This fork can barely do anything except for like trail riding. I talked to the guys at Answer and they said it can barely do more than take a curb. Like 10 times after I landed the shaft cap blew out w/ the spring into my chest and left a bruise, and to my surprise only had a spring in one side. I finally got an '03 Duke XC w/ UTURN. I suggest making this upgrade. It has awsome rebound, can take just about any cross country hit. Its $50 less than the SL, and works just as well and is 4.19 instead of 4.13 for the sl. Manitou lost my trust.

I never realized how bad this fork SUCKED until I bought a 2002 Trek 8000 that had a Duke XC. The Magnum doesn't absorb anything. I watch it when I ride and the thing doesn't move except for really big hits. When I hit a jump, the fork pops back out with a KA-THUNK noise. I hate that. I might as well be riding a rigid bike. I finally took this thing off the 6000 and put a Duxe XC on this one too. You can pick up the Duke XC from pricepoint for about $159. WAY better fork.

nothing you wouldnt expect with such an inexpensive fork
Bottom Line:
All i can say is anyone one of you idiots that expect this bottom of the line, blatently entry level fork to hold up under any sort of agressive riding should be bludgened with a pedal wrench. I had one that came stock on a rockhopper and i used it pretty agressivly (knowing it would eventualy fail). It finaly failed after a couple of years and is now sitting on the floor of my garage. I bought a psylo (another fork i expect to fail eventualy) and my gosh... its an improvement (oh wait i guess thats why it costs $130 more). Oh and dont blame the fork for you going over the bars, blame your bad landing/riding. Keep your front as light as possible and youll never get tossed because the fork ran out of travel.
I guess the bottom line here is, dont expect a fork that can be picked up for $60 to be super durable or ride with the same quality of a $400 fork. The fork does what its supposed to do, its an entry level fork for entry level riders who arnt going to be pushing it real hard.

if you have a jett and are looking to upgrade, this is a good fork to do it with if you're not lookin to break the bank. it handles well at speed although it does exhibit a bit of the pogo effect. basically, compared to the jett, this thing top of the line. the stock setup is a bit soft and i can see bottoming this fork on any sizeable drops. if you're lookin for a cheap freeride fork, look elsewhere because you'll ruin this fork doing that. if you're not weight crazy, not rich, but like cross country riding - this is the fork for you. i like to see a better sag adjustment on it, and firmer springs - but for the price those points do take away from performance or value. buy with confidence.

I haven't noticed any flex in the fork (yet). And to you other people who do drops on it and say that it breaks...its not meant for that so don't do any drops ok?? its meant for cross country. if you wanna do drops, buy a marzocchi. I agree that this is a good entry level fork for flatter cross-country trails, and I was just starting MTB riding when I got it. Unfortunately the trails we have here are very technical with steep drops, deep clay ruts, and exposed roots everywhere. Even as a beginner this fork was dissapointing because it couldn't handle the difficult terrain. It seems to have a mind of its own on ruts and flexed so much that you can actually notice the front tyre momentarily pointing somewhere else from your handle bar specially over exposed roots. I later tried a Magnum R with the dampening which didn't pogo but the flex was just as bad, must be the small diameter tubes. Replaced it with a Judy XC, problem solved.

Weaknesses:
Well, the things that everyone says below are somewhat true, but come on, we're talking about an entry level fork here. People are complaining because it's bottoming out on a 3 foot drop-off? You need a 45 pound freeride bike with 5 or 6" of travel to do that on a regular basis. Where I come from we keep our wheels on the ground 98% of the time and go fast for long distances. Buy the appropriate product for what you are doing. If you are just going to ride around and jump off loading docks and picnic tables, this is not the product for you.

Bottom Line:
First, lots of people below complained that this fork leaks oil. Uhhh, sorry, but that's impossible. There is no oil in this fork. What you saw was the grease inside that had broken down and come out from the top seal. It's completely harmless (if you'd read the owner's manual, you'd know this). Also, everyone is complaining about the fork bottoming out or not working for heavier riders. The reason for this is because the fork comes stock set up for 165 pound riders (just about like every other fork on the market). If you want the fork to feel good for your weight or riding style you really need to get the appropriate elastomer for it from Manitou (you can buy them online from Manitou or from your local bike shop). Here are the colors and weight ratings:
Green 195
This fork is on my girlfriend's DB Topanga Comp, and it has served her very well.
This isn't a Rock Shox Psylo or a Manitou Black, but it does what it's supposed to do for the money very, very well. You'll only be dissapointed if you don't have it tuned right or you're using it for a purpose that it wasn't intended for.

the crown came down and hit the tire, yhad 85mm of travel when i was suppose to have 76mm??????
this fork rocks and was well worth the grand. the only thing that sux is at northshore the teeter totter was broken, it wouldn't go down so I had to drop off of it, my neck got slit with fishing line, and i fliipped over into a boobie trap:(

Bottom Line:
this is a good fork for someone who is just getting started in mountain bikeing, It works for a lot of bumps but the spring rate is very flat so it's not very progressive(due to having no rebound or compression damping). I have recently been getting into some higher drop offs(3-6.5 feet) and i bottom it out constantly. it feels a lot like a pogo stick due to the fact that it's non-damped. I'll probobly be getting a RS Psylo soon. It is however a lot better than the RS JETT. it's also very flexy. if you are serious about mountain biking you might wanna get a different better fork. but however if you just getting started in mountain biking this is great, especially if you don't do too many drop offs of jumps, it's great.I did once however Snap the spring in half landing a jump, and i also stripped the compression rod threads and had to borrow a bike for my very first race ever. hey, at least you don't have top worry about setting up the damping or about high speed compression lockup.

Bottom Line:
This may be a road fork but not a xc, freeride or dh fork. On my old bike (giant atx 860), it come stock on this bike, and after one month of riding, the fork start to be loose. In winter, the pogo freeze so the fork travel of 10 mm. If you have v-brakes, you may put an brake booster because it have a flex, this will make your brake more powerful. In muddy conditions, sand go under the boots, that's make the rebound slower and used the upper tube too fast. This fork is so cheap that it don't have an rebound adjuster. It bottom out to easilly. It have an disc mount but who will put an disc brake on this fork??? If you want to have a better fork goes whit RockShox's or Marzocchi's. There you'll have fun to ride your bike in every condition

They came with the bike. For the first thee months or so I thought I had the best forks in the world (I was fairly new to full suspension bikes). Then I went to Moab with some friends who have been biking quite a bit longer than I and learned a few things. 1) My forks were plush, but bottomed easily. 2) cranking the preload adjustment down all the way helped but not quite enought for my weight (about 215 lbs). 3) as riding level increases the need for higher end forks also increases.
Therefore, as soon as my tax refund comes back, I will be upgrading to X-Vert or X-Vert Super forks. More travel, more adjustability, more advanced riding style.
If these forks came on your bike then ride them until you know you need an upgrade. If that time never comes then this set of forks fits you.
I give them a 4 straight across. They do what they were intened to do. If your riding style goes beyond that, then get a fork that matches your style... Enjoy...

I thought this was to be just a P.O.S. fork that i would use 'till i got my Judy. It turns out that this fork performed very smoothly and was quite plush(if that's your thing). Anyway, it performed a hell of alot better than any other entry level fork i have come across. There wasn't much stiction and i didn't bottom it out. I assume this is because I weigh a sweet 130lbs., which I figure is just about right for this fork. And for the price I paid, (my friend gave it to me for free) it had all the performance i could ever ask for. Not the perfect or best fork by any means, but definitely trail worthy and better than any entry level RST or RS!

I am looking at upgrading the springs to the yellow ones which are the stiffest to see if that helps my pogoing any. This is the best fork attached to any of the bikes in the Tassajara's price range. It is perfect for the weekend warrior, but I would probably upgrade for racing to something that has a little more travel, a bit stiffer, and little bit lighter. The compression adjustment is worthless, but in all fairness, any fork with an elastomitor setup is going to have the same problems. I question the claimed 76mm of travel. The actual useable is considerably less especially if you really crank down the setting screw. I have about 20 miles on this fork which came stock on by bike it's not much on sensativity but it's reliable. I immediately wanted to move up to an oil damp or air blatter fork. Nothing fancy about the fork, good for beginner or intermediate rider.

Very nice shock. Good weight, and matches my bike perfectly.
Weaknesses:
none that i can find
Bottom Line:
This shock is possibly the best I've tried in a long time. If you want a fairly lightweight shock that won't break on you, this is the one.

piece of schitt. if you're looking for a fork to do any serious amount of riding on than this might be for you provided you weigh less than a twinkie. This was the fork that was originally spec'd on my bike and I knew I was going to have to replace it sooner or later, then sooner reared it's ugly head. This fork is too heavy, and broke on impact off of about a 3ft drop, not big at all. it stopped my forward motion and sent me over the handlbars in a way that just wasn't natural. I even had the stiff ride kit installed. Warranty? Answer wants me to send it back so they can rebuild the damn thing hoping it will work for me! what a crock of hamster poo, if they were a company of value they would value me as a customer and offer to let me pay the difference for a fork upgrade (which I would've been glad to do). Marzocchi on the other hand was all to willing to earn my business, thus, they did. the magnum gets one flaming dead baby because it sucks the big patooty.

The bottome line is that don't use this product for anything other than x-country. If your looking for a fork for just that then it will be fine, but DON'T under any circumstances use it for anything else. It starts bottoming out even on some of the smallest jumps, and oh yeah - it broke on a 4 foot drop off - and I didn't even land it badly. Now I'm stuck with a fork with a broken spring and about 20mm travel - half of which disappears when I sit on the bike.
Anyway, I'm off to buy some bomber Z2s.

Bottom Line:
Despite the fact that this fork has no damping, I still consider it a good fork. This fork compared to the RST Gamma EL does not have as much violent front wheel dive downs. But one thing I dont like about this fork is the steel steerer tube, it's kinda heavy! Another thing I dont like is the preload adjuster, in cold conditions the knob would freeze up, and attempting to twist the knob would result in snapping of the adjuster from the inside, which results in completely killing you preload adjuster.
---------The Bottom Line-------------------
:) Ideal buyer- a beginner mountain biker that needs a decent fork for the money.
:( Non Ideal buyer- Serious XC riders/racers who demand high-performance in a suspension fork.

I can't agree with the other reviewers. The adjustment works great. Just start turning and turning. I usually keep it cranked up for riding through the city. That stops the bob. I turn it way down for off road. I haven't had any problem with rebound or bottoming out. (I weight 165 lbs soaking weight, 72 kg. for you Aussies.) I prefer to wheelie drop drop-offs so, maybe I haven't really tested it. If this shock comes with your bike you lucked out. For a few more bucks check out the air sprung shocks.

This fork makes your ride very very very plush, too plush for XC riding. It absorbs all vibrations and 1 millimetre hole on the road! Good 80 (76.2) mm travel, look good also. light (compared to Judy C)
Weaknesses:
cap adjuster in Y hurt your hand, and you turn for a long time! Water came under the so-so boots to rapidly, making the rebound slower.
For hard XC riding, I would recommand you to change elastomers to a more firm ride if you weight over 200lbs. Compared to Judy, the Magnum absorb water to easily, making that you have to make maintenance more often. Micro-Grease port lube is an easy way to get your fork working good, without disassambling all fork.

They bottom out alot for me on logs and sharp rock hits, but are super plush and smooth (especially for not being broken in yet!) on everything else. If the stiffer elastomer kit makes it not bottom out and is still this smooth and plush..I will be VERY impressed with this $170 fork. My GF's brother is lighter and they don't bottom for him, so I think it's just me being to big. Would have liked to get an AL steerer tube, since the trek 6000 is a little portly.

MAKE SURE IF YOU BUY THIS FORK, whether already on a bike or seperately, you are 140-180 pounds. Otherwise you will need an upgrade kit. How do I know the weight limitations? Well unfortunately I found out the hard way. My shock bottomed out while riding, and the assembly shot out of the top with great force, and hit my neck. I was accused of having a hicky, since it made a rather large welt. The coil cut my arm in the same instance. I really do not understand how an upgrade kit will prevent this from happening again, since the assembly will still take the same amount of force. Manitou has tried to convince me the kit would do me good, yet I am gun shy. If you are interesed in Manitou brand forks, at least do yourself the favor of going with the Twin Piston Chamber models ( I beleive the Magnum R and up are TPC)

Great Fork for the price but I am a pretty serious XC so it is too plush for my taste. If I had the money (something I'm a little short on) I'd buy a Manitou Mars w/ lockout. If you stay in rough stuff this fork will serve you well, as it has me in this terrain, but a majority of my riding is on smoother gravel, fire roads, etc and it is just bobs too much. Hardcore trail riders: this is a good purchase as long as you aren't aspiring to be a downhiller. XC riders: buy something lighter and firmer.
