Weaknesses:Don't buy this bike, it fell apart the second time we used it.
Bottom Line:My son is not a weekend warrior, there was just no place for "needs bike to get to college classes." Bike started falling apart the second time he road it. I am very disappointed. Since the bike was purchased in the spring, when you have to buy a bike, and put aside for college, the receipt has now expired. Actually, it expired on his first day of classes. Target says I can have the bike repaired in their shop but it could be 4-6 weeks and at my expense. How will my son get to classes during that time? So, now I have a 200 dollar bike that doesn't work, has been ridden 2 times, and a son who can't get to classes. I am no longer a target shopper and I will never buy another Schwinn.

Strengths:idk if this is the same bike as the one pictured above but it has the same name and costs 5 timnes less. i was suprised at how tough the frame was just like taking 2 foot drops and small staircases. It looks pretty cool
Weaknesses:its suspension is less than responsive. it makes lots of noises, i guess thats what happens when they loose control of bowels.

Date Reviewed: March 28, 2008
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $1100.00
Purchased At:Somewhere in Santa Cruz, CA, 10 years ago
Strengths:Still going strong after 10 or so years.
Weaknesses:Seems like I'm aiming downhill all the time. Seat is way higher than handlebars due to my height, but I'll get around to fixing that. Holy Hannah that old STX midring is IMPOSSIBLE to find. Bike shops around here have never seen such a thing...a mid ring with TWO sets of mounting holes. No mounts for disc brakes if you want to upgrade.
Bike Setup:Old aftermarket XT V-brakes. Old aftermarket LX front derailleur. Old aftermarket XT shifters and brake levers. Old original back hub/rim. And would you believe the original, ever-crappy Rock Shox Deluxe rear shock? Just added LX RD-M580 rear derailleur, FSA Dynadrive Crankset, and a Wheels #7 dropout.
Bottom Line:Ten years on this thing and I'm still real happy. I think it's a decent frame to upgrade, but I wouldn't buy it today just to upgrade it. I'm happy with V-brakes, 24 speeds, and a small travel URT. I still catch complements on the bike. Newbie riders can't believe it's 10 years old. I want to buy a new bike just for newness-sake, but I really can't justify it.

OK...main reason I'm writing this review is to solicit help. My bike is beat to heck from 10 years of off and on riding. Its been laid down, tossed, gouged, launched, and otherwise abused and its looking shabby.

The red paint is in severe need of touch up in many places, and I can't match it to save my life. Anyone have a good model paint, spray paint, nail polish, whatever match for the red? If you know a source of a good paint match shoot me an email. I'll be forever happy.

Also, any idea where to get decals that mimic the originals? I may get a wild hair and have the front portion of the frame painted bass boat blue like the '99 Homegrown Factory Suspension XT.

Bottom Line:This bike is amazing. I didn't know too much about the bike but assumed I had a "Walmart" bike because of the deal I got on it. The more I rode it the more I fell in love. Suspension is perfect for the durable and great frame design. It carves up the trail either up or down with the best full suspensions today. This bike is a classic and should not be parted with. Keep it and be thankfull if you get your hands on one. Brakes could be upgraded but the V's work relatively good. Disc would really put this bike over the edge!!

Strengths:Solid bike for trail riding.
Weaknesses:Stock parts crap-out after a year.
Similar Products Used:Schwinn S30
Bike Setup:Original parts.
Bottom Line:Great bike for cutting through trails like nobody's buisness. Climbs like a beast and is very easy to handle. The downside is, everything that came with the bike (save the frame) is all crap. You only get a good year's worth of riding out of it before you have to shell-out more money to get it repaired, or replace parts and whatnot. I suggest this bike for the occasional trail rider. It's alright for street-riding too, but sparingly...

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $300.00
Purchased At:Schwinn Dealer
Strengths:beautiful oversize tig welds, classic good looks (There's
something about a schwinn) nice red paint job w/silver rear triangle.
Weaknesses:I purchased mine as a frame and rear shock only, so I can't
say much... bottle bosses could could be better, and the bike seems to "stinkbug" under aggressive front braking.(the rear end lifts) Rear shock is a little difficult to fill.
Similar Products Used:GT-RTS2, Cannondale full susp.

Bottom Line:Built myself from scratch, using both expensive and not-so
expensive parts. This bike has been a dream....has been ex-
cellent as a all round off-roader, and the frame has been absolutely bulletproof. Mine is the older model with the
smaller suspension pivot, and I have yet to wear it out.
As you know this bike is a take-off on the John Castellano

with the Schwinn.

Favorite Trail:Allamuchy, NJ (as of yet)
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $900.00
Purchased At:Cycle Board Sports
Strengths:Durability through simplicity: Simple rear suspension design. Decent weight, if you upgrade. Traditional good looks, little mechanical breakdown.
Weaknesses:Exposed cabling on bottom of down tube. Not generously equipped in stock condition. Not much travel on the back end. Some bob when you crank hard.
Similar Products Used:Schwinn hardtail.
Bike Setup:'02 Duke XC shock. Seat that gives me greater hope in procreating. Mostly stock otherwise.
Bottom Line:If you are reading this, then you are buying a used one. Mine is a '97, I ride mostly rocky trails, good jarring stuff, and the bike has held up wonderfully. The cables on the down tube will piss you off and require attention if you ride in muddy conditions like I encounter. Throw some upgrades on it (please don't stick with the Indy XC fork) and the bike is a keeper. The single pivot rear suspension design is a tank, it's still hasn't bonked out on me, nor is their any play in it. If you don't want to bob, buy a hardtail.

The rear shock could be replaced with a fox air vanilla to make it work very well, and some other good components, then the bike is worth everything you put into it! Stock components are a bit heavy for a XC-oriented bike.

Bottom Line:I have ridden this bike for 3 years now and I can say that it is solid and durable.
Single pivot is great and maintenance-free. Makes a nice freeride bike too.
The S-30 S-20 and S-10 have the exact same frame, so if you can find any of these and want to upgrade it, it would be a smart buy.

Similar Products Used:Jamis Dakar - Full LX components

Bottom Line:Upgrading make a tremendous difference. With quality components, speed and performance increases dramatically. Precision is a bit "shady" due to the weight on the back end, however the climb is excellent due to the weight. You can probably trim a few more pounds by upgrading-lighter rims and lighter Rear Shox(FOX Shox).

Strengths:Solid frame construction (red Carbon), minimal pivots - sweet paint design.
Weaknesses:Creaks a little when worked hard, cable routing invites mud in
Similar Products Used:Rocky Mountain Vapor(my old faithful), tested C'dale V & GT LTS
Bike Setup:Full XT, Psylo XC(new), Race Face Turbine Cranks, Mavic CrossLink wheelset
Bottom Line:The bike rides well, does not mind a climb, really likes going down, takes big hits and drop offs with style, handling in general is very nice, is chunky at 27lb but still a managable cross country ride for F/S. Decision to buy frame based around suspension design which is simple yet effective. Mail ordered frame and customised parts to suit, bike rides brilliantly and seems to show little sign of fatigue. The bike is jack of all and master of no categories which means most will be happy. Frame is a real head turner - as far as I am aware there is only one other in Australia.

Strengths:Price, Climing abiltiy, Fast downhill
Weaknesses:Wheelset, cable routing, sweet spot bushing noisy at times, seat
Bike Setup:Superfly fork with xt components
Bottom Line:I've gotten to know all there is to know about this bike. First, the cable are routed poorly. Mud cakes onto the cables causing friction and wear. Put some ride-on cables on and your fine. Second, upgrade the wheels, especially the rear. Third, the sweetspot bushing wears out after a year and starts to make some noise.

Overall, this is a great bike for the price. A lot of my friends spent more money and got the same results. If you are looking for a fun bike this is it.

Bike Setup:XT rear der./ LX front

Bottom Line:I rode for 15 years all on hardtails. It was risky for me to buy my first bike with front suspension (1997 GT Rebound) for $599. I thought it felt disattached from the street, but then I got used to it and liked it even better because I could go faster downhill and take less shock to the body.
Similarily, when I dispached from the GT Rebound, I found myself stretching outside my comfort zone by buying a full suspension. I finally decided to go with the S-20 carbon because it felt most like a hard tale to me because the crankset was still connected to the rear triangle. What a surprise! It took me no time at all to become completely aclimated to all of the bikes potential.
I could immediately feel the speed difference on my favorite trail. From fast braking and hard turns, this bike sticks to the trail and performes like it should. With this bike I still felt connected to the trail which allowed for completely predictable handling.
The only weakness that the bike had since I've bought it was the rear rim, but that is because of the enormous amount of abuse that I put it through. One instance I clear entire flights of stairs which equivalates to about 6-9 ft. drop. The bike takes the abuse very well. :0) I upgraded the rear rim, and it hasn't since had any problems.
If you're looking for a nice full suspension, but don't want to loose the advantages of a hardtail (ie uphill climbing, feel) then go with the 1999 Schwinn S-20 Carbon fiber. You'll never look back after pipin' down your favorite trail 20% faster. (plus your wallet will be lighter, the bike retailed for $1800)

Bottom Line:I've always had my eye on this bike ever since it first came out.
When I finally got a chance to pick one up used, I jumped on it.
Needless to say, after reading some of the previous testimonies I've decided to upgrade some parts as you can see.
I haven't decided on the rear shock yet but I'm quite sure that it too will be replaced.
A friend of mine that works as a mechanic at a local bike shop tuned and helped me put it together.
I must say that after dialing this baby in the weight is a lot to be desired (could be lighter).
My first ride on my iron pony was last Saturday... All I can say is, why did it take me so long to buy one?????
All this time I've been riding hardtails and I totally am now in heaven.
I've never been so confident and fast coming down a mountain, ever on a bike, before I bought my S-20.
I literally eat up any obstacle in front of me with the ZZYZX fork.
Although, steep inclines tend to be a little more trickier now, bacause the ZZYZX fork is so much taller than the original fork.
I have to be more on top the fork so that my weight will keep the front end from coming up.
Out of the saddle hammering is no problem (no pogoing). Sit down and the ride is plush.
I have not been able to keep my bike parked for very long. When I get home all I want to do is to ride it.
I've been training for about a month now cause my buddies and I are going to Moab for the Fat Tire Festival.
I can't wait to really go all out to see what I can do on this iron pony.

I don't mind the lack of water bottle mounting locations till i'm on a long ride without a camel back. had the bike since Nov. 97, loved every minute of riding it, never had a mechanical failure on the trail. It takes a lickin and keeps on tickin. i got a creak in the sweet spot bearing and took care of it after consulting the LBs about how to go baout fixing it. a friend tried jumping a curb and completely broke the rim, he paid for a new one to say the least.

Bottom Line:I have had my Schwinn S-20 since 3-97 (see earlier post), and was getting the itch for a new bike. After countless test rides and demos (I-Drive, FSR, VRX, Super V...),, I could not find anything I liked better than my S-20. Sure there were rides that were more plush, but they all pogo'ed and zapped power on sprints and uphills to one degree or another. So I took the advice of other post here at this site, and upgraded (I would like to thank everyone who has posted honest reviews and tech tips). I went a little crazy and replaced almost everything but the frame and dropped the weight of my 19 inch from 29.5 to 25.5. But the most important of these had to be THE SHOCKS! I kick myself for not doing this earlier. If you own a Schwinn S-Series, do youself a favor and get the Cane Creek AD-10. It changed the bike totally. The OEM Rock Shox Deluxe had no rebound dampening and would allways kick the back end up. This along with the RS Indy made my bike bouce all over the trail. Once I got the AD-10 and a RST XMO air fork, and messed around with the settings (both compression and rebound) It feels like I have a new bike. It now does everything I want. I can hammer it with no pogo or feedback from the drivetrain, take on all those roots with no kick, climb like a goat, and when seated it feels more plush than most freeride bikes. For the trails we have here (flat) I feel I now have the perfect tool for the way I ride. It fits my ridding style like no other bike could.
As far as (ease of) maitenance goes, when I developed a creak in the main pivot, I got a peice of steel pluming pipe with cap from the hardware store for approx. $2.00 that worked perfect for getting the pivot apart. I cleaned it with a simple SOS pad and DID NOT use any lube (the bushing is impregnated with it). That was a year ago and I have had no stiction or creaks since. Also if you have problems with sticky cables, because of their placement on the downtube, try Avid Flak Jackets (or maby Gores, or staight cable housing). The Avids worked for me.
I agree with the post below, for my age and weight(33yrs, 185lbs) it doesn't get any better than my Schwinn S-20. Five Flaming Chilies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a great bike! My '98 S-20 is 3 months old and has about 1500 miles on it. The URT works well for me, and the undampened T2 suits me. The shifters, headset, and deraillers have performed excellent. I've heard the wheels are the week spot, but I rode 1000+ miles with a trailer and only had to true the rear wheel once. I have run into 3 minor problems. 1)The goofy frame offers no good water bottle mount. Most folks mount a cage along the rear of the seatpost with hose clamps. Schwinn should have put mounts there. (I finally found a Cannondale cage that, with minor modification, will fit a 1 liter bottle on the frame.) 2)The crankarms creak on the bottom bracket, removing, tightening, even appling a little grease only provides short-term relief.
3)The Avid Single Digit brakes don't center well, and adjusting the screws does very little. But its still possible to get good performance. I have a 300$ Trek with Shimono V-brakes that works twice as well.
I'd recommend this bike to anyone looking for a cross country rig. Its much better than a hardtail, without as much bobbing as the trailing arm bikes. Its dandy right from the shop.

Well, I wanted a S-10 when the '98s came out last year. I ended up with a Moab 1 instead. I really liked the Moab, but I wanted to go FS. My LBS had 2 S-20s in my size and they made me a good deal. I've swapped componets from the Moab to the S-20 and upgraded the Judy T-2 to C3/Type III springs. This bike is evrything that the guys at the LBS said it would be! It rides really smooth over all sufaces and I can still climb like I did on the hardtail. I was really glad to be able to ride hard and not bob up and down like crazy. My only complaint is weight. The bike weighed 29 pounds before swapping the componets and it weighs 28.25 now. It would be less if I didn't have 636 pedals on it. Minus 1 chili for weight!

After reading numerous reviews here and in the mags., I decided to try the Cannondale fs,s and the Schwinns. My local dealer carried both but the Schwinns did not arrive until late July because of the demand for them. But it was just in time for the summer clearance sale! I was allowed plenty of time to test any model I wanted. I narrowed my choice down to the Cannondale 700 and 900, the Schwinn S-20 and a Brodie fs. The Brodie had the best all around ride but the Prestige frame seemed to flex at the cantilevered seat tubes and I could not get used to the overall frme appearance. The Cannondales were more expensive but I am a big C fan. However, the suspension was very spongy and it biopaced. It appeared that the rear suspension was making the already very active front fork even more active. The C'dale front fork is among the best but it is obvious that the sl fork which has 5 adjustment positions is the choice for fs. C'dales with the sl fork are not cheap.
So that left the Schwinn which I purchased. I like the uncomplicated rear suspension and the sweet spot design. While it is not as posh as the other bikes I tried, it is vastly better than a hardtail without a lot more hassle. My only upgrade was to Syncros rims and LX hubs as I was not impressed with the Schwinn brand hub. Yht bike is strong and not hindered by a fragile rear linkage system. I figure that as I get older I will get a fatter seat and higher bars and just polish this bike forever. 5 chiles.

I have to agree with Dean below. The S-20 Bike is an overall good value. However, the bulk of my riding is hill climbs. I really should have put more thought into my decision before purchasing this bike. It takes a lot to get used to climbing and cornering with the S-20. Although it's not a bad climber, it was quite a struggle going up my daily climbs. The downhill makes up for the climbs though. This bike is very smooth compared to a hardtail, and I found myself going downhill faster than normal. I also found myself crashing more often too. My only advice is to be sure that you make an informed decision before choosing this bike. It didn't quite fit my style of riding, and my daily training routine. This Schwinn is a quality bike, but I had to go to my LBS to exchange it for a hardtail bike. (Kudos to them for understanding my situation). Good value for a FS bike though. bought my 1998 '20 october 10th,1997. Pestered the bike-shop guy 'til he special ordered it from colorado. Had the brochures, the cash, just couldn't get my hands on the bike! I love this bike! It's got the 80mm travel judy t2 up front, soaks up every bump the desert throws at it. The rock shox deluxe out back handles the big hits commendably for a bike in this price range. The fire-orange color beats the color on the higher price S, and the component spec rivals the '10. I've since thrown on some new bar-ends(factory ends far too long), some White Bro.'s fork wipers and six-spoke spinergy wheels. I ride fairly technical terrain, and the sweet spot suspension seems to give excellent feedback, plush when seated, rock steady out of the saddle. The bike has been a maintenance dream, the only problem being rear brake gum-out from mud, dust, etc. She climbs like a goat, and let's you descend as fast as the guy on the 35 pound DH bike. Overall, my favorite term for the S-20 is forgiving. If you get a chance to get one of these beauties, do so. I can hardly bear to park mine.

The Specialized was a more plush bike, but the local dealer was inflexible on
price. His loss. Got the S-20 with upgrades to the crank and front derail for $300
less than the FSR Comp and still have the same Judy T-2 fork as the FSR Comp. The T-2
isn't very adjustable, but can be upgraded with an oil damp kit down the road.
The Rock Shox deluxe rear shock was making strange noises at first, which my local

I bought my '96 Schwinn S-20 (came with AD-4 rear shock, rockshocks Quadra-21 fork) back in
1997... It was a good bike overall. But there are few problems that I had in a year of owning the
bike. First of all, the grip shifts sucked! I had to constantly readjust and fine tune these friggin grip
shifts after each and every ride that I could remember. Second of all, the brakes that came with
bike... SUCKED! I had Shimano lever brakes (I don't remember what I had, but it was made by
Shimano)... BOY!!! My hands were f*#ked up!!! I could not stop the damn bike.... I could only
stop it with my bare shoes. I eliminated that problem by adding LX rapid fire shifters and LX V -
brakes.
I also had a HUGE problem with chain suck... until I changed my riding styles... The best way to
prevent chain suck is to keep the chain in a straight line!!!! For example, in a 7 sp rear derailler and
3 sp crank (21 sp), you would have the crankset set at 2nd gear, and the rear derailler set at 3rd,
4th, and 5th gear... go and c for yourself... It works VERY well... especially when the chain gets all
muddy.
Over the course of one year... I think that my bike has given my needs, but I had a problem with
cornering the bike. In addition, it feels like a TANK when cornering in tight turns and the rear
suspension felt like ppppphhhhttttt.... like mushy when there is light rocky terrain, and my front shock
held up well over time. I liked the smooth ride it delivered over rocky terrain, but in light terrain... it
was not what I would like. If you have any questions pertaining to the 1996 Schwinn S-20 model

I run the preload on the rear shock pretty low so it doesn't stiffen up too much when I'm out of the saddle but I've never bottomed out the shock. The rear shock is pretty bad though. The RS Deluxe has absolutely no damping and I am now experiencing the clanking noise that everyone else complains about, but I have not blown the seals. I just ordered a Bomber Z1 BAM and Stratos Helixexpert rear and hopefully these two will be worth the money. I felt like I was wasting money upgrading this bike at first, but now I know I just saved myself alot of money. This frame is not much different than the Homegrown. This bike is well worth upgrading.

I have owned a S-20 for about a year now. I tested many other bikes in this price range ( GT LTS, Specialized Ground Control, Y-Bikes and others) before deciding on the schwinn. I liked the simplicity of the design and the way it preforms on the trail. The transition from my old Cannondale hardtail to my new full-suspension mount was a matter of days, and a new ridding style has emerged since. I am now able to ride sections of trail that I could never cover without dabs before. And my ass is not bruised after a tough day in the woods. All is not perfect (especially at this affordable price) but with a few select upgrades it is only getting better. Cable routing is not the best (downtube) and I am considereing alternative methods, either straight cable housing or maby the Avid Flak Jacket system. I have also encountered a small amount of stiction in the main pivot, and have yet to find a way to get the main pivot dissasembled to clean and relube. If anyone has a solution, please respond. All things considered (Price, Spec., Ride, Design) this bike has been all I wanted it to be. It gets me out on the trail more, and i can ride for longer periods of time with less abuse to my body. But most of all IT'S FUN!!!P.S. If you are looking for the best all around tires, get the Bontrager Jones. What can I say, the S-20 kicks ass. It rides like a dream, and only costs 1100 bones. I originally looked for a S-10, but they were sold out. I'm glad they were because I am upgrading most of the original equipment anyway. I just recieved a King wheelset with X517 rims and Revo spokes. I'm not sure of the actual weight loss, but the bike definately feels lighter (and this is withe the old tires). I'm thinking of getting an Atom Bomb for the front and a Cane Creek for the rear. The bike rides well, but you can always increase performance and shave weight.
One problem though, my rear brake is gummed up. It doesn't retract after I hit the brake. I think I need to get the cable/housing replaced because it got filled with gunk.
Overall, an excellent ride. But, if you have the cash, go for the lighter (and cooler) homegrown.

So I make do with the stock bike and upgrade as mula comes around. Here's my rig's components:Frame: Schwinn S20. Fork: RST Hi-5 with SpeedSprings (5 travel) Shock: RS coupe deluxe (3 1/4 travel) Crank: Shimano LX (four bolt pattern) Bar/Stem: Azonic with 1 1/2 rise/Azonic ORC Shifters: Sachs Power Extreme Pedals: M-636 DX or Scott clipless Seat: fizik nisene Brakes: XT V's Seatpost: Standard Alloy Der(f/b): LX/XT Wheels: Spin wheelset for regular riding, Mavic front and Sun Rhyno back for DH racing Accessories: Avid rollamagig, Tektro chain tensioner, Schwinn cyclometer With all the upgrades and the 2 rise on the top tube due to the fork, it takes a little getting use to. But for someone with little cash to spare time to time, this bike does the job. Now if for say you go all out DH, then a new bike is better. Imight add that schwin warranted this and sent me a new fork. But being a man i felt the need for more power arrr arrr arrr.so i had a RST high-5 triple crown fork installed. then on a trip to my LBS thay happened to be ronning a sale on sun mammoth rims and LX hubs soooo. i daid put em on . new tires well ok , thay where on sale to.I have replaced alot of things on my bike. keep in mindthat i tip the scales at 250 # and son I RIDE HARD!. my best friend eric has put at best 200 miles on his trek y-11(you know the plastic sissy bike that looks like an over-stimulated male dog going up hills) AKA.pogoing. he only tips the scales at 125# soking wet. I have put twice the mileage and son I RIDE HARD. PS. if your shifting gets a little hard replace the cable housing it dont cost that much and makes all the difference in the world.

I ride a S20 and so far it's ok. the front shock breaks alot. The chain keeps getting caught in the sprockes and the cables tend to stick. I am also considering, like matt, converting my bike into a down hill bike. Since weight doesn't matter when gravity is on your side.

I have had my Schwinn for over a month, and the honeymoon shows no sign of ending! this is a great bike. it soaks up the bumps, smooths the trails, and yet climbs better than my old Gt hardtail. the bike looks great, and for the money is better equipped/better spec'd than anything else in its class. Sweet spot gives you all the benefits of full suspension and none of the detriments of the active designs or the other URT's.

I have ridden my S-20 well over 1000 miles so far this summer and fall and think it is an excellent buy. I ride in fast, rocky terrain in Michigan and it handles well. I also rode it in Durango, Colorado for one week and was happy with its performance. However, if you are a very serious rider, like I am, I would recommend spending a few extra dollars and purchasing the S-10. The upgraded components are worth it.

I'm writing a second review about this bike because I feel its necessary. After
riding the S-20 for an entire summer (this was about 1000 miles total) I'm not
as happy with it as I was when I first got it. In favor of the bike it climbs like a bat out of hell. I have found I can claw my way up just about anything. But I have noticed a couple of things I don't like. In my opinion the bike does not handle very well in the corners. I have layed it down on a couple of rides. I think this is a problem with the larger frames only though. A friend of mine rides a 17 inch S-30 and it behaves much better when cornering than my 19 inch S-20. I'm also not happy with a sweet-spot design. The suspension works pretty good when sitting but when charging down a hill behind the saddle the rear wheel behaves much like a hardtail. I.E. hard to control because its bouncing off the ground. I just thought I'd pass on my observations because most people get a new bike and instantly write a good review about it because its there new toy. My toy isn't new anymore and I know what I don't like about it. Its still a decent bike, but this time 3 chillies instead of 5.

The S-20 is an awsome bike. love the simplicity of the sweet spot
suspension, easy and fun to tinker with. The dual personality, soft
when sitting and stiff when standing, is great. I feel that the
frame is great, worthy of up grades. S-20 is a excellent buy for
an all-pourpose FS bike. Negative side: at 30 lbs its a beast.
Schwinn could trim 2 or 3 lbs off next time. over all: 5 stars

I've had my S-20 for 5 months and I still feel good about my choice . It is a good value for the money. It is plush while in the saddle and the Sweet Spot rear suspension allows me to stand to hammer up short, steep hillls. However a downhill rider would probably be better off getting a bike with a full active rear suspension.

I test rode a Schwinn S-30 and am in love. I can't find an S-20 in 21
in the Sacramento area to save my life. If anyone knows where I can
get one, let me know. The suspension turns a cobbled road into a
mattress. I damned near spooged. The 20 is $200 more than the 30
with the same frameset, but the $200 buys ya clipless pedals and one
step up in components. If anyone knows of the whereabouts of a new
S-20 in 21, E-mail me. Thanks!Chili factor FIVE!

I have been riding this bike for about 5 months now, and it has been great. The bike has been able to handle everything that I have thrown at it. After replacing some of the components, such as the stem, wheels, and brakes, the bike is the sweetest thing I have ever ridden. The suspension is nicely setup and feels good on the bumps, although I am going to upgrade to a Judy shock as soon as I get the money. Good job with the sweet spot, it is great. If you can still find one, I would say buy it. It is worth every penny.

Gotta love FS! I've got almost 150 miles on varied terrain and it's been a really good machine so far. Had to replace the rear shock and get the stiffer spring. Besides the strange clunk on really quick bumps this RS is very plush. This bike is definately a XC bike since the gearing winds out at about 40mph and it climbs like a sure-footed donkey (totally geared for climbing). By the way, besides it being a little heavy, this bike climbs extremely well. The Indy shock is a little flexy and could use some damping but also a very plush ride. All in all this bike is a ton of fun for the $$ and LOVES to be airborne. I'll give it 4 of five chillies...

I love this bike. For the price, it beats all the competition. The sweet-spot is great! When properly set up, (1/4 inch preload) the suspension is super plush when seated, and absorbs the big stuff when standing. The only thing I don't like on the bike is the fork. I replaced mine with a Judy. If you can still find one, I highly recommend this bike.

I love this bike!! It is the best spec'd bike in its class. The components are top notch. Components include STX Rapidfire shifters, RS Indy 3 travel fork, RS Deluxe rear shock, Scott Clipless, Avid Vee brakes and adjustable levers and LX rd just to name a few. If the bike is setup right, the suspension will only compress while seated and not during hard pedaling or standing up. For this price, nothing comes close!

The Schwinn S-20 is amazing. I've put almost 100 miles on mine in a variety of
terrains and it holds up like a bike costing twice as much. The STX/LX parts set
is of very good quality and the Avid linear-pull brakes pack more stopping power
than you know what to do with. I'm a bigger (6'2 & 220lbs), but the bike is stiff enough to handle me (don't get me wrong, I'm saving to switch to the heavier springs and elastomers). The simplicity of the URT amazes me, too. It sucks up bumps like nothing, allowing me to cover terrain that would throw me from a hardtail. Complaints? Well, I have some, but they're really mostly nit-picking. I think boosting the price by $100 or so and adding a Judy XC instead of the Indy would have been a pretty good idea. The Indy is adequate, but just that. However, overall I think this bike is more value for the money than any other bikes in its price range. Schwinn is back for the second century, folks.

I own the S10. One level above the S20, same frame and same rear shock. The last reviewers comments about pogo stick and such are not true. This person didn't adjust the suspension properly for his weight. Any FS bike with the to light of springs for its rider will pogo! Follow the manufactures instructions for setup relating to sag and riding style and the Schwinn is brilliant. I had to change my rear spring from the 700lb to the 800lb for my weight (195lbs) and riding style. Likewise I changed the Judy's springs from 140lb to 160lb. The bike works as it should, active when seated, 4x stiffer when standing, no pogo, period. This matches my riding style very well. My guess is the the previous reviewer was the wrong weight for the stock S20 springs. This bike is set up at the factory for 135lb to 160lb riders. The S10 is setup for riders in the 150lb to 175lb range. The Schwinn Sweet-Spot URT works, but like any FS bike it must be setup correctly for the individual riders weight and riding style. Most dealers are not knowledgeable about the bike and or suspension to be of much help. Email me if you need help with S10-20-30 suspension set up...

I had a S.20 and now have a GT STS-1. The .20 is a pogo stick with wheels and it is the one of the worst climbing FS bikes I have have ever ridden !!! The GT is 1,000,000 times better in ALL catagories except rear shifting. I think the sweet spot designs are to simple and not efficient.

I have been riding an S-20 for two months and I think its great. The suspension works oh so well. It rides soft when sitting down but gets rigid when standing. The suspension is also much simpler than some designs. The S-20's sweet spot suspension only has three links compared to some designs 4 or 5 links. The bike also comes with a pretty good parts set for the price ($1150). Its got LX rd, Avid vee-brakes, Rock Shox Indy XC long travel, STX shifters and fd. The frame is the exact same design as the homegrown factory suspension. The only difference is that the S series frames are made overseas. For all of you weight concious individules my frame weights 6.7 lbs. A little heavy but not bad for a $1150 FS bike. Basically if you are thinking of going with full suspension you can't go wrong with this bike.

I recently purchased the S-20 after doing a lot of research on the FS bikes in my price range. I compared comprable models of Klein,
Cannondale, Fischer, Diamondback, Specialized. For the same or less amount of money I found I got a lot more from Schwinn, LX,
clipless, etc. I am a former retro who's been mountain biking for 12 years and decided to make the jump to FS ('cause I'm not as
young as I used to be). The only changes I have made is to swap the Indy XC for a 97 Judy xc, that put another 100 bucks onto the
total price. So far I love the s-20, it is sooo comfortable compared to my old HT. One of the reasons besides value that I picked the
s-20 is because of the sweet spot suspension. It is active when I'm sitting, but almost completely locks out when I stand up to crank
or attack a hill. This is the ideal suspension for me because it absorbs shock when I'm spinning but doesn't rob power when I need it
most. Most of my MTB buddies can not believe I bought a schwinn, cause it's not a cool bike. All I can say is take one for a test
ride and see for yourself. For this price point ($1,100) I give it.....
