Submitted by Jostein Fossbakk a Cross Country Rider from Tromsø, Norway
Date Reviewed: November 24, 2007
Favorite Trail:Curvy singeltrack anywhere
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Strengths:This review is for the Scott comp racing with the Tange 696 LiteFlite tubing. (steelframe). It is light, very quick and responsive, but still rides smooth. A very nice and light steelframe.
Weaknesses:No Disctabs (on this bike I would´nt want any), Can rust if scratches are not taken care of. The geometry is originally suited for a short travel fork (60-70 mm)I use a 80 mm SID and it is no problem, it only rides better on the descents, but is still very quickturning.
Similar Products Used:Lots of alubikes, and I own a Bridgestone MB2.
Bike Setup:Have built up this bike from just the frame: SID fork, xtr/517 wheels, Scott scale stem, Kalloy uno seatpost (26.2 mm is hard to find). Sram rocket shorty shifters, xtr derr., Wtb rocket w stealth saddle, Control-tech handlebar. Shimano hollowtech crank. Hutchinson python air light/ Continental twister supersonic (depending on the terrain i am riding)
Bottom Line:This frame has amased me with its riding qualities. I got it as a gift from a friend, and suspected it to ride very well based on the kind of tubing used, its weight, and the geometry. All my expectations came true. I have ridden competitions with it that is very rocky and it is built very solid. I love my MB2, but have to (reluctantly)admit that this steelframe is lighter and have a more springy feel to it. I have grat fun with this bike.

Favorite Trail:most...
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1000.00
Strengths:Extremely light, with sorted handling.
Weaknesses:colour scheme (!) needs a few upgrades / component changes
Similar Products Used:Marin, GT, Trek...
Bike Setup:LX / XT drivetrain
LX v brakes
Rockshox Duke SL
Mavix 717 / XT wheels
riser bar, shorter stem
Bottom Line:This bike has the potential to be a fantastic hardtail. It's very light, climbs well, and flows beatifully down singletrack. The original Judy fork was too heavy and too soft, and the bar and stem need to be changed for a shorter stem / riser combo. Do that, and you're on to a winner.

Date Reviewed: November 8, 2002
Favorite Trail:All of 'em
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $620.00
Purchased At:AAFES Sports Store, Germany
Strengths:mostly good Components, fairly light, great geometry, Clear coated Cro-Mo frame looks like Ti.
Weaknesses:Neon colors have gone out of fashion
Similar Products Used:Schwinn PDG-90
Bike Setup:Tange MTB Cro-Moly tubing, Full LX Gruppo, Rapidfire plus shifters had to be replaced due to wearout. Mavic 231 wheels (sweet), Suntour XC Pro pedals with Power Grips, Inmotion HFS saddle, Kalloy Seatpost and stem, Dia-Compe Aheadset, Scott AT-2 bars, Replaced standard SRP-1 rigid fork with '97 Manitou Pro suspension fork.
Bottom Line:My bike is a 1993 model. Not the lightest bike out there, but pretty damn good for a mid-level bike. The higher end Scotts had Tange Prestige tubing. My Schwinn has that tubeset and is too flexy for me (because I am too portly). This bike has held up very well over the years, and is still in great shape, even after some hard get-offs.

Bike Setup:Mixed XT/LX drivetrain, Ringle/Mavic wheelset, Answer/Manitou fork
Bottom Line:This bike kicks! This bike is a great racer. It is made for climbing and fast singletrack. It isn't set up as a great decender but it hasn't stopped me yet.....What is the difference between pink and purple??? YOUR GRIP!! Hang the Hell on and lets haul!! Date Reviewed: March 1, 2001
Favorite Trail:ANYWHERE RIDEABLE
Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $750.00
Purchased At:Fred Baker Cycles, Bristol, UK
Strengths:Fantastic looking bike. Very responsive and quick. Love the Judy SL forks.
Weaknesses:Seat post squeaks. Poor quality rims (ZAC 19). Until I stripped the Judy SL down and upped the travel to 100mm (changing the fork oil while I was at it) they felt very stiff and jumpy.
Similar Products Used:Various hard-tail bikes over the last few years
Bike Setup:Scott Comp Racing Biaxle frame, 2000
LX V-brakes and shifters
XT Rear mech, LX front mech with LX shifters
Judy SL forks, 2000
ZAC 19 rims on LX hubs
LX Chainset
Scott stem, seat post and seat
Club Roost DH Sport bar
Odyssey Blackwidow pedals
Velociraptor Kevlar tyres
Bottom Line:A top rate entry level bike. If your looking for a bike that doesn't need upgrading then stay clear. This bike does!
In particular the rims (already beginning to mark and warp) although i dont think the spec that i got was a standard Scott spec. Also going to upgrade the brakes to Hayes or Hope hydraulic disks when i have the cash. The poor braking performance propably has something to do with the poor quality rims (again!) but with extreme stopping power this bike will be unstopable!

Strengths:
Light, sharp handling, standard kit good for price.
Weaknesses:
Seatpost slips, front shock OK for road but not rough stuff. Squeaky LX brakes.
Bottom Line:Bought it second-hand, 18 months old, for NZ$500 (USS250). Bargain. Terrific controlability, short wheelbase handling, light weight. Not sure about the Gripshift or LX brake pads, but the rest of the drivetrain is top-notch.

Favorite Trail:
Carano, Italy
Duration Product Used:
1 Year
Strengths:
The frame is what basically makes this bike. Light, strong and very well-balanced. The LX-serie does the job too. Personally I was very surprised by the handeling of the T2. An allround very nice suspension fork at a decent price.
Weaknesses:
The brake levers and brakes are not quality on the same level as the rest. Havent had serious truoble, but it could be starting
Bike Setup:
Complete LX, except brakes (Avid), Rock Shox Judy T2, Mavic rims.
Bottom Line:A super bike, at an affordable price. Where is the Scott-hhomepage?

Frame, Brakes, Crankset, Rims
Weaknesses:
Suspension, Pedals, Brake Levers
Bike Setup:
Indy XC, LX Cogset,
LX Front Derailleur,
XT Rear Derailleur,
LX V-Brakes
Bottom Line:I'm 210 lb. The bike flexes a little bit in the biggest bumps but gives comfort and doesn’t brake. My frame has several falls and no problems. Brake boosters are imperative! Also it should have received a stronger suspension (like Judy XC). Scott pedals should not like mud as they do. LX Brake pads and TEKTRO Brake Levers... forget about it! Overall: 3.

Bottom Line:

This summer I took my Scott Comp Racing on a mountainbike Transalp Tour. That means 8 days of really destructing riding across the French Alps: long and very steap climbs, very fast and rocky downhills, high speed crashes and jumps... And I must say my bike did very, very well. Not one time I had any problems with what part so ever of this bike. My friends on the other hand, who drive other bikes (GT LTS, Rider, Jamis) : braking problems, suspension problems, ... So I suppose you could say this bike is really good for its decent price..

Submitted by Ken a cross-country rider from Paris France
Date Reviewed: August 24, 1998
Bottom Line:

I recently purchased the Scott Comp Racing after having long regretted the sale of my last bike (Trek 930). I must say that after the first ride I no longer regret getting rid of my last ride. The Comp Racing is a wonderfully balanced and stable ride with quality components (LX, Avid 1.0 levers, Kore Stem, Judy T2, Mavic, and a very nice and light frame.)For the price ~6500 French Francs (~1000 USD) it is a great bargain - at least in France! Although I still like steel frame bikes, this one at a light 23.5 lbs has converted me to aluminum and will continue to do so the more I ride it. Ride-wise this bike has an aggressive head angle which makes it turn in quickly. The layout is very good and the balance and feel of the bike are near perfect. For cross country and single track work it is the best I have ridden. The Judy can be a bit soft on the standing climbs but otherwise is very smooth and progressive and the dampening kit can be had at around $60 US so this is not a real issue for the moment. Overall I will give it a strong 5 because here in France it is the best value for the money and one of the nicest bikes I have ever ridden. If anyone is considering purchasing a bike in this price range go give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Date Reviewed: July 11, 1998
Bottom Line:

I must say that I do really enjoy my Scott Comp Racing. It came equipped with full LX and an XT rear derailer. The rims are WTB speedmaster rims (a bit heavy and kinda cheap)are just OK. the Indy XC shock is WAY too soft and has no dampening adjustment. I bought the bike in April '98 and I paid $700.05 out the door at a clearance sale!! For that price I could not pass it by. I love the ride of the bike but I would suggest to anyone with the stock Tioga Psycho (grey colored) tires to change them out to a Specialized Team Control or Dirt Control/Master tire for much better rolling speed and a dramatic weight loss. Those stock Psycho tires are terrible. I do like the frame and the geometry of the bike. The Comp Racing handles very well in tight technical terrain and is a great climber. (Or is it just me???) just kidding... I weighed the bike and it comes in at a solid 25.5lbs. Overall i really like the looks and performance of the bike (except the shock) due to the price that I paid (the retail price was approx. $1150.00) I feel that the bike was a great value. By the way, I've ben looking for their website and it doesn't seem to exist. I can't even find information on this bike company. I hope they come back soon!!!

Submitted by Greg Iles a cross-country rider from London, UK
Date Reviewed: July 6, 1998
Bottom Line:

A fantastic bike for the price; decent frame, mavic rims, solid LX group-set and Judy T2 forks. I am suprised I don't see more of them on the trails. My only gripe is with the seat post quick release. It has to be said that it looks cool, but I have doubts about its functionality. My seat was falling towards earth at about 1 inch per 10 miles. I've tried tightening the quick release with an allen key which seems to at least have slowed the descent of my seat, but I am now scared I might strip the aluminium thread every time I change the height of my seat. Maybe I'm just overprotective of my new bike ........... I suppose it is my baby at present !
Alternatively I have the toughest arse on the trails, which is probably the most likely option.Enough rambling ... After that minor gripe I should say it is a beautiful bike to ride. It is light and handles
well despite the fairly heavy T2's. Go and buy one. I assure you that you won't regret it.Greg Iles (Tough Arse)

What do you want to hear about this bike... It's sure worth the price you've got to pay for it (In Holland suggested retail: Hfl 2599). Mostly LX components, nice frame (generaly better equiped than a Trek 7000 for example which is at the same price level). Only the side wall of the front tire (IRC mythos XC) was teared after the 2nd ride but hey, just bad luck I guess. And the ride... Very nice, so 5 hot ones for this great bike!

Bottom Line:

I bought the 96 and it didn't change much last year. I work @ a shop that sells them and I love it. I have LX and I've replaced the Quad21 with a Manitou SX-Ti an it is SWEET. The geometry on this bike is excellent. I'm ordering Mavic 517s with DT 14/15 black spokes-radial lace on SX-Ti side. I just aquired a Easton Elite frame for $200, since the '97 lighter blue color was the last production model us Americans will ever see (I feel violated they left us), but it will prob'ly sit till the Scott breaks. With double butted alluminum there is not a big difference in the weight and the new frame is a Fuji and the geometry and feel is real close. The rain ruined the trails for the next three days that I'm off so guess I'll be a roadie---Just Ride!!!

I got the '98 and it tears s**t up! Super light and good components. The Judy XC feels good on dampening. Shiting is fast and smooth. It's got the Avid single dig 2.0 brakes which I like, but I plan to upgrade to XTR or XT V-brakes. The color is cool and it seems to handle abuse well. It's a fun ride! Too bad they wont be in the States any more.

Date Reviewed: March 5, 1998
Bottom Line:

Great bike, great tubing for the price (Ritchey Logic in 1994), a no nonsense racer. It shines in tight and technical riding due to it's responsive angles and short wheelbase. I have noticed in certain situations a bit of flex but that is mostly due to my size and the forgiving nature of steel. Unfortunately, Scott withdrew from the American market and is no longer offering their line of mountain bikes in the States.

Bottom Line:

Looking through the mags, I found a article advertising a Scott Comp Racing for £660, when they retail at £950.
So I rang up ordered one as I needed a new bike, the bike is kitted out with mostly LX and some XT stuff (rear mech, shifters), mavic 221 rims, sugino impel 500 chainset.
I expected it to come with Avid Speedial 1.9 levers but the bike turned up with the 2.0 spec levers, which are amazing.
I then weighed the beast thinking that it was surprisingly light and found it weighed just 22.1 pounds (10 kgs).
Considing all the kit it comes with I will have to give the bike top marks.
