Strengths:Lightweight, stiff frame,
superior handling
Similar Products Used:Stumpjumper
Yo Eddy!
Bike Setup:Kona Project2 fork
Syncros post and stem
Suntour xc/pro pedals
Shimano xtr/xt
Bottom Line:I ride my Marin Team for almost 8 years now (38000km) and it is still a joy. The frame is a phenomenon, it´s hard and reacts as it is merely unused... I´ve got no suspension, but a Kona Project2 fork, which suits the frame very well. The ´93 frame is made of Tange´s triple butted Ultimate ultralight, ultrastrong tubing. I still love that bike and got no clue how to replace it, when it´s necessary...
I think of it as a budget version of the old Yo Eddy!

Favorite Trail:
anything with good hard climbs
Duration Product Used:
less than 1 month
Strengths:
Price point(especially with employee purchase) great looks, awesome fork, smooth ride, steel is real!
Weaknesses:
a little heavy (26 lbs stock 17.5) needs longer seatpost, QR seatpost stock, DT shifter cable routing
Similar Products Used:
Kona Mountain Shock (96 Easton elite)
Bike Setup:
great stock tires, would swap seatpost, bar, stem, bar ends, tubes, rim strips, build lighter 28 spoke front wheel
Bottom Line:THe smooth Columbus steel takes me through the bumps faster than my old Easton steed. I finish the day fresher. Climbs well, handles smooth and predictable, but needs to shed a few lbs. I love the adjustability of the manitou fork, although in Michogan the most plush setting is all you need, there are no big hits here.

I have the 1998 Team Marin, and couldn't have bought a better bike for the price, with its quad-butted frame, XTR-XT component mix, and Mavic rims. I would advise putting a little more money into the bike and replace the stock handlebar, stem, and seatpost. Beside that, this is an excellent, light, cross- crountry racer. I couldn't be happier with my steel steed. Now, quit reading and go ride!

I recently purchased the 99 Team Marin and was very much impressed on the overall geometry and design. Handling is great and new 9 speed gear ratio surounded by full up XT componants makes this machine a two thumbs up piece of equipment. It is very light weighing in at 25 lbs along with the new tubular design makes it very strong. I am very happy with my New Team Marin.

Bottom Line:

I owned a Marin Rocky Ridge model for three years which including some extreamly hard riding in Moab which tortures bikes. It was a great deal at $600 on sale. Over the years I eventualy upgraded most of the LX parts to XT or XTR with a Marzocchi shock. The original aluminum frame performend well and took some hard riding (and crashing) until it finally developed a small crack at the rear seat stays. Marin stood by their life time warenty and offered to replace the frame with one of equal or higher value. They evetulaly agreed to give me a huge discount on a team titanium frame. The team issue is the nicest hard tail I have ever riden and is far supperior in ride comfort to any aluminum frame. It is very light (3 llbs) and just seems to love climbing hills and shreding single track. Marin really stands by their product and seems to offer good value for what ever amount you want to spend. Nice folks too.

Bottom Line:

I have been riding a 96' Eldridge grade (same frame as the Team issue) and I find it to be a kick ass ride! I have over the years up graded some of the LX components and slapped on a Ti/BB aswell as a Judy XC. But I wouldn't have sunk so much money in to the thing If I didn't think the frame was worth it, and it is. I find the ride to be very stable and forgiving. It will absorb the big hits while not robbing you of precious pedal power. I do however find it to be a bit lacking in really tight technical stuff, unless its my skill that's a bit lacking. All in all I think It's a fantastic bike for the buck.

i own the team issue. it's a hell of a bike for the price; however, i've noticed that the bike doesn't feel very stable in tricky technical downhill situations. i find that the rearend becomes a little squirelly on loose soil. the xt cranks are nice but continue to loosen up after only an hour or so of riding. i realize this is a shimano thing and not marin. the bike is an overall pleasure to ride, and i've enjoyed my oddessies on it.

I just got done riding a very technical downhill trail with my older palisades trail bike, and I could not be more pleased with its handeling. It took the corners like it was on rails, except on one hair pin turn where I smashed into a tree at 30mph (I'll live). The second time down I used my friends B-17, ohhhhh yahhhh baby, I whent over the water bars like they were'nt their. I am going to buy one now.

Bottom Line:

I purchased my Team Titanium in the fall of '95. It has been a great bike for me ever since. It was difficult giving up my first mountain bike, which was a Paramont (high-end Schwinn). This year I went ahead with a total over haul of the drive-train. I put XTR shifters, V-brakes, levers, and rapid-rise derailleur for the rear. No need for a full suspension, this bike handles like a Porche in all conditions. The only problem I have with the bike is water gathering in the bottom bracket (small vent holes for draining). Marin rep. suggested to drill small holes in the area of the bottom bracket. I have tried everything, but I do not think I am ready to drill into the frame. We just get to much rain in Juneau.

IN MY GARAGE THERE ARE TWO MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE BIKES HANGING UP, COLLECTING DUST. I REALLY LIKE MY TEAM ISSUE ALOT. THE GEOMETRY AND RIDE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS FRAME MAKE IT THE BEST RIDING STEEL HARDTAIL I'VE RIDEN. IT EXCELLS ON TECHNICAL SINGLE TRACK YET IS STABLE AT HIGH SPEEDS, AND ALSO COMFORTABLE ENOUGH TO DO DO AN OFF ROAD CENTURY ON.

I've ridden Marin for 6 years, and I have never ridden a better quality bike. I have ridden in all conditions from snow to almost unberible heat it handles amazingly, because your center of gravity is low and stays close to the bike for excellent control. I strongly recomend this bike for tall people who want to go fast without the fear of washouts.

I have a `96 Palisades Trail, upgraded rear derailleur after my rear hanger broke. Could not contact Marin for a replacement part, wound up that my local Marin shop took weeks to get a replacement, which was a used hanger from Marin.Part had to be filed and reamed to fit. Will always fray my desire for Marin bikes. Though; after bike was sorted out from the bad service from store I purchased it from, performance was quit good. Good frame, nice geometry- I need to contemplate a front shock.

I ride a Pine Mountain. Just installed a SX Ti fork. This has proven to be one of the best all around XC rides i've had the plesure to ride. I would recommend a Pine Mountain to any body thinking about a serious XC bike and not interested in Aluminum.. The parts package is top notch except for the rear hub. LX is not bad stuff but to have a complete bike it needs to be upgraded (I upgradded to the matching White Industries, it comes with a White Industries Tracker front hub). A very similar ride to a Rocky Mountain Hammer. Weight under 24lbs!

I bought this bike originally when I was interested in Cross Country, recently I have started downhilling and this bike, whilst not being full suspension has handled everything I have used if for. I have recently purchased Pace RC36 suspension forks and some stronger wheels and this bike is excellent. The only problem now, is going to be parting with it so that I can purchase a Marin Full Supension bike to enter DH races on.

First mountain bike I got and I LOVE IT !
It is very quick and responsive and the bike, though
not exactly the lightest, is agile and cool! Mine's a

which I upgraded with LX rapid fire plus now. Tange Prestige
Frame.Very nice. Sometimes I wonder if I should have gotten a less
bike so that I can really feel the difference when I upgrade. ;)Anyway, my next bike is a Dean Jester or a Kona Hei Hei .....Stay cool and ride HARD!

'95 Team, bought rigid, recently put a Marzocchi Bomber Z2 on it. Still
only weighs on my scale 25.5lbs with mainly stock equipment except
for a Control Tech Stem and Time ATAC carbons. The ride is fantastic,
light, agile, and handles well. Whisper quiet, unlike my Proflex. the XT
derrailers works great, just the occasional ghost shift in rocky downhills.
The comment I read about the Marin Lite brakes are true, a little difficult
to set up properly but when they are set up, they work great. Ritchie pads
are awesome too.

Bottom Line:

I bought my Team in August of 96' for an excellent price. I was riding a GT Tequesta which I liked a lot but was looking for something with a better spec and quite a bit lighter. I rode several bikes settling on the Pine Mountain at first but switched my order to the Team at the last minute. No regrets. The excellent mix of XT and White Ind. drive train, White Tracker front hub, and Mavic 217s make for a pretty sweet spec. The Marin Lite stuff including the tires seems to be adequate at the very least and the brakes do a good job of slowing me down regardless of where I am or how fast I am going. Not V-brakes by any stretch but confidence inspiring regardless. The only beef I have is the Dia-Tech headset which I seem to have a difficult time getting to stay tight. The ride is great. It accelerates well, climbs nimbly, and tracks very well. I swapped a Judy XC from my GT to help with some of the rougher stuff. Low speed handling in tight single track is exceptional. Overall, I am very pleased. I will probably change the headset and definitely replace the X-Rays with Rapidfire but those are minor nits compared to how the bike rides overall.

Bottom Line:

I've been riding my team Marin for just on a year
and it's still a joy to ride. Somethings loose thier
'gloss' with time but not the Marin. It's best in windy
fast singletrack, rough or smooth, and tracks superbly
when you NEED to... I fitted a Judy XC at purchase
and on one ride spent some time swapping back and forth
between the Marin and a Titanium framed bike, another
manufacturer. While the comfy Ti ride was there the response
of the Marin wasn't. At the end of the day I felt much happier
on the Marin. The only upgrade I intend is a set of V brakes, at
90 Kg the Marin Lite brakes struggle to cope with my expectations.
If your looking for a quality bike that handles superbly and
continues to inspire you to ride it take a look at the Team Marin.
