Date Reviewed: March 16, 2003
Favorite Trail:Coastal footpath Plymouth (England)
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $270.00
Purchased At:shop no longer trading
Strengths:Chunky Bombproof looks inspire confidence and look like they will last forever
Weaknesses:They snap in half
Bike Setup:Klein Attitude hardtail with Rockshox Judy up front and full XT throughout
Bottom Line:I'm a 12.5 stone brit (not sure what that is in lbs) and i ride to work twice a week and nightride on fridays. I'm not a racer but just like to get out there and get the miles in. Today though my AC cranks snapped clean in half as i was cranking up a bridleway throwing me clean off the bike.

After 5 years of easy going riding is this acceptable or do I have grounds to ask AC (wherever they may hang out at) to replace them? They've had cracks in now (both cranks) for 2 months but I never expected a snap to happen, luckily on grass though and not at night.

Submitted by Cory Bantilan a Downhiller from Santa Barbara, CA
Date Reviewed: November 8, 2002
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $109.00
Purchased At:mail order
Strengths:Strong, look good, price is decent.
Weaknesses:needs very wide bb
Similar Products Used:Just my old LX...my ac's were sitting in my garage for close to 3 years because I hadn't gotten the BB yet.
Bike Setup:97' DBack V-Link 3.0 Alps 4 r in the rear, psylo xc up front, lx 8-speed thoughout.
Bottom Line:Would get rated a 5 but you HAVE to buy a new bb unless yours is already insanel large. The bike shop even guessed too short and we had to file some excess material off of the frame.

Date Reviewed: July 29, 2002
Favorite Trail:cliffface!
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $75.00
Purchased At:Second hand bike shop
Strengths:Built like a tank, altho ive seen the "Mine broke" reviews
Weaknesses:Not the slim fast of the crank world, but u cant have it both ways.
Similar Products Used:XT, L&M
Bike Setup:BaseBike dirt jump frame, modified for triple chainset.
Bottom Line:I bought these second hand when they had already been well used, so at least i havent got the puny ones. Big, tough, sturdy cranks, and they'd have ot be with a 16 stones, (225lb in american) rider on them, no problems as yet.

These are fine for ur typical dirt jump & downhiller, not forxc, too damn weighty and u xc guys have a piss before the race ot keep ur weight down.

Submitted by Dan a Downhiller from Denver, Co
Date Reviewed: August 12, 2001
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Strong, Look Good, Give a Nice Stable Feel
Weaknesses:Needs a VERY Wide Bottom Bracket
Similar Products Used:All Types of Shimano Cranks
Bike Setup:98' GT LTS With LX Components and ZZYZX Fork
Bottom Line:I am your typical average rider. I am not a world class downhiller. I enjoy a fun day of freeride or DH. I weigh 175 lbs. and these cranks have never gave me any problems. They have withstood drops of up to 6 feet; and if you are an average rider, like most people are, than 6 feet should be enough to have fun with. Buy the cranks if you are an average rider, if you are an extreme rider then I can't tell you whether or not to buy them because I have not tested them under your conditions.

Date Reviewed: August 30, 2000
Favorite Trail:Whitting Ranch
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Strengths:They are strong i guess. They havent broken so far, and i weigh 190lbs.
Weaknesses:None
Bike Setup:1996 GT LTS XTR components and a Girvin/Nolleen Fork
Bottom Line:I got a little concerned cause i just took my bike in for a tune up and the guys told me that AC had a recall on cranks cause they were snapping. I decided to do some research on the net. from the looks of the other reveiws, there has been an epidemic of broken cranks. There have been an equal amount of reviews that say they are awsome. Maybe it was just a recent batch that have had problems. If anyone knows how long the problem has been goin on email me. The crank set came on the bike when i bought it used about 2 years ago so i canonly assume the cranks are atleast that old.

Date Reviewed: July 12, 2000
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Bottom Line:07/12/00 Well I just got home and I am licking my wounds while searching the internet to find out about AC Cranks. I just snapped the right side crank while climbing a small uphill section. When the crank snapped I was sent into a tree on the left side of the trail. I guess I am lucky the crank and ring gears are not embedded in my shin. I bent the Shimano cranks that came on my Cannondale and wanted a better product. At least the Shimano cranks gave some warning!
I didn't pay retail for the cranks but I paid more than 100 bucks for them, and was told I would never have to replace them because they would never break. I remembered AC cranks from my BMX days and thought they made a good product. I'm not sure I would trust their product even if they gave me another pair. I paid $175 for them and I wish I had gone ahead and bought the Race Face cranks. Hind sight is 20/20.

Date Reviewed: May 5, 1999
Favorite Trail:
Anything with singletrack
Duration Product Used:
3 months
Strengths:
Astetically pleasing and fairly stiff.
Weaknesses:
Stiff doesn't mean shit if the damn things crack!
Similar Products Used:
White Industries cold-forged and XT
Bike Setup:
I put these cranks on my new 99 Breezer lighting hardtail with a Answer SX-R up front.
Bottom Line:AC sucks, I have owned these cranks for all of three months and I have already managed to crack the non-drive arm completly through the spindle housing. I called the company myself and my LBS sent the cranks in three weeks ago. The guy on the phone promised me a pair of their new improved cranks, but I have yet to recieve them. Consiquently I feel as though I have taken it in the ass, for this inconvienience I have already set aside a new pair of Caramba DB's in trade for the ACs. If I am going to pay this kind of money I don't feel it right to go through all this jacking around so AC can pack the cranks in their ass and give me a refund. I love to ride and as you can see not getting to really pisses me off! Oh by the wayIi only weight 156lbs so I am not a 200lbs ox on a bike, cranks should not break under this weight. The only thing I can say I am happy with is that the crank did not beary itself in my leg when it decided to blow.

Duration Product Used:
more than 3 years
Strengths:
lasts a long time
Weaknesses:
lateral flex
b.b. too wide
Similar Products Used:
shimano lx stx
Bike Setup:
park-pre, manitou mag
Bottom Line:I picked these cranks over 3yr ago at cactus cup for $100, installed by the factory guys, and they even gave me a free t-shirt. To this day I still have no complaints. I just installed them on my new Homegrown last night. We will see if they last another 3yr. Anodization is very durable, mabey too durable since they are purple(gak).
never had a creak a little grease wouldn't fix. The only problem I can see is the width of the spindle required. Best $100 I ever spent on parts. I giv'em all 5 turds

Bottom Line:

Fantastic cranks, they work as well as they look. I have had these cranks for about a year and the only problem I have had is the fact that the colour is coming off where my foot brushes the crank arm, but I am prepared to put up with this due to their great performance. Did I mention they look cool?

Bottom Line:

i have always liked the look of AC,but recently my left crank broke. this
is the 3rd left side i have seen break. when the crank broke the half still
attatched to my BB stuck into my leg about a half inch leaving me with a yummy
scar that im sure will last longer than these overweight/overpriced cranks did!!
i havent had any luck getting them replaced by AC but when i do there yours cheap if you want um..
PS. im 145lbs with change in my pockets and i use a Ti BB and Ti axled frog pedals which both outlasted the AC's......buy raceface, lighter & stiffer.

Bottom Line:

I use the trials specific ac crank on my trials bike, and have broken 3
consecutive left arms. It broke on high drops of 6 feet and up. Upon all breaks, I ended up with large wounds, and quite a bit of whiplash. Would Not recommend this crank to any trialser. It really sucks worrying about doing high drops wondering its gonna crack in half or not.

Submitted by Winston a weekend warrior from northern california
Date Reviewed: April 11, 1998
Bottom Line:

Good cranks, very stiff, and I like their construction method. They are a little heavier then listed about 520 grams, which make them no light weight. They also require a 122mm bb. Which is just to long, especially if you are running a Ti spindle. The paint has held up well. Solid product for about $100 mailorder, which is what I paid. If you pay the retail price of $220 then there are better cranks out there, i.e. 97 and 98 XTR and XT lighter and just as strong just not as chi chi.

I have used these cranks for 4 years and they work great.
Haven't had any trouble, they are strong and don't flex.
I just wish I could get some for the Tamdem bikes that I have.

Submitted by Karl Hamilton a cross-country rider from Arlington TX USA
Date Reviewed: July 4, 1997
Bottom Line:

I love these cranks. They are seriously stiff (forged & machined) and are the trickest looking in my opinion with the machined webbing. I've never had a problem with mine (unlike some other reviews). If you have a problem with cranks rounding out at the bottom bracket, you probably didn't keep the cranks tight (any cranks will round out if not tight), or greased the bottom bracket spindle which allows the taper to round out--keep the spindle grease-free.I am looking to replace mine with Syncros chromoly's only because I want black cranks and mine are silver. 5 chilies to the AC's in my experiences

Bottom Line:

so 2 xmases ago my wife was real nice and gave me a pair of AC cranks. they looked amazing, and were plenty stiff, esp when attached to my cannondale. but, less than one year later, i had to put the old suntour cranks back on.the reason? both cranks (the non-drive side first) rounded to the point of being unusable. it happened gradually, but once it started it was game over. repeated requests to AC for a replacement pair have gone unheeded. customer service seems to be non-existant.although a lot of their stuff looks nice and comes recommended, i will not buy nor recommend any AC products.

I have been riding these cranks for several months with no problems so far! They are very stiff, and look very cool. They are a bit on the meaty side, but for DH racing they are great.
