Favorite Trail:Woodford to Glenbrook
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1000.00
Purchased At:From a friend
Strengths:Lite, low maintenance, very good XC bike, surprisingly robust.
Weaknesses:None that I have found..... Well im happy with my one
Similar Products Used:Mongoose, Cannondale V500
Bike Setup:Stock stantard
Bottom Line:I have owned my Y11 for about eleven years now. At my heavyset I have weighed in at 110 kg, at this weight I have taken my Y11 out and given it many a hard time.
I have owned it for so long now that I don’t even care if I break the frame, but no matter what I do on it, the bike still comes back for more.
I’m very happy with my Y11, if I wasn’t would have replaced it years ago!
There are better bikes out there for down hill and bombing. The Y11 is Probably best suited for racing these daysfor bush bashing XC riders but its Probably to out of date for racing these days.

Date Reviewed: September 7, 2009
Favorite Trail:ISD
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1600.00
Purchased At:McClain Cycle / Cadi
Strengths:Durable stiff light frame. Most all of the other parts have been replaced after years of use.
Weaknesses:Rocshock upgraded to Fox, Front brake upgraded to Avid disc all the LX componets upgraded to XT, Tires upgraded to tubeless Hutchinson Python, Rims / hubs upgraded to Mavic.
Bike Setup:Cross country rides through hard pack single tracks with piles of sand at bottoms of rolling hills. Same geometry was used to replace forks. Fox forks worth the price, Mavic more than double worth the price. Hutchinson Python tires are priceless.
Bottom Line:Original owner of Trek Y11 since 1996. MTB over 2000 miles a year. Would not trade it for a brand new bike since I replaced every thing with exactly what I wanted. Tracks straight downhill on the most washbord downhill runs available at full speed. Still tight as the day I got it.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $2000.00
Purchased At:local bike shop
Strengths:reliability, looks (even after 10 years)
Weaknesses:rear suspension performance when compared to newer designs
Similar Products Used:Trek Top Fuel SL
Bike Setup:XTR shifters derailleurs transmission and v-brakes. Titanium stems and sadle, carbon handlebar, mavic wheels. SID rear shock and fork. All top of the line 10 years ago.
Bottom Line:The truth is that during my last stage race (www.supertravessia.com) my 2007 TopFuel SL gave in to the hardships of the event. Have my friends and my Y11 to thank the 14place overall. Many of the other riders thought I was joking when I lined up with a 10 year old bike. Truth is that it completed half of the race with nothing but some extra air pumped into the shocks.

May well be an outdated design but still compares favourably in terms of weight to current bikes like Specialized Epic, Scott Spark and even some Trek TopFuel versions.

A keeper...

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1500.00
Purchased At:Bike shop
Strengths:Light and comfortable. Doesn't crack like the other Trek carbon frames.
Weaknesses:Well...the pogo problem...but...the Rock Shox MC3.3 Motion Control took care of that.
Similar Products Used:Too many to list.
Bike Setup:Sid World Cup. Spinergy Rev X wheels. Carbon everywhere possible. Custom chameleon paint that changes from green to purple around those so sexy curves.
Bottom Line:Spend the 3 bills on a platform rear shock to curb pogo. Well worth the money. Spend the time and money to put on a trick paint job. You'll have a bike you'll want to screw.

Purchased At:franklin bike shop
Strengths:Light Weight, durable, ahead of its time, still a great bike
Weaknesses:Hard to find parts for, no disc brake mounts.
Similar Products Used:n/a
Bike Setup:Manitou front fork, fox air rear shock, LX components, ritchey 2x9 shifters and a rock ring, atec time peddals
Bottom Line:Great bike to start with and easy to upgrade, very light, even for todays standards, i have thought about getting a new bike, but can't find anything that isn't over 3 grand that is as light as my 9 year old bike. (does that make sense?) I used to race this bike in the 90's and it did amazingly well, i placed in multiple races, not sure how it would stand up to todays races, i have been out of the race scene for 6 years now, but am thinking about trying this year. I want to get a new fork for it but am afraid if i get a 100mm -120mm fork it will throw off the geometry, I also want a lock out rear shock. bottomline i am still in love with this bike as much as the day i bought it and i would never get rid of it even if i got a new bike.

Bottom Line:This Bike kicks ass, all the time. I have not been down for failures and have taken some mean air. Can be a fun slow ride or a mean downhill machine. The looks and comments are also pretty impressive, considering all other bikes look the same now. purple finish without a blemish, just keep it waxed.

Strengths:Plush ride, light, bomb-proof, rides like a Cadillac, long wheel base is very stable. Very adept at climbing and decending except in very extreme circumstances. 25 pounder!
Weaknesses:Stretched-out, low center of gravity causes wide turning radius on tight switchbacks.
Similar Products Used:Fisher Super-Kaliber
Bike Setup:Stock '97 model. Components are finally worn out. Time to reload with new wheelset, XTR, new fork and shock.
Bottom Line:Well traveled bike going on its eight year. Slick Rock, Flume Trail, Cottonwood Canyon, Black Canyon, El Prieto, Ken Burton. Going to drop a grand into rebuild rather than replacing. A classic!

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $2300.00
Purchased At:JAX
Strengths:This is a very light weight bike. It is also a very strong climbing bike. Washes out in the corners slightly. Amazing agility on the downhills. Bike can take a beating.
Weaknesses:The geometery leads to excessive adjustment of the derailleurs. Bottom bolt that holds frame and rear swing arm together can loosen leading to creaking and possible falling out of the frame. I learned to tighten it when noise occurs.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Stump Jumper and GT I-Drive.
Bike Setup:Converted from OEM set-up to: XTR cranks, rear XTR derailleurs, Avid V-Brakes, Rox Shox Psylo Front Shock, Fox Vanilla RC Lock-Out Rear Shock, I Drive Chain, XTR Rear Cassette, MAvic X517 Wheel Set with XTR Hubs by Wheelsmith, Riser Handle Bars, XT Hallow Tech Cranks.
Bottom Line:This bike is the best I have ever had. The rear is soggy when not set up with a lock-out rear shock. It is fun and will definately teach you to ride fast (FUN DOWNHILL!) and on the edge.

I bought it for 600 bucks and went to work on it. Needless to say it rocks. I love the sound resonating off the carbon frame. Frame is indestructable I'm 6'1 225 and I can ride like it's made of steel you just have to take care of it like any other bike. don't abuse it. limited parts though had to have a machine shop weld mount to the dropuot for discs not bad $90. Submitted by Mike Ewing a Cross Country Rider from Chandler, Arizona
Date Reviewed: September 28, 2002
Favorite Trail:South Mountan, Phoenix
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1800.00
Purchased At:Bike Source, Chandler AZ
Strengths:The best climbing full suspension I have ridden and I have ridden everything. It's very light and it has lasted forever with no problems at all except for the rear shock which won't hold preasure after 4 years of hard Arizona year-round riding. The stance on the bike is low to the ground so bucking is rare.
Weaknesses:BOB. I also own a Klein Mantra and after riding the Klein, the BOB is horrible--especially in bumps. It is really hard to keep your feet on the bike unless you are clipped in in rough terrain. I love everything about the bike except for the rear shock and the BOB. It's like a pogo stick. The Trek pretty much does everything better than my Klein Mantra except for the bouncing and the bouncing is so bad that the bike has started to collect dust. It's just unfortunate that the bike can do so many things completely right while doing one thing so bad that I bought a bike renouned for no bob and yet has a very plush ride. The only other problem is that the peddles are very low to the ground so the peddals seem to hit every rock on the trail.
Similar Products Used:Almost every FS bike there is from Cannondale to FSR's to Klein.
Bike Setup:Peddle upgrades, crowbar handlebars, stem riser, lower ratio cartridge (makes it easier to ride uphill through the rocky AZ terrain).
Bottom Line:The best FS bike I have ever ridden except for it's one horrible problem with BOB. I could buy a lockout or simply pump the air shock way up (which I do) but it still bucks like a bronc through the bumps and bobs when peddling. My other choice, the Klein Mantra does a much better job at killing the bob but it has a tendancy to buck on steep downhills and in braking because the bike is to short. With my upgraded cartridge set for a lower gear ratio, the bike climbs like there is no tomorrow and it does an excellent job going downhill. The frame is also noisy and the chain rattles real bad (as all Y bikes do) but removing a link helps. I now almost exclusively ride the Klein because of it's BOB. Too bad that it has such a horrible design flaw.

Date Reviewed: August 9, 2002
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Purchased At:Now defunct bike shop
Strengths:Best looking MTB ever made
Definitely worth the purchase price
Weaknesses:Out of production
Expensive back in the day
Bike Setup:1997 Y-11 (indigo blue), original Fox Vanilla, second bushing set, fourth suspension fork (2001 Marzo Z3 100mm), Hayes disc front
Bottom Line:Used to listen to the critics badmouth this bike - can't climb, it's noisy, bobs like a feeding duck, etc. Well, the bikes those critics were riding back then are scrap, while I ride on and on and on. This bike has seen some serious action over the years - Leadville 100, 24 Hours of Adrenalin solos - and never let me down. The bushings - both the main pivot and the Fox - needed replacement after three seasons when this bike was my main ride. Now that it shares with other bikes, maintenance frequency is even less.

The design never fails to attract attention. Non-bikers stop and comment how good it looks, and I catch people staring and pointing when it goes by on my roof rack. Not one of my other six bikes elicits this kind of response.

In '97, you got a lot less bike for your dollar than today. I hesitated to pop the cash on the Y, but in hindsight, it was a bargain. I'll be riding it indefinately, barring theft or crash damage. The bike outlasted the shop where it was purchased - they closed their doors last summer.

My one regret? Not buying a matching Y66 road bike, in the same color, when they were still available.

Favorite Trail:Hamilton Creek
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $1000.00
Purchased At:EBay
Strengths:Looks - it's a piece of art
Weight - very light (weights a little more than my titanium hardtail)
Weaknesses:It feels higher off the ground and doesn't corner very well (compare to my Litespeed Obed). This might be due to my shocks though.
Similar Products Used:My first full suspension. I've used a Litespeed Obed and Norco Nitro.
Bike Setup:Y-11, 2001 Psylo Race, Cane Creek AD-12, Spinergy Spox, Race Face LP Crank, Shimano 747 pedals, XTR's
Bottom Line:This bike looks really cool. It's pretty light for a FS bike and probably lighter than some non-FS bikes. With the shocks that I have, the ride is very plush. Nothing like flying downhill on a FS bike.

I haven't noticed any bobbing while pedalling or any lost of power when climbing. I think it might be due to my rear shock. The only thing that I noticed with the longer travel (sits higher) of the Psylo Race is that I have less control. Maybe it takes a wile to get used to.

I've ridden this bike for only a couple of times and so far, I'll give it a 2 thumbs up.

I think that this bike is good for 1) showing off how cool your bike looks, 2) having fun running over stuff, 3) having fun flying off stuff, 4) gaining more speed and control going down hill, 5) saves your butt a little (I mean a little cause my butt still hurts :S).

I'd still use my hardtail for racing though. I seem to have more control and speed on my Litespeed Obed.

I'm sure that there are better FS bikes out there but none looks as good as the Trek Y. It's too bad that Trek doesn't make them anymore. They only have those ugly ugly ugly ugly bikes now.

If you can find one and get it at a good deal, grab it.

Strengths:Great for a XC, durable frame, components.
Weaknesses:Great for XC, unfortunately I'm 6'3" and 250lbs, so I prefer to bomb down hills and drop off things. I was always afraid to really beat it and crack the frame, that's why I sold it. It held up though, I'll give it that!
Similar Products Used:First Dual Suspension
Bike Setup:Pretty much stock, except for a riser bar.
Bottom Line:Not much suspension travel here, but some people like that. I never really became comfortable with the carbon fiber frame. I would actually disregard my own safety while crashing to save the bike! I bought a '99 Trek 7000(hardtail) after the Y-11, but sold it a month later. I guess what they say is true....Once you go F/S, you can't go back. If you can get a deal on a Y-11, pick it up. You will be pleased with this bike. You will be the envy of all your friends. Everybody looked at the bike like it had a set of breasts. The bike is just plain sexy. Even if you don't want to ride it, just hang it on the wall. It's not just looks, though. Just throw your leg over a Gaugan, it just won't handle as well as the Y-11.

Strengths:Very lightweight, responsive, good at climbing, pretty good at decents for a x-country full suspension
Weaknesses:Broke frame in 4 months of riding, but have to give Trek mad props I had a new frame in 5 working days, no questions asked, they sure did stand behind the warrenty

Bottom Line:A very good x-country bike, don't follow some of the reviews about the single pivot being out of date, I think they are comparing them to more down hill bikes. The carbon is a little loud, but it makes up for it in the weight of the bike, w/ a 4lb + fork it still weighs in at about 26.5 lb. Favorite Trail:Peak District
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $900.00
Purchased At:Pre-owned
Strengths:Light, strong. Eye-catching Y-frame in electric-blue means its a real head-turner on the streets.
Weaknesses:Bobs a bit when out of the saddle. That nice blue finish with 'Trek' logos has varnish which comes off at the slightest abrasion and takes the logos with it!
Similar Products Used:Much upgraded Saracen Havoc Downhill. Tried other bikes in the shops, but never got on with the long top-tubes - I like a short reach.
Bike Setup:Playbike setup - Rockshox Judy XL up front, XT groupset, Mavic X517 rims, Fox vanilla rear coil-over-oil, 25" XC flat bars
Bottom Line:Only started riding a couple of years ago. Bought a Saracen Havoc as a starter bike, rode it into the ground doing cross-country (hard work with a 35lB bike I'll tell you!) for 18 months, then looked for something better. Picked up the Y11 second-hand for £500, took all the low-quality original kit off the frame, added the XT groupset and Judy forks and I think this bike is absolutely brilliant. Comes in at around 30lb all-up, but I prefer a bike with strong bits rather than light bits!
I was a bit worried about using triple-clamp forks with the OCLV frame, but the rubber bumpers on the forks work just fine.
Bike bobs a bit when pedalling hard out of the seat, but I prefer the simplicity of the single URT pivot system for maintenance - only a single bush to worry about. When I bought the bike it had about 0.5" of travel in all the suspension elements, and creaked a lot. When I stripped it down I found the previous owner had never lubed the main pivot, which was all but locked up solid. Took it to bits, lubed it, and now it's like new - having never actually moved much.
All this stuff about the frame being noisy is so much rubbish - so long as the bike is lubed and looked after, it doesn't make any noise, and if you're going down a rocky slope at 30 mph the last thing you'll be doing is listening for the frame resonating!
Brilliant bike - top marks.

( within reason):) Bike's unusual design gets attention anywhere I go, and people never ask if I bought it at Walmart! My K2 5000 is only used if I'm riding somewhere that is extremely gnarly because it weighs a ton compared to the TREK and doesn't handle nearly as well.
Weaknesses:Friends get mad trying to keep up on rough downhills and crashing like hell :P
Similar Products Used:K2 5000, Cannondale F700
Bike Setup:Fox vanilla shock, all stock components except for fork.

Bottom Line:I have immensely enjoyed this rig. At two years old it still looks and works better than 90% of the newer designs and is very reliable. As for frame resonance, I wonder if dudes below had bad or busted frames cause I sure haven't noticed any. Landing from around three feet of air is completely within this frames capability and it is way plush when setup for your weight. Have no intention of getting rid of this bike anytime soon. I love it.
Only 4 spontaneously combusting baptist ministers for value becaues they were pretty expensive, Overall is five cause this bike handles and rides with the best. I think anyone from beginner to seasoned vet would love this bike assuming you're not catching eight feet of air. If you are you are then you really should look into motocross bikes.

Favorite Trail:My yard--40 acres woods&hills
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1400.00
Purchased At:Bicycles Unlimited, Lompoc,CA
Strengths:Light Carbon chassis, decent components FOR THE TIME,Reasonable cost considering what the chassis must have cost, even to a giant co. like Trek, and of course F/S.
Weaknesses:shock{early vanilla} better damped than fork {Q21R}. Rear suspension has a mild falling rate due to shock angle-- the same mistake yamaha made with early monoshocks.Chassis is loud from resonance.
Similar Products Used:test rode equiv. gary fisher and cannondale at the time. Recently rode an Intense uzzi w/ boxxer and hope brackes --but that is not EVEN similar in costs orfunction.
Bike Setup:mostly stock, levers reversed from motrcycle racing experience, judy dho ft fork w/ eibach springs and risse cartridge.
Bottom Line:My insurance bought this for me after my 89 rigid bike was stolen.msrp was 1600 in 1/96 when this bike was introduced. I ordered it without a test ride because at the time it totally out specced the comp due primarily to the chassis construction. Yes, there are and were better bikes, but not in value at the time. I just put on the dho fork and it is a vast improvement-- stiff, and has travel and damping! The next improvements will be real brakes and a new rear shock. But I still like this bike and feel it is well enough made to justify the upgrades. This bike saved my butt any number of times due to quick steering and F/S --I'm too old and stiff to ride like some do. And, an air shock can defeat the primary failing of a falling rear rate. Also, for all the noise about URT / sweet spots / virtual pivots etc. on rear susp. , this bike climbs real well. bobbing or not, and it's not bad, you won't climb if your wheel doesn't follow the ground. This bike soaks up rear hits downhill pretty damn well.I'm still happy with it after 4+ years.I recommend these bikes which can be had quite reasonbly, to someone who wants a good f/s bike that is good enough to upgrade and who is a moderate rider. I also heartily recommend my local bike shop to anyone near here.Nice people.

Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:Used, from some guy in MA
Strengths:Very lightweight, soaks up bumps like nothing, very good components all around and a great deal if you can find one for cheap.
Weaknesses:None so far.
Similar Products Used:1999 Gary Fisher Big Sur (but that's not really too similar is it?)
Bike Setup:Spinergy ROKS-XE Wheelset, Marzocchi Z-1 BAM fork, Profile riser bars, Tioga 2.3 DH tires...
Bottom Line:A great bike if you can find it at a good price. From what I have rear the URT suspension is outdated by today's standards, but it feels great to me!
I would highly recommend this bike to anyone who can find it.

Favorite Trail:South Mountain Park, Phx. Az.
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:Looks, Handling, Light weight, Soaks up all the trails have to give! Has mounts for disc brakes"-)
Weaknesses:Frame resinates to the sound of the trail. Fox Air Shock while very good is loud even when seviced.
Similar Products Used:1999 Cannondale Supper V 400, and Supper V 500, 1999 Cannondale F-500, 1999 Gary Fisher Joshua 4, 1987 Nishiki Cascade, 1996 Schwin Moab SS.
Bike Setup:Stock!
Bottom Line:This bike is a quick handler. I was going to buy a 1999 Cannondale F-500 hard tale but a guy was selling this 98 Y-11 for $900, he paid $1,800 a year ago. Well I waved $700 around and he took it! What a deal the bike was kept in awesome shape. All of the other FS bikes under $1200 felt so sluggish and slow. This bike bunny hops like a jack rabbit! I road this bike down a long section of log steps and never touched the brakes once! I just had a bike shop pack it up because I'm getting stationed in Korea (Army Aviation), I cant wait to see the kind of trails they have to offer. It's a shame they dont make this style of bike anymore! This is a wonderfull bike, and makes riding fun again!

Happy Trails, Gary Bitters

Bottom Line:Its a great light bike 24.5 lbs for the money no other bike comes close in price or weight. But i dont know where MSRP $1200.00 came from MSRP was $1800.00.I bought mine as a leftover and it costs $1400.00.

Favorite Trail:
GUANA TREK
Duration Product Used:
2 Years
Strengths:
Carbonframe=light and I did not manage to break it yet.
Weaknesses:
rear triangle=aluminium to easy to break(welding and strengthening did fix it). Also not enough
clearance for fat tyres.
Similar Products Used:
Foes Weasel
DBR V-link
Bike Setup:
Bomber Z1
(grouse fork !!)
Fox Alp4
(rear reliable fox air)
Bottom Line:If you want a bike that can stand a decent thrashing get a Y-11.We tried our best to break this bike (it outlived three manitou forks,28DH races, countless crashes and nearly its owner.) Overall a great fun bike that rides well and does withstand the test of time.
If you thinking about geting a secondhand frame check rear triangle for cracks.
(also the plastic frame doubles up as a guitar wicket!)
