$500.00 | | Strengths: | durability, flexibility | | Weaknesses: | saddle, tires | | Similar Products Used: | too many to name | | Bike Setup: | panaracer trail blazers on stock rims, p/t tri bars | | Bottom Line: | Bought new in 2000 and haven't looked back after ~4000 km. T990 and others have fallen by the wayside. Admittedly harder ride, since adding panaracers have been usings as road trainer 40 - 60k in more comfort than 5200 road; After years of trail beatings, not sure I could snap it with a jackhammer but still supple enough to feel like bike 2x the cost. won't look back | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$500.00 | | Strengths: | I bought my Trek 6000 new in 2000 because of Trek's reputation for tough bikes. My bike has had no trouble living up to this reputation as it is now running for it's 9th year. | | Weaknesses: | Now that the bike has been abused for nine years on some technical trails, it now needs the whole drivetrain replaced. I just had the rear shifter replaced due to its inability to downshift. Good luck finding anything that will hold up so well for so long with my kind of abuse. The stock Manitou Magnum does not have damping which is a shame, but acceptable at the price point. | | Similar Products Used: | Mongoose D50i (rat bike), only lasted three months with broken bottom bracket, cassette, and suspension. | | Bike Setup: | Stock except Specialized grips, Specialized BG saddle, Panaracer tires, Kool Stop brake pads, and Shimano SPD pedals | | Bottom Line: | This is a seriously tough bike. Now that the cogs, chain, and freehub are worn, I can upgrade it to nine speed, put an Avid Single Digit 7 on the back (no disc brake bosses), put a decent fork on, and maybe an Avid Juicy up front. I will keep the frame for many years to come! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$680.00 | | Purchased At: | Eddy's Bike Shop | | Strengths: | This bike has low frame geometry for good stand over height, very decent stock components and can take a beating. | | Weaknesses: | The bike is a tad heavy with the weight a hair toward the front instead of under you. | | Similar Products Used: | Kona Cinder Cone, Specialized Rockhopper, Fisher Opie | | Bike Setup: | Mostly stock but for freeride stem and k-rads. | | Bottom Line: | This is an awesome bike for the price. I am riding the 2008 model. I paid $680 during a sale and have had no problems with the component setup after three months of fairly hard riding, including slamming the rear derailleur on steps and rocks over and over. The Ranger rims and avid disc brakes are like butter. Not a difficult bike to convert into a freeride bike with it's low geometry, especially if you go a size down like I did (15" frame). Some would disagree with me, I'm sure. Go for it! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I got it for free and i don't know what year it is (I'm guessing 1997). Anyhow, it blew my M-40 (2003) out of the water. If you can get your hands on a good bike of this model, I highly reccomend you do so, as it holds up and feels great (and doesn't cost $2000). And a few other similar bikes. | | Bike Setup: | Stock frame, Manitou forks, LX front and rear derailer, sunrims and LX hubs front and back, Club Roost DH bars, DH stem, new levers and shifters, new crank, on 3rd need 4th chain, Serface tires, bunch of other crap. | | Bottom Line: | If your looking for a bike to trek around on on cross county trails then this is a good choice of a bike. Ive had this bike for years and it has stood up to everything ive given it (bear in mind i had no perception of my own mortality until recently, so this bike was assuicidal as i was). The recent changes were due to poor storage after i moved houses. I had no place to keep it, no time to ride and no olace to ride. It was, sadly, neglected. But i recently repented and bought it all new everything, as a peace offering. I could have bought a new bike, but why would i do that. This baby is tougher than i am, has a strange bond with me, been through more bush, trail, dropoffs, singletrac, downhills, and jumps than the lewis and clark expedition. Trek is the singke most reliable bike money can buy (although i am fond of Kona) If i were you id buy a trek. And if i were to buy a trek, id buy the trek 6000 or higher.
ps dont be fooled by the dumbassess out there, hardtails ar nice bikes, no need to buy a dual suspension unless you wanna show off your bike to your freinds, or your into downhill. Hard tails are reliable and do not gaurentee an uncomfortable, bumpy ride. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The 6000 was my first mountain bike. I bought it off the floor and liked it from day 1. The derailleurs aways need tweaking, especially the front. I have put on 2,500 miles in 2 years and haven't replaced a thing except tires. I usually do 30 to 50 miles on hardpacked trails. (not that the old one was bad). It took a while adjusting from a steel frame to an aluminum but this bike can tear up some hills and is tight in downhill switchbacks. This bike is definitely designed for a rider who is fairly serious about his ride but for whatever reason not into shelling out thousands of bucks. So far I've remained at around $500 in upgrades shopping around carefully !!! The base Trek 6000 I must mention is a very nice machine and well worth the money as compared to other bakes in it's price range. I noticed slippage in slow uphill low gear shifting, will adjust. I like the shape of the frame, and I feel in control both on jumps and XC.I tried loads of friends bikes but I still prefer the feel of mine. Two colours were available, the garish orange which would have attracted just a bit too much attention, or the minimal blue which I plumped for. I still love the look of the bike now, and with a bit of TLC I have only had a few small problems after 6months of use. The rims are now rather un-trued and as is to be expected after many falls, there are plenty of scratches on the frame. Cable rub was removing paint on the head post, so small pieces of white tape were attached to stop the problem escalating. An annoying clicking noise coming from the pedals/bb/cranks developed after a few months. First my bike dealer replaced the pedals free of charge and then it continued so recently I removed the cranks, throughly cleaned them and reattached them. The clicking is only very occasional now. It's been great fun getting into proper mountain biking for the first time, on this my first 'proper' bike, but now I've developed to the satge where I would appreciate more travel at the front. Have you seen the colours of the 2000 models!!?? Hmmmm brown! Anyway, its got a much better fork, as well as a slightly better spec. So if anyone fancies stealing mine, I'll claim on the insurance and definately either get a new 6000 or maybe a 6500. All in all a Great Bike. | Overall Rating: |

I have a '97 Trek 6000 SHX, which I purchased on clearout last January for the amazingly low price of $420!!! ($600 Canadian). I was thrilled by my purchase, as my previous ride was a $200 Raleigh. When I started riding the bike in March, I was impressed. Stiff frame, light weight, great handling, and I bought the thing for $140 U.S. below list price! Then things started going wrong. First, I tacoed the rear Weinmann rim. Then, the fork became iron-stiff. Later, as the year went on, one of the grip shift shifters cracked. The climax was at a provincial race in mid-August. First, a crank bolt had gone loose and my inner ring was wrecked. During the race, my crankarm hit a rock and bent the spider. Shortly after, without even hitting anything, the right shifter cracked along the side, leaving me to limp to the finish with a wrecked crank and poor shifting. In all fairness, I do ride an awful lot, at least three times a week, and I do question my Trek dealer a bit. Also, a lot of the work I've done on my bike has been in the upgrade category, and my Trek currently has a nicer crank, a bombproof back rim and weighs in below 26 lbs. But I've spent a total of around $900 U.S. on a bike that originally cost below half of that. Had I known that I would have ridden the thing so much, and that the bike would have required so many upgrades, I would've spent much more. | Overall Rating: |

I've had my 97 Trek 6000zx for about 4 months. I picked it up for $325. I've only made one upgrade, adding ICON clipless pedals. The bike is great, but I have recently run into problems with the drivetrain. It runs gripshift with shimano alivio fr/rr der and a sugino crankset. The problem is the drivetrain shifts on its own, which becomes very annoying when trying to select the right gear for climbs. It has become such a problem that I can't even ride on road due to phantom shifting. I have already had to replace the 2nd chain ring because it has bent. I am not sure if its the crankset or the derailleurs. My only option is to change out the entire drivetrain (cranks,fr/rr der, shifters etc.) or get another bike. It would probably cost about $300 to get they set up I want. Other than that the bike works fine and the frame is a good to upgrade. I would recommend this bike to anyone. I give it 4 stars due to the drivetrain. | Overall Rating: |

I have already changed the pedals to clipless. Also, I have upgraded the brake levers to Shimano LX. The original levers were too shaky. I have also ordered a suspension seatpost for the bike. Believe me, the ride is much better eith the suspension seatpost. Other components that I think should be upgraded: Crankset, Saddle, brakes. I started mountain biking about 4 months ago. The winters in Cape Town are wet and apart from enjoying the good winter swell, one tends to get a big pigish on the beers. I needed some extra exercise, so got myself a bike. My price range was about R3000 ($500). I mainly looked at the Giant and the Trek bikes as they seemed to be a good deal. All i wanted was a simple offroad bike to enjoy a bit of fun in the mountains. A front shock was obviously important. Since then there has been no turning back!!!!! The Trek 6000 is great. There is nothing you can't do on this bike. It's light, the gears work well and the breaking system is fairly sharp. The only downfall is the Indy S shock. There is not enough play in it and it keeps bottoming out. I've replaced it with a RST Mozo TL which makes all the difference. From wanting the bike to do a bit of offroad riding and now changing to racing downhill tracks 4 times a week can only be proof that the Trek 6000 can match any condition. A great bike - put on a better fork!!!

But I think that this bike has an incredibly shity paint job. The paint on my bike practicly flakes off and my chain won't stay on worth a dam. I have took it to numerous bike stors and they claim to fix it but after a few hours of riding the bike it falls off when I go UP a hill. This bike has a desent shox but the only problem is with 48 mm of travel you are constantly bottoming out. I picked up a TREK 6000zx last summer for about $730. It has a super light aluminum frame and that is why I bought it. I swapped a number of components from my old race rig and thought I made a nice new ride. However I should have replaced the cranks as well as they are total crap. They are sugino's with only 5 bolts holding on the steel rings. The problem is the rings are too soft and burr up and bend too easily and the resulting chain suck is enough to ruin the frame. I removed these rings and am considering making a coat rack out of them for I do not wish them upon anyone. So if you ditch the cheap cranks and maybe the cheap seat post you could ride this bike. I do like the weight of the frame and for the price it is worth it. | Overall Rating: |

the trek 6000 is a really great bike. i had a mongoose a60 which had better components on it but the trek totally destroys it! it's a faster smoother bike plus it's pretty durable on and off road. it's really a great buy considering i got it for 400 smacks. much love to my girlfriend (andrea) for driving me to all those bike shops! :) | Overall Rating: |

I got a '97 Trek 6000 SHX a few months ago and I've REALLY been ridding this thing. It's performed great and handled like a dream. I rely on my bike like it's my car. It's my means of transportation and fun. My only problem is that lately my bottom bracket has been making this weird metal clicking sound, but that's gonna get checked out soon. And if you're gonna be riding real tough, I recommend getting stronger rims. I was amazed to get a quality aluminum front suspension bike for $430. Even with 48mm of travel on the Quadra 5 suspension fork, it doesn't slow it's performance on rough trail riding. One thing that I love about the bike, is that it can upgrade to be a real professional bike easily. It's a bike that you can really build on. The newer model of the 6000 has even better components, but I'm not sure of the current street price for it. Overall, Trek makes great quality bikes that many people can afford. If you're looking to buy a new bike, I definitely recommend a Trek. | Overall Rating: |

I bought this bike not too long ago for my birthday and the worst problem I had on it was having to change into a rear under the seat bag for my double water bottles. I ride in everything from snow to mud on that bike, the seals are awesome and it has kept going past many other bikes on hard trails. The shifter on the front didn't like to downshift til I put it through some White Lightning but now it does perfect, and I can't tell much of a difference on the half pound more that the new frame has. As far as I'm concerned it makes it stronger. The gearing is extremely tall when it needs to be and short enough for me to climb 70 degree angle cliffs with. The only upgrade I see is some bar-ends and maybe longer shocks in the future. COmpared to the old style Indy S class shocks though, these new Indy S shox have much more bounce back power and don't bottom out as bad. Just keep them adjusted and you can ride with no problems as I have. | Overall Rating: |

I HAVE HAD MY BIKE FOR A MONTH AND IT IS ONE OF THE BEST BIKES THAT I HAVE RIDEN. I CAN RIDE BETTER THAN PEOPLE WITH BIKE THREE TIMES AS GOOD AS MINE. IT HANDLES WELL AND IS BUILT WELL. IT STANDS UP TO EVERTHING CONSEDERING THAT I RIDE IT EVERY DAY AND HIT JUMPS WITH IT, I LOVE IT AND WOULD RECOMEND TO ANYONE TO BUT IT. BUT I WOULD UP GRADE TO ROCK SHOX JUDYS AND GET CLIPLESS PEDALS. | Overall Rating: |

I'm a guy who never rode much but after training for a marathon last year decided I need a more enjoyable way to get my physical training in. I looked at many different models when I was choosing last fall and had the following criteria; no more than $400, aluminum frame and front suspended bike. I made it known that I had no real experience mountain biking but being in the Marine Corps I intended to push it pretty hard. I have ridden it quite hard in the last 7 months, in every type of terrain. The bike handles very well with one minor problem which is probably specific to my bike. The rear sprockets skip a bit when pushing hard uphill. I have had my dealer (Old Towne Bikes in Fredricksburg VA) look at it several times and they are serious about pleasing the customer. I will be taking it back again to see about replacing the rear sprockets shortly. Overall a great ride for beginners especially for the price. The shock is low end, but only weighing 150 it performs adequately. Much more weight though and I would upgrade it. You definitely have the makings for a great ride if you want to up grade. I haven't questioned my choice of bike yet. | Overall Rating: |

I bought my bike in December 1997 and from the start took it through some rugged areas. I was impressed with it's handling and speed compared to other much more expensive bikes. The only real problem I experienced was that the front chain wheels seem to be a little soft. I bend mine on a easy gravel road. All credit to Trek USA's after sales services they replaced it without any hassels. This is a great beginners bike, well priced. With a few upgrades when you get better will make you unstopable. Buy it! | Overall Rating: |

I bought my '97 Trek 6000 SHX about two months ago, and haven't put many miles on it. It's been fun staring at it in the garage, but I have had it out a little. It has a wonderful frame, waaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy better than the newer, heavier Alpha frames. The specs are, well, alright, with the few following exceptions. The pedals are cheap, the rims are TERRIBLE and the Quadra 5 could probably use a set of speed springs. All of which I'd like to upgrade, IF I COULD CONVINCE MY PARENTS! Oh well. But in pancake-flat Saskatchewan, the light weight and stiffness of this bike are great. I don't intend to rush out and buy the next $4000 fad bike, and this bike is pretty good. With a little work and $500 worth of upgrades, I could probably turn it into a 24-pound race bike. Try to get a '97 because of the lighter weight and the stiffness, but a '98 would suit anyone just fine. | Overall Rating: |

I can only compare this to my previous bike which was a Diamond Back Topango and it really is superb. One problem the front big chain ring seams very soft. Climbing over logs that I have climbed many times on my Diamond Back results in bent rings at the slightest touch. I would like to hear from anyone else experienced this and any suggestions how to overcome it besides the obvious of not hitting the log. | Overall Rating: |

Terrific bike for the money (~$500)! Has handled quite a bit of punishment on some pretty rocky trails. Climbs well and seems very stable on the downhills. The stx rear der. and shifters work suprisingly well, as do the brakes. Beware of the Mythos XC tires-- very prone to pinch flats. Also, the rear rim seems a bit weak (I destroyed it on an errant bunnyhop into a curb!). Indy S shock is better than nothing, but will need upgrading soon. Also, be aware that 6000's Alpha frame is about 1/2 lb. heavier than the Alpha ZX frame on the 6500 and 7000, so if you're looking for a platform to upgrade quickly, the 6500 may be a better buy. Overall, its a good bike for a beginner! | Overall Rating: |

I've had my 6000 for about a month. I live in the northeast and I've taken it through snow, over rocks stumps, roots, streams, you name it I've been in it. This is my first ride and I've put it through some pretty good work outs and it wants more. Great light agile, bike and worth every penny. The Indy S forks will do for starters but I can already see myself upgrading in a year or so, (have to see how everything holds up). The only other thing I would change is the pedals, go clipless. Again I have to see how everything holds up after a good season of hard rides. So far 100 miles no problems. Great starter bike. | Overall Rating: |

I got a trek 6000 and it is a great bike for the money. I gave it full xt and a Z2 shock. It is not as good as all of those big expensive bikes but it is very worth the low cost. I would buy it over any other hardtail. I love my bike and it kicks ass. I love this bike and it rides well. Buy it. | Overall Rating: |

I rode this bike for a while when I first got it and for the money it can't be beat. It was a faster ride than my friend's comparable Raleigh and faster than some other more expensive bikes I've ridden. Had I not wanted full suspension, I may still be riding this bike now. It dosen't have the bset components in the world, but for starters and non-serious people it does the job wonderfully. I took the bike on some NORBA trails as well as others and it held up and preformed quite well.
