see review | | Bottom Line: | Although this bike is available as a frameset only, I will review the total set-up. It is important to understand I am a cross country rider who occasionally downhills ski resorts and commonly trail rides. Also, I'am a 160lb crash conscious rider who plans to survive a trail rather than risk serious injury. I firmly believe that this is an impartial and reliable review to those who match these traits. Frame-The Seven Sola Ti is best described as poetic. It is both compliant and stiff where it should be. Welds are perfect and my components almost install themselves. This is the Ti to buy. Tubesets can be customized to suit rider preference and meeting the people who built my bike was sweet. Five peppers.Fork-The Judy SL with Air Englund air cartridges is light and with adjustability that is really noticable. Too easy to adjust and especially maintain. Some flexyness but acceptable for a lightweight class fork. Decals lack the cool factor. Air cartr improved over old design resist leaking and have no stiction. Four peppers.Wheelset-Mavic Crossmax look cool and perform well. Large brk surface makes pad adjust easy and rim design allows effortless tire mount/dismounting without tools. Ceramic coating can chip easily but rim is tough to warp. Braking power is excellent and hubs are extremely efficient. Price is steep so it doesn't truly represent the performance ability of the wheel. Four peppers.Tires/Tubes-Specialized dirt control/master team edit and Panaracer Greenlites are as light as they come. The tires hook up well and have a very low rolling resistence. The tubes retain air well and the gold presta valves add a nice finish touch. Five peppers for both.Shifter-lever combo/Deraillures/Cassette-Shimano XTR works well in all conditions and is relatively light. Levers have solid feel and adjustable leverage does work. Shifters provide fast, accurate, and reliable shifts. Deraillures are light and mud resistent simple. 11-30 Ti cassette works well with a 22/32/42 ring spread. I don't like Shimano but still must give five peppers to all.Stem/Seatpost/Crankset/Rings/BB-Race Face all the way. Not the lightest but look cool and are very dependable. Stem holds tight both steerer and bar. XY seatpost also cool, strong, and tilt can be adjusted without affecting fore/aft position-conveinent. New carbon/alum crankset is on order but should prove to be awesome. BB is smooth and creak free. Five peppers all.Handlebar/Grips-The Easton CT2 carbon bar is light, stiff, and very shock absorbent. Bar is suceptable to common carbon product probs but is better than most and is suprisingly inexpensive. Grips are ODI lock jaws w/ruffian design and do not slip or spin. Grips are able to be removed in seconds via an allen key-a design that really works. Five peppers both.Saddle-SDG Ventura Ti is comfortable and durable. Long rails provide ample room for adjustment. Not overly fond of the plastic like feel of the covering but pattern helps against sliding. Reasonably light. Four peppers.Brakes-Presicion Billet Super V's are truly super. Brainless to adjust and maintain. Max cool factor due to machining and colors available. Don't stop as well as XTR but easier to adjust and maintain. Five peppers. Cables-Avid Flak Jacket cables are slick and cool looking. Teflon cables move smooth and resist fraying when tightened. The red inner cable sleeves crimp easy and look crappy so take them off. The outer housing has a woven look that is very cool. Performance is uneffected in muddy conditions. Five peppers.Headset-King threadless headsets need no review, they are the best. Smooth and reliable. Five peppers.Pedals-WTB Stealth carbon clipless pedals are the lightest SPD compatible design. Body is relatively impact resistent. They are smooth and consistent with better mud performance than a 747. Buy them for weight not revolutionary performance. Five peppers.Overall-Nothing beats a custom bike with the parts on it that you want. Ride is tuned to your exact need and the bike actually has a personality. At a light 20.9 lbs, it can be ridden all day. At a dependable 20.9 lbs, it can be ridden day after day. Any bike is good if it matches your needs, but for obsessed mountain bikers, go custom and look into Seven. | | Overall Rating: |
