Strength:

Very Inexpensive for a dual crown fork. Very Durable. Low Maintanance.

Weakness:

Bottoms out very hard on large jumps. Even with the modifications as stated by the review below I bottomed out on large jumps. I just bought a Rock Shox SID XL. It is a world of difference in performance. It costs $500 more retail, but I paid only $350 for a 2000 model on a closeout sale. It can also be bought through the MTBR classifieds for less than $400 in like new condition. It is also very short for a free ride/DH fork. It is more suited for crosscountry even though dampening is very bad when the going gets hairy. I would definitely not recommend this fork.

If looks is all you are looking for then this is the fork for you. On the other hand if you want real performance look somewhere else.

Strength:

Price. Dual Crown. Performance when set up correctly.

Weakness:

A little heavy. Needs regular maintenance.

If you have any Bike know-how you will be able to adjust the performance of this fork. First off when you take the fork apart and clean it(which needs to be done in a timely basis) you can change the grease to suit your riding style. I use a very thick grease called Bee's Wax(available at most bike shops) because I ride mostly hardpack. Make sure to lube everything completely. This will also give you very good dampening and eliminate the pogo effect. The other thing you can do is when you put the fork legs on, tighten them all the way and then unscrew them 2 full turns. This will give you an additional 1/2 inch of travel which will most likely eliminate the problem with bottoming out. I have never bottomed out after doing this. Don't worry the fork will not fall apart because it isn't tightened completely. There is no way the fork will come apart. To improve the look of the fork I cut off the boots and stupid looking 'rubber thing' inbetween the dual crowns. I then installed LIZARD SKINS fork protectors. This will make it easier to give the fork a quick lube before a long ride. If you set it up this way you should have no problems and it will feel like a $500 fork at a fraction of the price.

Strength:

price,lots of travel,double crown......

Weakness:

no adjustability at all,its heavy....

this fork is nothing but a big pogo stick....you truly get what you pay for,it can take a beating though,I'm 6',230 lbs. and of course it bottoms easily, im trying to find replacement springs for it,but im not having much luck. I
e-mailed RST to ask for stronger springs, they just sent me 2 rubber blocks to stick in there, didnt notice much of a difference......

I have these things on my bike...I don't know what the difference is between these and the 281DH model. From the specs on the 281DH, these look about the same. Lack of adjustability kinda sux, but they're doing a great job so far. I weigh about 185 and the manual says they're set for 160-180 lb riders over moderately rough terrain...I've taken them down some pretty wild stuff and they're holding up great...I just want to get some stiffer springs 'cause I bottom them out at least 3 or 4 times every time I take it down a big hill. These deserve 4 chili's 'cause they're inexpensive and perform well...I'd give it 5 but there's no adjustability.
