Favorite Trail:Clough State Park N.H.
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:S&W Cycles, Concord
Strengths:I have never had any problems with welds or any other rpart of the bike
Weaknesses:NONE
Similar Products Used:NONE
Bike Setup:Single Track
Bottom Line:I have been riding my 950 for as long as I remember. I use to take it to the World Cup Downhills at Mount Snow, Vermont. Riders would often comment on the vintage ridged frame and give kudos on it. I have always used it for single track. Yet had no fears running it down a mountain side trail.

Date Reviewed: November 11, 2007
Favorite Trail:Santa Monica Mountains
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $475.00
Purchased At:new 1992, local bike shop
Strengths:strong frame, chromoly; great forest green color (looks black until sunlight hits it!), Deore LX group. Wonderful Shimano shifters, I don't know why Trek decided to change. An absolute bargain when I bought it new, on sale.
Weaknesses:a little heavy compared to newer bikes, but can't beat up that steel frame!
Similar Products Used:Gary Fisher, Trek 920
Bike Setup:complete Deore LX, no shocks. added bar ends, Panaracer Dart/Smoke tires, pedal straps, and a rear rack... makes one hell of a commuter bike, also fun on trails.
Bottom Line:They'll bury me with this thing. If you can find one on eBay, grab it! Took it in to have it cleaned and lubricated, the shop guys were amazed what great shape it was in. Decided to splurge for a new Serfas saddle. It'll last for ANOTHER fifteen years.

Submitted by Bo a Weekend Warrior from Vienna, Austria
Date Reviewed: August 9, 2007
Favorite Trail:somewhere in the Austrian alps
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $900.00
Purchased At:Powerslide, Germany
Strengths:sturdy bike - unbreakable, fast and reliable
Weaknesses:no shocks - so what?
Similar Products Used:a couple of treks and cannondales before I bought the Trek 950 - none after (except for the occasionally borrowed ones)
Bike Setup:original Deore LX/XT combo - no material changes except for the occasional wear and tear (pedals, wires, brake pads, tires and bevels)
Bottom Line:I have been riding this bike through high school, university (including courier service) and commuting - a total of over 30.000km. The frame is indesctructible and the bike is quick as lightning. It has seen it's share of curbs, stairs and rocks and is still a pleasure to ride. Always planned on buying a nifty high tech bike when this sturdy f*** breaks down - but no chance so far. I guess it will be buried next to me.. Should you get a hold of one: Buy it and keep it!!

Submitted by Fredi a Weekend Warrior from Arlington, VA, USA
Date Reviewed: April 9, 2007
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $700.00
Purchased At:The Bicycle Exchange
Strengths:Good solid frame, good parts.
Weaknesses:None for the price range.
Similar Products Used:Fetish Discipline
Bike Setup:LX crank, Ritchie SPD pedals, XT 8 speed shifters, XT V-brakes, XT dérailleurs (front and rear), Sun Rhino lite rims XTR hubs, Manitou Black Comp 100-120, Race Face Evolve stem, Cane Creek S-2 headset.
Bottom Line:It was a pretty basic bike when I bought it but it was the best that I could afford. Over time I built it up to be a very good bike. The addition of V-brakes, a suspension fork were the biggest.

I think it's a great entry level MTB and even a bit more. I always said that I wouldn't get a new frame till I broke this one but it never broke. I road that bike hard and it kept on going. I even started racing on it.

It's now just used for groceries and other errands.

Submitted by Joe Blough a Weekend Warrior from Gifu, Japan
Date Reviewed: October 26, 2006
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $900.00
Purchased At:Be-Hop Gifu
Strengths:Fast; frame strength; top-notch parts
Weaknesses:Fading paint job (it's ten years old, though); pedal broke within first month; otherwise, nothing
Similar Products Used:Jamis
Bike Setup:New pedals purchased in year one; no material changes to the bike (besides tires, cables, brake pads etc.)
Bottom Line:Strong and fast and versatile. My guess is I've put about 15,000 miles on the bike, mostly on-road. So I haven't exactly been riding the crap out of it, and maybe that is why I haven't had to replace much. Took a new $1200 Jamis (I think the same model costs about $800 in the States) for a ride the other day and thought my 10-year old Trek was the better, faster bike.
This bike still ranks as the best major purchase of my life. If you can get hold of one, buy it.

Date Reviewed: August 15, 2003
Duration Product Used:2 Years
Price Paid: $75.00
Purchased At:used
Strengths:derailers (XT rear, LX front), shifters
Weaknesses:BRAKES don't work well when wet
Bike Setup:Shimano 515 pedals, Roxshox on front w/ 1" (??) travel
Bottom Line:Buy used and cheap (an old 950!) to get in to mtbiking - then you can buy newer when you EARN it. For me, a steal at $75, probably the fewest mech. problems among friends who ride similar (2x/week). Climbs well, okay downhill. Unfortunately envying full susp - though having so much fun, WHY? Maybe just upgrade front shock, though that 1" headset is a pain.

Submitted by Idan Braslavi a from Tel Aviv, Israel
Date Reviewed: June 27, 2003
Favorite Trail:Tel Aviv - Yahud
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $600.00
Purchased At:Ronny Bicycles
Strengths:Steel! Graceful in appearance and handling. No nonsense all arounder. Work horse.
Weaknesses:None. Only thing I can think of is that the frame's finish isn't detailed (like I said-No nonsense).
Similar Products Used:KHS comp, Trek 920 and numerous others.
Bike Setup:Original group-full Shimano LX. Aded-Sella Italia Flite. Wellgo clipless. Richey slakes. Traz x bar ends.
Bottom Line:In the end of the day quality steel is the only way to go. and this triple butted frame will handle any job with class, and no complaints. the rigid fork will out weigh and out steer any suspension. I have these babies for almost four years now, and rode them on light touring, commuting, on and off road, for well over 25,000 km. so they've taken more then their share of beating. I like them even better then the day I bought them. they look great, and ride like a dream. buy the 950 if you are a "real" bicycle rider. don't buy them if you are a rich bicycle connoisseur, or Lance Armstrong. This one's a keeper.

Favorite Trail:Mt. Wilson Toll Road
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:Pasadena Cyclery
Strengths:Tough and reliable product that has seen its share of spills. I use it to trail climb and descend. It is my second mountain bike. I have had it since 1993 and it looks like new. This bike is a great climber on single track trails. The red paint is strong and very chip resistant. The wheels stay in true and I am ready for new tires.
Weaknesses:A little jarring on the fast descent but that is what a stron no suspension bikes is best known for.
Similar Products Used:Specialized Stumpjumper
Bike Setup:Simano SPD pedals, Stay Kool brake shoes, Blackburn rear rack.
Bottom Line:A great oldie but goodie and I will keep it.

Favorite Trail:Rowlett Creek
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $450.00
Purchased At:Newspaper
Strengths:I bought this bike 5 years ago and it has held up considerably well. This buy can take anything you can give it. The frame is steel but it does not feel heavy when riding. I mainly ride on technical trails and this bike has performed great. It climbs fine and goes down just as well.
Weaknesses:The bike did not come with a front suspension fork but that was an easy fix.
Bike Setup:XT Rear Derailleur, LX Front derailleur, LX cranks, LX Rapid-Fire shifters, LX Hubs, Manitous SX fork.
Bottom Line:If your looking for a starter bike and don't know where to start, find one of these and ride it like there is no tomorrow. This bike will go anywhere and the frame can handle all the abuse you can throw at it.

Submitted by Garth a Cross Country Rider from South Africa
Date Reviewed: November 5, 2001
Favorite Trail:any
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $397.00
Strengths:Great frame, STEEL!
Weaknesses:The tomato red-orange colour takes some getting used to.
Similar Products Used:Trek 800 sport, Trek 820, Trek 6500, GT Backwoods, Trek 8000
Bike Setup:1999 TREK 950, 18", Rigid fork, Bontrager Jones tyres, Vuelta rims, LX hubs, derailleurs, shifters, brakes, levers and cassette. HG72 chain, UN52 bottom bracket and Alivio crank (I think I was conned here!), Icon handlebars, stem and seatpost and a selle Italia Onda saddle.
Bottom Line:I was looking for a bike to function as a commuter vehicle. My selection criteria were for the bike to have a solid frame, reasonable component mix but most importantly, I wanted a bike, that would not appear desirable to a thief.
I am a secret STEEL lover (even though my race machine is an S-WORKS FSR-XC!) and when I saw the 950, I knew I had to have it. Unfortunately, it looks beautiful so one of my criteria has not been realised! I still think that because the bike appears so retro, (rigid fork, rim brakes, flat pedals) perhaps it would not be as desirable as an aluminium disk braked SPD'd machine.
Anyway how does it ride? My bike is not heavy, so off-the-mark sprints happen easily and handling through twisty singeltrack is a breeze. It also climbs exceptionally well. It was with significant trepidation that I took the bike down some rocky garden trail, and it handled it well. The rigid fork is reasonably hard on the upper body, but it never gets painful and you never feel that you're losing control. I use this bike to pull my daughter (in a bike trailer) on Sunday morning rides and it handles the pavement and the extra stress with notably well.
I believe rigid mountain bikes make you a better rider. Without the suspension fork or rear shock to help you, you are forced to choose better lines when climbing, better routes when descending quickly and you have to be more in touch with your own balance, limits and the bike itself.
I give it 5 jalapenos for value and 5 for its overall performance.

Bottom Line:This is a top notch bike, it's an Oldie but a Goodie. It is rock solid and is a great starter bike or a good bike to build to your needs. If you can find an old Trek 950, buy it quick. This bike rocks!!!!And gets 5 Flamin' Chilidogs!

Bottom Line:Ive put many miles on this bike and it still works and looks like new. It was a '95 model bought new in '96. Had the worst wreck of my life on it, picked it up straightened the handlebars and rode it home (after I popped my shoulder back in place) other than a tiny chip in paint and small tear on seat it could be mistaken for new. Strengths:This was my first real mountain bike. It was the old lugged steel frame without shocks or shock geometry. It was beautiful forest green and I absolutely loved it. If I could find one today, I would buy it just for the nostalgia of it. The thing was the perfect starter bike, stable, strong, etc...
Weaknesses:none, my memory has glossed over all of them

Favorite Trail:reclaimed strip mine ground @ home
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Strengths:Super strong
Bulletproof
Excellent climber
Nice jumper
Fast
Weaknesses:Maybe a tad heavy
Similar Products Used:Other than friends bikes, None....Haven't had to :)
Bike Setup:Pretty much all stock...LX/XT fr.& rear der., LX crankset, shifters, and brakes (cantilever)
Bottom Line:Mine is a '93 model. I have had absolutely no problems.
The bike is way strong, yet forgiving too. More flex than aluminum. It climbs up these loose rocky hills great (as long as my legs hold out!). And the descents are even more fun. I can't tell you how much I love this bike!
I have ridden the crap out of this bike, and it just keeps coming back for more. I have wrecked, flipped, endo'ed, and crashed (it's even thrown me off and jumped on me a couple of times, too) but it is none the worse for wear. The trails around here are rough and rocky, yet the bike has held up Excellent.... many other bikes would have fallen apart by now.
I have just bought another, newer bike (wanted a lighter one -w- suspension), but there is no way I'm getting rid of this one! I'll probably upgrade a little at a time.
I can't recommend this bike enough if you are looking for a solid, bullet-proof ride. If you can find one, GET IT!
You won't be sorry!

Favorite Trail:Dennison Run / Kennerdell,pa
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:Dealer
Strengths:A absolutely bulletproof and compliant frame. As nice riding as many newer bikes. Great climber and excels at twisty singletrack yet pretty stable at high speeds.
Weaknesses:None, other than the cantilever brakes that were typical in 1992.
Similar Products Used:Rode newer bikes owned by friends but glad to get back on Old Failful. This bike has never let me down.
Bike Setup:Have replaced everything except headset. Added v-brakes and worth the money spent. Allsop suspension stem. Ritchey rims, Panaracer Dart & Smoke tires.
Bottom Line:Just bought a new Trek (of course) Fuel 90 (non-disc) and am thinking of throwing riser bars and a suspension seatpost on old faithful and converting her to a semi-comfort / hybrid type. I'll ride her till either she breaks or I do. Best money I ever spent. I would recommend a used one to anyone on a budget looking for a good quality bike.

Date Reviewed: September 6, 2000
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $550.00
Purchased At:Bike Shop in Alexandria, VA years ago
Strengths:Beautiful, bomb-proof frame, quality components for the price, running almost all original parts after 8 years of use (I take care of it, though), excellent paint job (almost good as new), nothing beat a good steel frame.
Weaknesses:I can't think of any. So what if the frame is a little on the heavy side.
Similar Products Used:You name it.
Bike Setup:Mostly stock -- Matrix rims, rigid, LX, Deore DX under bar thumb shifers (awesome -- why did they get rid of these??), Girven Flexstem for commuting, rear rack, CONTI Top Touring Tires, fenders, etc.
Bottom Line:My second favorite bike (next to my 1981 Austro-Daimler Superleicht). Tough as nails. After learning to ride singletrack on this baby, converted it to a full-time commuter about 4 years ago -- about the time I got my Stumpjumper M2 (which is a bit more fun for the dirt). If you find one in good shape -- buy it. Too bad Trek stopped making the 900 series steel MTBs.

Bike Setup:'95 Trek 950 stock at discount in '96; put a '98 RockShox Judy XS fork on in '99; Race Face riser bars in '99
Bottom Line:This is one excellent bike for the money. I have ridden it for 4 years with no problems. The frame is strong and fairly light for a chromoly frame built 5 years ago. It still shifts great and the brakes have had no problems. I put on a Judy XC for and riser bars in '99. I will probably put V Brakes on it eventually b/c I can't stand cantilevers (but that is all they made back then).
I just bought a Rocky Mtn Element Limited Edition Race this year but I definitely am going to keep my Trek around just in case.

Bottom Line:I bought my 950 in '94 and have ridden the crap out of it since. Just this summer I was riding down Porc rim in awe at how much abuse this bike will still put up with. As for adding shocks to the bike (Dom..), I didn't have any trouble with geometry (19), although I had to upgrade headset and stem to accept threadless. It was worth the couple of bucks though.
Like the rest of you all, I just can't seem to justify replacing it. I'll ride it till it crumples underneath my a**. 5 steamy dead robins to the 950.

It was such a good value and has proven to be very durable. I ride pretty hard all the time and the bike has held up perfectly for this first yr. But the bike didn't let me down - it took a HUGE amount of abuse with grace and aplomb. Unlike my ass, neck and shoulders, which hurt like hell.I'm started to get a bit of bike envy, but I know I won't get a dime for this bike if I sell it; so methinks I'm going to throw a shock on it and maybe get another 4 years out of it...
