Strengths:    Well I bought my Rockhopper in '93 and I've been riding it regularly ever since. I you wanna get into MTBing for little money then this is one way to go.

The only part of the orginal bike I am still running is the frame - and this is the real strength of the bike. Everyting that came with the bike either broke, wore out, or was too heavy. On my model the groupset was Shimano Altus (similat to Alvio) - basicly a no frills groupset plus strong but cheap seatpost, bars etc.

Now I run mostly XT/LX, and fairly high spec bit all round. This has made one awesome MTB - a quality steel frame, that handles really well.

Weaknesses:    Original Parts.

Bottom Line:
GOOD FRAME - will last.

Strengths:    Lifetime frame warranty, great XC geometry

Weaknesses:    Gripshift (a personal thing), entry level components: 7spd cassette, RockShox Indy C.

Bottom Line:
A good beginner/intermediate XC bike mainly due to the high quality frame. The welds are even and clean. The tight angles make it a joy in the twisty singletrack. I took it everywhere from Colorado downhills to Slickrock to So Cal granite-laced fire roads. The tires wore out and had to replace a brake cable and shoes or two, but it never let me down. It's light enough for those hike-a-bike sections, so upgrading to beefier components will still yield a responsive package. I've since graduated to full suspension freeriding but there are days when I take her out and sprint up hills.

Bottom Line:

I have had my Rockhopper for two weeks now and no complaints. It is a great value with a STX-RC drivetrain and an Indy C fork. The color (mine is a weird yellow-green color) has to grow on you. I have taken the bike on three hard trail rides already and it has performed near perfect. I will upgrade the coponents along and along, but it is perfectly suited for beginning to intermediate rider wanting to get some off-road experience. My only complaint is the seat is really hard at first but then you get used to it. 5 bloody wrecked bikers all the way.
