guess of course. Bottom line, you will break these. They suck. Dont leave them on your bike unless you want to hurt yourself. The previous reveiwer must work for Trek.

Strengths: None as far as riding goes. They might make a good weapon in a post apocalyptic society.Weaknesses: Cranks Bad. Rings Bad. Ride Bad. Turned my STP-200 into a Huffy. Constant Chain Suck. You can have either the big and middle chain ring, or the granny and middle chain ring, but you can't have both with an LX-E front derailleur.Bottom Line: Icon Onyx = Garbage.
Replace these things before they hurt you.

Strengths: They didn't break in half.Weaknesses: Everything but the strength listed.Bottom Line: After a single ride on a friend's XT cranks and a good deal at price point, I decided to get XT. I also found out the icons had little cracks around the bolts - I'm only 165 lbs and don't ride hard enough to do that to a decent set of cranks.
Put these high on your list of things to upgrade if your bike came with them.

Strengths: noneWeaknesses: My rings are spent they finely broke my chain. The new chain won't stay on my small ring so I finally bought new cranks. I spent 80$ on new pedels because I thought they were bent, but its the cranks that are bent.My big ring is missing or bent about 12 teeth.Bottom Line: Its to bad you spend a 1000$ on a bike and get a 2 dollar crank. They suck

Strengths: none at all...Weaknesses: this crank was very weak rom the begining. bad shifting plagued this crank along with a heavy feel and high mantainence. i wallowed out the left arm very quicklyBottom Line: THIS CRANK SUCKS!!!!!!! DO NOT BUY IT UNLESS YOU PLAN ON REPLACING IT SOON AFTER!!!!

Strengths: They look pretty!Weaknesses: Flexy, Junk ChainringsBottom Line: These came stock on my trek and since I got them a year ago they've been slowly bending inwards(the pedals were pointing slightly towards the ground) which was making them terrible to ride. Finally I stripped the thread which gave me an excuse to replace them. Not till I replaced them with Shimano XT's did I realize how much they'd actually been flexing. It's like riding a whole new bike! Come to think about it the only Icon component I haven't bent on my bike is the seatpost and that's probably cuz I ride my seat as low as I can! I only weigh 160lbs and I'm a good technical rider which gives Icon components no excuses.

-CHAINSUCKBottom Line: Well, if you're using this crankset (Icon Onyx) for around town riding, it's fine. As far as XC racing goes.....nope. Get rid of it if it came on your bike, otherwise don't buy it. I'm only 165lbs and I had some major flex in the crank, especially with the shimano BB I had. Race Face is so much stiffer...I couldn't believe the difference. I'll give it 2 flamin thingies. Plus one for value, because it was free and came on the bike

It is awsome.. i got one on my Trek 8900, 99 model.. (I love it) The Icon is awsome!! It shift very smooth and!! Yeah... it's just great!!! IT'S GREAT!!
