Duration Product Used:3 months
Purchased At:came with bike from KHS
Weaknesses:The fork leaked air pressure after a half dozen rides. I had to pump it up about once every ten days. The fork broke at the dropout.
Similar Products Used:X-fly 100, Fox float 100 RL
Bike Setup:KHS EXT pro, lots of upgrades.
Bottom Line:I was riding along a rolling, high speed decent (approx 25-30mph)with 3-4 foot drops when the fork snapped near the dropout. I tacoed the front wheel and barely escaped serious injury. KHS provided me with a new wheel and replaced the fork with a Marzocchi X-fly 100 free of charge. Great fork! Better in every way. I was told that this wasn't the first Rockshox Duke SL that had failed in this manner. Also, that it was easier to retrofit my bike with another fork than to wait 3 months for warranty service. I've been riding on the X-fly for the last 2 1/2 years with no problems.

Weaknesses:Blew the seals after two years. But I guess i really pushed it for two years without getting the shock serviced.

Bottom Line:My bike came with a SID long travel. I was simply not producing the claimed 100mm of travel and it was not plush at all. I got myself a the DUKE sl with 100mm and let me tell you, plush plush plush. Love the fork, still going great.

Strengths:Kinda light, can get a good deal online, the stupid rockshox stickers fall off which improves the aesthetics
Weaknesses:Seals (or something) blew, RockShox has had the fork for a month now, still no word.
Similar Products Used:Judy TT, Marzocchi MX Comp, Marzocchi Z4
Bike Setup:Rockhopper FSR
Bottom Line:This fork was a great improvement over the crap Judy that came with my bike, and it's relatively light. I have to say after reluctantly switching to a Marzocchi MX Comp after the Duke blew out mid-season, the Duke kinda sucks in comparison. The Marzocchi goes straight over all kinds of stuff that made the Duke bounce around like a pogo stick. I found it harder to hold my line on technical climbs with the Duke and had tried several setups. The Duke is OK if you're on a budget and you get a deal, and it's a worthy upgrade if you're riding a real sh*t fork - if it doesn't break you can ride all kinds of stuff with it, but the (chearper MSRP) Marzocchi blows it away.

Weaknesses:rebound adjuster not reliable but see note below. Perhaps a slight loss of low speed sensitivity but also see note below.
Similar Products Used:2000 rs sid xc , 2001 rs sid xc,

Bottom Line:Overall - coming from a sid these dukes are very stiff and feel almost bottomless although the sids for the weight benefits are great, if you want cush and stiff why buy a sub 3ib fork and then complain of flex - get realistic folks!

The only weak point seems to be the rebound adjuster, after a while it seems to stop working HOWEVER this happened on my sid's when it happens don't whinge, instead get it to a REPUTABLE fork specialist (Tim Flooks here in the UK) and get it rebuilt for approx £65 which includes getting fixed damping installed instead of the adjuster, they will come back far, far plusher and more reliable than from the factory. Overall a brilliant, great looking fork for sensible money, I do a lot of 20-30 mile day rides and have not been let down

Similar Products Used:judys, bombers, manitous.
Bike Setup:03 nrs 2, 02 duke sl, mavic disc wheels, avid mechs, xt hubs, easton carbon riser, xt drivetrain, titec post, selle italia seat, kore stem.
Bottom Line:I got this fork when they first came out. It has been transfered to a second bike during this time. I weigh in at about 200 and ride 4 to 5 times a week on it. I have never had any problems with this fork. I dont constantly perform maintenance on it. I just keep the area around the seals clean. It doesnt leak any air or any oil. It has a nice progressive feel, supple at the top, and then stiffens up through the travel. The rebound adjustment works. When I screw it all the way in it returns very slowly, when screwed out it returns fast. I run it just short of snapping back.
I ride aggresivly, but I know that the fork is intended for xc use, and I dont expect it to handle anything very extreme.
I occasionaly take 3 footers no problem, no bottoming. I ride through rock gardens no problem. I have complete confidence in this fork. 4 flammers just because I know a marz or fox would be a true 5, but this a good probuct.

Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $225.00
Purchased At:Supergo
Strengths:Decent price, fairly light.
Weaknesses:Busihing slop developed after 6 months! Rebound damping doesn't provide enough range of adjustment.
Similar Products Used:Fox Float, various Marzocchi & Manitou forks, Judy SL, Duke XC, Duke C.
Bike Setup:Santa Cruz Blur, XT/XTR.
Bottom Line:I originally bought this fork to replace a 2001 Judy SL which was a real piece of junk. When the Duke SL was new, it provided better feel and more precise steering than the Judy. But after about two to three months I noticed it started to loosen up. I bought a Blur frame two months ago and transferred the almost-new Duke fork to the new frame thinking the 100mm Duke would be a good match. During our last race at Laguna Seca, I noticed the fork was packing up a bit on some of the high speed runs and attributed it to the damping but found out the bushings were toast. This sucks considering the fork is only about 6 months old.

I have recently replaced the Duke with a Fox Float which is the fork I should have started with on the Blur. The Duke is going back to Rockshox for service under warranty (I hope). I really didn't want to buy another fork right in the middle of the season, but Rockshox is not too consistent when it comes to turning around their warranty repairs and I didn't want to be without a bike for two to three months. I will not hold my breath waiting for Rockshox to return it.

If you have ever have had a warranty issue with Rockshox, you know that you cannot send it back to them directly rather you need to go through a local retailer. I bought a fork for my son's bike through Colorado Cyclist on the web last summer and it failed. Colorado Cyclist told me I would have to contact Rockshox for warranty service who in turn told me to work with a LBS. The LBS didn't take too kindly to sending back my mail-order fork. It took 2 months to get it back.

This is my last Rockshox product. Every fork I have owned so far (six of them) and one SID Race rear shock have all failed within a year and needed to be repaired. I am a XC rider and do not abuse my stuff. I perform all recommended service and take care of my gear. Rockshox's customer support is horrible and in the long run I have paid out way more than I should have on this crap.

I usually don't write such negative reviews but Rockshox has earned it. Buy this fork if you ride local paved and dirt bike trails that are smooth. Forget it if you are looking for a decent XC fork that you can count on for occasional racing duty or for real MTB trails and technical stuff.

Bottom Line:This fork (2002) is a rockin deal. The new 03 Duke SL
is $400, and it isn't much different than the 02
Duke air 100. I have ridden this fork for a year. No
leaks, no problems, and great performance, but only AFTER
I changed the oil viscosity. The 1/4 turn rebound adjuster didn't seem to work at all. I drained both the damping oil and the semi-bath oil, replacing it with 7.5 wt marzocchi fork oil, and WALAH!!!! The fork damping adjuster now actually works.(I have it set close to full "open") This
oil change is no easy task (download instr. from RockShox)
but made a HUGE difference in damping characteristics.
Worth the whole 2 hrs it took to do it. (remove the fork
completely from your frameset) If you can get one of

It is one great riding 4" travel air fork....

Strengths:durable, low maintenance item, has enough modulation to set it up the way you like it, everything stated below...
Weaknesses:the plastic cap is a pain to take off unless you try my method(read below). this fork is not plush if you weigh under 150 pounds. stickers did fall right off but who needs them.
Similar Products Used:none
Bike Setup:GT Zaskar Team with lots of goodies
Bottom Line:This is a great fork if you are a heavier than me. I'm 150 pounds and have to ride this fork at lower air pressure than specified to feel it working. This fork, like other air forks, isn't sensitive to small bumps, but then again maybe it's just me. This has been a great fork on roads and climbs because of its stiffness. Due to my weight and the fork's characteristics I can use it as a light freeride fork. If you are a heavier person look into this fork. It comes with a shock pump from most retailers. But if you are under 150 pounds try spring loaded forks.

and as for the plastic cap....this is what worked for me: the first time you unscrew it, coat the threads with a layer of grease. it will go in and out with minimum effort and won't wear away the threads as much. good luck

Strengths:RIGIDITY, lightweight (under 4 lbs), great travel (100 mm or 4 inches), fully adjustable air shock spring stiffness, plush ride, looks good and inexpensive.
Weaknesses:Lacks external adjusted pure damping and lockout (but not a big deal, read below)
Similar Products Used:'02 SID SL
Bike Setup:GT Zaskar hardtail
Bottom Line:
I bought the Duke SL 100 mm to replace an '02 SID SL I bought last year for my GT Zaskar hardtail. I had a negative experience with the SID and thought it was a very poor performer as a trail bike shock for someone of my weight (185 lbs). Im a normal Joe Blow X-country rider, I don't free ride or do anything crazy but I do ride on some fairly rugged terrain with roots rocks and gulches. My SID was way too flexy and instilled a real sense of fear and insecurity while riding with it. Although I was pleased with the performance of the SID's air shock, which has held up really well. So I decided to get a Duke with the same basic air shock design (except without the negative chamber) and with a simpler dampening arrangement.

The bottom line is the '02 Duke SL 100 mm rocks. It has outstanding rigidity, low weight (well under 4 lbs), and lots of plush travel. Although the dampening is not as nice as the SID's fully adjustable (with lockout) pure system, this has proven to be a non-issue with the Duke. I dont want to lockout the Duke, while Im on the trail I want my shock to absorb shocks and help me stay in control of the bike...and thats exactly what it does without excessive bob or energy robbing bounce. The only time I even remotely miss a lockout is if Im on the road...and even here as long as I remain seated and apply a nice steady, consistent "road cadence" the shock barely moves at all. The lack of lockout is a non issue with this shock. The damping can still be adjusted by tweaking the rebound knob and by changing the weight of the oil for your weight. And once its set, thats it your good to go.

Since riding the Duke on the trail a few times I am convinced that I should have bought this fork last year instead of the overpriced and underperforming SID SL. I now have a real sense of security with my bike that I never had with the SID. It is RIGID and beefy! I can pummel down hills, and blast over rocks and logs without a second thought now. No more scarey spaghetti noodling sessions with the SID. I feel secure and confident with this shock and also just plain comfortable. I never knew what I was missing.

Another really great byproduct is that the 100 mm shock raises the front end of my GT Zaskar hardtail somewhat. This has really improved the overall handling of the bike. The pedal and bottom bracket clearance are increased so that now I can leap right over logs and rocks without unclipping that would have stopped me dead in my tracks on the SID. My bike is more stable going down hills. The bike also wheelies easier, which was an unanticipated benefit. Now I can lift the front end fairly easily, at speed or at a crawl. which has allowed me to wheelie through big mud puddles (which helps keep me clean and keep my bike in control), and wheelie over gulches and obstacles that would "steer you wrong" if you didn't float the front tire over them first. Some of the wheelie manuevers I've been pulling with the 100 mm Duke I wouldn't dream of with the SID SL. I just cant get over the difference.

Overall if you are over 120 lbs and need a sturdy, light, trailbike (or race) fork, then the Duke 100 mm SL is the way to go. Plus its widely availble for well under $200 smackers!

Bottom Line:This is the 80mm, replacement on my Mars that pretty much blew out. Probably when I extended my rides to rolling down rocks.

I realized what a piece of crap that Mars (Light, but feels like spring)was after switching to the Duke, a definite minimum requirement for a 200+lb rider like me who XC and do occassional drops. Got that stiff, heavy duty feel.

Unlike the Mars that feels totally out of control over baby heads, I feel more in control with the Duke and it does trek well over the rocks....great rebound, I suppose.

It's no Fox Forx, but for the price....I ain't complainin cuz it performs as good at the level of any $300-$400 forks in the market.

Strengths:This is the 2003 Duke SL U-Turn (reviewed here since no category for it yet). Solid fork, not at all flimsy.Have tried the U-Turn travel adjustment in various settings; generally run at 90 cm unless very steep climbing (63 cm) or rough, steep descents (108 cm)
Weaknesses:Haven't found any yet but have only ridden for one month+
Similar Products Used:Hard tail had 2000 Manitou SXR: solid fork with lots of adjustment-tended to understeer till I set the preload down to 0 to account for my bodyweight (147). 2001 FSR came with Judy SL: pretty flimsy compared to the SXR. Strictly for bike paths or very timid riders who haven't experienced better. I think the tiny stanchions make the Judy hunt for a line other than the one you're trying to follow. Took it off and installed the SXR; much better.
Now I have the Duke SL Uturn: 30 mm stanchions-solid feel, adjustable travel, compression and rebound adjustment. What more could an aggressive cross country trail rider want. I was leery of Rock Shox after the Judy but now I'm cured.
Bike Setup:2001 Specialized FSR with several upgrades
Bottom Line:Universal had the best price on these and no sales tax.
Rock Shox Owner's Manuals are very minimal in terms of tuning info. Even though the owner's manual gives you no clue, apparently Pure Delite is really a type of compression damping adjustment, but even Sram's (Rock Shox') tech adviser wasn't able to explain it to me very well by email. Maybe they'll figure it out. Basically the Duke is set up with a factory spring suited to 165 # riders. Even though the manual says don't use Pure Delite to adjust the spring rate, it is compression adjustment, so if your weight is lower than 165 stay toward the low end of the 20-60 PSI range and vice versa if heavier. I like the rebound set towards full fast. So far I like the fork :If you're looking for a solid, smooth fork with adjustable travel, it's considerably cheaper than the Fox (especially the $700 adjustable travel TALAS), and probably just about as strong.Of course it's still too early to tell about durability, but I'll let you know.
It's not dukey.

Anyways, can't beat the $169.00 price tag.

They are nice on the XC bumpy flats. Rebound is nice. I like to keep the forks stiff. Adjustment is a breeze.

On the downhill, it's not as exhilerating as the Kona P2, but it sure is smoother. Uphill? Well, lets just say I ain't selling my Konas.

The drops are the same on either. At 5ft or greater, 100mm and rigid feel the same.

Depending on the ride, I'll swap between my Kona rigid and the Duke SL.

Bottom Line:For $200 it is hard to complain about this fork, you get a lot for you money, including adjustable rebound. The only thing I do not like about it is that it still has an air fork feel, which is good and bad. It is good for climbing, doesn't really bob and it is great for taking up a big hit. The fork feels smooth when you push down on it, but like all air forks I have tried, it is not plush. It simply does not do as good a job as a coil fork at taking up small bumps. I think it is a great deal at around $200, but if I had spent more money I would have been disappointed. For the riding that I do, there are better forks, but they are much more expensive. If you don't have a lot of money and need a sturdy fork, this may be the ideal fork for you. Oh yes, I other thing I like is that it doesn't creak like all the recent Marzocchi forks I have owned. I give it 5 overall, because I don't think any other fork can touch it in the $200 range, but against $300 and up forks, the competition is a lot tougher.

When I pulled that beauty out of the box, thought it was the old RST. My scales showed an even 4 lbs so I took it down to a certified meter scale - 3lbs 14+ ounces (close to 3.9). Bummer, still a pretty good value but nothing like advertised. For that weight, I'd spend the extra $ and try a Zuch. Have a Mars Super on the way. The dampning works well and with the option of the adjustable rebound (I have it set at about half) and positive air makes the fork a very versitile package. Only my second pair of forks, but have ridden other types on mates bikes.....I like mine more. Good value at 2002 run out sale. Just brought a new NRS1, and thinking of swapping the SIDS for the 02 Duke SL's.

Bottom Line:This is preliminary review of the 03 Duke SL. I was looking for a durable 80mm air fork to replace my SIDs (too flexible now that I have fitted disks). I took a chance on the the 03 Dukes as they are available now in 80mm. They seem to have improved adjustment for damping over the 02 model, and I was briefly happy with my decision, until after just four hours of use I noticed significant play in the bushings ... argh! I don't know if this is a one-off or a new-for-03 feature of all Dukes. I'll update this review when I find out more.

Weaknesses:Perhaps not a weakness, but the squish noise can be alarming, and seems to intensify with added air pressure
Similar Products Used:Judy (T)otal (T)rash, SID
Bike Setup:Kona X country
Bottom Line:This is one of the best deals out there as far as shocks are concerned. This thing is stiff overall, but plush when it needs to be. It gets an 8 out of 10 for soaking up small bumps on level ground, and 9 out of 10 for all other applications. I have the 100mm travel version, and I have used it on some short but very steep downhill that I probably shouldn't have attempted with my X country rig, and I couldn't believe how well it held up. If I would have tried it with a Judy or a SID, well, I probably wouldn't be writing this review... I weigh 155, and I usually keep the air pressure at 125-135, with the rebound damping halfway between the middle and high settings. I get a little bob on level ground, but its nothing I can't live with. When it comes to climbing hills, this fork really shines. It is so stiff in the first inch of travel, that it may as well have a lockout. I have been able to climb things that had me saying "not so sure." Very good job by ROCK SHOX!

Bottom Line:Been about a month since last review. This baby kicks some serious booty. Super adjustable (add/let out air). Initially I had problem after two or three days would loose about 20lbs of pressure, when I put air in, would not hold. After pumping fork several times and refilling air would stay. Never leaked during my trail riding. Recently added Finishline Teflon lube, that seens to have solved to problem, air last a week or so with no pressure loss now. I hear all air shocks leak over time. On the trail they handle anything I throw at them (mind you I'm no freerider and only 160 lbs). Paint on arch lost a 1" chunk of paint when tire rolled rock thru arch. That said I love these forks for the price they rule. New 2003 has lockout but unless you need that this a great buy.

Having ridden that old Manitou 5 Ti before, the Duke has completely change my riding, dropped almost 30 minutes off trail run. It is plush stiff, light and handles drops and the rough stuff quite well. I finish the trail refreshed not beaten up. Gotten use to the squish noise, too. They are super adjustable to any terrain by adding or letting air out. Initially they seem to be losing air. When I pumped them up the first try they let the air out. After pumping them a few times and refilling them they held the air ok. Your guess is as good as mine why. Added a few drops of Finishline Teflon lube to stanchion seals, this solved the problem. They now hold same pressure for up to a week. Hey air shocks all leak some air but this is totally acceptable. They have yet to bottom out on me set to 100lbs, which is below recommended lbs. for my weight. The paint does not stick well to the legs. A rock picked up the the tire took off a chunk of paint on the arch. But hey it works awesome so who gives if it chips here and there. For the price they are going for, worth every penny. Sure the 2003 has a lockout feature but unless you need that this baby is just as good. Next review in six months. Live to ride, ride for life.

At the end of the course was a long extremely rocky downhill complete with a wide assortment of drop offs, ledges, baby heads, and the like. This fork handled all the abuse with nary a complaint. WOW, I was quite impressed, I am a big guy (5'11", 260) and put quite a deal of abuse on all my equipment, and this has been the one piece of equipment that I have yet to worry about or think of replacing it, which is more than I can say for my seatpost and handlebar. In my opinion this is the best air fork on the market that is without a lockout, but if you really need that you can get it on the 2003 Duke Race, heck, you can even get the remote lockout!

Bottom Line:Very nice fork especially for the price. It's very plush on big rocks and drops. I agree with several other reviewers that there is a little bit of stiffness at the beginning of the travel. When you first push down on the fork it is real stiff then it softens up after a couple of strokes. I also notice the air "squish" noise. Kinda irritating but not a big deal. I adjust mine below Rock Shox's recommendation also.I like an active plush ride to absorb nasty rocks and rough terrain. I run mine at about 95psi and I'm 155#. I actually like the 1/4 turn rebound adjustment. My old SX had about 6 turns adjustment and it was hard to get the adjustment right. With the Duke you can make small adjustments and feel it. I highly recommend this fork for recreational riders or racers (Duke Race)looking for a stiff good riding fork at a reasonable price. If you need the lightest weight possible you can spend a bunch more money on something lighter and more flexible-but I wouldn't.

Bottom Line:This fork works better than I thought. My 5" fork made my quasi moto slow in the turns so I got this to lower the front end a bit. Now it turns in fast and holds a line well. It's super smooth and tracks perfectly. I don't know what others are saying but I pump the fork up pretty close to what Rockshox recommends. I weigh in at 135 and pump the fork up to 125 pounds. Any less and the fork bottoms out on big rocky sections and jumps. It's ok though cuz you can't really tell when it does bottom out; it's that cush. The only thing that I don't like is the stiction at the first half inch of travel. I thought it would go away after a while but after hours of hard riding it's still there. When I stop and get back on the bike, it's there but goes away when you ride. Not a big deal though, I'll just add a little lube to stanctions. Go out and buy this fork if you ride aggressive trails.

Got the Duke SL very cheap, the travel and weight was just right. Once set up correctly, the fork is suprisingly plush, especially in the beginning of it's travel.

I've only got 2 rides on the fork, but it seems to be as good as everyone says.

The only issue so far is that noise it makes when I compress it for the first 3-4 times during a ride. Sounds like the seals are letting a tiny bit of air escape. We'll see after a few more rides.

This fork is very supple over small stuff & handles medium & big hits well. I added a little redrum to the air chanber as per one of RS's hints, & like the feel better. Without the oil, the fork almost seemed to have bottomless travel, but also would too easily use much of it's travel. It also appears (at least on my bike) that RS's air pressure recomendations are a little high. I weigh 180 & have 115 lbs of air in the fork. All in all a great fork & pretty light for a 100 MM fork.

Progressive travel does very well on the big hits too. Very stiff, reliable and predictable. No stickers on the sides to get ripped up, I think it looks sweet. Mine doesn't leak a bit of air, hopefully it will stay that way. I weigh 190lbs and this fork is perfect for me, all for 2 bills, what more could I ask for? By the way, although they claim it weighs 3.3 lbs, this is without oil so expect more like 3.6 or 3.7, not bad for a $200 100mm travel fork. If your a weight weenie pay the big bucks for a light but very flexy high maintenance sid.

As stiff as the Psylo and stiffer than the others mentioned above. The bike goes where I point it. Real nice compression stroke. Feels even better than the coil sprung Psylo. The pressure listed in the manual seem high to me. Im running 20 psi less tan recommended. Ive seen the SLs selling for $200 now. What a bargain!

Favorite Trail:I have lots of them...
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $265.00
Purchased At:Ebay
Strengths:Reasonable price. Not too heavy (1705 g). Stiff. 4 inches of useable travel. Nice aesthetics. Smooth. All the basics nothing bothersome and extra. Rebound damping has an excellent range of adjustment. Compression damping perfect (for me) as set by factory.
Weaknesses:Maybe not progressive enough (The Rockshox Duke tuning manual states that up to 7 more cc of Redrum oil - for 10 cc total - may be added to the top of the air piston to increase the progression of the spring rate). So this may not be a big issue. No bells and whistles. The lack of travel adjustment, lockout, and compression damping adjustment. I have a fork with lockout, and I don't use it. I like 100mm of travel, don't need less. Compression damping is spot on for me. However, I realize other people may desire these features, and this fork doesn't have them.
No fork boots (I like them to keep rocks and hard stuff from scratching the surface of the stanchion tubes). I put Lizard skins on.
Similar Products Used:Rockshox Indy, Manitou SX-R, Manitou Mars 1.
Bike Setup:Jamis Dakar Expert with Fox Vanilla float R.
Bottom Line:I am extreamly pleased with the performance of my Duke SL. I can ride right over curbs without getting out of the saddle, or picking up the front end (this fork is going to make an even lazier rider out of me). Small bumps??? What are those? This fork was smoother before breaking in than either of my Manitou forks after they broke in (its about as plush as I remember my friends X-vert air as being). It must be the PTFE (teflon) coating on the stanchions, and the open bath design. The Rebound damping is sweet. I am very particular about the speed my fork rebounds. It is very easy to dial the Duke in. I have taken some small jumps and the fork lands me like a magic carpet, no excess dive. I do get this feeling that this fork doesn't have a highly progressive spring rate. Once the snow melts and I go ride more challenging terrain I will know for sure. If it isn't as progressive as I would like, I will add a few more cc of oil to the top of the air piston. That should bump the progression up a bit. Steering precision is excellent, better than anything else I have. There is no bushing slop. Very tight, which is good. I hate bushing slop.
Considering my last experience with Rockshox (my Indy fork) and all the problems past Rockshox forks have had, I was ready to buy a Manitou Black. I read the reviews, and compared features and prices, as well as comparing forks on bike at the LBS and decided that I would take a risk and try my luck with the DUKE. Bottom line, I am glad I decided on the Duke.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $189.00
Purchased At:Supergo as a blemish
Strengths:stiff, plush, strong, absorbs all the little jitters in the trail really well, perfect amount of travel for trailriding.looks great in all black, really smooth, light even with the big tubes
Weaknesses:not extremly rigid, has stiction on the first compression of the day. doesnt stiffen up through its travel enough.
Bike Setup:really changed up 2000 giant xct1
Bottom Line:Small hitts-Takes up every single liitle bump in the trail just perfectly, in the corners it keeps your tire glued to the ground and does not flex.
Medium hits-This fork will take medium hits probably better than any other 3 inch fork out there, it tends to go a liitle far into its travel, but it comes apart qiuck enough to make up for it. I'm able to hit the corners at atleast 5 mph faster than on my old Sid. This fork also handles the little 1-2 foot drops in the trail well.
Big hits-i do not recomend this as a big hit fork for someone over 160. Just a few days ago it took it on its first urban ride, I'm one of those guys who end up going over a 13 set stair gap or hitting a 7 footer to flat. despite the constant big hit pounding it never made any weird noises or loose any air or oil. it did bottom out really bad in the 6-7 footers. it is very consistant fork and really took the hit out of every thing compared to my sid.
Don't worry you trials guys, this fork is not that hard to do trials stuff with and won't efect your bunnys to much.

Bottom Line:I had a sid sl 80mm and when I switched to discs, the flex was way too much for me. I have ridden the Duke about 50 miles now and I have no regrets. The difference in stiffness is unbeleivable and it tracks extremely well. The first thing that surprised me is that the height from the axle to the top of the crown was only about 1/8 inch taller than my sid despite having 20mm more travel. I didn't weigh it because I'm capable of carrying an extra half pound or so without the risk of injury but I didn't notice any difference in the front end weight of my bike at all. I feel that this was a definite upgrade in every way for my bike without any sacrifices.

Strengths:Hard to tell, this is a good fork if you are used to a SID because it is more rigid.
Weaknesses:Hard ride, really not smooth on small to medium impacts. It only seem to react well to sharp medium impacts but fails again if you really hit something big, where it bottoms easily
Similar Products Used:Lots and Lots, RS, Marxocchi, Rox Shock
Bike Setup:GT hard tail (19", to big for me)
Bottom Line:This is strange. It is a fork that is as bad as a SID (which only works well for really specialized applications: racing at a expert-pro level), but weights a bit more than (or close to) 4 pounds (the manifacturer weight mentioned above is just the usual joke from RS). There are vastly, VASTLY, superior offers from Marzocchi and Fox at this weight. It only makes sense if you are racing AND you want something that does not acts like a noodle as the SID does

Strengths:The 100 is a must for any downhilling. Its stiff but you need the travel for any dropping off. Soaks up bumps real nice on hard pak cross country riding. Been using and abusing it and I only noticed slight difference from new. Beefy design is solid. Stronger than the frame. It can handle rocks about the size of graprfruits but after that you better get a psylo.
Weaknesses:Not quite enough bounce for the technical terrain in Hawaii. It will get you just about anywhere but you kinda wish you had more to get home. The 2001 psylo is only 250 online. Why not go all the way. Also it kinda squeeks cause the air.

Bottom Line:I have only used this fork for a few months but I have not had a single thing go wrong with it. I was told not to go with RS by a few peolpe who are big time Manitou freaks. They warned that I would be dealing with alot of problems. But I feel that I made the right choice. The price was right and it came with a pump. That was a nice plus. I think that Manitou needs to take a lesson from RS and follow their lead. I would not recommend the fork for a weight weenie, but for those of us who need a full 100mm of travel and you want a light fork this is for you.
Again the fork takes anything that you throw at it.

Bottom Line:Good fork for the money, got tired of the flexy Sid SL. Performs more like a motorcycle fork. Sid was too active for me, bobbed everytime I hit a pebble and front end would search for a line. Got this fork and I love the 4" travel. I wouldn't get the Duke Race because its only slightly lighter and doesn't have as much travel. Also it is dual air which means twice the amount of seals could go bad. The Duke sl has a negative coil spring instead of air which suits me fine. Would like to get my hands on a Psylo to compare though

Bottom Line:MSRP is $360.00 got mine for $300.00. Good price on a good fork. The compression stroke feels great. (Marzocchi finally went to negative springs so this is a nice form of flattery.) Damping at small bumps and ripples is good, and Damping at Mid and Big Hits at speed (15-30mph) is Great. I replaced a 99 Z.1 BAM with this fork. The performance plus the 1 pound weight loss was worth it. Now we will see how it stacks up to the Marzocchi MXR Coil/Air I just picked up. RS and Marzocchi are coming out with some excellent mid range products. You don't have to spend alot to get alot. Very impressed with both companies for 2002.

If the seals last a year then a Great Fork, and will remain 5 turds across the board. If not will Drop 1-2 turds.
