Favorite Trail:Enchanted Forest
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $4400.00
Purchased At:Singletrack Factory
Strengths:This bike works well all the time.It has the Horst Link rear, and it has been bombproof.
Weaknesses:None
Similar Products Used:Trek 8000 hardtail
Bike Setup:Pushed Fox 32 RLC, Fox DHX Air. Sram X9, Race Face cranks Hayes 9 discs, Mavic 819/XT wheelset.
Bottom Line:This bike totally kicks butt. I have been riding it for four seasons now and I like it now more than ever. Raced it at the leadville silver rush 50 twice and it really performed. It really likes to go downhill, but climbs good for a 28 pounder. If your looking for a trail bike that can do it all, look no further.

Bottom Line:I really enjoy challenging myself while riding the Turner 5 Spot. It really puts my mind at ease when going into some pretty hairy trails. I bought this bike because I could only afford one bike, so I needed one that could do everything and go everywhere. I went for the best. I have taking this bike to Utah, Colorado, WY, Kansas City, and of Nebraska trails. Although a lot of unique terrian, the 5 spot has never let me down. I do not notice any bob or loss of power thoughout hills and the linkage is incrediably responsive over rough stuff.

I've needed to replace the bushings once since I purchased. Other than that the frame is maintence free.

Extremely pleased with this bike. With a 5 spot, you really cant go wrong.

Bottom Line:I prefer bushing to bearing,i prefer riding over servicing bearing. If you want a bike for a while go Turner, Ventana, ellsworth, titus, santacruz,it doing matter they all great bike's.I prefer reliability, and all my TURNER deliver. The 5Spot is a winner because you go up, you go down the level of performance is there.Just look at the rear triangle, you will know why it is a strong bike. Look a specialized stumpjumper fsr rear triangle and ask youre self if you want to change your bike soon. They cost some money, but for me, you get something in return for a while.efficiency and reliability are the most important quality when you are riding fast & furious. to be secure on youre bike is not a option if you want to ride a lot. happy trails..

Price Paid: $1850.00
Purchased At:The Path in Tustin, Ca
Strengths:High quality and attention to detail (just look at the stays and the chainstay yoke;geometry;Turner bushing system with zirk fittings is very durable, has been low - maintenance, and is smooth working; frame looks good; plenty of rear tire clearance, ability to run either air or coil shocks.
Weaknesses:Don't know if it's a weakness but I would prefer just a slighlty more slack seat tube angle
Similar Products Used:Mango FSR (my first real mtb), Jamis Dakaar when they had a horst linkage.
Bike Setup:Cross max enduro wheels, Revelation fork, rp23 shock, raceface low rise bars, 100mm stem, xt der's and shifters, juicy brakes and 170mm rotors.
Bottom Line:This bike is super well-balanced climbing and descending. it keeps good traction on technical/loose and steep climbs yet does not bob when pedaling. the geometry is quick on twisty singletrack, yet not twitchy, and feels very stable going downhill fast.

The frame has been very durable and I am happy to be riding this bike.

Date Reviewed: April 2, 2007
Favorite Trail:Fish Creek Loop, Golden Trout Wilderness
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $1950.00
Purchased At:Helen's Cycles, Santa Monica
Strengths:Excellent lateral stiffness. Bushings are the way to go. (My friend has a Blur and the bearings are a nightmare.) Servicability: Zerks on all pivots. It will take a huge tire. There is no bob to speak of if you are even marginally smooth. The suspension disappears beneath you, no suspension induced pedal feedback, no brake jack...it's awesome. You can put a water bottle holder in the triangle. Lots of loose sandy rocky hills here, if you can sit on the nose of the saddle and turn the crank it will climb anything. The fully active suspension makes it possible.
Weaknesses:I wish I had the 07 Spot!!!
Zerks on chainstay pivots (now on the seat stay) are useless. The toleraces are very tight and there is no grease groove, so you have to take it apart to lube it. If you do take it apart be careful because I have broken the plastic parts in mine. I get occasional 9 to 8 ghost shifts in the big ring on stutter type terrain. This was much worse with normal rear derailleur than rapid rise. I think it has to do with the shift cable positively holding the Rapid Rise derailleur in high gear, vice spring tension only in the case of a normal rear der.
Similar Products Used:Blur (1 ride). This is my first FS bike.
Bike Setup:Medium 2004 5 Spot, RP3, 2005 Talas, XT Cranks and 11/34 Cassette, XT RR Rear Der., XT Front Der., Hayes Mag Plus brakes, Easton Monkey Lite riser bar, Thomson stem and seatpost, WTB Pure saddle, SRAM Triggers, King headset and hubs, , Candy SL pedals, Mavic 819 UST rims, WTB Motoraptor Race 2.4 tires running tubeless, Jagwire Cables, Rollamajig, Salsa Skewers, Stans sealant, Cateye Enduro computer, Garmin Geko 301 GPS.
Bottom Line:I don't think you can go wrong with this bike, and Turner just keeps improving it. It took me a little while to get used to the slacker head angle, coming from a hard tail Stumpjumper M2, but now that I have, it seems to be the perfect compromise between quick handling and downhill stability. At first I kept my Talas dialed down to about 110 mm, but lately I have started running it all the way out except on long climbs (I wish I had the new 3 position switch instead of 3mm per click). I weigh about 185-190 dressed for a ride and set the RP3 at 170 and the Talas at 75 with 30 lbs in the tires. My build came in at 28 to 29 lbs and it climbs great, I don't miss my 24 lb hard tail at all. I love this thing more every time I ride. I plan to upgrade to the longer rocker and eventually maybe the RP23 and Talas with Terralogic.

A word of caution, in the end, bike sizing is a personal thing. Don't let the salesman sell you something when you know better. I am 5'10" with a short torso and longer legs (releatively) and the salesman stuck me on a large because it looked right.....bad move. I rode it for a month and was uncomfortably stretched out, and couldn't get the front wheel off the ground if I tried. I went through the same problem with my first mountain bike and should have learned but didn't. So I went back to Helens and they agreed to replace the large front triangel with a medium and it ended up costing me an extra 300 bucks and I had to buy an extra long seatpost. I'm on a medium now and life is good.

I would give 4 and a half chilis for value if I could because for 2 grand the frame should be flawless. I would mark down for the chainstay pivot lube issue, but they don't deserve to be knocked down to a 4 in my book. If you have the money, this is the ride.

Bottom Line:Outsatanding geometry for all arownd biking. Recently I upgraded it to Talas 2 which improved it because I found out that in 120 mm position it is a perfect XC bikes, in the 140 mm position, the geometry changes to make it very convenient for stip & technical trails and the 100 mm position helps in steep climbing to avoid stalling.

Weaknesses:Doesn't feel nimble at slow speeds but is steady and sure footed.
Similar Products Used:Motolite (demoed), Enduro(owned), VT2(owned)
Bike Setup:Currently running a Fox fork. A 20mm thru axle may make it even sweeter.
Bottom Line:Welp, I think when you buy a bike at this price point you expect and hope that it will feel like a strong quality build. This bike feels solid and stiff but is still fast and a capable climber. It doesn't climb like an XC bike but then again it's not an XC bike. It is everything a solid All Mountain/ all purpose bike should be. Eats up fast and technical terrain and has a very balanced feel. The bottom bracket is high enough to forget about when the trail turns rough. As good or better than any AM bike out there IMO.

It seems to urge you on and make you go beyong your comfort zone. The long wheelbase is huge and makes that bike stable. As you increase your speed the bike seems to get better. I don't think I'm even able to push it to it's limits. Definitely encourage everyone to at least demo a 5 spot and see for yourself.

A word about service. Yesterday the seat tube snapped below the shock mount. Today I called up and told them so. Their response was, literally, "would black be ok? Purchased At:Wrench Science
Strengths:Beautiful build qulaity, bushings instead of the crappy bearings that everyone else uses, simple...proven design, works better than you can imagine.
Weaknesses:When I first got the bike I was a little worried because it felt sluggish uphill...but my time was actually faster. Not sure what to attribute that feeling to.
Similar Products Used:Santa Cruz VP Free, Specialized Enduro, hardtails of various makes
Bike Setup:XTR triggers, front and rear derailleurs, dura ace chain, 959s, fox talas front, rp3 rear, Phil Woods laced to 819s, Hayes Mags, Vertical Pros with stans, xt cranks and casssette, thomson post and oversized stem, salsa qrs, terry saddle, king h/s, lock-ons, .....
Bottom Line:Well...I did a ton of research before getting this bike. I went from wanting a Bullit to a VP Free (which I bought and sold) to a Ventanna...etc etc. I finally settled on the Turner. I liked the fact that it's made in the USA (not just designed here.) I like the fact that they use bushings instead of bearings. It's worth mentioning...read why Turner uses bushings before you discount what I am saying. It makes sense...and after having to replace many bearings due to them being frozen up or very stiff, I believe it. Any pivot point that moves slowly and rotates less than 360* does not need a bearing. Bearings are weaker laterally, are not serviceable, and cost less. Okay..enough about that.

The bike just works. I am always amazed at how the bike tracks over very rough terrain. It just soaks it up with no complaints. While many bikes can do this, not many can turn around and pedal up that nasty hill as well as a 5 Spot. This bike is very versatile, and I've seen them built up big and small. I like a medium build for reliability and all around use.

I was a little upset that Turners no longer have the Horst Link. Not sure if this had anything to do with Tony over at Ellsworth (a bike that I will never own.) Hopefully not. Maybe Specialized just charges too much for the use of the patent on the Horst Link...or is it that Tony filed a patent for ICT (a similar design to Turner's that was developed independently of Ellsworth's design)? Who knows...but it must be hard when the borrower of a patent makes a better bike than the owner of it. Thanks to MTBR the public has made it known that Turner builds the best 4-bar....Thanks Turner.

Weaknesses:I keep asking Spot to sit and roll over but he doesn't listen.
Similar Products Used:Specialized, Titus, Ventana, Trek, Santa Cruz
Bottom Line:You can read all the reviews here, or cruise the Turner forum and read all the comments there. Everyone and their brother has picked and chewed over what makes this bike so much friggin fun to ride. If you look at all of the comments for a long enough time, test ride a bunch of high end bikes, then hop on a Spot the very first word that should pop into your head is “balance”. It’s just so damned well balanced – it does everything it can do at just the right level. Sure, there are plenty of Homer’s out there who tweak and tune and swap rear triangles etc, but they’re well past the initial in-point of ownership and tuning for fun more than need I suspect.

This thing is so well balanced. It reminds me of my old Yamaha RD-350. Not the fastest, not the biggest, but just the right mix of capabilities. Such a well balanced design that you’d swear it could suck the headlamps out of anything on the road. Likewise, my Spot makes me feel like I’m a really hot sh*t rider, instead of the total spazoid I am. Thanks Dave Turner, I owe ya a beer (or two).

Why don’t we Knight people in this country? Sir Dave. . .has a nice ring to it. Or maybe Dave Duke of Dirt, or Baron of Beer. We could put little crown head tube badges on the bikes, and have Royal Crown editions, and versions with sword scabbards, and one with a Grey Poupon holder, and maybe some little white prancing horsey logos. . .

Strengths:Rides like a Turner! Outstanding trail feel. Very supple in choppy terrain, yet climbs extremely well. Excellent manners in difficult situations. Backed by DT and the staff for top notch customer service.
Weaknesses:I'm not sponsored by Turner, so I had to actually buy this frame.

Bottom Line:I got this 5-Spot to ride on fast-paced technical XC rides with younger riders who try (usually successfully) to hammer me to death. Last season I rode some of those rides on my 35 lbs 6-Pack but this year I wanted something lighter and more climb-happy. This fits the bill perfectly, has the same sort of trail feel and complete stability that the 6-Pack has, while being lighter, more nimble, and happier in the climbing modes. Turner bikes have an amazing stable "weight down low" feel that makes them corner and work the terrain like no other bike I've ridden. I would recommend this bike to anyone who likes an active suspension bike (read, NOT a VPP bike) and is seeking a 5" rear travel frame. The guys at Go-Ride are great to deal with, and they've got the '05 frames on sale now. Go git 'em.

Bottom Line:This bike is the best bike I have ridden it does everything well. It climbs well and decends even better. I love this bike, I built it up light so I could do all day rides on it and it has not let me down. I knew from the get go that this thing would flat fly down the down hills so my main concern was going up hill because where I ride there is alot of climbing to get to those down hills. That is why I built it up with all of the XTR parts the bike weighs 28lbs with all of the parts listed above.

As for the the whole TNT vs HL debate I can not tell a difference and I have owned Turners in the past with the HL so I'm aware of how they ride. I would reccomend this bike to anyone you can do so many different builds with this frame the options are endless. You can build it up as a light free ride sled or a light weight XC trail bike like I did. The frame is so versatile you can do whatever you want.

I primarily use it for aggressive trail riding and it fits the bill with no objection from rider or ride. Some have gone so far as to use the bike for a light freeride machine and have had no problems with this useage. If you look in the forums sectin and go to the Turner forum you can search for 5-Spot pictures and movies and you will see that the bike is quite capable of the "X" foot drop every now and then. Extensive freeriding should be left to the RFX/6Pack.

Strengths:Solid, stiff, nonflexing frame. Serviceable pivots. No pivot slop. Excellent standover height. Bottom bracket height is good. Good traction for steep climbing. Does not slip. Can just power over tight technical terrain features. Predictable steering with moderate downhill speeds. Gets better as the pace picks up. Top rate ride.
Weaknesses:Bland paint job. Extra fee for only a couple paint choices beyond just black or gray. Mine is gray. Anodizing would be nice. Slow steering for climbing. Have to concentrate a bit harder to keep it going straight on steep tight uphill singletrack.
Bike Setup:Large 2005 5-Spot. Added DHX-Air this summer. Marzocchi AM SL. XTR Dual Control.
Bottom Line:This is a one year followup to my last review on this same bike. I haven't put on the miles that I would like this last year. At this rate the frame will definitely last forever, but I think it probably would anyway. The components definitely are showing some aging. The rear derailleur is getting a little bit loose and the cranks have lost their sheen. I have swapped out the small and middle chainrings as well as the cassette in addition to the two or three times a year chain swaps. I am still happy with the Dual Control shifters by the way.

There doesn't seem to be much to wear out on this Turner frame though. It gets a little heavy cable wear on the paint near the headset and near the seat tube. I have been slovenly about protecting those areas.

I love the serviceable pivots, except for one thing. On super ultra epic all day rides I have still had the pivots start to squeak on me even after being sure to lube those zirks prior to the ride. Otherwise, as long as I regularly squeeze some Prep M in there the frame stays silent.

I replaced the RP3 with a DHX-Air, not from any major complaint, but more out of curiosity. Considering I have more roots in XC, I probably didn't need to add that extra weight. Doesn't make me faster or better. The DHX definitely has softer mid travel. Leaks a bit of oil. I should get that serviced. It hasn't stuck down on me yet as I read it has a habit of doing.

The AM SL is still rocking. I check the air levels every few months and it hardly ever needs topping off.

I am really waiting on somebody to come up with an All Mountain serviceable internal drive type bike. The rear derailleur is the Achilles heal of any bike. I am not ready to go single speed and do not like the Rohloff hub so I hope Turner can come up with something. I'll be standing in line.

I am still very happy with this bike. Now with the new changes away from the Horst Link pivot to the TNT, I am not in a hurry to swap out this bike for a new one. I have one that fits me fine. I think I will just keep hanging new components on this thing every year or two.

Bike Setup:All Sram XO, Raceface Atlas, Hayes El Camino, King wherever I can, and the coolest bars ever Easton CNT carbon DH. Fox 36 RC2 front fork.
Bottom Line:This is a no strings attached, nothing to gain, assessment of what a 5 spot is. I have owned 3 5 spots and have come to the concusion that I will never, not own a 5 spot. I may ride other bikes, but I will always own a 5 spot. At one point, I had two 5 spots, a light one and a big hit one, one was set up with light parts and came in at 28 pounds, and the other one was big hit, set up in the 35+ range. This shows the versatility of the bike, you can set it up either way, epic X-country or freeride style.

The frame hasn't really changed much in years, except for the new rear linkage Turner now calls TNT linkage. My 5-spot is the 05 model with a Horst Link. I have ridden the new linkage and cannot tell the difference in the way they work, so don't let the new linkage deter you from buying the bike.

The skinny: The bike has a low center of gravity that allows you to rail side to side and really push the limits in DH mode. It also pedals extremely well for a 5 inch travel bike. Turner is by far the best bike design out there. I know this after owning many other custom frames and spending thousands of dollars on bikes. I never was content with my bikes, but I finally have found the magic with Turner's 5 spot, and the younger Turner sibling, the Flux. read my review on that bike as well.

You name the frame, and I have ridden it or owned it- with the exception of the Taiwan bikes- i.e. Trek-Specialized, etc. TURNER 5 spot is by far the most fun bike I have ridden. Remember, FUN is the key word. It pedals well, Descends well and handles better than any bike I have ridden. I will ride the 5 Spot anywhere and on any trail without a second thought.

Turner also has that Bling factor we all crave. BLING!!

Bottom Line:Best bike I've ever ridden. It can climb the steepest stuff with the relatively over steepened seat tube and the slightly longer than average chainstays. You slide forward on the saddle, and keep the weight directed over the rear tire and it will go up anything. It is so stable at speed it is scary. You never seem to find the top end where you want to back off. It never "noodles" out or gets erratic, even at my 190# wt. The faster, the smoother the bike. The bigger the hits, the smoother; the coil fork helps. The 69 deg. head tube is perfect for descents. Never gets scary. The frame with the RP3 is very light and even though the bike is very beefy, it is easy to ride all down long. You never feel bogged in any way.

Weaknesses:Not a cheap bike by a long way, but you get what you pay for! This bike will still be riding for years to come, it's a lifetime buy. I'd rather spend the extra cash once and have a top-notch bike for the rest of my life than change bikes ever two years.

Bottom Line:Best bike I've ever ridden...can see why it was voted best trail bike ever by all the magazines. The Turner lets me do everything - long enduro rides, technical descents, tight single-track, big drops, this bikes handles it all beautifully. For all-round trail use, this bike really is the best.

It also makes up for my mistakes time after time. One of the local downhill hotshots took my bike for a circuit here and beat his own time record on the first ride. His own bike has 8 inches of travel but he swears the Turner is the smoothest bike he's ridden. I've tried out just about everything on the market and I had to agree...which is why I bought the Turner.

The bottom line? Best trail bike ever! All the magazines said it and now I can see why.

Strengths:Very versatile bike that can do just about anything.
Weaknesses:Flex in the rear-end when landing drops (but I weigh 225lbs., so take this 'weakness' with a grain of salt).
Similar Products Used:Santa Cruz Heckler, Tazmon.
Bike Setup:Romic rear shock, Sherman Firefly, Mavic 819's, XT and SRAM mix.
Bottom Line:Turner makes the 5-Spot in a "Sasquatch" size - ie, XXL. You (or your LBS) has to contact the Co. directly as no one stocks this size, and they only make 10 a year, but its a production frame big enough for people 6'5" and up and sports a 26" top tube. I purchased mine one year ago and it has been my primary ride every since.
The most important part of this frame, for me, is its availability in XXL. I'm 6'5" and tired of long stems, lay back seatposts, and frames that are just aren't big enough. My Sasquatch sized Turner fits like a glove (although I'd like another 1" standover) and gives me more flexibilty setting the bike up.
As for the ride - this bike rocks. I have had it set up for XC (longer stem, short rise bars, XC tires) and 'freeride/downhill' (shorty stem, 2" rise bars, FR tires) and it handles both exceptionally well. It is an incredibily versatile bike that's easy to set up and is suprisingly nimble, even on twisty, switchbacking singletrack (although tight switchbacks take a bit of finesse.)
The rear suspension has been trouble free despite abusive weather, mud and my weight (225lbs.). No bushing/bearing play, built in zerks fittings, rear shock adjustable from plush to XC racer stiff with little to no 'bob.'
The rear end does flex a bit when landing drops, and two of the zerks fittings have popped out; one I was able to find and push back into place, another dropped on a trail somewhere and is forever lost. In addition, injecting grease through the fitting is very difficult and can cause the fitting to pop out. I also would have liked a slightly greater slope to the top tube, adding a bit more crotch clearance (I guess I carry more of my height in my torso rather than my legs), but if that's the trade-off to have a bike long enough for my size, so be it.
I would strongly recommend this frame to anyone looking for an all-mountain, do everything trail bike.

Strengths:Climbs perfectly, descends even better. RP3 shock is amazing. No bob at all on climbs, the super-plush on the downhills.
Weaknesses:Out of the saddle climbing. You pretty much can't do it on this bike cause it moves so much. I guess that's to be expected when it's got 5 inches of travel. The only time it bothered me was during the Wilderness 101.
Bike Setup:I came from a Sugar 2+ Disc. I basically swapped every single component onto this frame and the bike still came in right at 29 lbs! With some upgrades, 27 pounds seems easily obtainable.
Bottom Line:I just completed the Wilderness 101 and the 6 Hours of Power on this bike and it performed perfectly. For the Wilderness, I would have liked lockouts on either end, but climbing 50 miles worth of fireroads isn't really what this bike is designed for. Still, it performed great.

I was looking for an all-day XC bike that could handle any terrain and the 5-spot has hit the mark. I recently took my hardtail single-speed out for a ride on some rocky trails and I was completely bummed that I didn't have the Spot...it just makes every ride so much more fun. About the only time I would want a different bike is on totally smooth single-track or fireroads. Again, the bike really isn't made for that so it makes sense that this stuff ain't its thing.

Downhills deserve special mention: I'll echo what many others have said here... The limit on downhills is you! It's not the bike. The bike can handle anything...just point and shoot. So confidence inspiring that it's scary. It's so easy to absolutely BOMB down a steep, rocky descent...it's almost cheating.

One other thing...if you come off a 3-4 inch travel bike, you'll probably notice that the headtube angle is a little slacker on the 5-spot. As another guy said below...this isn't a problem, it's just different. I ride pretty tight, technical trails and this bike never feels slow in that stuff...it feels just right.

Strengths:Plush. Stable. Nimble for a bike with so much travel and such a relaxed headtube angle. Point and shoot.
Weaknesses:Haven't found any yet.
Similar Products Used:Came from an NRS. I have ridden the blur, which is nice but not this nice. Would my tomac 204 be considered "similar".
Bike Setup:Built for cross country riding, not hucking, not racing, just riding. I'd guess the weight as around 30lbs.
Bottom Line:It's weird, coming to the 5spot from the NRS -- which was a bike I really liked. The nrs was a bob-free, fast xc bike. I've seen plenty in xc races and rode the crap out of mine for over two years. But I wanted something that was a bit more "all mountain"; with more travel; capable of more high-speed descending, such as might be found in places such as Northstar and Downieville. Bingo, we have a winner.

Make no mistake, the nrs does a great job for what it is but it's no 5spot. The nrs required more attention when descending. I suppose that, for the most part, it has to do with the amount of suspension. My nrs was set-up with 3" on either end. The nrs required, and rewarded, careful, precise line selection. The amount of travel was just enough to take the edge off of long rides.

On the 5spot I get this weird sensation that I'm a spectator on my own ride. It's that smooth at speed. I'm a little fearful that it'll get me into some trouble, given how I'm finding I don't have to be as selective in my lines. On the few rides I've taken thus far, I've found myself carrying a lot more speed, often on a less than optimal line and have just not worried about it. The 5spot just sucks up the terrain and delivers me from evil...it's kinda scary. And it feels quite nimble for having so much travel. I can hop this bike and move it about to change my line as easily as on any other bike I've ridden.

I picked this frame up used. The previous owner had kept it in meticulous condition so it pretty much looks and rides like a new bike. I can't really think of a gripe. I'm having to get used to the bike, but that's just because it's a new ride. The differences in feel that I'm getting used to are the higher bottom bracket, ever-so slightly shorter cockpit, and slightly slacker headtube angle. Neither of these factors are problematic, they're just different.

Who should buy this frame? Someone, like me, desiring more travel for xc riding. I suppose there are folks who might venture hucking such a ride but I'm not certain that that is what it's made for. I think it'd suit someone who enjoys "epics" -- longer rides (it's really comfy), rides with variety in the terrain (very confidence-inspiring ride), rides that challenge their skills (very stable, forgiving, and predictable).

I don't really expect to get warranty coverage on this frame, but from what I've read about Turner's customer service, I won't be surprised if they treat me well.

As for build quality, I'm not sure what some of the other folks who've posted reviews were griping about. It's a very cool looking design, it's got nice hydro line guides on the toptube, and a cool looking bottom bracket shell area. I think it's a great looking bike.

This bike will get you there and back with a smile on your face. I'm really looking forward to a great many rides on this bike.

I'm writing this to inform you of the Turner customer service.

After 11 months of three to four days a week riding, my 5 SPOT had a seat tube failure. Nothing new, I've broken every bike I've ever owned.

My frame is an '03, I weigh 210lbs and I ride every trail around. I am hard on all components!

After the break, the next morning I called Turner and the phone was answered immediately. Quite simply they asked where did it break? After explaining, they told me that I could either take it back to Supergo and they would handle the warranty or since I live close by, I could bring it down for the exchange. I chose to drive it down. They swapped my current rear triangle onto a brand new '05 front triangle. It took all of 20 minutes and that's because I kept the builder busy with questions.

Bottom line is this. They took care of me, promtly, courteously and proffesionally. My down time was around two days.

With only around eight employees working at Turner, I was suprised at how immediate the results were. In the past I have called Turner three other times and everytime the phone was answered by a human! Ever try calling Intense and getting a response, even after several months?

Kudos to Turner, a model for other business'!

I had this bike for a year and I am quite happy with it even if it did not live up to the expectations. It is a great (4 chilis) and honest bike that does many things well. Best quality is traction which in my case conbined with a Vanilla/Stratos-id inertia valved fork makes for an outstanding climber despite its 5" travel. Braking performance is ok, the bike does brake-jacks (almost as much as my old gt sts) and one has to slide back to compensate in most descent situations. In most cases this is not an issue since an experienced rider slides back almost as second nature, but in some situations (e.g. sudden brake grabs over rough channeled terrain with no time to move yout butt) the brake-jack can give trouble: something to watch and be aware off. The bike has a very standard, tried and true geometry that translates into a neutral and confidence inspiring ride. Plus minus 0.5 degrees is the same geometry used by most 4-5" travel bike on the market. Like the vast majority of production new generation 4-5" suspension bikes it will feel like an improvement if you come from an hardtail and a shorter travel pre-2001/2002 bike.
Climbing is good, but climbing with standing is rather ineffective unless you are very careful and/or put a lot of platform in the romic, and then loose small bumo compliance.

Quality of construction is very average and does not justify in any way the custom price asked for what is just a production bike.

Strengths:Solid build, predictable handling, reasonably light
Weaknesses:Wish it were anodized. Not sure I agree with MTBR that a 5 spot should be categorized as a "freeride" bike. I wouldn't be hucking with this thing, but then again I am not capable anyway. Wish I could get my rear hydraulic housing to run straight along the top of the top tube instead of bending whichever way it wants. Not a performance issue, just appearance.
Similar Products Used:Truth, Blur, Chuck,
Bike Setup:Large frame with Marzocchi AM SL 110-130 ( air settings: positive 25, negative 100, PAR 18, then rebound adjust about halfway) and RP3 at about 165lbs, xtr drivetrain and brakes, Hugi/DT 4.1 wheelset, Thomson
Bottom Line:This is my second go around. Last winter I built and rode a medium 5 spot with a TALAS 125 and Romic. Felt nice but the cockpit was too short. It also showed a mile of seatpost.

I'm 5' 10" 185lbs. I am more used to a stretched xc-ish feel. My point of reference is a medium '01 Ellsworth Truth which fits me very well. It's top tube length was 23.5 inches if memory serves. The medium 5 spot tt length was a bit less. So after a great spring and summer riding a slightly smaller bike, I sold the frame and fork and got a large.

The large is a much better fit for me, I think the TT is 23.9. I had hoped that I would be able to build it to less than it's current 28ish lbs. I think the AM SL weight is a little more than the Fox TALAS, which offsets the weight savings with the new RP3 airshock over the old Romic coil.

The workmanship is good. I wouldn't know a weld from a weiner, but it looks clean. The headtube, seatpost hollow, and bottom bracket were ready to build, no paint or welding debris to clean out. There are only hydraulic zip tie tabs on the seat stay, no rim brake posts. The standover height is ideal with the dropped top tube, looks like more bike makers are doing the same.

I definitely buy into the Turner bushing pivot concept. Very serviceable and I expect long lived. I was underwhelmed by my Truth sealed bearings.

The bike rides nice. For climbing, the front end lifts a bit with steep efforts, but it is not a horrible wanderer. I can still get up narrow singletrack without thinking too hard about it. I have a 0 x 110 stem with a lo riser. The AM SL does allow you to lock out the travel, but it locks at the top of travel instead of dropping down a bit, which would lend a little more power to the thighs on these long High Sierra climbs. The rearend grabs nicely, I don't find myself having to re-shift my weight to avoid rear tire slippage on the climbs. These four bar bikes are not stand and hammer bikes, you just get too much rear end sproing. It is easier to just a sit and spin, and let rear linkage just absorb the bumps.

Descending is very confidence inspiring. It is a relatively long chassis. Getting the bike to rail from edge to edge is not instantaneous, but it is smooth and predictable. I haven't experienced any front tire wash. This lets me lean into the corners without too much fear that the bike will push down in the corner and unhorse me. The slow technical stuff is not a problem either. The frame does not buckle or torque if the tires are wedged down in rocks or ruts. I think the Marzocchi AM SL may have a little more lateral rigidity than the TALAS, although I would be happy with either on this frame. As far as air time, I'm sure the 5 Spot could handle 5 foot heights, but I wouldn't be the pilot. I get nervous with stuff under a couple feet.

Portaging is even ok. The rear cables and housing are routed on the top of the top tube so they don't dig into the shoulder. In addition, with the rear shock mounted to the seat tube, you don't have to shoulder up against a top tube mounted rear shock such as you would with the Santa Cruz Blur. Small, probably unimportant detail.

No warranty issues yet and hopefully it will stay that way. The 5iver is a bit heavy for racing and I'd like to see it anodized and offered in more colors than gray or black, but then again I don't really care.

Overall, this 5 Spot is the best bike I have ridden. It is a more capable bike than I am a rider. I have no second thoughts. If I had to get another bike, it would be a 5 Spot...or a Flux. I don't need to get any more travel, 5 inches is plenty.

Strengths:Climbing, Decending, and everything in between. I like the switch to the RP3. I demoed an 03 Spot last summer with the Romic and it feels like a different bike. The RP3 feels alive and gives you a way better platform to crank on the hilss and flats. The Romic was just as good at decending.
Weaknesses:Be patient for it will eventually arrive.

Bottom Line:I am coming off of a Specialized FSRxc. My build is biased towards longer rides and it came in perfect. The weight, once the caminos come in, should be around 26lbs without too many fragile parts. The maverick SC is a great fork for anyone looking for a fast singletrack trailbike that isn't going to huck themselves off huge rocks. The Maverick DC is the way to go for that. No matter how tight the trail, this thing manuevers. Once I adjusted to the higher BB, you can make it around crazy switchbacks and other obstacles without feeling like you have too much bike under you. The bike climbs well with the shocks in full mode, but the lockdown on the SC steepens the head angle enough that it turns into a stiff climber. I would suggest this bike to anyone. Chris and the rest of the crew at Wrenchscience are totally helpful and made the 6 month wait for the 05 frame a little easier.

Bottom Line:Turner makes the best trail bike on the market it is fairly light weight, it climbs very well and it decends even better than it climbs. I have this bike set up with parts that are geared towards the lighter side due to the fact I do alot of climbing. The bottom line on this bike is if you want a bike that does it all and does it all very well buy the 5 spot. Some trail bikes climb a little bit better than the 5 spot but not by much, and none can hold a candle to it on the decents. Take it from me I have ridden and owned just about every major trail bike and the Turner 5 spot is a well balanced machine for every aspect of riding.

This bike really excels in every area as long as your main concern isn't what your heart rate or anaerobic threshold is. 5" front and rear is huge. I'm a light, smooth rider and this bike has been able to handle every dh situation I've thrown at it with aplomb.

Climbing wise, the bike isn't a super light, but the longerish wheelbase and the rear suspension make it climb steadily and surely. It climbs like a choo choo train - just keeps on chuggin along, unfaltering.

The 5 Spot is a fantastic all around mountain machine. Can't recommend it enough!

Bike Setup:Large frame, Romic coil over; Vanilla R; XM 819; Hutch Spiders (sweet); X9 triggers and R der; XT front; RF Deus crankset; Thompson post/stem; Answer carbon bar. Comes in at less than 29 lbs.
Bottom Line:I have known all along what a great bike this is. But have only very recently realized exactly how great. With more of my friends getting top of the line bikes, I have had the chance to ride not only similarly priced bikes in the same class as the 5 Spot, but also much lighter, race bikes. None of these come close in terms of that all around perfect ride. Yeah the race bikes are lighter and feel more responsive. But, I was honestly expecting more of a difference in terms of pedaling platform and efficiency from these other bikes. When I tested these other bikes, I made sure my comparisons were accurate; I only rode on trails I have ridden on for years and know precisely how long it takes me to ride on my 5 Spot. The results were pretty amazing.

On long flat hardpack climbs, the lighter bikes were quicker, but not significantly, certainly less than I had anticipated, and nowhere near enough to compensate for their deficiencies in other aspects as compared to the 5 Spot.

In addition, even given the lighter weight of these other bikes, none climb as well as the 5 Spot over the rough stuff because of the superior way that the rear suspension keeps the tire glued to the ground.

On anything technical, and on all downhill sections, the 5 Spot blew away these other bikes. Going through rock gardens, and going down (over anything) there is just no contest. You don't have to pick a line like you do with a 3" or even most 4" travel bikes, and the hits you take just will not slow you down noticeably, as they do on other bikes. The geometry, in particular the head angle and wheelbase length of the 5 Spot, provide a whole different level of stability, and, in turn, rider confidence, giving that "bring it on" attitude that other reviewers have talked about.

There are actually numerous reasons for the way the bike performs, and, somehow, (thank you Dave Turner) all have come together perfectly in this incredible trail bike.

If you are thinking about this bike, just do it. It is perfection.

Last, I see a lot of people on the discussion boards asking about 123 Bikes, and I wanted to recommend them, and especially David. He built me a great bike at a great price. No sales tax, no shipping charges. After I spec'd it out, he built and delivered the bike to my door in about a week!! What more can you ask for. They even gave me a free upgrade on my rims.

Strengths:If you are looking for a all around bike the 5 Spot is the one you should purchase. The bike is stable in descending and when climbing the bike contourse to the trail like no other bike. This is due to it's four bar linkage. The 5 Spot has good tire clearance for running 2.4 tires.

I was riding a Santa Cruz Blur, when climb and descending in rocks and roots I would hit my cranks, due to the over rated VPP system. Bottom Line:At first I was skeptical about a full bushing rear end vs. bearings, but after speaking with the guys at Turner and having ridden the bike, now I'm a believer. With the grease ports at all pivot points, maintenance on this bike is going to be a breeze, gotta love that.

The ride is nothing short of phenominal, the rear wheel tracks like it is part of the terrain it's rolling over. After a little toying with the suspension settings on the shock the bike feels like it has more travel than five inches. I forsee many good hours on this bike, I don't doubt that it will help improve my riding skills in the confidence it inspires due to the rigid chassis and plush suspension.

Granted these bikes are not cheap, I couldn't afford a cup of coffee at this point, but if you really ride, it's worth starving for a couple of weeks! If you're looking for a solid five inch trail bike, look no further, just buy it.

Bike Setup:Vanilla fork, Romic rear shock, Crossmax XL, SRAM/Shimano/Raceface drivetrain
Bottom Line:This bike is the perfect "one bike." It may not be a superlight climber, but the suspension seems to aid climbing rather than hinder it. Its downhill capabilities are far beyond mine, so no problem there. After a year and a half I'm still no where near the limits of this bike. I wanted a bike that could take a heavier rider (being probably 220lbs riding weight), and this bike feels way sturdy.

Strengths:Everything. Well balanced, well built, the perfect trail bike. Slack head angle for the steeps and a steep seat tube angle for the climbs -- brilliant. I built this bike with a 2005 Minute 1 which includes the newer and plusher internals. Combined with the stable platform design of the Romic, I can stand and hammer without bobbing. I have never been that concerned about bob and his seemingly nasty traits, but when you start most of your rides from your front door, just getting to the trail can be a process. The stable platform idea is great for road sections and fire roads. Plus you can fly into turns like a bat out of hell without the front end diving. The plush coil spring of the Minute 1 mates well with the coil over Romic.
Weaknesses:None. I was lucky enough to pick up a 2005 anodized matt black frame so other riders' powder coat issues, have not and will not materialize. I believe that the anodized frames are / were in limited production so sorry if you can't find one. Call Dave at 123 Bikes -he might be able to hook you up.
Similar Products Used:Titus Racer X, Yeti 575, Intense 5.5, Titus Switchblade
Bike Setup:Minute 1 fork (coil sprung to match the romic; side note, the matt black Minute looks killer with the matt black ano 5 spot frame -- very goth). Upgraded shock's coil spring from steel to ti -- knocked off 1/4 pound from the Romic! XTR front D., xo rear D., x9 triggers, Thomson post, King hubs and headset, XTR cranks. 14 straight gauge spokes in the back with brass nipples on Rhyno Lite rims (14/15 butted spokes up front). Went light where I could, but still kept it strong. Not sure what the weight is, but I would guess my x large weighs in at about 28 pounds. Could lose some girth on the wheels, but strength is more important when far from home. Stan's no tubes would be a good way to lose spinning weight, or get stronger legs. So far I have opted for the latter option.
Bottom Line:Had been riding a Titus Racer X (great bike also)for the last three years and figured five inches of travel would better suit the stairs and technical drops of the Tahoe basin and the likes of Downieville. I was right. If you are a speed demon on the down hill, like the occasional table top or 4ft. drop, but still have the masocistic need to climb, this is your rig. You will be blowing by the shuttle whimps on the downhill even after climbing several thousand feet. I like this bike not because I dropped huge coin (which I did) and need to want it, I like it because it is the perfect mountain bike -- which in these times of splinter categories and specialty bikes is saying quite a lot. Sure there are lighter bikes and there are bikes with more travel, but if you are looking for a true mountain bike, this is it. I did feel that the there was some heft under me on my first few climbs; however, it didn't impede forward progress!!?? If my legs could push the pedals, the bike would go. Can't quite put it into words, but the thing just goes. Climbs anything. Enough said. I am on the taller side and most of the other bikes I considered were too small or tight in the cockpit. If you are leggy (or not), look at the specs and then buy this bike. You may be on a top ramen diet for a while to pay this thing off, but you won't regret it.

Strengths:Uphill over anything..rocks, roots, ruts, without hesitating, just keep pedalling. Downhill, just let go of the brakes and fly. Noone keeps up. Waiting for buddies at the bottom. This bike magnifies your innate riding ability and exaggerates your fitness level.
Weaknesses:Having to pass so many other bikers on both the up and downhill is a pain. Paranoia: Having to quadruple lock it in the car, in the garage. NEVER leaving it out, locked or not. This bike is a target. You can feel the eyes on it everywhere.
Similar Products Used:None truly similar. Owned a Cannondale Jekyll 3000 and F700. Will never use Cannondale again...just inferior and poor service. Have tried the Blur, nice, but much less freeride ability, and no better on the XC.
Bike Setup:Vanilla RLC125 fork, XT components, tubeless, Chris King hubs, about 29 lbs, great candy all around for the other parts. Had a blast building this thing. I chose the XT set over the XTR because: I don't like the brake/shift combo levers, I didn't feel an obsessive need to shave the ounces, and I wanted to be able to afford replacements if I wrecked. XTR is wicked expensive stuff. I wanted to ride hard without worrying about consequences, and I'm not wealthy.
Bottom Line:Riding this bike is obscenely sweet. I'm dropping off 3-5 foot stuff that I would never try before (I'm old and getting brittle). Took me a while to build up the nerve, but once I tried a 2, a 3, I just kept hitting drops like they were speed bumps. Feel like a kid again. Flying down tricky single track and rutted-out fire roads is now just a test of my nerves...can I really do a four mile down-section without hardly feathering the brakes? Plush, no chatter, tracks true and easy, holds the line in corners, leaps off the ground and lands true every time. Feel balanced in the air. The real payoff though is out of the adrenaline zone. I feel comfortable settling into the "cockpit" and pedalling, not too tight, not too stretched out. Unreal climbing makes me feel much more fit than I know I am. Long rides are not nearly as taxing. I absolutely do not feel the weight (29-30 lbs), in fact, rides lighter than I can believe. Buy one, trade for one, just don't steal mine!

Strengths:The 5 Spot does everything well; its only limit is the talent of the rider. This is my third Turner ('95 Burner, '99 XCE and now the 5 Spot) and I looked at a 5.5, a VP Free and a Foes Inferno, but I never seriously considered any of them. The Turner climbs well, descends well, rails cross country and imparts a level of rider confidence that, in my case, isn't always justified. I rode at Big Bear yesterday and I think I'd be sporting at least two casts today if I'd been riding something else (that's the lack-of-talent part, right there). The Turner's ability to hold a line is uncanny. If you're an aggressive trail rider you can't go wrong on a Turner. If you're anything less than totally committed to your saddle time, well, look elsewhere.
Weaknesses:I'd prefer laser etched graphics to the stickers adorning the downtube. That's about it.

This bike just laughs at technical stuff I used to think I was going to die on. The Romic Shock is very plush decending and provides great traction for the rear wheel on very technical rocky loose climbs. I've cleared stuff on this bike that I never have before. 123bikes did a great job setting it up for me as well. Highly Recommended!!
5 Flamin Chilis and more if I could give it.

Bottom Line:This is one fun bike! I can't believe how well this bike climbs over rough sections. Even when i am about to give up the bike does not. The spot pedals better than any bike i have ever ridden, it just rocks. I was used to riding more cross-country oriented bikes, so it took me a couple of rides to get used to the slacker head angle, but now i love it becasue i know how it steers and i can go about twice as fast downhill. If you want one bike that can do it all, and do it all well seriously consider the five spot.

I tried to make my bike as light as possible and was surprised at how well she goes up hill. On the 5 spot I tend to spin more and stay seated. This allows me to keep a lot of energy in reserve which makes the ride back down that much more fun. On rocky single track or technical trails the 5 spot excels. It is the quintessence trail bike.

I actually climbs pretty well, not as well as my XC racing bikes due the extra weight and bigger tires, but will get to the top of almost anything due to the extra traction.
The slacker head angle and suspension make it slower on some trails, I found it to be out of its element on some smooth, twisting trails, but I dont ride those anyway.
So far the Romic has worked well, I am expecting some day that it will spew its oily guts everywhere like all its family, but so far it has not given me any problems (knocks on own head).

After having the bike a while, I was surprised to get a package from www.richardscycles.com. I opened it to find two brand new WTB epic wolf tires and and extra set of handle bars. The day before they shipped me the bike, I got a call saying they didn't have the tires and bars I had spec'd, and asked whether it would be OK if they substitute MORE expensive $50 Continental Explores and a MORE expensive Easton bar. I said no problem.

Then without any obligation or even request by me, they sent me the stuff I originally spec'd and let me keep the other stuff too. How many bike shops would do that? These guys are great!

I can stay seated and grind over terrain that I would have been jolted by on other bikes, including the Curnutt FXR or other "stable platform" Bikes. I have reduced my uphill time over what I was doing on my 24 lb cross counrty bike just because of this. I saw the guy from europe said his didn't climb as well as the Blur. Not my experience. The Blur needs chain tension to negate pedal feedback and bob. That can be an issue on long non-sprint climbs. The Turner is too heavy to be a cross counrty racer, but if you want a perfect trail bike or all mountain bike- this is it!

If you are going to buy one I would highly recommend www.richardsbicycles.com. They gave me an UNBELIEVABLE price and the service is awsome. They really are stand up people who will be fair with you. My brother bough a bike there too and also had a great experience.

Duration Product Used:3 months

Strengths:Construction: the bike weights 3228 grams (with titanium kit shaving off 30 grams) with a 700 grams Romic, that is 2528 or 5.56 pounds with no shock. For comparison with other frames add to that weight the savings from the bushings (hard to estimate, probably around 100 grams) and from the very short headtube (4", add probably around 50 grams) and you have a 6 pounds frame: a good indicator for a solid off road construction.

Shock: The Romic is the heart of this bike, at my weight (145-150 pounds) it allows to pedal with no bob while standing and it can be tuned very effectively. However, the bike set up is very sensitive to spring rate: there is a profound difference in performance when going from a 400 to 450 (with the 450 giving a much harsher ride). Given the fact that spring rates for the Romic are much smaller than for other coil shocks it would be nice to have available springs in 25 pounds increments.

Geometry; the bike feels very leveled and nicely balanced between rear and front. It is very composed both in tight singletrack and at faster speeds for example on fire roads.

Climbing: I found this the best quality. Fireroad climbing is exceptional, as I mention I can stand with no bob, Technical climbing might be even better: over high steps or roots it is the best I have ever experienced, the rear suspension seems to go over everything.

Braking: as expected the bike is fully active under braking.

Bushing: the advantage is weight and the fact that they can be maintained with simple tools.
Weaknesses:Suspension. Like every single Horst-link I ever tried the suspension has two sub-optimal peculiarities: (1) it rises under braking (anti-squat) and (2) it extends over obstacles (especially when coasting over smooth bumps) before compressing.
(1) mostly effects descending. It is relatively minor but it is very easy to perceive on smooth fireroads: after the brakes are applied the rear rises up unless some weight is transferred to the rear, the asset of the bike suffers if one does not do so.
(2) mostly effect coasting. The effect is much worse on the air-shock and/or shorter travel horsts I owned or tested. The effect, for example, is very noticable on a Switchblade (air shock). A careful set up of the rebound of the Romic minimizes the effect that, with the bike properly set up, does not unsettle the bike too much.

Bushings disadvantage ... well maintainance ...

Cost: it might be sound like a joke but I suspect Turner could sell the 5-spot at $1500, but probably less people would buy it.
Similar Products Used:Amp B3 (owned), GT STS (owned), Ellsworth Truth (circa 2000), Titus switchblade (2002), Specialized FSR in different incarnations (1999, 2001, 2002). Santa Cruz Blur co owned 1 month).
Bike Setup:Medium 5-spot with Marzocchi Z1 MCR 2001, currently around 26 pounds. See http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=10060 for details. It has been running for 2months+ and has 1263 miles on it.
Bottom Line:This is a traditional Horst-link bike that benefits enormously from a coil shock and in particular the Romic. The combination of active suspension and stable platform makes its climbing outstanding. If you like to climb over technical terrain buy this bike, if you climb fireroads buy this bike. It pedals with no perceivable bob even when standing. Coasting in great, descending is great, handling is great. Braking is good.

Is it the Horst Link? – Could be. Is it the 5 inches super plush travel? – Possibly. Or is it that Turner Knows how to build a perfect trail bike? I think so.
Weaknesses:I have seen many people concerned about the quality of the paint job, My personal thought is that 3 of the 4 colors (Red, Blue, and Black) available are going to show more of yesterdays epic ride. So if you don’t want to show those beautiful stick marks dont ride in the dirt.

If you are coming from another custom frame like ellsworth, titus, etc. the 5-spot will make you believe there is indeed one designer left out there that understands full suspension - dave turner has my vote for the only enlightened despot of MTBR left. regarding Hammerhead in Austin - these guys are a throwback to the bike shops that really take the time to work with every customer. If you have hesitated to part with 3-4K for a complete bike because you were not sure of the shop, Hammerhead eliminates that concern. Call Charles or Lonnie and they will talk to you about your riding style, your habits, your strengths and what you want in a bike and will build out the rig that will allow you to take your riding to a much higher level. No forms or fitment BS - real conversations with guys that ride every day of the week. Why someone would throw down 4-5 grand on a mass produced bike is absolutely beyond me - call these guys first.
Lastly on the 5-spot - I knew the second I threw a leg over this frame that I had come home. I could care less about what everyone else is riding and what they think about my bike for that matter - what i do care about is the fact that this bike is so far beyond my wildest capabilities and that I have finally landed on the bike that will stay with me until I am a crotchety old man telling you trek riding teenagers to piss off as I throw a big rooster tail of mud on you when I pass your butts!

Bottom Line:Okay, I am a relatively aggressive Trail to Free Rider with 9 years of MTB experience and I ride 4-5 times a week. The overall feeling of the bike is very balanced and maneuverable and since buying the bike I have definitely pushed my riding up a level. I'm doing bigger drops than before and I'm jumping doubles (Took a jump class w/ Joe Lawwill which I highly recommend) The bike can do 4 foot wheelie drops without bottoming out. The chassis is very quiet on fast descents. All of the parts work great. The Azonic Bar has a little too much flex but I only notice it on J-Hops when pulling up hard to jump over a curb or similar obstacle. The bike climbs up steep descents with minimum wandering and digs in well on loose terrain. Climbs well out of the saddle on steep technical sections such as rock faces. I am 5'11" and I purchased a large frame. I'm using a 90mm stem and the XY seatpost has a one inch setback. The frame feels perfectly sized and just enough smaller than my 19" Specialized S-Works to provide a slightly more upright riding position. The slacker head angle has allowed me to go down super steep faces that before seemed too daunting but is still very quick turning on tight switchbacks. I have yet to hit a rock while pedaling due to the bottom bracket sagging too low. The BB is just the right height and provides a good combination of ground clearance and ease of remounting the bike when the saddle is raised to regular riding height (I lower my saddle for technical descents). I have thoroughly enjoyed my purchase and my love for the sport has grown since buying this bike, and that's something I didn't think was possible.
There are many fine (and expensive) bikes out there and I can say with a good deal of confidance that this is one of them. Also, the Crank Bros. Candy SL pedals are terrific, easy release without premature release. I've been using Shimano for years without complaint but I get just as good if not better performance with a lot less weight.

Strengths:Greatest trail bike I have ridden. It has a very comfortable fit. Despite the slack head angle, it climbs great. This bike is wonderful on the descent.
Weaknesses:With the standard Romic shock and disc brakes, it's hard to get the bike below 30 lbs. My old bike (Titus Motolite) was 27.5 lbs and at first I thought I felt a difference in my ability to climb . . . but after 3-4 rides I didn't notice it anymore. Still, if you are concerned about weight, but also want a 5" travel bike, you can either put the air shock on the 5 spot or find a lighter frame.

Not a big deal -- but Turner has poor color choices for its bikes. Nearly all competitors (Ellsworth, Ventana, Titus, etc.) offer nicer colors and/or anodized frames.
Similar Products Used:Used to own a Titus Motolite. Ridden many miles on a Turner XCE.
Bike Setup:Romic shock, Fox Vanilla RLC, XTR drivetrain (but XT shifter pods), Avid Juicy brakes, King hubs, Mavic 819 rims
Bottom Line:I spent a lot of time trying to decide between the Switchblade and the 5 Spot. As a former Titus owner and since I live in Phoenix, I really wanted to like the Switchblade more. I think the Titus guys are great and their bikes are fantastic. I demoed the Switchblade several times, and also rode a friend's XCE. In the end, I liked the suspension design of the Turner better than the Switchblade. In the Titus design, when the shock compressed and rebounds, it would slightly push the front of the bike forward. I noticed this most on high speed drop offs and when climbing. It was nice when climbing, but always felt odd when desceding. The Turner suspension didn't act like that, when its shock compresses and rebounds the rear wheel moves up and down -- I get no sensation of being pushed forward. I also went with the 5 spot because of the coil shock (I can also put an air shock on it any time) and its traditional front triangle.

After getting the bike and riding it several times, I'm very happy with my decision. I don't think there's a better bike for me out there.

Bottom Line:Ventana X-5: I conidered the 5-spot and the X-5 (and the Intense EVP 5.5, Id is too small for me). I'm almost 6' - 5" and just short of 200#, so I need an XL and cannot go too light (I've broken 3 frames, and trash light wheelsets, even though I mostly do XC technical riding). I had a 2000 Enduro before this, and 1998 FSR full suspension setup before that.

The X-5 offers all the 5-spot does - and a bit more, which turned out to be important for me. The price was about the same. I purchased the X-5 for three reasons: (1) 6" rocker option - I ride a lot of techincal trails, and being a pretty big guy, wanted the extra travel, (2) the 6" rocker option raises the bottom bracket about 1/2 to 5/8", which is fabulous! I was very tired of whacking my pedals on rocks/obstacles - standard bb heights are too low in my view, especially for techincal riding (even if you use larger tires), (3) four-bar link, active suspension. I know that technically, it's not a Horst link. Although I'm no expert on bike mechanics, I am a structural engineer, and after looking at the slight variation in the suspension on the X-5 link, versus 5-spot and other "Specialized" links, I was convinced that the differnce is insigificant - see the Titus web-site, which is pretty good at explaining the differences (and I wrote this review partly to dispell what Curt from Midway City wrote: "but I wouldn't trade to own a Ventana due to the semi active nature of the design"). I doubt Curt, or almost anyone else, could tell the differnce in the suspension performance. I considered the EVP 5.5, but the frame is a tad small for me, and I am not convinved that the VPP is needed with the new (stable platform) shocks.

Four months of riding now - about 3 times a week. I am really pleased with the frame and overall setup. The bike handles great - so much better then my Enduro that I am very surprised (I have to mention that the 2000 Enduro was really too small for me). Going up, the rear suspension tracks really great (certainly as good as the FSR links I've been riding for the prior 5+ years, and better with the Romic) - I have climbed a few long, tough technical trail sections that I previously had not done without stopping - so, so much for the "semi-active" comment by Curt. It tracks great and is still smooth with only minor bob, for me, a better choice then the VPP option, which reviews indicate is a bit harsh (but I have not used).

It's incredible going down. Suspension just soaks up the bumps - I am flying over sections that I used to slow down on - with confidence. Quad bearings are incredibly smooth! Extra bb height is great - I rarely, if ever, hit my pedals now - adds a lot of confidence going through technical sections. The TALAS RLC is a great match. I can crank it down to 3" and lower the front end on long climbs, and then twist it back to 5" and rip the downhill. Once in a while I lockout the front. With the Romic set to minimize bob, and with the TALAS at 3" or locked out, the X-5 is a very respectable climber.

My build is about 31#, due to frame size (XL),the heavier rims/hubs, tires, pedals, seatpost and bars (non-CF), and shifter/lever/crank setup (versus newer XTR/XT integrated setup). But, as I said, I'm a pretty big guy and the difference between 28 or 31# just isn't a factor for me.

Ventana X-5 is a great choice.

Strengths:Supple, long-feeling suspension that hooks up everywhere, but doesn't bob. Twitch-free handling at any speed on single track, but still plenty quick, even with the 69 head angle. Real pivot bushings that lasted three years on my previous Turner without any maintenance other than regular greasing through the zerks, and an occasional drop of oil on the rubber seals once they got to be about two years old.
Weaknesses:None, so far. I haven't had the bike long, but have near 40 hours riding time on it, since the first week included 7 days of riding in St. George and Moab, Utah (go Gooseberry)!
Similar Products Used:Owned Turner XCE. The 5-Spot seems to be the next refinement in the years-old progression of the XCE's design. Briefly ridden many of the usual suspects, including Blur, Spider, and 5.5 evp.
Bike Setup:Nothing fancy except a Fox Talas fork. 8-speed XT gruppo, king/bontrager wheels, LP post and bars (flat, please), Nokian NBX 2.3 tires with the Stan's tubeless treatment, avid mech disks, you get the picture.
Bottom Line:I 'm impressed. I was a little doubtful the 5-Spot would be much better than my xce , which kept me happy for nearly 3 years of constant riding. It is a very noticeable improvement. It seems that through the magic of Turner's continued refinement of pivot point locations, the true "Horst Link", and the Romic shock, that this bike climbs more efficiently AND with a plusher feeling than my xce did, which had less travel, and a fox vanilla coil shock. The 69 degree head angle really suits the majority of my riding, with a less nervous feel than steeper bikes. It was noticeable on some steep climbs on the rocks in Utah, but adjustment time was less than one hour. I think this is at least partly because Turner kept the fairly steep 73 degree seat tube angle.

Built as described, the bike still came in under 30 pounds. At the risk of exposing the occasional roadie side of my personality, anyone who thinks a couple of pounds REALLY matters on a hard-core trail bike like this should ride a bit more, and cut out couple of (burgers, beers, donuts--you pick) a week!

The only thing I would change on this frameset would be to go back to the unpainted chainstays and seatstays, but that's just personal style preferrence.

Strengths:Awesome! Climbs better than Id and as well as Truth. On flats and down-hill it handles better than both. Just the perfect set-up. No flex, can climb anything. Handles steep technicals and flat-out downhills with extreme confidence.
Weaknesses:Absolutely NONE!
Similar Products Used:Ellsworth Id and Truth (sure it's the truth, huh.) Had each for more than a season. Intense, Blur demo.
Bike Setup:XTR, Hayes, Dave's Wheels, Fox and Romic. Weight 27 lbs. With Fox air this is a 25 lb bike!
Bottom Line:This is it. Until another frame maker beats this Turner you will be riding the best bike on the trail or course. 123Bikes delivered the bike as promised.

If you've purchase or are considering an Id or Truth and want to have fun riding again buy this bike. You'll be glad you did.

Strengths:Wow, the five spot has so many strenths. First it A very comfortable bike to ride. It took me to secounds to get used to the geometry coming off a RM Instinct wich has a racing feel. The bike climbs very well. It rolls over roots, rocks ledges like there not there. Obsticles that would stop my Instinct dead in its tracks seem to dissapear as I hit them. The Romic shock has no noticible bob when hammering in my seat. The bike feels very stiff on fireroad climbs too.
This bike loves to go downhill fast. The Coil romic sucks up bumps and begs for more speed. The 69 degree head angle really helps on decents and doesent hinder on climbs. Im not sure how they do this but it works. Overall its an easy riding bike
Weaknesses:Price- When compared to other bikes of its nature its in the same ballpark. But 1895 for a frame is ridiculus.
Stickes-They suck,Im probably going to take them off(no big deal)

Bike Setup:Med Blk 5-spot,Magura Marta sl, King Head, King hubs on 3.1, 2004 xt cranks, Sram xo rear with x-9 shifters, xt front der, xt cassette, Thompson post and stem, Answere bars, Odi lock-ons, Vert pros ust. Not sur of the weight but it feels nimble on climbs
Bottom Line:Great bike, It has lived up to my expectations so far(which are very high). I was alittle worried about the extra couple of pounds for Telluride colorado riding, which is very very steep but it will not be an issue. If you considering a long travel trail bike the 5-spot needs to on your list. I cant give it 5 on value because no frame should be over 1500 buck. But still a great value compared with ellsworth and intense.

Strengths:This is the best technical climbing bike I'v ever ridden. And it does everything else great too. Not too heavy. Very balanced handler that feels like it has more travel than advertised while desending.
Weaknesses:Price, stickers still suck, The finish scratches easier than my other powdercoated frames I've had.
Similar Products Used:Elsworth truth, foes weasel, bullet, I drive, jeckle, blur, uzzidh.
Bike Setup:Red frame and all black Parts. Manitou black 120, King hubs & headset, Ryno light XL rims 32 straight gage spokes & brass nipples Turbine crankset & BB XO shifters and derailure XT front der. Thompson post, Easton MG 60 Stem & Monkeylight bar, Frog cromo peddles and Hayes heavy duty brakes. 27 1/2 Lbs.
Bottom Line:Bets all around bike ever and Iv'e owned about 10 FS rigs in as many years. Peddles better than my 2000 truth and 02 Blur, desends better than all but my Foes fly. Wish there was a 6 inch option like with Ventana but I wouldn't trade to own a Ventana due to the semi active nature of the design. If it continues to collect scratches like it has I may send it out for a harder coating.

Strengths:Confidence inspiring, excellent handling at speed, dead sexy
Weaknesses:Price a little steep, stickers grip downtube with the tensile strength of a 3 year old child's fist. Headbadge fell off.
Similar Products Used:Ellsworth Truth, Kona King (scandium) Maverick Reposado, Ducati Monster
Bike Setup:XTR
Hope M4's
WTB Laser Disc Lites
Fox Vanilla RL (to be replaced by Maverick triple crown when I've got more cash)
Bottom Line:The bike is very dialled in. The much bandied about line about it, "making a good rider better and an average one good," is totally accurate in the the bike is very forgiving of mistakes and has made my infantile bike handling skills somewhat decent. It has the amazing ability to make you feel you are on your favorite bike right out of the box.

Before this I approached jumps with the trepidation of an 18 year virgin bride on her wedding night. Now I actually sail (very low) of jumps etc.

It stays very hooked up even when climbing muddy or rut infested hills. A friend actually told me he could see the rear tire clawing into the ground and spitting dirt up at him as if teasing him.

So far I have to say that owning the 5 Spot has made riding that much more fun because it allows you to try things you swould be scared to the point of spontaneous defication on other rides.

My only complaint is the rather limpid stickers and head badge which coming off after the first wash, and the fact the Casey at Turner wants to charge me for replacements. I would expect better quality decals for the 2K asking price, I subtract one flamming turd because of this. Also the waiting period is very LONG.

Anyway it's only been 3 rides. Will update further as I learn more

Strengths:Coil over Romic (I love coil over shocks)
Five inches of travel front and rear (perfect for my type of riding)
Durable

Weaknesses:A bit of a squeek from my Romic shock.

A variety of others.
Bike Setup:2004 Marathon S 120mm (love this fork).
Hayes brakes and hubs.
XT/SRAM mix.
Thomson post and stem.
IRC Backcountry tires.
Lots of great stuff.
Bottom Line:I like this bike a ton. I don't know what it is but this bike helps me descend faster and climb better. The geometry is Spot on (pun intended). However, I do like to drop my fork down with the ECC on long climbs. The Romic shock and Marzocchi fork just allow me to float over stuff that would have knocked me around on prior air shocked bikes. I'm still suspect of the bushings, but everyone says they will hold up great.

This bike is a 69 degree head angled bike, so tight stuff is not the highlight of this bike's abilities. A 70/71 would be better.

Also, this is a 5" travel bike. If you live in a smooth area, you may be better suited off with a Burner or other bike with less travel. It may be overkill.

The frame is over 7 lbs, but you won't mind because it climbs so well and feels some stable. I never feel like I'm going to go over the handlebar on this bike like former bikes. You can ride stuff on this bike that would stop other shorter travel bikes in their tracks.

I'm a fan! I admit. However, depending on your needs, this may or may not be your best bet.

Good luck,

Jaybo
